The influence of leaf epicuticular waxes of nine woody species from cerrado (a savanna ecosystem of Brazil) on the foraging behavior of the leaf-cutting antAtta sexdens rubropilosa Forel, 1908 (Formicidae, Attini) was investigated. Some waxes showed neither inhibitory nor attractive effect over a series of tests, while a second group caused a delayed rejection. Waxes of two species were shown to be strongly deterrent to the ants. Since different waxes caused different responses, it is concluded that their chemical composition, rather than hydrophobicity or mechanical constraints, accounts for the observed effects. Plant species with leaves rejected by the ants did not necessarily have repellent waxes. On the other hand, no species with acceptable leaves yielded waxes with deterrent effects.  相似文献

Spatial and temporal changes of zoobenthos composition and density were assessed in a woodland pond, near Geneva (Switzerland), by monthly sampling (during 15 months), on the three main substrates: a submerged macrophyte (Chara sp.), an emergent macrophyte (Typha latifolia stems) and allochthonous detritus (oak leaves).Many taxa showed preferences for one or two of the substrates, as expressed by differences in densities, but few taxa presented an exclusivity for one substrate. Zoobenthos densities (per m2 of pond bottom) were largely dominated on all substrates and seasons by Chironomidae and Oligochaeta. Other dense macroinvertebrates included Ostracoda (on Chara and Typha stems), Gastropoda (on Typha stems), Ephemeroptera (all substrates), and Ceratopogonidae (on Typha stems).The magnitude of temporal differences in densities was expressed by the ratio of maximal to minimal monthly densities and reached values between 2.8 to 11.8. On all substrates the highest monthly densities were observed in summer or beginning of autumn. The temporal changes in densities were strongly influenced by the life cycles of the invertebrates: presence of numerous young individuals in summer (for example Cypridopsis vidua, Cloeon dipterum, Caenis horaria, Ferrissia wautieri), and emergence (for example Chironomidae in April). Fluctuations in densities, especially on Chara and leaves, were also attributed to modification of substrate condition (surface availability, stage in the decomposition or senescence process). Temporal fluctuations of densities were compared with other lentic water bodies: highest densities showed a common trend, occurring between end of spring and beginning of autumn.  相似文献

Patterns of both above- and belowground biomass and production were evaluated using published information from 200 individual data-sets. Data sets were comprised of the following types of information: organic matter storage in living and dead biomass (e.g. surface organic horizons and soil organic matter accumulations), above- and belowground net primary production (NPP) and biomass, litter transfers, climatic data (i.e. precipitation and temperature), and nutrient storage (N, P, Ca, K) in above- and belowground biomass, soil organic matter and litter transfers. Forests were grouped by climate, foliage life-span, species and soil order. Several climatic and nutrient variables were regressed against fine root biomass or net primary production to determine what variables were most useful in predicting their dynamics. There were no significant or consistent patterns for above- and belowground biomass accumulation or NPP change across the different climatic forest types and by soil order. Similarly, there were no consistent patterns of soil organic matter (SOM) accumulation by climatic forest type but SOM varied significantly by soil order—the chemistry of the soil was more important in determining the amount of organic matter accumulation than climate. Soil orders which were high in aluminum, iron, and clay (e.g. Ultisols, Oxisols) had high total living and dead organic matter accumulations-especially in the cold temperate zone and in the tropics. Climatic variables and nutrient storage pools (i.e. in the forest floor) successfully predicted fine root NPP but not fine root biomass which was better predicted by nutrients in litterfall. The importance of grouping information by species based on their adaptive strategies for water and nutrient-use is suggested by the data. Some species groups did not appear to be sensitive to large changes in either climatic or nutrient variables while for others these variables explained a large proportion of the variation in fine root biomass and/or NPP.  相似文献

In order to characterize the sociogenetic structure of colonies in the carpenter ants Camponotus herculeanus and C. ligniperda, we have developed microsatellite markers. The three loci studied were either fixed for different alleles in the two species or showed different patterns of polymorphisms. Genotyping of workers and males showed that the broods of C. ligniperda include several matrilines, a rare phenomenon in the genus. Five alleles from a locus polymorphic in both species were sequenced from the respective PCR-products. A part of the length variation appeared to be due to changes outside the repeat sequence, and some PCR products of an equal length had a different number of dinucleotide repeats.  相似文献

The leaf trichomes of the evergreen and semi-deciduous species of the genus Quercus living in the Iberian Peninsula were studied by means of SEM and LM. The SEM has been particularly useful because of the high quality of the illustrations and the possibility of recognizing the structures under I,M or the stereomicroscope afterwards. The studied species were: Quercus coccifera, Q ilex , Q rotundifolia, Q suber, Q canariensis, Q faginea, Q brateroi and Q lusitanica . All species show some exclusive particularities that permit their identification using these characters. The abaxial surface of the leaf always has more trichomes than the adaxial and hence provides more characters for identification. Quercus alpestris Boiss. shows the same features in the leaf trichomes as Q faginea Lam. A key for identification using these characters is provided.  相似文献

