There is considerable concern about conservation of biodiversity in highly disturbed and urbanized environments, although a very large proportion of biodiversity (i.e. the small and cryptic invertebrates) have been little studied in this regard. Many biogenic structures (e.g. coral reefs, mussel beds, foliose algae) provide habitat for a large number of small invertebrates. The features of these habitats to which these animals respond are complex and poorly documented. Invasive species are increasing in abundance and diversity in many disturbed estuaries, but most previous studies have concentrated on effects of invasive species on surrounding macroscopic assemblages. This study examines the assemblages of small invertebrates and algae living in natural patches of coralline turf and in patches of the invasive mussel, Mytilus galloprovincialis, on seawalls in Sydney Harbour. Although most taxa identified were common to both habitats, they were generally more abundant in turf than in the mussels, especially the more widespread and numerous taxa. Few taxa were unique to either habitat and those were generally sparse and patchy. In addition, there were relatively more smaller animals in the algal turf than in the mussels, although it is not known whether these were juveniles of adults present in both habitats, or different species. These data show that coralline turf and mussel beds do not provide similar intertidal habitat for associated assemblages and that overgrowth of natural biota by mussels may have strong indirect effects on associated assemblages. These warrant further experimental investigation, so that the effects of invasive species on local biodiversity can be better understood and managed.  相似文献

The influence of biotic interactions in structuring macroinfaunal communities of exposed sandy beaches, an unstable habitat characterized by strong physical forces, is generally considered negligible. We investigated the hypothesis that competitive interactions during burrowing could potentially affect the intertidal distribution and abundance of macroinfaunal animals of sandy beaches using two species of invertebrates, a hippid crab, Emerita analoga, and a bivalve, Mesodesma donacium, common along the coast of Chile. Spatial overlap in the intertidal distributions of these species was dynamic, varying with abundance, location, time of year and tide. Highest density zones of each species were often distinctly separated at low tide and spatial overlap in their distributions decreased significantly with increasing density, suggesting density dependence of the interactions. Negative relationships between densities of the two species at the smallest spatial scale examined also suggested active interactions among individuals. Over a tidal cycle, peak densities of the two species overlapped suggesting that interactions could occur frequently. Burrowing performance of E. analoga varied between size classes in three experimental densities of clams (5, 10 and 15 clams 0.008 m-2) and in controls with no clams. Burrowing times of large crabs were significantly longer (~twofold) in all densities of clams than in controls, while those of small crabs did not differ significantly among treatments and controls. Large crabs also displaced clams from the sand while burrowing suggesting that two mechanisms of direct interference can occur, both of which could increase exposure of individuals involved to active swash and transport across or along the beach with potentially negative consequences. Our results suggest that competitive interactions capable of affecting zonation and population and community biology on a number of scales can occur among burrowing macroinfauna on exposed sandy beaches. Those interactions could be more ecologically significant than previously appreciated and may contribute to patterns observed in community structure and zonation on sandy beaches. Our results illustrate the potential importance of negative biological interactions in a physically stressful environment.  相似文献

Silty and clayey sediments predominate in the bottom sediments of the deep basin of northern Ladoga. Chemical fractionation of organic constituents of the sediments indicate prevalence of chemically stable fractions in most samples. The sedimentary diatom assemblages contain large numbers of littoral taxa, but more than 90% of the total counts of frustules belong to planktonic forms. The macro- and meiozoobenthic communities are characterized by a limited number of species, and the biomasses are low as a result of low temperatures and the small amount of organic matter entering the sediments. There are several restricted areas, e.g. shallow bays, in which pollution by pulp and paper mill or sewage effluents has led into significant changes in the benthic conditions, including increased organic content and heavy metal concentrations of the sediments. There is no apparent change in radioisotope activity, and maximum values do not exceed the natural activity of Karelian granites. Benthic biocoenoses have been affected especially near the sources of anthropogenic pollution, where extensive lifeless areas, polysaprobic zones, and morphological deformities of invertebrates have been observed. Some definite changes have taken place even in the deep profundal benthic communities (e.g. decline of Pallasea quadrispinosa and Gammaracanthus loricatus, increase of Potamothrix hammoniensis and Limnodrilus spp.) and sedimentary diatom assemblages in the open lake (increase of Diatoma elongatum, Asterionella formosa and Aulacoseira italica) since the 1960's. Since the closure of two of the pulp mills and diversion of effluents at a third site, the situation has locally improved, especially at those sites where water exchange is effective.  相似文献

