Orphan Basin is a deep-water basin on the continental margin off Newfoundland, which throughout the late Quaternary received proglacial sediment from local ice that crossed the continental shelf. Sediment from more distant sources was transported southward in the Labrador Current as proglacial plumes and in icebergs. Five sedimentary facies related to glacial processes are distinguished in cores recovered from Orphan Basin: hemipelagic sediment, nepheloid-layer deposits (layered mud), beds rich in ice-rafted detritus (IRD), sand and mud turbidites, and glaciogenic debris-flow deposits. IRD-rich beds correspond to periods of intensified iceberg calving, and layered mud, turbidites, and glaciogenic debris-flow deposits with glacial meltwater discharge.

In the Late Wisconsinan, eight periods of meltwater discharge and iceberg calving from the Newfoundland ice sheet are interpreted from the sediment facies in Orphan Basin. These discharges coincide with the terminations of the colder periods of the D–O cycles recorded in Greenland ice cores. The oldest minor meltwater event (27.5–28.5 cal ka) corresponds to the first Late Wisconsinan ice advance across the Grand Banks and NE Newfoundland Shelf. The following three meltwater discharges (23–23.5, 23.8–24.5, and 25–27 cal ka) deposited sand turbidites and glaciogenic debris-flow deposits seaward of Trinity Trough, which was occupied by an ice stream at this time, and mud turbidites in the southern part of the basin derived from a mid-shelf ice margin on the Grand Banks. Four periods of meltwater discharge occurred during the deglaciation and are centered at 15, 18.5, 19.75, and 20.75 cal ka. The youngest is correlated to Heinrich event 1. In the literature, the 18.5 and 20.75 cal ka events have been recorded in multiple glacial settings in the North Atlantic, and therefore, are interpreted as large-scale events of meltwater discharge and iceberg calving, but in Orphan Basin the 19.75 cal ka event is also of similar scale.  相似文献

The simple linear polymer polyglycerol (PGL) was found to apparently bind and inhibit the ice nucleating activity of proteins from the ice nucleating bacterium Pseudomonas syringae. PGL of molecular mass 750 Da was added to a solution consisting of 1 ppm freeze-dried P. syringae 31A in water. Differential ice nucleator spectra were determined by measuring the distribution of freezing temperatures in a population of 98 drops of 1 microL volume. The mean freezing temperature was lowered from -6.8 degrees C (control) to -8.0,-9.4,-12.5, and -13.4 degrees C for 0.001, 0.01, 0.1, and 1% w/w PGL concentrations, respectively (SE < 0.2 degrees C). PGL was found to be an ineffective inhibitor of seven defined organic ice nucleating agents, whereas the general ice nucleation inhibitor polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) was found to be effective against five of the seven. The activity of PGL therefore seems to be specific against bacterial ice nucleating protein. PGL alone was an ineffective inhibitor of ice nucleation in small volumes of environmental or laboratory water samples, suggesting that the numerical majority of ice nucleating contaminants in nature may be of nonbacterial origin. However, PGL was more effective than PVA at suppressing initial ice nucleation events in large volumes, suggesting a ubiquitous sparse background of bacterial ice nucleating proteins with high nucleation efficiency. The combination of PGL and PVA was particularly effective for reducing ice formation in solutions used for cryopreservation by vitrification.  相似文献

From an ontogenetic point of view, invertebrate eggs are generally the most freezing intolerant stage of a species. Development state, water content and acclimation may affect their supercooling ability. In this study, we measured fresh mass, water content and temperature of crystallisation (T(c)) of eggs of the edible land snail Cantareus aspersus, depending on its form ("aspersa"vs. "maxima"), incubation temperature (20, 12 and 7 degrees C) and physiological age (as part of the complete development). We also tested their tolerance to freezing. Despite a high number of individual observations (n=759) and significant differences of fresh mass and water content between both subspecies, no effect of origin, incubation temperature or development state has been found in this study. T(c) remained constant whatever the condition, with an overall mean of -5.40+/-0.24 degrees C (mean+/-SD). We suggest that fresh mass is important, a high water content and a constantly wet surface confer to land snail eggs a poor ability to supercool. Moreover, the presence of ice nucleating agents at the egg surface (microorganisms present in the soil, calcium carbonate crystals of the egg shell) might induce freezing. Thus, considering the present results, to delay hatching by cryopreservation of eggs does not seem possible.  相似文献

