Synopsis Of 23 males and 39 females of Plecodus straeleni observed for one hour each, 2 males and 14 females searched for the mouthbrooder Cyathopharynx furcifer under courtship display near or in the bower to get eggs, besides foraging for other prey to ripe off scales and skin. After finding a courting C. furcifer, they quietly waited on the substrate near the bower until it spawned. Immediately after spawning, the waiting P. straeleni dashed upon the female of C. furcifer and quickly collected the eggs. This egg-eating was achieved 5 times by 3 females who spent most of their time searching and waiting. 相似文献

Two populations of Cyclops abyssorum tatricus studied in neighbouring alpine lakes in Tatra Mountains (southern Poland) differed in their life cycles. In the lake with planktivorous fishes, Cyclops was typically monocyclic, with highly synchronized reproduction during two winter months, while in the fishless lake its reproduction was asynchronous and continued for six months. The migratory movements of reproductive potamodromus fish established in man-made tropical lakes in the dry zone of Sri Lanka were determined. It was shown that the nine indigenous riverine species do not spawn in these lakes but move into the upstream channels when sexually mature. The pattern of upstream movement was found to be species-specific although most species showed a diurnal periodicity. It is suggested that the development of totally lacustrine forms of riverine species is very unlikely to occur in the man-made lakes of Sri Lanka because of their relatively short duration time. 相似文献

Summary Long-term monolayer cultures of adult rat hepatocytes were tested for their ability to glucuronize phenol red and to maintain
initial levels of cell proteins, glucose consumption, and lactic acid production. Lactate dehydrogenase leakage served as
an index of culture status because a high value indicates cell death. Three tissue culture (TC) media formulations were the
main variables introduced to determine ideal conditions for cell survival in vitro. Investigations of long-term cultures were
preceded by studies of hepatocyte attachment to polystyrene surfaces. This attachment was influenced by the amount of substrate
deposited and the number of cells seeded, but not by the uniformity of the substrate coating. A statistical analysis of our
data revealed that in the absence of fetal bovine serum (FBS), air dried collagen (ADC) and Biomatrix (BMX) were superior
to saline precipitated collagen and fibronectin as attachment substrates. In the presence of 10% FBS, all of the substrates
performed equally.
Chee's Medium (CEM) proved to be the best for preserving cell proteins over a time course of 28 d and Williams' E medium also
performed adequately up to 14 d. The glucuronization of phenol red was at 50% of initial values at Day 7 in CEM-ADC hepatocytes
in contrast to 30% for cells in Williams' E medium and 5% for cells grown in Waymouth's. At 14 d glucuronization was still
present at 40% of original values in CEM-ADC cells but had ceased in the other two media. When BMX was used, none of the TC
media supported glucuronization levels comparable to ADC cells.

Summary Comparisons were made of attachment and viability of rainbow trout (Salmo gairdneri) hepatocytes in short-term (2 days), primary culture on plastic, collagen-coated or extracellular matrix (ECM) coated dishes.
Hepatocyte isolation routinely yielded cells with good viability (96%). Cells plated on ECM attached with high efficiency
(93%) in contrast to cells cultured on plastic or collagen (∼20%). The cells plated on ECM flattened out and formed monolayers,
while the cells on plastic and collagen rounded up and formed multi-cell aggregates in suspension. Viability of cells in all
substrates remained high over the 2 day culture period. ECM is the first substrate to support trout-hepatocyte attachment
in primary culture. Differentiated liver function was maintained in cells cultured on ECM as evidence by the induction of
tyrosine aminotransferase by hydrocortisone (200%).

In a two-year-study, the fish community of the Loosdrecht Lakes area was characterized with regard to the professional fishery and the forage base. The lakes are shallow (mean depth 2 m) and eutrophic to hypertrophic. The bream,Abramis brama, dominates the fish biomass. The pikeperch,Stizostedion lucioperca, is the main predator.Bream up to 30 cm have a slow growth rate and are in a bad condition. A faster growth rate and a better condition are shown by bream of 30 cm and more. The small bream feeds on chironomid larvae, benthic cladocerans and zooplankton. The better condition of bream over 30 cm is explained by the more efficient feeding of larger bream onChironomus plumosus larvae. Pikeperch show a fast growth rate and a good condition. Recruitment is limited by the low densities of smelt,Osmerus eperlanus, leaving cannibalism as the most important way for the 0+ pikeperch to become piscivorous and to manifest a fast growth.The impact of the professional gillnet fishery on bream and pikeperch is small because the mesh sizes in use are as large as 75–100 mm bar mesh.The planktivorous 0+ pikeperch consumes mainly the carnivorous zooplanktersLeptodora kindtii and cyclopoids. The zooplankton community lacks large herbivorous species likeDaphnia hyalina, capable of consuming bluegreens. The contents of alimentary tracts of stomachless phytoplanktivorous fish, including silvercarp (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix), Esomus danrica thermoicos, and Amblypharyngodon meletinus were investigated microscopically and compared with those of Tilapia (Oreochromis mossambicus, a fish with stomach).The predominance of detritus in the food and the low efficiency with which phytoplankton is utilized prove, that stomachless fish are not primarily herbivorous. The possibility of omnivorous feeding as an alternative is discussed. These results may contribute to our understanding of the role of filterfeeders in aquaculture and ecosystems. 相似文献
