Sexual system, temporal variation in sex expression, and herkogamy were evaluated in 210 plant species in the Venezuelan Central Plain (VCP). This analysis was conducted considering the life forms, habitats, flowering time, pollination systems, and dispersal syndromes of the plant species. Hermaphrodite species dominated the community (75.2%; N=158), followed by monoecious taxa (17.1%; N=36), and then dioecious (7.6; N=16). Most species were adichogamous (=homogamous) (75.2%; N=155), followed by protandrous (16.5%; N=34), and protogynous (8.3%; N=17). The frequency of herkogamous species was higher (N=124; 60.2%) than the non-herkogamous (N=82; 39.8%). The three reproductive traits interacted significantly in a way that complements their effectiveness in promoting cross-pollination and avoidance of pollen–stigma interference: hermaphrodite-adichogamous species occurred in similar frequency to herkogamous and non-herkogamous species; monoecious-adichogamous species were mostly herkogamous, and all hermaphrodite, functionally dioecious-adichogamous, species were herkogamous. Sexual system, herkogamy, and dichogamy are associated with habitats in the savanna-forest mosaic of the VCP. The proportion of dioecious species decreased from trees to annual herbs and from forest to disturbed areas. Dichogamous species were most frequent for herbaceous plants, and non-herkogamous species dominated in annual herbs. The frequency of herkogamous species decreased from forest to disturbed areas. Sexual system was significantly associated with pollination system. Most dioecious and monoecious species had generalist pollination. A three-factor log linear analysis indicated that for any combination significantly. Sexual systems and herkogamy were associated with the respective seed dispersal syndrome. Most dioecious and herkogamous species were dispersed by frugivores, while monoecious plants tended to be dispersed by granivores and wind. Flowering time of dioecious species peaked during the dry–rainy transition period, whereas that of monoecious species was greatest during the rainy season. Therefore, specific biotic and abiotic conditions may enforce the occurrence of unisexuality in the community. In a similar way, dichogamous species tend to flower during the rainy season, associated with herbaceous life form and wind pollination. These results are discussed in the context of evolutionary and ecological trends.  相似文献

Orosanga japonica Melichar (Hemiptera: Ricaniidae) is an invasive polyphagous pest in Iran. The planthopper damaged host plants by sap-sucking and egg laying on new twigs. This study aimed to determine the life table parameters of O. japonica on Rubus ulmifolius Schoot (elm leaf blackberry) and Melia azedarach L. (chinaberry) under field conditions in Rudsar (North of Iran) during 2019–2020. The collected life history data were analyzed based on age-stage, two-sex life table theory. The results showed that the incubation period of O. japonica was too long (≈ 270 days) on both host plants. The nymphs emerged from mid-May 2020. The planthopper had five nymphal stages under field conditions. The nymphal duration was 41.39 ± 0.56 days and 38.13 ± 0.62 days on R. ulmifolius and M. azedarach, respectively. The total preadult survival rates were 53.2% and 51.7% on R. ulmifolius and M. azedarach, respectively. Based on the results, a significant shorter total developmental time was observed on M. azedarach. When adults emerged in late July, they laid eggs after 26.05 days and 26.75 days on R. ulmifolius and M. azedarach, respectively. The fecundity on M. azedarach (131.69 egg/female) was significantly higher than that on R. ulmifolius. However, the life table parameters were all not significantly different on the two host plants. The intrinsic rate of increase (r) were 0.0097 ± 0.0005 day−1 and 0.0105 ± 0.0006 day−1 on R. ulmifolius and M. azedarach, respectively. Generally, these findings could be helpful to establish an efficient management strategy for this exotic pest.  相似文献

