This study examines the influence of current velocity in the toxiceffect of copper in diatom-dominated biofilms grown in artificial channels.Effects on community structure, algal biomass and photosynthesis (carbonincorporation) caused by 15 g L–1 of copperwere tested at contrasting (1 and 15 cm s–1)velocities. Moreover, a possible threshold on the effect of copper on algalbiomass and photosynthesis related to current velocity was examined by usingprogressively increasing current velocity (1 to 50 cms–1) at 15 g L–1 Cu.Chlorophyll-a decreased ca. 50% as a result of addition of15 g L–1 Cu. Chlorophyll decrease occurredearlier at 15 cm s–1 than at 1 cms–1 when adding 15 g L–1Cu. Copper also caused a remarkable decrease in carbon incorporation(from 30 to ca. 50%), which was produced earlier at 15 cms–1 (three days) than at 1 cms–1 (seven days). Some taxa were affected by thecombination of copper and current velocity. Both Achnanthesminutissima and Stigeoclonium tenue becomedominant at 15 cm s–1 in the presence of copper.Significant inhibition of algal growth in 15 g L–1Cu occurred at low (1 cm s–1) and highvelocities (50 cm s–1), but not at intermediatevelocity (20 cm s–1). The experiments indicatethat current velocity triggers the effect that copper has on diatom-dominatedbiofilms, and that the effect is more remarkable at low and high than atintermediate current velocities. 相似文献

In the absence of longitudinal data, the current presence and severity of disease can be measured for a sample of individuals to investigate factors related to disease incidence and progression. In this article, Bayesian discrete-time stochastic models are developed for inference from cross-sectional data consisting of the age at first diagnosis, the current presence of disease, and one or more surrogates of disease severity. Semiparametric models are used for the age-specific hazards of onset and diagnosis, and a normal underlying variable approach is proposed for modeling of changes with latency time in disease severity. The model accommodates multiple surrogates of disease severity having different measurement scales and heterogeneity among individuals in disease progression. A Markov chain Monte Carlo algorithm is described for posterior computation, and the methods are applied to data from a study of uterine leiomyoma. 相似文献

Using the patch-clamp technique, we observed profound oscillations of the whole-vacuole outward current across the tonoplast
of Mesembryanthemum crystallinum L. (common ice plant). These current oscillations showed a clear voltage dependence and appeared at membrane potentials more
positive than 90–100 mV. This paper describes the oscillations in terms of two separate mechanisms. First, the Mesembryanthemum vacuolar membrane shows a negative slope conductance at membrane potentials more positive than 100–120 mV. The fact that
the oscillations and the negative slope conductance show a similar threshold potential suggests that (part of) the same mechanism
is involved in both phenomena. The second mechanism involved is the voltage drop across the series resistance. As a result,
the potential actually experienced by the vacuolar membrane deviates from the command potential defined by the patch-clamp
amplifier. This deviation depends in an Ohmic manner on the current magnitude. We suggest that the interplay of the negative
slope conductance and the voltage drop across the series resistance can cause a positive feedback which is responsible for
the current oscillations.

Differential recruitment of benthic communities on neighboring artificial and natural reefs 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Shedding light on the ability of benthic artificial reef (AR) communities to resemble those of a natural reef (NR) is of great importance if we are to harness ARs as tools for rehabilitation and restoration of degraded marine habitats. Studying recruitment processes to experimental settlement plates attached to ARs and NRs reveal the factors that shape community structure at the two reef types, and determine the ability of an AR to support communities similar to those found in adjacent natural habitats. In this study, conducted in Eilat (Red Sea), we used settlement plates to test the hypothesis that differences in benthic communities between ARs and NRs are derived from differential recruitment processes. A monitoring period of 18 months revealed great differences in the recruitment of corals and other benthic communities between the studied ARs and adjacent NRs. The ARs were either made of PVC or metal and 10-17 years old when the study commenced. The recruitment of soft corals reflected the species assemblage found in the area, consisting mainly of the family Nephtheidae and Xeniidae, species, while that of stony corals was mostly determined by the life history traits of the recruited taxa, e.g., the opportunistic nature of the family Pocilloporidae. Benthic organisms, mainly filter feeders like bryozoans, bivalves, sponges and tunicates, were more abundant at the ARs than at the NRs, mainly on the underside of the plates. We suggest that this differential recruitment resulted from a synergistic effect of abiotic and biotic factors, including current regime, sedimentation load and larval settlement preferences, which subsequently differentiated the composition of the benthic communities at the ARs and NRs. Thus, in order to construct an AR for restoration purposes, it must offer similar structural features to those found in the natural surrounding, leading to recruitment of local taxa. However, if the AR and NR will differ structurally, the composition of recruits will also differ and eventually the communities at the two reef types will become distinct, hereby increasing the species diversity in the area. 相似文献

The actions of the ciliary neurotrophic factor (CNTF) were assessed on adult mouse skeletal muscle L-type Ca2+ currents and on Ca2+ release from sarcoplasmic reticulum. Currents were measured with the whole cell patch clamp technique. Ca2+ signals in response to single action potentials were recorded with Fluo3-AM. CNTF (20 ng/ml) reversibly reduced the amplitude of Ca2+ channel currents by 50% within 15 min. In addition, CNTF greatly increased the rate of inactivation during depolarizing pulses and shifted the steady state inactivation curve by -12 mV. The effects of CNTF were mimicked by the PKC activator PMA and prevented by the PKC-inhibitor chelerythrine. In contrast to the effects on the Ca2+ conductance, charge movement and Ca2+ signals remained unaffected by CNTF. These results suggest that CNTF can rapidly decrease muscle Ca2+ channel currents by promoting inactivation, probably through an intracellular PKC-dependent mechanism. 相似文献

In the frame of the largest French project of artificial production reefs, initiated by the city of Marseilles in 2001, the present study aimed at describing the hydrodynamic pattern of the coastal area considered, by the use of a 3D numerical modelling. Results were local wind statistics, bottom current fields and drifting particle maps. The knowledge of the hydrodynamic connexions between particle (such as larvae) sources or targeted areas linked to the reefs, allows us to explain the success or failure of the reefs' colonizing.
