AFLP markers were used to investigate the population genetic differentiation among populations of Sebastes schlegelii from China and Japan. A total of 405 bands were amplified for 180 individuals from 9 populations by 3 pairs of selective primers. S. schlegelii exhibited high Nei's gene diversity with an average value of 0.29 for all populations. No significant genealogical branches or clusters corresponding to sampling localities were detected by UPGMA tree. The results of AMOVA analysis and pairwise FST values showed no genetic divergence among different geographic populations. The result of STRUCTURE demonstrated all populations of S. schlegelii examined in the study shared one single gene pool.  相似文献

The Botocudo Indians were hunter‐gatherer groups that occupied the East‐Central regions of Brazil decimated during the colonial period in the country. During the 19th century, craniometric studies suggested that the Botocudo resembled more the Paleoamerican population of Lagoa Santa than typical Native Americans groups. These results suggest that the Botocudo Indians might represent a population that retained the biological characteristics of early groups of the continent, remaining largely isolated from groups that gave origin to the modern Native South American variation. Moreover, recently, some of the Botocudo remains have been shown to have mitochondrial and autosomal DNA lineages currently found in Polynesian populations. Here, we explore the morphological affinities of Botocudo skulls within a worldwide context. Distinct multivariate analyses based on 32 craniometric variables show that 1) the two individuals with Polynesian DNA sequences have morphological characteristics that fall within the Polynesian and Botocudo variation, making their assignation as Native American specimens problematic, and 2) there are high morphological affinities between Botocudo, Early Americans, and the Polynesian series of Easter Island, which support the early observations that the Botocudo can be seen as retaining the Paleoamerican morphology, particularly when the neurocranium is considered. Although these results do not elucidate the origin of the Polynesian DNA lineages among the Botocudo, they support the hypothesis that the Botocudo represent a case of late survival of ancient Paleoamerican populations, retaining the morphological characteristics of ancestral Late Pleistocene populations from Asia. Apart from the possible, but unproven presence of some Irish hermits, the Norse colonizers of the Faroe Islands arrived in an unsettled landscape around A.D. 800. The archipelago was essentially unwooded and rich in bird and marine life. The area of land suitable for settlement and farming was relatively meagre and concentrated in coastal areas; inland areas were suitable for shielings (summer pasture) and subsequently more extensive grazing (outfield) activities. Reconstruction of the settlement distribution has not been a well-developed aspect of Faroese historical study. Using archaeological and documentary evidence, we are able to present the first comprehensive distribution map of Norse settlement, which emphasizes an overwhelmingly coastal focus of considerable density. Using historical (including place-names), archaeological, and environmental evidence, we examine the nature and organization of the Viking (early Norse) and medieval (later Norse) settlement. Colonization and economic activity in the islands were strongly influenced by topographic and ecological factors. This, along with social organization, was subject to influences which may have derived, at least in part, from experiences in a Norwegian homeland.  相似文献

Larvae of the chrysomelid taxon Galerucinae, Sermylini, are known to release a fluid from dorsolateral segmental openings when disturbed. The release of this fluid resembles the discharge of secretion from well-studied exocrine defensive glands in larvae of Chrysomelinae, the putative sister group of Galerucinae. Thus, Sermylini larvae have been named “glanduliferous” ones. However, no comparative analyses of the internal structures of the segmental openings in Sermylini larvae have been available prior to this study. Therefore, segmental larval openings in 10 Sermylini species were investigated by scanning and light microscopy. Two types of segmental openings were detected: (1) the opening is visible as an integumental slit which can be opened and closed by muscles. No specific glandular structures are associated with this slit. (2) The opening is covered internally by a cuticular sac which can be everted to the outside. A cuticular duct of a gland is leading into this sac. Haemolymph is discharged from both types of openings. These structures are discussed with respect to reflex bleeding in other taxa. Furthermore, a common origin of the segmental openings in larvae of Sermylini and the segmental exocrine glands in chrysomeline larvae is critically questioned.  相似文献