Demand for beef produced from pasture-based diets is rising as it is perceived to be healthier, animal friendly and good for the environment. Animals reared on a solely grass forage diet, however, have a lower growth rate than cereal-fed animals and consequently are slaughtered at an older age. This study focused on the former by conducting life cycle assessments of beef production systems offering only fresh or conserved grass, and comparing them to a conventional pasture-based beef production system offering concentrate feeding during housing. The four suckler weanling-to-beef production systems simulated were: (i) Steers produced to slaughter entirely on a grass forage diet at 20 months (GO-20); (ii) Steers produced to slaughter entirely on a grass forage diet at 24 months (GO-24); (iii) Steers produced to slaughter on a grass forage diet with concentrate supplementation during housing (GC-24), and (iv) Steers produced to slaughter entirely on a grass forage diet at 28 months (GO-28). Two breed types were evaluated: early-maturing and late-maturing (LM). The environmental impacts assessed were global warming potential (GWP), non-renewable energy (NRE), acidification potential (AP), eutrophication potential (marine (MEP) and freshwater) were expressed per animal, per kg live weight gain (LWG), kg carcass weight gain, and kg meat weight gain (MWG). The GO-20 production system had the lowest environmental impact across all categories and functional units for both breeds. Extending age at slaughter increased environmental impact across all categories per animal. The LWG response of EM steers to concentrate feed supplementation in GC-24 was greater than the increase in total environmental impact resulting in GC-24 having a lower environmental impact across categories per kg product than GO-24. Concentrate feed supplementation had a similar effect on LM steers with the exception of NRE and AP. The increase in daily LWG in the third grazing season in comparison to the second grazing and housing resulted in GO-28 having lower GWP, NRE, AP, and MEP per kg product than GO-24. Early-maturing steers had lower environmental impact than LM when expressed per kg LWG. However the opposite occurred when impacts were expressed per kg MWG, despite LM steers producing the least LWG. The LM steers compensated for poor LWG performance by having superior carcass traits, which caused the breed to have the lowest environmental impact per kg MWG. The results reaffirms the importance of functional unit and suggests reducing the environmental impact of LWG does not always translate into improvements in the environmental performance of meat.  相似文献

Absract Three pedicellate-declinate-flowered species of Trillium (Liliaceae), T. vaseyi and T. flexipes , were studied for their life history characteristics, e.g., stage class structures of natural populations and reproductive features, including energy allocation to reproductive activities. The populations structures of all three species showed similar depletion structures characterized by a conspicuous decrease of individuals in the small juvenile stages, as was also observed in pedicellate-erect-flowered Trillium species However, with respect to reproductive characteristics, these three declinate-flowered species showed different features from erect-flowered species, although they belong to the same pedicellate-flowered group. That is, these declinate-flowered Trillium species exhibited low seed setting rates of 30% in T. catesbaei , 45% in T. vaseyi and 34% in T. flexipes , suggesting that they possess different mating systems from erect-flowered species which showed high seed setting rates of 50–90%.  相似文献

The long-term population dynamics of the swallowtail butterfly, Papilio xuthus, were studied by means of life table analysis in a deforested area, where the host tree, Zanthoxylum ailanthoides, was growing. The number of eggs laid on host trees in the deforested area decreases as secondary succession progresses. When the trees were classified into three groups, i. e. tall, medium and short, according to their height relative to the surrounding vegetation, less eggs were laid on tall than on short host trees. Life tables for the natural populations in each generation were developed on the basis of mean values for 6 years. Eggs and larvae in early stages were attacked chiefly by small- and middle-sized predators, such as ants, spiders, bugs and orthopterids, while later stage larvae were attacked chiefly by birds or Polistes wasps. An inchneumonid wasp was the most important mortality factor in the pupal stage. Key-factor analysis was tested on the life table data of each immature stage. The late larval stage was a key stage, and most mortality factors were considered to operate independently. The test for density dependency did not show any tendencies. The analysis of variance in two-way classifications was carried out for the difference of survival rate among the tree groups. It was suggested that tall host trees were unsuitable for P. xuthus. The construction of life tables for artificially inoculated populations on large host trees showed that high physiological death rate were characteristic of such trees in comparison with natural populations on smaller trees. The characteristics of the population dynamics of P. xuthus in the deforested area are compared among some kinds of the habitat, and the interrelationship between P. xuthus and its host plant are discussed.  相似文献

对山西灵空山自然保护区的油松(Pinus tabulaeformis)种群进行了调查,利用生存分析理论及谱分析理论,分析了油松种群径级结构和静态生命表,绘制了存活曲线,同时分析了种群数量的周期性。主要结果如下:(1)油松种群幼苗幼树个体数较多,中径级的个体数较稳定,而高径级由于种间竞争及环境因子的影响,个体数明显下降。(2)油松种群的存活曲线呈现Deevey-Ⅱ型。动态表现为前期增长,中期稳定,后期衰退。(3)油松种群波动存在小周期,但变化不大,说明油松种群发展较为稳定。  相似文献

