We present here an improvement to the analysis of oxygen evolution with four sigma coefficients (4-S) by computing z, the sum of the S-state probabilities, which was introduced earlier (Delrieu and Rosengard 1987, Biochim Biophys Acta 892: 163–171). We demonstrate that z is equal to the ratio of two consecutive Mean Y (the estimation of the steady state oxygen production based on local properties) found by three sigma analysis. The quantity z is useful for computing double-hits, and for showing the inactivation/activation processes of PS II complexes. Three sigma analysis assumes z=1 exactly; since this is not verified, it is argued that four sigma analysis is closer to the real workings of the water oxidizing complex. Oxygen evolution can then be interpreted in the frame of a modified Kok's model where the sum of the probabilities equals z. We therefore suggest that the closer fitting of four sigma analysis to oxygen production data is not simply due to an extra, unnecessary variable, but to the fact that PS II complexes can be inactivated and reactivated under flashing light. Finally, in order to facilitate the use of four sigma analysis, a computer program is made available upon request.  相似文献

The nucleotide sequences of the plastid 16S rDNA of the multicellular red alga Antithamnion sp. and the 16S rDNA/23S rDNA intergenic spacers of the plastid DNAs of the unicellular red alga Cyanidium caldarium and of Antithamnion sp. were determined. Sequence comparisons support the idea of a polyphyletic origin of the red algal and the higher-plant chloroplasts. Both spacer regions include the unsplit tRNAIle (GAU) and tRNAAla (UGC) genes and so the plastids of both algae form a homogeneous group with those of chromophytic algae and Cyanophora paradoxa characterized by small-sized rDNA spacers in contrast to green algae and higher plants. Nevertheless, remarkable sequence differences within the rRNA and the tRNA genes give the plastids of Cyanidium caldarium a rather isolated position.  相似文献

Seeds of theHordeum patagonicum complex were collected from the field and grown in the greenhouse. The aim was to take a sample of members of the complex, and on the basis of the phenotypic similarities in some morphological and physiological characters, determine whether distinct groups exist. When cluster analyses, to generate hypotheses, and orthodox statistical procedures, for hypotheses obtained a priori, were applied to the reproductive morphology, germination and flowering patterns, onlyH. patagonicum subsp.magellanicum, out of the five recognized taxa, could be distinguished consistently. The remaining four taxa, which overlapped considerably, could be re-formed into three groups whose centroids were different but whose ranges of variation were not distinct from each other. We conclude that the highly cross-compatible members of theH. patagonicum complex, first defined as species and later redefined as subspecies are probably no more than biotypes.  相似文献

Being based solely on neontological data, all «unique parent» evolutionary hypotheses, of which «Mitochondrial Eve» is one, fall into the category ofscala naturae. Mathematical treatment of neontological data bases, using cladistic approaches does not confer the status of scientific hypotheses onto such scenarios. Apart from these fundamental problems, such hypotheses are flawed on a number of other bases, including the fact that there is a proportion of parental contribution to mitochondrial lineages, despite widely publicised statements that mithocondrial DNA in mammals is «strictly» maternally inherited. Other weaknesses of «unique mother» hypotheses on that their proponents endeavour to describe the evolution of diploid organisms on the basis of variability in extant haploid organelles, the evolution of which is delinked from that of the diploid organism. A further difficulty is that it is not possible to reconstruct interspecific relationships on the basis of intraspecific variability. There is a general ignorance among proponents of «unique mother» hypotheses regarding the distribution of biological variability on the surface of the globe, a fact which renders the molecular clock inaccurate, and which upsets the simplistic proposal that molecular diversity equates with time. «Unique mother» scenarios are also invalidated by the presence of shared chromosome and other polymorphisms in african great apes and humans at similar percentages in the different lineages, a fact which indicates that these evolving populations did not experience «bottlenecks». These and other difficulties effectively refute the «Mitochondrial Eve» hypothesis, which in any case much resembles creationism of a special kind, in which the offspring of a breeding pair are visualised as belonging to a species different from its parents. Such extreme examples of the punctuational mode of evolution are highly likely to be incorrect.  相似文献

