Two ant species, Odontomachus rixosus and Pheidole annexus, were studied in the tropical rainforests of Sabah, Malaysia, North Borneo, to analyze the impact of habitat fragmentation
on the genetic diversity and population structure of ant populations using RAPD-fingerprinting. Ants were sampled in a contiguous
(43,800 ha) and three patches of primary rainforests of varying size (4294, 146 and 20 ha) that were fragmented about 40 years
ago. We found a decrease in genetic variability for both species in the fragmented populations compared to the contiguous.
Genetic distances between populations resembled the geographical arrangement of populations and can be explained by an effect
of isolation by distance. A high degree in population subdivision suggests a lack of meta-population dynamics due to a shortage
of gene flow between populations, possibly the result of the high degree of habitat isolation by oil palm plantations. Although
the results of this study are limited due to low replication this is the first data on genetic patterns of insect populations
in fragmented rainforests and should be seen as starting point for future research. The value of small to medium sized protection
areas for conservation needs to be carefully evaluated in the context of this study, as even relatively large areas (4294 ha)
may not prevent the critical loss of genetic variability and guarantee long-term survival of organisms. 相似文献

We studied leaf anatomy, using clearings, resin sections, and scanning electron microscopy, from mostly herbarium specimens of 123 species ofDombeya and 11 species ofNesogordonia (Sterculiaceae). Species were placed in seven idioblast categories, ranging from those without any to single and bicelled epidermal forms to multicelled nodules and single mesophyll idioblasts. Idioblast contents are possibly mucilaginous, but were not identified. In these two genera the range of foliar idioblast morphology surpasses that known previously for the entire family. Leaves are dorsiventral with mostly abaxial anomocytic stomata and typical palisade and spongy layers; paraveinal mesophyll is lacking. Miniature glandular (clavates, capitates) and nonglandular (mostly stellate) trichomes occur. Prismatic crystals predominate; epidermal prismatics and mesophyll druses are rare. 相似文献

The architectural, compositional and functional characteristics of the cell walls of the leaves of the moss Rhacocarpus purpurascens (Brid.) Par. have been analysed by scanning and transmission electron microscopy, wall-extraction methods, nuclear magnetic
resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, and water-retention experiments. Four-layered cell walls with a peculiar architecture which,
so far, appears to be unique among plants were apparent. The architecture of the walls was not affected by sequential wall-extraction
procedures. Subsequent analysis of the residual pre-extracted walls by classical spectro-photometrical methods revealed that
the walls are composed of mainly lignin, hemicellulose and cellulose in a ratio of about 9:8:5, determining their integrity.
This was supported by NMR spectroscopy. The resonance spectrum showed various characteristics typical of lignin; however,
some specific peaks associated with lignin were missing. The walls exhibited no particular properties for external water conduction
but seem to be adapted to rapid absorption of fog, dew, or rain.

In extracts from the primary leaf blade of sugar beet (Beta vulgaris L.) we separated a chloroplastic isoform (GS 2) of glutamine synthetase (GS, EC 6.3.1.2) and one or two (depending on leaf age) cytosolic isoforms (GS 1a and GS 1b). The latter were prominent in the early (GS 1a) and late stages of leaf ontogeny (GS 1a and GS 1b), whereas during leaf maturation GS 2 was the predominantly active GS isoform. The GS 1 isoforms were active exclusively in the octameric state although tetrameric GS 1 protein was detected immunologically. Their activity stayed at a relatively constant level during leaf ontogeny; an increase was observed only in the senescent leaf. The activity of GS 2, however, changed drastically during primary leaf ontogeny and was modulated by changes in the oligomeric state of the active enzyme. In the early and late stages of leaf ontogeny when GS 2 activity was low (lower than that of the GS 1 isoforms), GS 2 was active only in the octameric state. In the maturing leaf, when GS 2 activity had reached its maximum level (much higher than that of the GS 1 isoforms), 80 of total GS 2 activity was due the activity of the tetrameric form of the enzyme and 20 was due to octameric GS 2. Tetrameric GS 2 was a hetero-tetramer and thus not the unspecific dissociation product of homo-octameric GS 2. In addition, GS 2 activity was modulated by an activation/inactivation of the tetrameric GS 2 protein. Due to an activation of the GS 2 tetramer, the activity of tetrameric GS 2 increased during leaf maturation from zero level 23-fold compared with that of GS 1a and 18-fold compared with that of GS 1b. Possible activators of tetrameric GS 2 are thiol-reactive substances. During leaf senescence, GS 2 activity decreased to zero; this decrease was due to an inactivation of the tetrameric GS 2 protein probably caused by oxidation.Abbreviations FLL

Analysis of the multi-stem clump structure ofLitsea japonica Juss. growing in a coastal dwarf forest
The multi-stem clump structure of a coastal dwarf forest dominated byLitsea japonica Juss. was investigated in order to clarify the sprouting characteristics and self-maintenance of clumps by stem alternation.
The size and age distribution of multi-stem clumps were analyzed using cumulative relative frequency curves.L. japonica had a large number of stems and an even height distribution or young age-biased distribution of stems within a clump. These
results indicated the sequential flushing of sprouts at high frequency. Height distribution within a clump ofL. japonica was relatively even compared to other species. This clump structure suggested the stable self-maintenance of individuals
in all ranges of size and age without disturbances. It originated specific sprouting characteristics as a response to the
severe stress of salty wind.Ardisia sieboldii Miq. had few stems within a clump. Although the stem height distribution of large individuals tended to be even, most clumps
had a large size-biased distribution of stem height which indicated simultaneous sprouting. From this structure, sprouts of

林冠截留降雨过程是森林流域水分循环的重要组成部分,以往的研究多为1次或多次降雨量与截留量的关系,很少考虑雨强和树木特征.文中利用林冠截留降雨半经验半理论模型,以雨强和叶面积指数为模型输入,林冠湿润程度为参数,结合Penman-Monteith公式,有效地模拟了长白山阔叶红松林次降雨的截留过程和2004年5~9月的林冠截留总量.结果表明,研究期间的林冠截留总量为39.96 mm,占降雨总量的10.2%,与实测资料吻合.根据模拟结果,探讨了不同时间尺度上截留量与降雨量之间的关系,随着时间尺度的增大,截留量与降雨量的相关关系趋于明显. 相似文献

The dynamics of stomatal resistance and osmotic adjustment in response to plant water deficits and stage of physiological development was studied in the leaves of spring wheat ( Triticum aestivum L., GWO 1809). Plants were germinated and grown in pots in a growth chamber at the Duke University Phytotron to four physiological stages of development (4th leaf, 7th leaf, anthesis, and soft dough), during which time stomatal resistance, total water potential and osmotic potential were measured on the last fully developed leaf of water stressed and non-stressed plants. Pressure potential was obtained by difference. Stomatal closure of the abaxial and adaxial surfaces were independent of each other, each having a different critical total water potential. The total water potential required to close the stomata on the last fully developed leaf were different at different stages of physiological development, decreasing as the plants grew older. The development of osmoregulation in wheat allows the closure of stomata during the vegetative stage at a high total water potential, but insures that stomata remain open from anthesis through the ear filling period to a lower total water potential. 相似文献

Ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (EC 1.1.39) (RuBPCase) was quantified using polyacrylamide-gel electrophoresis in whole 9-d-old first leaves of 14 genotypes of Triticum, and cellular RuBPCase levels calculated. Diploids, tetraploids and hexaploids were analysed and it was confirmed that the RuBPCase level per cell is closely related to ploidy in wheat. Inter-genotypic variation in RuBPCase levels per cell and per leaf were surveyed.
