Photosynthetic rates and related anatomical characteristics of leaves developed at three levels of irradiance (1200, 300 and 80 umol · m–2 · s–1) were determined in the C4-like species Flaveria brownii A.M. Powell, the C3–C4-intermediate species F. linearis Lag., and the F1 hybrid between them (F. brownii × F. linearis). In the C3–C4 and F1 plants, increases in photosynthetic capacity per unit leaf area were strongly correlated with changes in mesophyll area per unit leaf area. The C4-like plant F. brownii, however, showed a much lower correlation between photosynthetic capacity and mesophyll area per unit leaf area. Plants of F. brownii developed at high irradiance showed photosynthetic rates per unit of mesophyll cell area 50% higher than those plants developed at medium irradiance. These results along with an increase in water-use efficiency are consistent with an increase of C4 photosynthesis in high-irradiance-grown F. brownii plants, whereas in the other two genotypes such plasticity seems to be absent. Photosynthetic discrimination against 13C in the three genotypes was less at high than at low irradiance, with the greatest change occurring in F. brownii. Discrimination against 13C expressed as 13C was linearly correlated (r 2 = 0.81; P<0.001) with the ratio of bundle-sheath volume to mesophyll cell area when all samples from the three genotypes were combined. This tissue ratio increased for F. brownii and the F1 hybrid as growth irradiance increased, indicating a greater tendency towards Kranz anatomy. 柞蚕林是以养蚕为目的的萌生栎林,林冠经剪伐而形成不同的冠型结构。本文对3种冠型的叶面积系数,冠层内叶量分布及消光系数等冠层结构特点进行了测定。结果表明,不同冠形的冠层结构特点明显影响林内光照环境及叶生物量。现有的3种冠型中,“阶梯”型结构有较高的叶面积系数和较合理的叶量分布,因而具有较高的叶生物量。“中干”型叶生物量与无干型虽无明显差异,但“中干”型消光系数较低,林内空间较大,林内光照环境比“无干”型结构优越。  相似文献

Summary The workerless, inquiline ant,Doronomyrmex kutteri has isolated populations with a haploid chromosome number ofn=23 both in the Alps (Swiss and South Tyrolean Alps) and in Sweden, and a population withn=25 in southern Germany. Crossbreeding of sexuals from all populations proved successful. Backcrosses of F1-females with males from the parental populations produced F2-females, and hybrid males withn=23, 24, or 25 chromosomes. The chromosome polymorphism is not due to B-chromosomes. Probably then=25 karyotype originated from then=23 karyotype by two Robertsonian fissions (2 ¯M 4 ¯A), since then=25 karyotype was found in only one of the populations. Diploid males occurred frequently in colonies from four out of five sites investigated.  相似文献

Summary The plant species composition of the chaff piles of three species of harvester ant (Messor spp.) and the contribution of the chaff to the organic pool were studied from August 1985 to July 1987. There were distinct differences in the plant species composition of the chaff of the three species. We attribute this to the different diets of the three species, which reflect the relative sizes of their individuals and their foraging strategies. The amount of chaff accumulated varies greatly between the three species (Messor rugossus: 127–196 g · ha–1 · y–1;Messor ebeninus: 2823–4437 g · ha–1 · y–1;Messor arenarius: 2165–2535 g · ha–1 · y–1), although the number of nests per hectare is virtually the same. We found that the amount of chaff is related to the rate of activity and the size of the individuals of each of the three ant species. The total chaff accumulated during the study period was 19.2 kg · ha–1, which is an important contribution to the organic matter in the soil in the Negev desert ecosystem.  相似文献

Two regression analyses were used to study how the absence/presence of fungi in south Swedish beech forest is related to topsoil and litter chemistry. Since many soil variables are correlated, each species was related to models of (1) the rotated principal components of the soil properties (as suggested by a previous study) and (2) the underlying primary variables. The study indicated that the two analyses are complementary and provide a mean for further interpretation of the results, since they consider different aspects of sporophore occurrence in relation to soil properties. Size variation in newly-emerged adults was examined in two different local populations of an herbivorous lady beetle, Henosepilachna niponica, for 1976–80. Mean adult size of both sexes changed rather synchronously in the two populations over 5 years. Body size of adult beetles apparently decreased with increasing leaf damage of the plants on which they developed. Adult beetles which emerged late in the season, associated with increasing food deterioration, were smaller than those which emerged early. Ecological consequences of adult size variation is discussed in terms of oviposition site selection.  相似文献

Two methods are described for estimating position-time relationships (pathlines) in steady, one-dimensional growth zones. Pathlines can be used to provide a time base for spatial data in developmental studies. The methods apply within extension-only zones (zones of growth without cell division) and require data for cell-number densities, or cumulative cell numbers, or mean cell lengths, and for the overall elongation rate of an organ. The first method (continuous-pathline method) can be used to estimate spatial velocity fields within extension-only zones and pathlines can then be obtained by integration of the velocity data. This method is based on the continuity equation for cell-number densities. Pathlines can also be estimated using a simple graphical version of this method. The second method (pathline-coordinate method) is based on the approximation that a cell of mean length remains of mean length as it moves through the extension-only zone, and can be used to estimate the coordinates of wall pathlines at discrete intervals. The methods are illustrated using published data from studies of apical growth in Zea mays L. roots and of intercalary growth in Triticum aestivum L. leaves.  相似文献

Samples of 01/02, A1, E2 and Bh horizons collected from a coastal pine forest were assayed for the potential capacity to adsorb and to form organic sulfur from added sulfate. The subsequent mobilization (mineralization) of organic S was also assayed to determine potential capacities of the samples for organic S accumulation. Organic and inorganic forms of S were quantified, as were total carbon and nitrogen levels. Relationships between these parameters and the above S processing capacities for each sample were examined, and fluctuations were statistically analyzed. Of the organic S present, sulfonate-S (non-Raney Ni-reducible S) was found to be the major component irrespective of horizon. Adsorbed and soluble S were found to be low, suggesting that loss by leaching may be an important fate of incoming sulfate at this site. Results from this study were compared with those obtained for two additional sites, which have been examined in detail and documented previously to be S accumulating. Soils from the pine forest site adsorbed substantially less sulfate than those from the other two sites. A comparison has been made of the relative effectiveness of light quality and quantity and gibberellic acid (GA3) treatment on the elongation growth of the coleoptile and the first foliage leaf in durum wheat (Triticum durum Desf. cvs. Cappelli and Creso). The cultivar Creso is a shortstrawed variety carrying the Gai 1 gene on chromosome 4A, which influences both plant height and insensitivity to applied gibberellins. The main conclusions are as follows: 1) coleoptile elongation growth appears to be modulated via the fluencerate-dependent action of a blue-light receptor and via a low energy response of phytochrome; 2) the inhibition of first-foliage-leaf growth depends on the operation of a single blue-light-responsive photoreceptor; 3) high energy blue light produces the same inhibitory effect on the two wheat cultivars, whereas at relatively low fluences of white and blue light, the cultivar Creso is more sensitive; 4) the insensitivity to applied GA3 exerted by the gene Gai 1 in Creso is independent of light; 5) in Cappelli, the action of light on coleoptiles appears to be independent of the applied GA3, whereas the hormone is able to change the pattern of growth inhibition of the first-foliage-leaf.Abbreviations BL blue light - FR far-red light - GA gibberellin - GA3 gibberellic acid - R red light - WL white light  相似文献
