ObjectivesThe objective of the proposed study is to exploit the technology of high-density surface electromyography (HD-sEMG), in order to evaluate the muscle activation in young and elderly subjects during a daily life gesture, namely, Sit To Stand (STS), using wireless connected ambulatory equipment (TMSi©) and Blind Source Separation (BSS) approach with Canonical Correlation Analysis (CCA).Materials and methodsSixteen subjects participated (50% females) divided into two categories (‘H1’: young (30.62 yrs ±5.92, 23.95 kg/m2 ±3.08), versus ‘H2’: old (61.87 yrs ±7.98, 23.4 kg/m2 ±3.38)), in the recording of HD-sEMG signals, using 32-electrodes square grids (4×8), during Sit To Stand (STS) motion, three times at spontaneous speed. The studied muscle is the Rectus Femoris (RF) muscle. The recorded HD-sEMG signals were analyzed with CCA approach to extract correlation coefficient sets according to two age categories (young versus old), in order to evaluate its discriminating power with ageing. Statistical tests (t-test) were used to evaluate the discrimination for these two categories.ResultsThe calculation of CCA correlation coefficients showed a significant difference between young and old category concerning the mean CCA correlation coefficient (P<0.001***) and also the standard deviation of the CCA correlation coefficients (P<0.0001****).ConclusionThe obtained results are promising and indicate a clear difference between the obtained source variability using CCA method between the young and the old tested subjects during daily life motion. Furthermore, these estimated sources seem to be impacted by both anatomical and functional modifications with ageing. 相似文献

In this paper, EEG signals of 20 schizophrenic patients and 20 age-matched control participants are analyzed with the objective of determining the more informative channels and finally distinguishing the two groups. For each case, 22 channels of EEG were recorded. A two-stage feature selection algorithm is designed, such that, the more informative channels are first selected to enhance the discriminative information. Two methods, bidirectional search and plus-L minus-R (LRS) techniques are employed to select these informative channels. The interesting point is that most of selected channels are located in the temporal lobes (containing the limbic system) that confirm the neuro-phychological differences in these areas between the schizophrenic and normal participants. After channel selection, genetic algorithm (GA) is employed to select the best features from the selected channels. In this case, in addition to elimination of the less informative channels, the redundant and less discriminant features are also eliminated. A computationally fast algorithm with excellent classification results is obtained. Implementation of this efficient approach involves several features including autoregressive (AR) model parameters, band power, fractal dimension and wavelet energy. To test the performance of the final subset of features, classifiers including linear discriminant analysis (LDA) and support vector machine (SVM) are employed to classify the reduced feature set of the two groups. Using the bidirectional search for channel selection, a classification accuracy of 84.62% and 99.38% is obtained for LDA and SVM, respectively. Using the LRS technique for channel selection, a classification accuracy of 88.23% and 99.54% is also obtained for LDA and SVM, respectively. Finally, the results are compared and contrasted with two well-known methods namely, the single-stage feature selection (evolutionary feature selection) and principal component analysis (PCA)-based feature selection. Fetal heart rate (FHR) variations reflect the level of oxygenation and blood pressure of the fetus. Electronic Fetal Monitoring (EFM), the continuous monitoring of the FHR, was introduced into clinical practice in the late 1960s and since then it has been considered as an indispensable tool for fetal surveillance. However, EFM evaluation and its merit is still an open field of controversy, mainly because it is not consistently reproducible and effective. In this work, we present a novel method based on grammatical evolution to discriminate acidemic from normal fetuses, utilizing features extracted from the FHR signal during the minutes immediately preceding delivery. The proposed method identifies linear and nonlinear correlations among the originally extracted features and creates/constructs a set of new ones, which, in turn, feed a nonlinear classifier. The classifier, which also uses a hybrid method for training, along with the constructed features was tested using a set of real data achieving an overall performance of 90% (specificity = sensitivity = 90%). 相似文献

Substances such as acetylcholine and glutamate act as both neurotransmitters and neuromodulators. As neuromodulators, they change neural information processing by regulating synaptic transmitter release, altering baseline membrane potential and spiking activity, and modifying long-term synaptic plasticity. Slice physiology research has demonstrated that many neuromodulators differentially modulate afferent, incoming information compared to intrinsic and recurrent processing in cortical structures such as piriform cortex, neocortex, and the hippocampus. The enhancement of afferent (external) pathways versus the suppression at recurrent (internal) pathways could cause cortical dynamics to switch between a predominant influence of external stimulation to a predominant influence of internal recall. Modulation of afferent versus intrinsic processing could contribute to the role of neuromodulators in regulating attention, learning, and memory effects in behavior. 相似文献