This study evaluated one semi-direct and three indirect methods for estimating leaf area index (LAI) by comparing these estimates with direct estimates derived from litter collection. The semi-direct method uses a thin metallic needle to count a number of contacts across fresh litter layers. One indirect method is based on the penetration of diffuse global radiation measured over the course of a day. The second indirect method uses the LAI-2000 plant canopy analyser (PCA) which measures diffuse light penetration from five different sky sectors simultaneously. The third indirect method uses the Demon portable light sensor to measure the penetration of direct beam sunlight at different zenith angles over the course of half a day. The Poisson model of gap frequency was applied to estimate plant area index (PAI) from observed transmittances using the second and third methods. Litter collection from 11 temperate decidous forests gave values of LAI ranging from 1.7 to 7.5. Estimates based on the needle method showed a significant linear relationship with LAI values obtained from litter collections but were systematically lower (by 6–37%). PAI estimates using all three indirect techniques (fixed light sensor system, LAI-2000 and Demon) showed a strong linear relationship with LAI derived from litter collection. Differences, averaged over all forest stands, between PAI estimates from each of the three indirect methods and LAI from litter collections were below 2%. If we consider that LAI=PAI–WAI (wood area index) then, all three indirect methods underestimated LAI by an additional factor close to the value of WAI. One reason could be a local clumping of architectural canopy components: in particular, the spatial dispositions of branchlets and leaves are not independent, leading to a non-random relationship between the distributions of these two canopy components.  相似文献

Leaf orientations and light environments were recorded for 40 juvenile Pseudopanax crassifolius trees growing in New Zealand in a partially shaded, secondary forest environment. Efficiencies of interception of diffuse and direct light by the observed leaf arrangments were calculated relative to those of three hypothetical leaf arrangements. Canopy gaps above the study plants were unevenly distributed with respect to azimuth and elevation above the horizon. Our results indicate that photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) received from the sides is more important than that received from directly above. In 33 of the plants leaf orientation was found to be significantly clustered towards one azimuth. The mean azimuth and the mean angle of declination were different for each plant. Leaves were steeply declined, and oriented towards the largest canopy gap at each site. Steep leaf angles reduced interception of direct and diffuse PAR when compared to interception by plant with a hypothetical horizontal leaf arrangement. When compared to a hypothetical arrangement with steep leaf declination and a uniform azimuth distribution, the observed leaf arrangement increased the efficiency of interception of diffuse PAR, but had a variable effect on the interception of direct PAR. Results indicate that the developing leaves of juvenile P. crassifolius orient towards the strongest sources of diffuse light, regardless of their value as a source of direct light. By maximising diffuse light interception while reducing direct light interception, leaf orientation may be a partial determinant of the types of habitats exploited by this species. This study emphasises the importance of considering diffuse light interception for plants growing in partially shaded environments.  相似文献

A dwarf mutant, M117, was isolated following sodium-azide mutagenesis of barley (Hordeum vulgare L. Himalaya). Treatment of the mutant with gibberellic acid (GA3) restored growth to levels of the tall parent, -Amylase production was examined in germinated grains of the dwarf mutant and in Himalaya plants treated with gibberellin (GA) biosynthesis inhibitors. The mutant showed reduced -amylase activity relative to the parent when grains were germinated on water, but activities were equivalent to the parent following germination on GA3 solution. Germination of normal or mutant grains in the presence of GA biosynthesis inhibitors led to reduced -amylase activity levels, but normal levels were restored if GA3 was included in the inhibitor solution. These data are consistent with a model in which -amylase production in the germinated grain is regulated by the supply of active GAs. Treatment of M117 with GA3 increased the length, fresh weight, dry weight, volume, cell number, and protein content of the first leaf. Proteins being synthesized in the first leaf were labelled with [35S]methionine and fractionated by two-dimensional electrophoresis. No reproducible qualitative or quantitative differences in protein profiles were detected in response to GA3 treatment. In contrast, first leaves from seedlings exposed to dehydration stress had profiles clearly distinguishable from those of control seedlings. Stem sections from dwarf plants maintained on 10 M GA3 in the presence of sucrose elongated significantly more than controls without GA3, but two-dimensional analysis of the [35S]methionine-labelled radioactive polypeptides again revealed no GA3-induced differences. Plants of the partial amphiploid Inia 66/Thinopyrum distichum (2n = 70)//Inia 66 (2n = 56) were used as male parents in crosses with the monosomic series in the common wheat cultivar Inia 66. The genome and homoeologous group of the monosomic used in the cross affected the distribution of chromosome number of the progeny plants in the F2 and F4. Meiosis in the pollen mother cells of the B1F7 partial amphiploids was not stable, and not different from that of the B1F1 in which univalents and multivalents were observed. Disomic addition lines were selected on the basis of morphology and meiotic stability in the F2, F4 and F5. Eleven of the fourteen possible wheat-Th. distichum disomic addition lines were identified using chromosome C-band pattern, as well as size and arm ratio, as genetic markers. Addition of T. distichum chromosome J dll produced a phenotype indicating homoeology with wheat group-2 chromosomes. Clear indications of homoeology based on morphological characteristics were not obtained in any of the other addition lines, probably due to the mixed homoeology of the Th. distichum chromosomes relative to wheat. The addition lines were all susceptible to leaf rust, unlike the germplasm-line Indis which carries a leaf rust resistance gene on a translocation segment derived from Th. distichum. Instability of meiotic pairing was observed in all addition lines. The stability, or not, of progeny chromosome counts did not reflect the level of chromosome pairing instability in the parental plants. SDS-PAGE for gliadin-type seed proteins revealed two addition lines which expressed seed storage proteins uncommon to Inia 66 but typical of Th. distichum.  相似文献

The morphology of leaf venation has been studied repeatedly and various systems have been proposed for the classification of the observed leaf venation patterns. Almost nothing is known, however, about the functional properties of the various venation types. Using a computer modelling approach we analysed the water transport properties of typical craspedodromous and brochidodromous venation patterns. The water transport through the leaf and the veins was modelled as a fluid flow through a porous medium and the mathematical model was solved with the Finite Element Method. The simulations illustrate that the leaf margin represents a critical region in terms of water supply. The results provide a plausible functional explanation for three well known phenomena: 1) the correlation between craspedodromous venation and the formation of leaf teeth; 2) the fact that craspedodromous venation is more common in temperate than in tropical regions and 3) the fact that xeromorphic leaves tend to have more closed venation.  相似文献
