Summary Electro-ultrafiltration (EUF) and quantity/intensity (Q/I) parameters of soil K were compared for 14 soils from each of three soil series. The K desorbed by EUF during the first 10 min (K10) was closely correlated with the equilibrium activity ratio (AR0) for soils of the same series, but differences between series reflected the soil K-buffering capacity, indicating that K10 includes loosely held exchangeable K and is not strictly an intensity measurement. EUF values were compared with conventional soil test methods for predicting K-uptake and dry-matter yield of ryegrass grown in the glasshouse. Correlation coefficients between K uptake at the first cut were 0.80 for K10, 0.88 for Ka (the initially labile K derived from the Q/I curve), 0.92 for K35 (desorbed by EUF in 35 min) and 0.97 for Kex (1.0M ammonium acetate extraction).  相似文献

Temperate grasses frequently acquire resistance to herbivores through a symbiosis with epichloid fungi that produces alkaloids of variable deterrent effects. However, in those cases without apparent endophyte negative effects on domestic herbivores, it is not clear whether plant consumption or preference is affected or not. We performed three experiments with 1‐year‐old steers (Bos taurus, Aberdeen Angus) and the annual grass Lolium multiflorum, infected or not by Epichloë occultans to evaluate preference and to identify the underlying tolerance mechanisms. The first experiment evaluated steer preference for L. multiflorum cultivated in plots with three endophyte infection frequencies (low, medium and high), and investigated the role of canopy structure and plant nutritional traits on preference. The second experiment evaluated preference for chopped grass, offered in individual trays with contrasting infection frequencies (low and high), to discard possible effects associated with canopy structure and to focus on nutritional traits. The third experiment was performed with a tray + basket design that separated visual and olfactory stimuli from nutritional traits. High endophyte infection frequencies reduced consistently animal preference, even after short (~10 min) feeding events. However, we did not find significant evidence of plant structural, nutritional, visual or olfactory traits. Our results discarded several potential mechanisms; therefore, the dissuasive effect of fungal endophytes on animal consumption might be related to other mechanisms, including, likely, alkaloids and changes on grass metabolome.  相似文献

We tested the application of RAPD technology for identification of hybrid genomes originated from a maternal clone of Lolium perenne L. (2n = 2x = 14) bearing cytoplasmic male sterility, which was pollinated separately by five clones of Festuca arundinacea Schreb. cv. Barocco (2n = 6x = 42). Six classes of RAPD markers were recognized, specific to: 1) Festuca genome and inherited into F1 hybrid genomes, 2) Lolium genome inherited into F1 hybrid genomes, 3) Lolium-specific bands not found in F1 progeny, 4) Festuca-specific bands not found in F1 progeny, 5) new bands found only in F1 hybrid profiles, 6) bands common to all parental and F1 hybrid genotypes. RAPD data were shown to have full potential a) to serve as an unequivocal proof of genome recombination in perennial ryegrass × tall fescue hybrids, b) to identify hybrid genomes, c) to reveal phenetic relationships of the accessions from crossing families, d) to enhance, by fingerprinting, the selection of superior hybrid material for further breeding. RAPD data were found to be consistent with the festucoid phenotype of F1 hybrids. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

Remediation of soil acidity is crucial for increasing crop production and improving environmental quality of acid infertile soils. Soil incubation and greenhouse pot experiments were carried out to examine the interactions between phosphate rock (PR), coal combustion by-product (BP), dolomitic lime (L), and cellulose (C) in an acidic soil and their effects on ryegrass (Lolium perenne L. cv Linn) growth. BP and PR application increased plant P content and dry matter yield (DMY) of shoots and roots by improving soil Ca availability and reducing Al toxicity. Application of BP at low rates (5 to 10 g BP kg-1) with PR appeared to decrease both plant P content and DMY compared to PR application alone. The reduced DMY is due to an increased Al concentration in soil solution as a result of displacement of sorbed Al by Ca of BP. Increases in DMY were obtained by addition of lime along with PR and BP at low rates or by increasing BP application rates above 15 g kg-1. This improved plant response was likely related to alleviation of Al toxicity by CaCO3 contained in the BP. In addition to raising the pH to an acceptable level for plant growth, the dolomitic lime supplied needed Mg for plants, thereby maintaining a good balance between available Ca and Mg for plants in the BP- and PR-amended soils. The addition of cellulose to the BP- and PR-amended soils reduced water-soluble Al and increased DMY. Plant growth increased PR dissolution by 2.4 to 243% in a soil with low available P. Use of BP at moderate rates with PR and dolomitic lime appears to be the best combination in increasing crop yields on infertile acidic soils.  相似文献

