A study was initiated to determine the effects of various levels of ingested DDT and its metabolites and polychlorinated biphenyls on young double-crested cormorants, Phalacrocorax a. auritus, and white pelicans, Pelencanus erythrorhynchos. One phase of this research was concerned with the effects of ingested insecticides and polychlorinated biphenyls on the parasite fauna of these birds. Statistical analysis indicated a decrease in the numbers of ectoparasites on the feathers of cormorants as dosage of insecticides and as residue levels on the feathers increased. Similar results were noted with ectoparasites and gular lice of white pelicans receiving a daily dosage of either polychlorinated biphenyls or a mixture of DDT, DDD, and DDE. There were no significant differences in the numbers of endoparasites between the control and treated birds in either the cormorants or pelicans.  相似文献

The progressive accumulation of insoluble aggregates of the presynaptic protein alpha-synuclein (α-Syn) is a hallmark of neurodegenerative disorders including Parkinson's disease (PD), Multiple System Atrophy, and Dementia with Lewy Bodies, commonly referred to as synucleinopathies. Despite considerable progress on the structural biology of these aggregates, the molecular mechanisms mediating their cell-to-cell transmission, propagation, and neurotoxicity remain only partially understood. Numerous studies have highlighted the stereotypical spatiotemporal spreading of pathological α-Syn aggregates across different tissues and anatomically connected brain regions over time. Experimental evidence from various cellular and animal models indicate that α-Syn transfer occurs in two defined steps: the release of pathogenic α-Syn species from infected cells, and their uptake via passive or active endocytic pathways. Once α-Syn aggregates have been internalized, little is known about what drives their toxicity or how they interact with the endogenous protein to promote its misfolding and subsequent aggregation. Similarly, unknown genetic factors modulate different cellular responses to the aggregation and accumulation of pathogenic α-Syn species. Here we discuss the current understanding of the molecular phenomena associated with the intercellular spreading of pathogenic α-Syn seeds and summarize the evidence supporting the transmission hypothesis. Understanding the molecular mechanisms involved in α-Syn aggregates transmission is essential to develop novel targeted therapeutics against PD and related synucleinopathies.  相似文献

Tannic acid penetrates differentiating tissues differentially resulting in variable contrast, extraction and dense bodies with a lamellar substructure. The penetrability appears to correlate with the existence and/or robustness of a basal lamina. In the male genital tract, probably of mesodermal origin, tannic acid penetrates the epithelium until there is a basal lamina, but in the ectodermal bursa copulatrix it does not penetrate since there is always a basal lamina. The lamellae of the dense bodies have a center-to-center spacing of 4.65 ± 0.025 nm, dimensions which resemble those of phospholipids.  相似文献

Summary In the cambial region ofSalix dasyclados plants, extensive spherical formations of myelin-like lamellar configurations were found during the transit period between winter dormancy and reactivation of growth in early spring. The lamellar structures occurred in parenchyma cells containing tannins and were associated with spherosomes. BackgroundCardiovascular diseases (CVD) are leading cause of mortality in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Increased soluble sP-selectin and 715Thr > Pro polymorphism were studied in CVD and T2DM, but association between them hasn’t been explored in Saudi Arabia. We aimed to assess sP-selectin levels in T2DM and T2DM-associated CVD patients in comparison to healthy control cohort. Also, we sought to investigate relationship between Thr715Pro polymorphism and sP-selectin levels and disease state.MethodsThis is a cross-sectional case-control study. sP-selectin level (measured by Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay) and prevalence of Thr715Pro polymorphism (assessed by Sanger sequencing) were investigated in 136 Saudi participants. The study comprised 3 groups: group1 included 41 T2DM patients; group 2 (48 T2DM patients with CVD), and group 3 (47 healthy controls).ResultssP-selectin levels were significantly higher in diabetics and diabetics + CVD groups as compared to the corresponding control. In addition, results showed that the prevalence of 715Thr > Pro polymorphism is 11.75 % in the study population amongst the three study groups (9.55 % Thr/Pro, and 2.2 % Pro/Pro). No statistical difference was found between sP-selectin levels in subject carrying the wildtype genotype of this polymorphism and these who carry the mutant gene. There could be an association between this polymorphism and T2DM, whilst the polymorphism may protect diabetic patients from having CVD. However, odds ratio is not statistically significant in both cases.ConclusionOur study supports the previous researches’ results that Thr715Pro is neither influencing the sP-selectin level nor the risk of CVD in T2DM patients.  相似文献
