An altitudinal sampling transect was established in a subtropical mountain river to determine if replacement between two mayfly faunal components (oligostenothermal and polystenothermal) occurred. We detected three main groups: Group A, species with high abundance at higher stations, declining abruptly downstream; Group B, species with maximum abundance at lower elevations; either declining abruptly upstream or absent from higher elevations; and Group C, species with little elevational change. The physical and chemical variables did not change abruptly with altitude during our winter sampling, although the distribution of groups A and B species did. The observed distributional patterns of groups A and B do not appear to be correlated with variations in the physical and chemical variables surveyed.  相似文献

Diversity of marine fungi in the Gulf of Mexico remains unknown for the most part, therefore the geographical distribution patterns of these microorganisms are mostly unknown too. Twelve sandy beaches located in this sea were sampled to evaluate the diversity of marine fungi, revealed by fruiting on natural substrata incubated in the laboratory for up to 12 months. Species richness and diversity differed between beaches, and corresponded with the presence of main and highly polluted river mouths, nearshore marine environments, and core industrial and port developments. Contaminants and local anthropogenic activities may be reducing the diversity of marine ascomycetes. Connections between beaches and different nearshore habitats explain the high diversity observed, since they represent a varied source of substrata for decomposition and heterogeneous environmental conditions. We recognized four main local species distribution patterns. Moreover, the constrained correspondence analysis showed that temperature is a major environmental variable affecting the distribution of these fungi. By a linear regression we showed a significant relationship between temperature and diversity.  相似文献

Intertidal macroalgae often experience greater risk of dislodgment with increasing size because of underscaling of breaking force of their stipes relative to drag on their thalli. This ratio (breaking force/drag) indicates safety from breakage at a given flow speed, with values greater than one indicating safety from breakage and values lower than one indicating danger of breakage. We examined this force ratio for the largest thalli of two species of co-dominant, red algae, Chondrus crispus Stackhouse and Mastocarpus stellatus Stack. In With. (Guiry), in four seasons at two wave exposures. During fall and winter, the largest thalli in both populations were dislodged resulting in a decrease in mass of the largest thalli found. This decrease was greater for Chondrus than for Mastocarpus, but their mass-specific force ratios (at 0.55 m s−1) were equal indicating similar size-specific risk of dislodgment. The equality of force ratios was underlain by two similarities: (1) breaking force was independent of mass and not different between species; (2) mass-specific drag was not different between species. These similarities were underlain by dissimilar causes: (i) similarity in breaking force (the product of cross-sectional area and material strength) occurred because greater material strength of Mastocarpus compensated for greater mass-specific cross-sectional area of Chondrus; (ii) similarity in mass-specific drag (a function of planform area and the coefficient of drag) occurred because greater drag coefficients for Mastocarpus compensated for greater mass-specific planform areas of Chondrus. The similarity in force ratio, if it held at season- and site-relevant flow speeds, would suggest that during seasons of minimal growth and high wave exposure, the mass of the largest thalli of both species should be the same. Chondrus, however, had a greater mass at both sites in all seasons. Chondrus experienced greater decreases in mass probably because it grew larger and larger thalli are less safe. Extrapolation of a site-relevant force ratio for Chondrus in the fall revealed (1) that the site-relevant force ratio did not differ between exposures even though the mass-specific force ratio was greater at the protected site, and (2) a paradoxical result that all Chondrus thalli studied ought to have dislodged, but had not. This paradox may be resolved by consideration of the protection conferred by canopies of Chondrus: a canopy may effectively raise its site-relevant force ratio. Perhaps differences in protection conferred by different canopies explain why larger Chondrus persist with Mastocarpus even given a similarity in mass-specific force ratio.  相似文献

We examined the spatial heterogeneity in three sessile rocky shore organisms, the mussel Perna perna, the barnacle Octomeris angulosa (Sowerby) and the red alga Gelidium pristoides (Turn.) at a range of continuous local scales along horizontal transects within mid- and upper mussel beds of South African shores. We also examined the relationships between variability of organisms and topographic features (rock depressions, slope, aspect), and between mussel, barnacle and algal variability over the same scales. To estimate spatial heterogeneity, we analyzed scaling properties of semivariograms using a fractal approach. Relationships between different variables at the different scales were examined by cross-semivariograms. Spatial dependence of P. perna variability increased with spatial dependence of topographic variability, so that scaling regions of mussel and topographic distributions corresponded well. This relationship often improved with larger local scales (mussel cover increased with depressions, steeper slope and aspect towards waves), while at smaller spatial scales, variability in mussel cover was less well explained by variability in topography. The variability of the barnacle O. angulosa exhibited spatial dependence, even on topographically unstructured shores. In contrast, the distribution of the alga G. pristoides revealed high fractal dimensions, showing spatial independence on topographically unstructured shores. Algae also showed a very strong negative relationship with mussels at most local scales, and a negative relationship with barnacles in upper zones, especially at larger local scales. Barnacles may show clear spatial dependence because of hydrodynamics (at larger local scales) and the need to find a future mate in close proximity (at smaller local scales), while algae may show a strong negative relationship with mussels because of competition for space.  相似文献

