We examined relative effects of traits of leaf quality of ten willow species (Salix: Salicaceae) on growth rates of five species of insect herbivores found in interior Alaska (a willow sawfly, Nematus calais; the tiger swallowtail butterfly, Papilio canadensis; and three species of chrysomelid beetles, Gonioctena occidentalis, Calligrapha verrucosa, and Chrysomela falsa). Leaf traits examined were water content, toughness, total nitrogen contnet, pubescence, and presence or absence of phenolic glycosides. Of ten Salix species, four species contain phenolic glycosides in their leaves. We examined relative effects of water content, toughness, and nitrogen content of the Salix leaves on larval growth rates at three different levels, i.e., on a single host species, between different host species, and between herbivore species. The within-host analyses showed that effects of water content, toughness and/or nitrogen content on herbivore growth rates were generally significant in early-season herbivores but not in late-season herbivores. For each herbivore species, differences in growth rates between hosts were not explained by differences in water content, toughness, or nitrogen content. The between-herbivore analysis showed that the interspecific difference in larval growth rates were related to difference in water and nitrogen content of the hosts. Pubescence of Salix leaves had little effects on herbivore growth rates. Presence of phenolic glycosides had a positive effects on growth rates of a specialist, N. calais, but no effect on the other specialist, Ch. falsa. Presence of phenolic glycosides had, in general, negative effects on growth rates of nonspecialists, G. occidentalis, C. verrucosa, and P. canadensis.  相似文献

Summary Cuttings of hybrid poplar (Populus × euramericana var. Dorskamp) were exposed to ozone (80 g/m3 from 2100 hours to 0700 hours, 180 g/m3 from 0700 hours to 2100 hours) for 3 months. Ozone reduced the starch content in leaves and stem bark, whereas starch granules accumulated in bundle sheath cells along small leaf veins. At the same time, sucrose and inositol content increased in the leaves. Mesophyll cells in the vicinity of the stomata were injured first, and droplet-like material appeared on their walls. In the sieve plates of fumigated trees, the pores showed a higher degree of narrowing than those of the control treatment. Cell collapse in the leaves was accompanied by water loss and an increase in air space. In the stems, the ozone treatment led to a reduced radial width, particularly in the xylem tissue. These results are discussed in relation to reduced or inhibited phloem loading and ozone-induced drought stress. The plants injured by ozone showed quite distinct patterns of metabolite responses as well as enzyme activities (PEP- and RubP-carboxylase) in the leaves from the top to the bottom. There were also remarkable differences in the reaction of sucrose and inositol between leaves and stem bark. Future research should therefore increasingly follow a whole-plant approach for a better understanding of complex plant reactions.  相似文献

Phototropism of youngAdiantum fern leaves is induced by red light as well as blue light. The red light response is mediated by phytochrome. This is the first evidence of phytochrome action in diploid fern tissue. The blue light response is mainly mediated not by phytochrome, but probably by a blue light-absorbing pigment as in the case of almost all plants and fungi. The red light-induced phototropism becomes detectable within 2 hr after the onset of unilateral light. The highest bending rate is about 10 degrees/hr, which occurs between 3–5 hr after the induction of the tropic response. The bending region is about 6–8 mm from the highest point of the coiled crozier where the growth rate becomes slow.  相似文献

Plant height, light-saturated rates of photosynthesis (A max) and foliar nitrogen concentration (N 1) were measured forBartsia trixago under field conditions in Mallorca. All three variables were postively correlated, and were also positively related to the abundance of nitrogen-fixing legumes in the associated vegetation (putative host species).A max forB. trixago ranged from 7.7 to 18.8 mol m-2 s-1; similar rates were measured for a second hemiparasiteParentucellia viscosa, and both species were within the range of rates measured for six putative hosts (10.6–19.2 mol m-2 s-1). Fertilization of unattachedB. trixago plants with inorganic nitrogen (ammonium nitrate) elicited neither the growth nor the photosynthetic responses observed in plants considered to be parasitic on legumes and in receipt of an enriched organic nitrogen supply. Both hemiparasites had high diurnal leaf conductances (g s) (469–2291 mmol m-2 s-1) and were at the upper end of the range of those measured in putative hosts (409–879 mmol m-2 s-1). In contrast with the latter, high nocturnal rates ofg s were also recorded for the two hemiparasites (517–1862 mmol m-2 s-1). There was no clear relationship between eitherA max orN 1 and eitherg s, transpiration (E) or water use efficiency (A max/E) inB. trixago plants. The economics of water loss appear to be independent of both the supply of nitrogen from the host and autotrophic carbon fixation.  相似文献