The Botswana Combination Prevention Project was a cluster-randomized HIV prevention trial whose follow-up period coincided with Botswana's national adoption of a universal test and treat strategy for HIV management. Of interest is whether, and to what extent, this change in policy modified the preventative effects of the study intervention. To address such questions, we adopt a stratified proportional hazards model for clustered interval-censored data with time-dependent covariates and develop a composite expectation maximization algorithm that facilitates estimation of model parameters without placing parametric assumptions on either the baseline hazard functions or the within-cluster dependence structure. We show that the resulting estimators for the regression parameters are consistent and asymptotically normal. We also propose and provide theoretical justification for the use of the profile composite likelihood function to construct a robust sandwich estimator for the variance. We characterize the finite-sample performance and robustness of these estimators through extensive simulation studies. Finally, we conclude by applying this stratified proportional hazards model to a re-analysis of the Botswana Combination Prevention Project, with the national adoption of a universal test and treat strategy now modeled as a time-dependent covariate. 相似文献

Research into how and what families learn in science museums and other informal science learning settings suggests that parent-child interactions play an important role in shaping children’s learning experiences. Our exploratory case study set out to discover and analyse learning happening within family groups during a visit to a traditional museum natural history gallery. Research methods were influenced by a growing body of literature that looks for learning in family visitor talk. Conversations of 18 families were recorded as they explored a gallery after being introduced to six learning games which fostered a ‘climate of inquiry’ and which were designed to spark family dialogue. Our findings indicate that families adopt a range of interactional approaches for building meaning together in a museum gallery. These approaches fell along a spectrum that varied according to the level of co-investigation and co-operation between group members. We suggest that family learning could be supported in informal learning contexts through simple, low-cost learning strategies that encourage dialogue and co-investigatory behaviours. 相似文献

The aim of this study was to investigate and present a new mapping method to describe muscle pain sensitivity based on the assessment of pressure pain threshold (PPT) over the trapezius muscle. PPT data were recorded from 36 points in 20 healthy males using a standardised grid. Points were clustered using the K-means algorithm with a fixed initialisation procedure. The total number of clusters was determined on the basis of (1) R 2 evaluation of the clustering outcome compared against a desired 95% reduction in variance criterion and (2) the number of empty clusters. A minimum of three clusters were found which fulfilled the criteria. The proposed method enables the identification of a relation between the muscle subdivisions and pressure pain sensitivity within the trapezius. Further, the cluster analysis will enable the study of differences in pain sensitivity distributions between patients and controls and quantify the effect of intervention (physical or pharmacological treatments). 相似文献

Retroactive interference between cues of the same outcome (i.e., IbC) occurs when the behavioral expression of an association between a cue and an outcome (e.g., A → O1) is reduced due to the later acquisition of an association between a different cue and the same outcome (e.g., B → O1). Though this interference effect has been traditionally explained within an associative framework, there is recent evidence showing that IbC effect may be better understood in terms of the operation of higher order causal reasoning processes. The results from Experiments 1 and 2 showed an IbC effect in a learning task within a game scenario suggesting non-causal relationships between events. Varying‐coefficient models have become a common tool to determine whether and how the association between an exposure and an outcome changes over a continuous measure. These models are complicated when the exposure itself is time‐varying and subjected to measurement error. For example, it is well known that longitudinal physical fitness has an impact on cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality. It is not known, however, how the effect of longitudinal physical fitness on CVD mortality varies with age. In this paper, we propose a varying‐coefficient generalized odds rate model that allows flexible estimation of age‐modified effects of longitudinal physical fitness on CVD mortality. In our model, the longitudinal physical fitness is measured with error and modeled using a mixed‐effects model, and its associated age‐varying coefficient function is represented by cubic B‐splines. An expectation‐maximization algorithm is developed to estimate the parameters in the joint models of longitudinal physical fitness and CVD mortality. A modified pseudoadaptive Gaussian‐Hermite quadrature method is adopted to compute the integrals with respect to random effects involved in the E‐step. The performance of the proposed method is evaluated through extensive simulation studies and is further illustrated with an application to cohort data from the Aerobic Center Longitudinal Study. 相似文献
