The third petiolar bud ofHypolepis punctata appears on the basiscopic lateral side of the petiole above the fairly developed first petiolar bud. This investigation clarified
the fact that the third bud is formed neither by the activity of the meristem of the first bud nor by the meristem directly
detached from the shoot apical meristem, but is initiated in the cells involved in the abaxial basal part of the elevated
portion of the leaf primordium. Thus the third bud is of phyllogenous origin. This investigation further revealed that the
cells to initiate the third bud are originally located in the abaxial side of the leaf apical cell complex like the cells
to initiate the first bud, but are not incorporated into the meristem of the first.
After the first, second and third petiolar buds have been initiated, they are carried up into fairly high regions on the petiolar
base by the intercalary growth which occurs in the leaf base below the insertion level of the first and the second buds. 相似文献

Summary In the North American harvester antEphebomyrmex imberbiculus, in addition to dealate queens, wingless female reproductives occur that have greatly reduced ocelli and thoracic sutures (intermorphic queens). Both queen types are equivalent in function, and do not differ in ovarian morphology. Colonies may contain several inseminated and egg-laying intermorphic queens. Stimulation of leaf expansion by an exogenous cytokinin was studied in isolated leaf discs of sweet pepper with emphasis on the assimilate utilization of the tissue. Leaf discs were floated on solutions containing sucrose and plant growth regulators. Benzyladenine (BA) promoted the area expansion rate of the leaf discs. Sucrose at 100 mM resulted in increased area expansion rate compared with 10 mM sucrose. However, the increased sucrose concentration had no influence on the effect of BA. Over a period of 24 h, treatment with BA did not result in any change of sucrose uptake nor of the partitioning of assimilated carbon in the leaf discs. Neither did BA treatment affect the activity of acid invertase (EC 3.2.1.26) or pyrophosphate-dependent phosphofructokinase (EC 2.7.1.90) in the leaf discs. We conclude that the observed promotion of leaf area expansion by exogenous BA is not mediated through the uptake of sucrose or the carbohydrate metabolism of the leaf tissue.Abbreviations BA

The dark-relaxation kinetics of variable fluorescence, Fv, in intact green leaves of Pisum stativum L. and Dolichos lablab L. were analyzed using modulated fluorometers. Fast (t1/2 = 1 s) and slow (t1/2 = 7–8 s) phases in fv dark-decay kinetics were observed; the rate and the relative contribution of each phase in total relaxation depended upon the fluence rate of the actinic light and the point in the induction curve at which the actinic light was switched off. The rate of the slow phase was accelerated markedly by illumination with far-red light; the slow phase was abolished by methyl viologen. The halftime of the fast phase of Fv dark decay decreased from 250 ms in dark-adapted leaves to 12–15 ms upon adaptation to red light which is absorbed by PSII. The analysis of the effect of far-red light, which is absorbed mainly by PSI, on Fv dark decay indicates that the slow phase develops when a fraction of QA
– (the primary stable electron acceptor of PSII) cannot transfer electrons to PSI because of limitation on the availability of P700+ (the primary electron donor of PSI). After prolonged illumination of dark-adapted leaves in red (PSII-absorbed) light, a transient. Fv rise appears which is prevented by far-red (PSI-absorbed) light. This transient fv rise reflects the accumulation of QA
– in the dark. The observation of this transient Fv rise even in the presence of the uncoupler carbonylcyanide m-chlorophenyl hydrazone (CCCP) indicates that a mechanism other than ATP-driven back-transfer of electrons to QA may be responsible for the phenomenon. It is suggested that the fast phase in Fv dark-decay kinetics represents the reoxidation of QA
– by the electron-transport chain to PSI, whereas the slow phase is likely to be related to the interaction of QA

Plant species were selected on the basis of abundant or no symplasmic continuity between sieveelement-companion-cell (SE-CC) complexes and adjacent cells in the minor veins. Symplasmic continuity and discontinuity are denoted, respectively, as symplasmic and apoplasmic minor-vein configurations. Discs of predarkened leaves from which the lower epidermis had been removed, were exposed to 14CO2. After 2 h of subsequent incubation, phloem loading in control discs and discs treated with p-chloromercuribenzenesulfonic acid (PCMBS) was recorded by autoradiography. Phloem loading was strongly suppressed by PCMBS in minor veins with symplasmically isolated SE-CC complexes (Centaurea, Impatiens, Ligularia, Pelargonium, Pisum, Symphytum). No significant inhibition of phloem loading by PCMBS was observed in minor veins containing sieve elements with abundant symplasmic connections (Epilobium, Fuchsia, Hydrangea, Oenothera, Origanum, Stachys). Phloem loading in minor veins with both types of SE-CC complex (Acanthus) had apoplasmic features. The results provide strong evidence for coincidence between the mode of phloem loading and the minor-vein configuration. The widespread occurrence of a symplasmic mode of phloem loading is postulated.Abbreviations PCMBS

The present paper elucidates the pattern of leaf and non-leaf fall and quantifies of the total annual input of litter in a dry tropical forest of India. In addition, concentration of selected nutrients in various litter species and their annual return to the forest floor are examined. Total annual input of litter measured in litter traps ranged between 488.0–671.0 g m-2 of which 65–72% was leaf litter fall and 28–35% wood litter fall. 73–81% leaves fall during the winter season. Herbaceous litter fall ranged between 80.0–110.0 g m-2 yr-1. The annual nutrient return through litter fall amounted (kg ha-1): 51.6–69.6 N, 3.1–4.3 P, 31.0–40.0 Ca, 14.0–19.0 K and 3.7–5.0 Na, of which 71–77% and 23–29% were contributed by leaf and wood litter fall, respectively for different nutrients. Input of nutrients through herbaceous litter was: 13.0–16.6 for N, 1.0–1.4 for P, 4.0–5.0 for Ca, 7.9–10.5 for K and 0.8–1.0 kg ha-1 yr-1 for Na. 相似文献

Several aspects of plant-water relationships and canopy behaviour have been studied over several years in two experimental areas of Quercus ilex L. forests in the northeastern Iberian Peninsula. Water requirements, water status limits necessary for a positive carbon budget and the functional canopy behaviour in the face of abiotic stress were evaluated, in order to determine which factors influence the geographical range of these forests.The results showed that holm oak has a conservative water use, a low cuticular transpiration, a high capacity for osmotic adjustement and xerophytic characteristics in leaf morphology and canopy arrangement. More than 440 mm of annual rainfall are required for these forests to persist. Summer drought and winter cold are thus important abiotic factors limiting the distribution of Quercus ilex. Using a combination of mathematical modeling and field studies we showed that in dense stands of growing herbaceous plants the vertical pattern of leaf nitrogen distribution resembles the pattern of mean light attenuation in the stand and hence tends to maximize total daily photosynthetic carbon gain of the whole stand. Flowering represents a strong sink of nitrogen away from the photosynthetic apparatus and in herbs like Solidago altissima it induces leaf shedding. We studied both the effect of nitrogen reallocation and leaf shedding on the whole canopy photosynthesis and changes in leaf nitrogen distributions in stands moving from the growing to the flowering stage. Despite a decrease in leaf area index and total nitrogen available for photosynthesis in the flowering stand, the leaf nitrogen distribution here also leads to an almost maximum canopy photosynthesis. In both the growing and the flowering stands the leaf area index was higher than calculated optimum values. It is pointed out that this should not necessarily be interpreted as non-adaptive. 相似文献