Mutations in the XNP/ATR-X gene cause several X-linked mental retardation syndromes in humans. The XNP/ATR-X gene encodes a DNA-helicase belonging to the SNF2 family. It has been proposed that XNP/ATR-X might be involved in chromatin remodelling. The lack of a mouse model for the ATR-X syndrome has, however, hampered functional studies of XNP/ATR-X. C. elegans possesses one homolog of the XNP/ATR-X gene, named xnp-1. By analysing a deletion mutant, we show that xnp-1 is required for the development of the embryo and the somatic gonad. Moreover, we show that abrogation of xnp-1 function in combination with inactivation of genes of the NuRD complex, as well as lin-35/Rb and hpl-2/HP1 leads to a stereotyped block of larval development with a cessation of growth but not of cell division. We also demonstrate a specific function for xnp-1 together with lin-35 or hpl-2 in the control of transgene expression, a process known to be dependent on chromatin remodelling. This study thus demonstrates that in vivo XNP-1 acts in association with RB, HP1 and the NuRD complex during development.  相似文献

It is well documented that in the model system Aphidius ervi Haliday (Hymenoptera, Braconidae)/Acyrthosiphon pisum (Harris) (Homoptera, Aphididae) host regulation by the parasitoid larva induces in the aphid haemolymph major changes of the titer of nutritional compounds such as proteins, acylglycerols and free amino acids, in order to meet the stage-specific demands of the developing larva. Since little is known about how the larva absorbs these mobilized nutritional resources, nutrient absorption by larval stages of A. ervi was studied. In 2nd instar larvae, leucine was ten-fold accumulated in the haemocoel, and tyrosine and glutamine two-fold. Glucose and fructose were readily absorbed and fructose was extensively metabolized by larval tissues. In 3rd instars, the presence of a number of larvae that did not ingest the incubation medium enabled us to determine the respective amounts of substrate absorbed by the epidermis and the midgut. An accumulation of leucine in the haemocoel was observed only when midgut cells were involved in absorption, while the amino acid concentration within body fluids never exceeded that of the incubation medium when the uptake was performed only by epidermal cells. The immunofluorescence analysis, the mutual inhibition exerted on labeled glucose or fructose uptakes by a 100-fold excess of the sugars and the strong inhibition of uptakes induced by 0.2mM cytochalasin B support the expression of facilitative GLUT2-like transporters in the apical and basal cell membranes of midgut epithelial cells. Taken together, these results prove that both midgut and epidermis are involved in nutrient absorption throughout the parasitoid development, that GLUT2 transporters are responsible for glucose and fructose uptakes and that the chemical gradient that favors the passive influx of the two sugars is maintained by their conversion to other substrates.  相似文献

The mitochondrial respiratory chain (MRC) supplies the majority of the energy requirements of most eucaryotic cells. A null mutation in the Caenorhabditis elegans nuo-1 gene encoding a subunit of complex I (NADH-ubiquinone oxidoreductase) is lethal, leading to a developmental arrest at the third larval stage. To identify the tissues that regulate development in response to mitochondrial dysfunction, we restored nuo-1 expression with tissue-specific promoters. Only expression of nuo-1 ubiquitously or in the nervous system supported development to the adult stage. Pharyngeal expression of nuo-1 allowed development to proceed to the fourth larval stage. Expression of nuo-1 in the body muscles or in the germline had no effect. Furthermore, only ubiquitous or nervous system expression of nuo-1 allowed exit from the dauer state. Our results indicate that MRC function in the nervous system is needed to send and receive signals that control larval development and exit from dauer.  相似文献

Many species spawn in oceanic waters yet their juvenile stages use nearshore and estuarine habits and the bio-physical mechanisms by which late-larvae enter these juvenile habitats may be an important bottleneck in the population dynamics of these species. To provide parameters for the development of larval ingress models, sinking rates were measured of the late-stage larvae of six fish species: Atlantic croaker (Micropogonias undulatus), spot (Leiostomus xanthurus), Atlantic menhaden (Brevoortia tyrannus), summer flounder (Paralichthys dentatus), southern flounder (P. lethostigma), and gulf flounder (P. albigutta). Species-specific differences were found in sinking rates; Atlantic croaker had the slowest sinking rates and Atlantic menhaden and the three flounder species had the fastest sinking rates. Additionally, sinking rates increased for all species as length increased. The total amount of variability explained in sinking rates was low (20–50%), indicating a large amount of variability at the level of the individual. The observed patterns in sinking rates were then combined with previous studies on the mechanisms of larval ingress to present species-specific conceptual models of ingress.  相似文献