Studies of heat and mass exchange between leaves and their local environment are central to our understanding of plant-atmosphere interactions. The transfer across aerodynamic leaf boundary layers is generally described by non-dimensional expressions which reflect largely empirical adaptations of engineering models derived for flat plates. This paper reviews studies on leaves, and leaf models with varying degrees of abstraction, in free and forced convection. It discusses implecations of finding for leaf morphology as it affects – and is affected by – the local microclimate. Predictions of transfer from many leaves in plant communities are complicated by physical and physiological feedback mechanisms between leaves and their environment. Some common approaches, and the current challenge of integrating leaf-atmosphere interactions into models of global relevance, are also briefly addressed.  相似文献

A suite of functionally-related characters and demography of three species of Neotropical shadeadapted understory shrubs (Psychotria, Rubiaceae) were studied in the field over five years. Plants were growing in large-scale irrigated and control treatments in gaps and shade in old-growth moist forest at Barro Colorado Island, Panama. Irrigation demonstrated that dry-season drought limited stomatal conductance, light saturated photosynthesis, and leaf longevity in all three species. Drought increased mortality of P. furcata. In contrast, irrigation did not affect measures of photosynthetic capacity determined with an oxygen electrode or from photosynthesis-CO2 response curves in the field. Drought stress limited field photosynthesis and leaf and plant survivorship without affecting photosynthetic capacity during late dry season. Leaves grown in high light in naturally occurring treefall gaps had higher photosynthetic capacity, dark respiration and mass per unit area than leaves grown in the shaded understory. P. furcata had the lowest acclimation to high light for all of these characters, and plant mortality was greater in gaps than in shaded understory for this species. The higher photosynthetic capacity of gap-grown leaves was also apparent when photosynthetic capacity was calculated on a leaf mass basis. Acclimation to high light involved repackaging (higher mass per unit leaf area) as well as higher photosynthetic capacity per unit leaf mass in these species. The three species showed two distinct syndromes of functionally-related adaptations to low light. P. limonensis and P. marginata had high leaf longevity (3 years), high plant survivorship, low leaf nitrogen content, and high leaf mass per unit area. In contrast, P. furcata had low leaf survivorship (1 year), high plant mortality (77–96% in 39 months), low leaf mass per unit area, high leaf nitrogen content, and the highest leaf area to total plant mass; the lowest levels of shelf shading, dark respiration and light compensation; and the highest stem diameter growth rates. This suite of characters may permit higher whole-plant carbon gain and high leaf and population turnover in P. furcata. Growth in deep shade can be accomplished through alternative character syndromes, and leaf longevity may not be correlated with photosynthetic capacity in shade adapted plants.  相似文献

 不同放牧强度下高寒灌丛植物在生长发育、生理生态,物质生产和群落结构等方面主要有以下变化:1.在高寒灌丛草场,禾草类、莎草类和灌丛类植物的叶面积指数和平均生长速率随着放牧强度的减轻而增大;随着放牧强度的增加而减小。植株平均高度,植被盖度水平也与放牧强度呈负相关(p<0.01)。2.各项生长分析参数中:叶面积比率(LAR)、叶面积干重比(SLA)和叶干重比(LWR)与放牧强度之间存在负相关。叶面积指数(LAI)与地上生物量呈正相关(p<0.5),地上部现存在量与放牧强度呈负相关(p<0.01)。3.不同放牧强度条件下,高寒灌丛中的禾草类、莎草类、灌丛类和杂类草植物的种类组成和数量变化明显。其中禾草类和莎草类、灌丛类植物的生物量和种类组成比例在重度放牧下减少,在轻度放牧下增大。反之,重度放牧下杂类草的组成和数量明显增加,而轻度放牧下其比例降低。  相似文献

Abstract. To document the relationship between a plant's position in the canopy and its leaf nutrient content, leaf nitrogen and phosphorus were determined for 30 species growing in mature evergreen lowland rain forest at La Selva Biological Station, Costa Rica. Species that grow either in the understory, midstory, or the canopy were selected. Species were further separated into three life forms: self-supporting monocots, self-supporting dicots, and climbers. Mass-based nutrient concentrations were expected to decrease with stature, as has been reported in studies of other forests. In fact, mass-based nitrogen and phosphorus did not vary significantly among the three adult-stature classes, although area-based values differed greatly: canopy plants averaged 60 % more nitrogen and 90 % more phosphorus per unit leaf area than understory plants. Differences in leaf characteristics were evident among the three life forms. Most notably, area-based phosphorus and leaf specific mass were lowest in climbers, intermediate in self-supporting dicots, and highest in self-supporting monocots. These results support the characterization of climbers as investing in inexpensive structures, perhaps in order to gain competitive advantage in light capture by allocating resources to maximize elongation rates.  相似文献