Pyruvate carboxylase (PC) is a biotin-dependent enzyme that catalyzes the MgATP- and bicarbonate-dependent carboxylation of pyruvate to oxaloacetate, an important anaplerotic reaction in central metabolism. The carboxyltransferase (CT) domain of PC catalyzes the transfer of a carboxyl group from carboxybiotin to the accepting substrate, pyruvate. It has been hypothesized that the reactive enolpyruvate intermediate is stabilized through a bidentate interaction with the metal ion in the CT domain active site. Whereas bidentate ligands are commonly observed in enzymes catalyzing reactions proceeding through an enolpyruvate intermediate, no bidentate interaction has yet been observed in the CT domain of PC. Here, we report three X-ray crystal structures of the Rhizobium etli PC CT domain with the bound inhibitors oxalate, 3-hydroxypyruvate, and 3-bromopyruvate. Oxalate, a stereoelectronic mimic of the enolpyruvate intermediate, does not interact directly with the metal ion. Instead, oxalate is buried in a pocket formed by several positively charged amino acid residues and the metal ion. Furthermore, both 3-hydroxypyruvate and 3-bromopyruvate, analogs of the reaction product oxaloacetate, bind in an identical manner to oxalate suggesting that the substrate maintains its orientation in the active site throughout catalysis. Together, these structures indicate that the substrates, products and intermediates in the PC-catalyzed reaction are not oriented in the active site as previously assumed. The absence of a bidentate interaction with the active site metal appears to be a unique mechanistic feature among the small group of biotin-dependent enzymes that act on α-keto acid substrates.  相似文献

Solid waste life cycle modeling has predominantly focused on developed countries, but there are significant opportunities to assist developing and transition economies to minimize the environmental impact of solid waste management (SWM). Serbia is representative of a transition country and most (92%) of its waste is landfilled. As a Candidate European Union (EU) country, Serbia is expected to implement SWM strategies that meet EU directives. The Solid Waste Life‐Cycle Optimization Framework (SWOLF) was used to evaluate scenarios that meet EU goals by 2030. Scenarios included combinations of landfills, anaerobic digestion, composting, material recovery facilities (MRFs), waste‐to‐energy (WTE) combustion, and the use of refuse‐derived fuel in cement kilns. Each scenario was evaluated with and without separate collection of recyclables. Modeled impacts included cost, climate change, cumulative fossil energy demand, acidification, eutrophication, photochemical oxidation, total eco‐toxicity, and total human toxicity. Trade‐offs among the scenarios were evaluated because no scenario performed best in every category. In general, SWM strategies that incorporated processes that recover energy and recyclable materials performed well across categories, whereas scenarios that did not include energy recovery performed poorly. Emissions offsets attributable to energy recovery and reduced energy requirements associated with remanufacturing of recovered recyclables had the strongest influence on the results. The scenarios rankings were robust under parametric sensitivity analysis, except when the marginal electricity fuel source changed from coal to natural gas. Model results showed that the use of existing infrastructure, energy recovery, and efficient recovery of recyclables from mixed waste can reduce environmental emissions at relatively low cost.  相似文献

The variation of plant water use efficiency (WUE) with water availability has two interacting components: a plastic response, evident when individuals of the same genotype are compared (e.g. wet versus dry years), and an interspecific response, evident when different species living in habitats with different water availability are compared. We analysed the WUE of 25 Patagonian species that belong to four life forms (grasses, shrubs, annual herbs and perennial herbs) in relation to the climatic conditions of 2 years and the mean historic water availability experienced by each species. To estimate water availability, we calculated the effective soil water potential (EWP) of each species, based on available information about soil water dynamics, phenology and root system structure. To estimate WUE, we used isotopic discrimination of leaf C (Δ13C) and mean annual water vapour difference between leaves and atmosphere (Δe) measured in situ. For the plastic response, for every species and life form, WUE increased from the dry to the wet year. We hypothesize that photosynthesis was less nutrient limited in the wet than in the dry year, facilitating higher net photosynthesis rates per unit of stomatal conductance in the wet year. For the interspecific response, WUE was lower in species native to drier habitats than in species native to wetter habitats. This response was mostly accounted for by a decrease in Δe with EWP. Annual herbs, which avoid drought in time (they have the earliest growth cycle), and shrubs, which avoid drought in space (they have the deepest roots), showed the highest EWP and WUE. We conclude that the conventional wisdom which states that the highest WUE occurs within a species during the driest years, and among species in the driest habitats, does not always hold true, and that co-existing life forms drastically differ in water availability and water economy.  相似文献