Early life history patterns were studied in the dominant euphausiids from the northern Gulf of Alaska (GOA) in 2001-2004. Gravid females of Thysanoessa inermis were observed in April and May. Brood size varied from 10 to 1021 eggs with an average of 138 ± 19 (95% CI) eggs female− 1. Most gravid females started to release eggs within the first 2 days of incubation. The average number of eggs released per female was similar in incubation Day 1 and 2, but significantly smaller on Day 3 and 4. About 25% of the females were continuously releasing eggs over 3 days rather than producing a single distinctive brood. In contrast, gravid females of Euphausia pacifica were observed from early July through October. Most gravid females released eggs on the first day of observation, while only 2% of females produced eggs repeatedly. Brood size varied from 20 to 246 eggs with an average of 102 ± 12 (95% CI) eggs female− 1. The relationship between E. pacifica brood size and ambient chlorophyll-a concentration was sigmoidal (r2 = 0.73), with food saturated brood size of 144 ± 14(SE, P < 0.001) eggs, and half-saturation occurring at 0.46 ± 0.02(SE, P < 0.001) mg chlorophyll-a m− 3. The average interbrood interval of E. pacifica reared at 12 °C and satiated food conditions in the laboratory was ∼ 8 days, suggesting their potential individual fecundity in the GOA was 1148-1530 eggs per spawning season. Hatching and early development (from egg to furcilia stage) was studied under 5 °C, 8 °C and 12 °C. Hatching was nearly synchronous and lasted 3-6 h, depending on incubation temperature. Development times from egg to the first furcilia stage ranged between 20 and 33 days for T. inermis, and 15 and 45 days for E. pacifica at 12 °C and 5 °C, respectively.  相似文献

Numerous species of estuarine and freshwater-tolerant crabs show an “export strategy”, i.e. an early larval downstream transport towards coastal marine waters, later zoeal development at higher salinities, and a return of the last larval stage, the megalopa, into estuaries or rivers. The speed and extent of the upstream migration of the megalopa through strong salinity gradients may be constrained by increasing hypo-osmotic stress. In an experimental laboratory study with Armases roberti, a freshwater-inhabiting sesarmid crab from the Caribbean region, we studied in the megalopa stage (after zoeal rearing at 25‰) the tolerance of reduced salinities.In the first experiment, the larvae were exposed directly to various constant salinities (1-25‰). For the second experiment, they were transferred stepwise to strongly diluted media (within 6 days from 25‰ to ≤ 3‰), simulating differential scenarios of upstream migration into brackish or freshwater habitats.When postmoult megalopae were exposed directly to salinities ≤ 3‰, they all died within 24 h. A slightly higher salt concentration (5‰), however, allowed for considerable survival (46%) through metamorphosis to the first juvenile crab stage. In treatments with continuous exposure to 10-15‰, as well as in a control group (25‰), survival to metamorphosis was significantly higher (83-96%), and the average duration of development was shorter compared to 5‰ (12-13 vs. 16 days). In the second experiment, with stepwise salinity reductions, gradual acclimation to decreasing osmotic pressures permitted a successful development to metamorphosis at ≤ 3‰ and even in freshwater (< 0.2‰).This strong physiological adaptability enables the megalopa of A. roberti to cross during its upstream migration, within a short time (6 days), strong osmotic gradients, so that metamorphosis is possible also in freshwater habitats where the conspecific adult crabs live. The speed of migration appears to be limited by physiological constraints related to changes in the capability for osmoregulation occurring during the course of the moulting cycle.  相似文献