The effect of an elevated partial pressure of CO2 (pCO2) on carbohydrate concentrations in source leaves and pseudo-stems (stubble) of Lolium perenne L. (perennial ryegrass) during regrowth was studied in a regularly defoliated grass sward in the field. The free air carbon dioxide enrichment (FACE) technology enabled natural environmental conditions to be provided. Two levels of nitrogen (N) supply were used to modulate potential plant growth. Carbohydrate concentrations in source leaves were increased at elevated pCO2, particularly at low N supply. Elevated leaf carbohydrate concentrations were related to an increased structural carbon (C) to N ratio and thus reflected an increased C availability together with a N-dependent sink limitation. Immediately after defoliation, apparent assimilate export rates (differences in the carbohydrate concentrations of young source leaves measured in the evening and on the following morning) showed a greater increase at elevated pCO2 than at ambient pCO2; however, replenishment of carbohydrate reserves was not accelerated. Distinct, treatment-dependent carbohydrate concentrations in pseudo-stems suggested an increasing degree of C-sink limitation from the treatment at ambient pCO2 with high N supply to that at elevated pCO2 with low N supply. During two growing seasons, no evidence of a substantial change in the response of the carbohydrate source in L. perenne to elevated pCO2 was found. Our results support the view that the response of L. perenne to elevated pCO2 is restricted by a C-sink limitation, which is particularly severe at low N supply.  相似文献

Comparisons within and among populations offer important insights into variation in life-history traits and possible adaptive patterns to environmental conditions. We present the results of observed differences in body size, body shape and patterns of reproduction in four separate populations of the European pond turtle Emys orbicularis in central and southern Italy – coastal ( n =3) and mountainous ( n =1) sites and pond ( n =2) and canal ( n= 2) habitats – to determine whether phenotypic plasticity affects reproductive output. Although we did not find any significant latitudinal variation in body size, we observed significant differences in body shape between canal (rounded body shape) and pond (elongated body shape) systems and smaller size with rounded shape in the mountainous population. Reproductive output is similar among populations (median=5 eggs per clutch), whereas reproductive investment (relative clutch mass to maternal body mass) is higher in the mountain population (one clutch per year) than in coastal populations (two clutches per year), suggesting differential trade-offs between geographic locality, elevation and habitat type. Turtle shell shape and geographic location together affect reproductive output in E. orbicularis in Italy.  相似文献

Abstract: Ips typographus is the main spruce pest of European forests. In most areas of the Italian Alps there are two generations per year; overwintering adults fly in May looking for trees suitable for breeding, their offspring emerge in summer, 7–8 weeks after tree colonization, and the adults of the second generation emerge in spring of the following year after overwintering under the bark or in the litter. A long‐term population monitoring was carried out in north‐east Italy with the aim at developing a prediction model able to estimate the population density of the following year. Between 1996 and 2004, pheromone traps monitored populations of I. typographus annually. Monitoring lasted 4 months (May–August), with replacement of pheromone dispensers after 8 weeks. Insects trapped before dispenser change were called ‘spring captures’ (May–June), and included both overwintering and re‐emerging adults. Beetles caught after dispenser change were called ‘summer captures’ (July–August), and included the adults of the first generation. The results show a high positive correlation between the ratio of summer and spring captures of one year (Summerx/Springx), and the ratio of total captures of the following year (Yx+1) and those of the current year (Yx) (Yx+1/Yx). Summerx/Springx lower than 0.62 indicate decreasing populations in the following year (Yx+1/Yx <1), whereas Summerx/Springx higher than 0.62 indicate increasing populations (Yx+1/Yx >1). The applicability of the model in the study of I. typographus risk of outbreak and in the forest management is discussed. The prediction of the short‐time trend of the population allows assessing its density in the following year, and therefore the risk of outbreak.  相似文献

采用菌剂接种及盆栽生物实验,研究了干旱缺水条件下放线菌对黑麦草生长和抗氧化特性的影响。结果显示:(1)干旱胁迫下,土壤中接种放线菌显著促进黑麦草的生长,其中根分蘖及根部生物量分别显著增加35.00%和37.47%;(2)接种放线菌后,黑麦草叶片的叶绿素总量和类胡萝卜素含量分别显著增加了12.02%和10.38%;(3)加菌后3种主要的抗氧化酶超氧化物歧化酶(SOD)、过氧化物酶(POD)和过氧化氢酶(CAT)较不加菌对照均增加,其增率分别为12.72%、2.38%和24.83%,其中SOD和CAT的活性增加显著。研究表明,干旱胁迫下放线菌接种土壤后,提高了黑麦草叶绿素含量和类胡萝卜素含量,增强了黑麦草抗干旱胁迫的抗氧化酶活性,可显著促进黑麦草的生长,增加其生物量。  相似文献