In situ measurements of both community metabolism (primary production and respiration) and PAM fluorometry were conducted during emersion on intertidal sediments in the Mont Saint-Michel Bay, in areas where oysters and mussels were cultivated. Results highlighted a low benthic metabolism compared to other intertidal areas previously investigated with the same methods. Comparisons between gross community primary production and relative electron transport rates confirmed this statement. More specifically, primary productivity remained very low all over the year, whereas the associated microalgal biomass was estimated to be high. We suggest that the microphytobenthic community studied was characterized by a self-limitation of its primary productivity by its own biomass, as previously shown in Marennes-Oléron Bay for example. The almost permanent high biomass would represent a limiting factor for micromigration processes within the first millimetres of the sediment. This could be explained by very low resuspension processes occurring in the western part of the bay, enhanced by the occurrence of numerous aquaculture structures that could decrease tidal currents in the benthic boundary layer. Holling’s (1992) proposition that discontinuities in biotic and abiotic processes generate structure in ecological systems is examined experimentally by imposing size-specific perturbations on marine sediment assemblages. Two kinds of perturbations were applied: organic enrichment and predation, each at two levels. Perturbations significantly affected the densities and relative abundance of the main invertebrate taxa and these effects were consistent with the known effects of enrichment and predation. However, there was little evidence of significant treatment effects on the overall benthic biomass or abundance size spectrum, supporting the contention that the spectrum is conservative and is probably constrained by habitat architecture. The major epibenthic communities on subtidal rocks of Palaeochori Bay and the marine tract on the southern coast of Milos Island (Greece) were described down to 44 m depth. Six sites were investigated by snorkelling and SCUBA diving. Samples, photographs and video images were also taken to integrate information. Three out of the six sites were close to hydrothermal vents, a common feature in the area. In total, nine major epibenthic communities were found, most of which were characterised by a diverse algal growth down to the maximum depth explored. Macrobenthic cover was severely reduced only in the close proximity of vents, a white flocculent bacterial mat covering the rock at the point from which fluid escaped. Large-scale effects of vents on the epibenthic communities were not detected. However, the abundance of species with warm-water affinity was recognisable in both algal and animal dominated communities, which may be related to higher winter temperature in the vent area. Epifaunal communities under overhangs were composed of distinct groups of suspension feeders at vent as compared to non-vent sites: this might indicate differences in trophic conditions. Mounds of the bioconstructional coralline alga Mesophyllum lichenoides were conspicuous only at vent sites, thus suggesting enhanced biodeposition of carbonates due to vent activity.  相似文献

Few studies have examined functional adrenal zonation throughout human life. Adrenals from 61 surgical/autopsy patients from 1 day old to 92 years old who had no clinical endocrinological/mineralocorticoid abnormalities were assessed for immunohistochemically defined adrenal zonation. The zona glomerulosa (zG) was well developed in all 11 patients ranging in age from newborn to the 30s. After 40 years of age, however, the zG occupied less than one-quarter of the adrenal circumference, suggestive of zG involution. The other subcapsular areas were occupied by the progenitor zone (zP), which expressed neither cytochrome P450aldo nor P45011β but 3β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase and P450scc, although some autopsy cases had adrenals with zG zonation because of secondary aldosteronism, and others who had experienced severe stresses showed subcapsular zona fasciculata (zF). In conclusion, the adrenal cortex consists of homogeneous zG-topped columns from birth to adolescence. Subsequently, in the fifth decade of life, the cortex is reconstituted by integration of three types of cortical columns: scattered zG-topped columns and zonal zP-topped columns, the latter having the ability for bidirectional differentiation into either zG-topped columns or zF-topped columns, according to secondary aldosteronism or the presence of severe stresses. Such adrenocortical remodeling is ascribed to high-sodium/low-potassium diets.  相似文献