This comunication has two primary aims concerned with mineralized tissue biology (e.g. hard tissue biology of bone and tooth) research in human evolutionary studies: First, to introduce the literature and the methods (at the time of this symposium) so that one has an idea of the nature of this research and where one can go for details of the methodologies, etc; Second — and of primary concern here — to discuss issues that have come to light as a result of these studies mainly because of its recent beginnings as a subfield within paleoanthropology. Issues related to skeletal studies include; 1) whether different cortical surface pattens and bone tissue types influence the appearance and interpretation of bone growth activity states; 2) if SEM analyses of cortical surfaces in fossil hominids allow one to construct meaningful representations of remodeling patterns; 3) whether these representations can be used in phylogenetic arguments; and 4) how intraspecific variability would affect these issues. Issues related to dental studies include: 1) the relationship between the rate and pattern of eraly hominid dental development; 2) experimental support for the calibration of eraly hominid dental developmental rates; and 3) whether replica techniques are suitable for microanatomical studies of these sorts.  相似文献

Body morphology is said to be the all important factor in determining swimming prowess in copepods. Fusion and differentiation of the body (tagmosis) is coupled with advance into the pelagic realm of the Gymnoplea and is thought, by the provision of a rigid thoracic tagma, to promote swimming efficiency. Thus pelagic copepods are believed to be secondarily derived from bottom dwelling predecessors. Experimental evidence is presented to show that the majority of bottom dwelling harpacticoid families, including the most primitive and the most advanced, have representatives that undergo active sustained swimming movements. Such a widespread occurrence is indicative of a conservative evolutionary trait. This primitive behaviour is linked to precopulatory association which takes place necessarily in the water column; it is a feature retained by representatives of all copepod orders. The implication of cephalic appendage vibration (feeding currents) is the essential feature in the swimming success of the Gymnoplea; planktonic efficiency in these is suggested to have evolved coincident with, rather than because of increased tagmosis.  相似文献

The electrophoretic patterns of the enzyme alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) from Anastrepha fraterculus and A. obliqua were studied. Two loci were found to code for the enzyme in A. fraterculus, and three in A. obliqua. In both species, all isozymes were active in third-instar larvae. A cationic isozyme (Adh-1) was active mainly in the visceral fat body of both species. In A. fraterculus, the locus had an anionic polymorphic isozyme (Adh-3) that was detected in the parietal fat body. In addition to these two loci, a third locus for an anionic isozyme (Adh-2), which was active in the digestive tube of larvae, was present in A. obliqua and probably resulted from gene duplication. For both species, multiple forms of the isozymes are formed by binding of an NAD-carbonyl compound, as in Drosophila melanogaster. Both larvae and early pupae of A. obliqua had almost twice the specific ADH activity as A. fraterculus. The ethanol content of the host fruit infested with A. obliqua (red mombim) was also higher than that of the host fruit infested with A. fraterculus (guava).This research was supported by grants from Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnologico (CNPq-PIG 40.2486/82).  相似文献

Hyla chrysoscelis (2n=24) and H. versicolor (2n=48) are a diploid-tetraploid species pair of treefrogs. Restriction endonuclease mapping of ribosomal RNA (rRNA) gene repeat units of diploids collected from eastern and western populations reveals no differences within rRNA gene coding regions but distinctive differences within the nontranscribed spacers. A minimum of two physical maps is required to construct an rRNA gene map for the tetraploid, whose repeat units appear to be a composite, with about 50% of the elements resembling the western diploid population and about 50% resembling the eastern population. These results imply that this population of the tetraploid species may have arisen from a genetically hybrid diploid. Alternatively, the dual level of sequence heterogeneity in H. versicolor may reflect some type of gene flow between the two species. The coding region of the rRNA genes in the tetraploid differs from that in either diploid in about 20% of all repeat units, as exemplified by a BamHI site located near the 5 terminus of the 28 S rRNA gene. If the 20% variant class of 28 S rRNA gene coding sequences is expressed, then there must be two structural classes of ribosomes; if only the 80% sequence class is expressed, then a genetic control mechanism must be capable of distinguishing between the two different sequence variants. Summary We report here the complete amino acid sequences of the cytosolic and mitochondrial aspartate aminotransferases from horse heart. The two sequences can be aligned so that 48.1% of the amino acid residues are identical. The sequences have been compared with those of the cytosolic isoenzymes from pig and chicken, the mitochondrial isoenzymes from pig, chicken, rat, and human, and the enzyme fromEscherichia coli. The results suggest that the mammalian cytosolic and mitochondrial isoenzymes have evolved at equal and constant rates whereas the isoenzymes from chicken may have evolved somewhat more slowly. Based on the rate of evolution of the mammalian isoenzymes, the geneduplication event that gave rise to cytosolic and mitochondrial aspartate aminotransferases is estimated to have occurred at least 109 years ago. The cytosolic and mitochondrial isoenzymes are equally related to the enzyme fromE. coli; the prokaryotic and eukaryotic enzymes diverged from one another at least 1.3×109 years ago.  相似文献