An examination of post-Younger Dryas (YD) pollen stratigraphies in the Gulf of St. Lawrence and St. Lawrence estuary region reveals features in the pollen records that represent breaks in the normal vegetation succession, widespread vegetation suppression, and a delay in migration of plant taxa between 9.7 and 7.2 14C ka (11.2 and 8.0 cal ka). The domination of Alnus crispa at sites bordering the St. Lawrence estuary-Gulf region in Gaspésie and northern New Brunswick within this timeframe represents a diversion from the typical vegetation progression from Picea and/or Populus or Picea/Betula to Pinus and/or Betula, and signifies a shift to a cooler, drier climate. Coinciding with the A. crispa expansion and domination in that region was the contraction of Picea populations in other areas. In southwestern New Brunswick and eastern and southeastern Nova Scotia, Picea was replaced by the first appearance of tree birch, B. papyrifera; whereas in western and southwestern Newfoundland, Picea gave way to a resurgence of shrub birch, Betula glandulosa. The Picea contraction and immediate resurgence of Betula represents cooling, and is reliably dated at 9720 ± 110 14C BP (10,800-11,240 cal BP) in southwest Newfoundland. This first post-YD episode of widespread cooling is correlated with the North Atlantic Preboreal Oscillation (PBO) centered around 9650 14C BP (10,900-11,180 cal BP) in the adjacent Great Lakes region. Sites exposed to winds from the Gulf of St. Lawrence in eastern New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, and northern Nova Scotia show a lingering persistence of Picea and delay in arrival of Pinus to 8.0 and 7.7 14C ka (9.0 and 8.4 cal ka), yet Pinus was dominant as early as 9.4 14C ka (10.6 cal ka) in southwestern New Brunswick. At the same time, tundra vegetation persisted at high elevations in western and southwestern Newfoundland only to be replaced by upslope migration of shrub-birch heath by 8 14C ka. Prolonged broad-scale cooling to 8 14C ka and to as late as 7.7 14C ka extended up to 200 km inland in areas exposed to the St. Lawrence estuary and Gulf region and was in response to strong, cold, dry anticyclonic winds coming off the retreating Laurentide Ice Sheet in combination with enhanced freshwater runoff through the Gulf of St. Lawrence.The end of the period of prolonged cooling and onset of regional warming coincided with the diversion of western Canada runoff and Agassiz-Ojibway drainage to Hudson Bay and reduced effect or final break-up of the Laurentide Ice Sheet. Several sites document a subsequent cold shift, that interrupted regional warming at 7650 to 7200 14C BP (8400 to 8000 cal BP), and which is variously represented by the suppression of Pinus and resurgence of Picea, sometimes with A. crispa (Québec-Maritime region), or by an abrupt decrease of Picea and resurgence of Betula (western Newfoundland). This second post-YD cool interval is equated with the 8200 cal BP cold event registered in the Greenland ice isotopic record.  相似文献

We have identified and tested a new colloidal tracer for use in hazardous waste site characterization and other environmental applications. The tracer is primarily composed of the dead ice nucleating active (INA) bacterium Pseudomonas syringae. Assay conditions are simple and based on the observation of the freezing behavior of 10 μl solution volumes. Under specific assay conditions (−5 to −7°C) these drops freeze only if the tracer is present. The results are available within 3 min of sample collection thus, providing near real-time results. The tracer detection limits are in the range of ng/l, it is stable over a pH range of 2–11, and maintains its high activity in the presence of a variety of contaminant compounds. In a simple column experiment this colloid tracer eluted just prior to NaCl with little or no tailing.  相似文献

Researchers attempting to study the presence, abundance, size, and behavior of fish species in northern and arctic climates during winter face many challenges, including the presence of thick ice cover, snow cover, and, sometimes, extremely low temperatures. This paper describes and compares the use of video and acoustic cameras for determining fish presence and behavior in lakes, rivers, and streams with ice cover. Methods are provided for determining fish density and size, identifying species, and measuring swimming speed and successful applications of previous surveys of fish under the ice are described. These include drilling ice holes, selecting batteries and generators, deploying pan and tilt cameras, and using paired colored lasers to determine fish size and habitat associations. We also discuss use of infrared and white light to enhance image-capturing capabilities, deployment of digital recording systems and time-lapse techniques, and the use of imaging software. Data are presented from initial surveys with video and acoustic cameras in the Sagavanirktok River Delta, Alaska, during late winter 2004. These surveys represent the first known successful application of a dual-frequency identification sonar (DIDSONTM) acoustic camera under the ice that achieved fish detection and sizing at camera ranges up to 16 m. Feasibility tests of video and acoustic cameras for determining fish size and density at various turbidity levels are also presented. Comparisons are made of the different techniques in terms of suitability for achieving various fisheries research objectives. This information is intended to assist researchers in choosing the equipment that best meets their study needs.  相似文献

Overwintering plants produce antifreeze proteins (AFPs) having the ability to adsorb onto the surface of ice crystals and modify their growth. Recently, several AFPs have been isolated and characterized and five full-length AFP cDNAs have been cloned and characterized in higher plants. The derived amino acid sequences have shown low homology for identical residues. Theoretical and experimental models for structure of Lolium perenne AFP have been proposed. In addition, it was found that the hormone ethylene is involved in regulating antifreeze activity in response to cold. In this review, it is seen that the physiological and biochemical roles of AFPs may be important to protect the plant tissues from mechanical stress caused by ice formation.  相似文献

Three mutant polypeptides of the type I 37-residue winter flounder ‘antifreeze' protein have been synthesized. All four threonine residues in the native peptide were been mutated to serine, valine and glycine respectively and two additional salt bridges were incorporated into the sequences in order to improve aqueous solubility. The peptides were analyzed by nanoliter osmometry, the ‘ice hemisphere' test, the ‘crystal habit' test, measurement of ice growth hysteresis and CD spectroscopy. While the valine and serine mutants retain the α-helical structure, only the valine mutant retains ‘antifreeze' activity similar to that of the native protein. These data show that the threonine hydroxyl groups do not play a crucial role in the accumulation of the native ‘antifreeze' protein at the ice/water interface and the inhibition of ice growth below the equilibrium melting temperature.  相似文献