The structure of rocky intertidal communities may be influenced by large-scale patterns of productivity. In this study we examine the in situ rates of production by intertidal epilithic microalgae (chlorophyll a production per unit area per month), intertidal nutrient concentrations (nitrates, nitrites, phosphates and silicates), and standing stocks of different functional-form groups of macroalgae around the South African coast, and their relationships to consumer biomass. Clear gradients of in situ intertidal primary production and nutrient concentrations were recorded around the South African coast, values being highest on the west coast, intermediate on the south and lowest on the east coast. Primary production by intertidal epilithic microalgae was correlated with nutrient availability and could also be related to nearshore phytoplankton production. The dominance patterns of different functional forms of macroalgae changed around the coast, with foliose algae prevalent on the west coast and coralline algae on the east coast. However, overall macroalgal standing stocks did not reflect the productivity gradient, being equally high on the east and west coasts, and low in the south. Positive relationships existed between the average biomass of intertidal intertebrate consumers (grazers and filter-feeders) and intertidal productivity, although only the grazers were directly connected to in situ production by epilithic intertidal microalgae. The maximum body size of a widely distributed limpet, Patella granularis, was also positively correlated with level of in situ primary production. The maximal values of biomass attained by intertidal filter-feeders were not related to intertidal primary production, and were relatively constant around the coast. At a local scale, filter-feeder biomass is known to be strongly influenced by wave action. This implies that the local-scale water movements over-ride any effects that large-scale gradients of primary production may have on filter-feeders. The large-scale gradient in intertidal productivity around the coast is thus strongly linked with grazer biomass and individual body size, but any effect it has on filter-feeder biomass seems subsidiary to the local effects of wave action.  相似文献

Coralline algae are conspicuous members of many marine assemblages, especially those characterized by intense grazing pressure. We explored whether articulated species, especially Corallina vancouveriensis, depend on grazing invertebrates to both establish and flourish in an exposed rocky intertidal setting, and whether this plant–grazer relationship varied over more than three orders of magnitude (≈100–>300,000 μm). Three experimental manipulations, supplemented by observations on recruitment, demonstrated that (i) C. vancouveriensis failed to recover rapidly from disturbed areas when grazers were experimentally excluded; (ii) recruitment occurred in the presence of grazers; (iii) increasing surface texture of molded surfaces enhanced coralline recruitment more when grazers were present; and (iv) settlement occurred predominately in microtopographical low areas of a molded surface, whereas a competitively superior fleshy red alga tended to recruit to high areas. These results confirm that coralline algal establishment and persistence are enhanced by grazers and reveal that this relationship is consistent over a range of biologically relevant scales.  相似文献

Understanding the physiological abilities of organisms to cope with heat stress is critical for predictions of species’ distributions in response to climate change. We investigated physiological responses (respiration and heart beat rate) of the ectotherm limpet Patella vulgata to heat stress events during emersion and the role of seasonal and microclimatic acclimatization for individual thermal tolerance limits. Individuals were collected from 5 microhabitats characterized by different exposure to solar radiation in the high intertidal zone of a semi-exposed rocky shore in winter and summer of 2014. Upper thermal tolerance limits (heat coma temperatures – HCTs, and heart rate Arrhenius break temperatures - ABTs) were determined for individuals from each microhabitat in both seasons under laboratory conditions. While we found a clear seasonal acclimatization, i.e., higher HCTs and ABTs in summer than in winter, we did not find evidence for microhabitat-specific responses that would suggest microclimatic acclimatization. However, operative limpet temperatures derived from in-situ temperature measurements suggest that individuals from sun exposed microhabitats have a much narrower thermal safety margins than those from less exposed surfaces or within crevices. Microhabitat specific thermal safety margins caused by high thermal heterogeneity at small spatial scales and the lack of short term acclimatization will likely shape small scale distribution patterns of intertidal species in response to the predicted increase in the frequency and intensity of heat waves.  相似文献

Estuarine intertidal soft-bottom macrobenthic infauna of the Tagus estuary was characterised using different mesh size sieves and sediment sampling depth. The study sampled 105 sites using a hand held 0.01 m2 corer. The top layer (0–5 cm) was sieved through nested 1.0 and 0.5 mm meshes whereas the bottom layer (5–20 cm) was through a 1 mm mesh. The total survey took 26 taxa of more than 5800 individuals and a total wet weight biomass of over 650 g. The top layer, using both sieves, gathered 23 taxa (92% of the total), more than 5600 specimens (96%) but less than 8 g of biomass (1%) whereas the 1.0 mm sieve retained 21 taxa (91%), more than 1700 specimens (31%) and almost 7 g of biomass (1%). Abundance was dominated by small annelids, of which Streblospio shrubsolii was 68%, whereas biomass was dominated by molluscs, with the bivalve Scrobicularia plana representing 98%. Multivariate analyses showed an abundance pattern where the top layer data was very similar to that obtained with both layers. The bottom layer data were needed to accurately represent the total biomass pattern. The macrofaunal spatial pattern identified with the 0.5 mm sieve data differed from that identified by the 1.0 mm and was essential to discriminate a faunal assemblage located along the upper part of the shore. It was concluded that in order to characterize the macrofauna community structure, based on the presence/absence of taxa, the top layer and a 1.0 mm sieve would be sufficient. An abundance-based characterization requires the top layer and a 0.5 mm sieve whereas a biomass-based characterization requires data for both layers but it is sufficient to use the 1.0 mm sieve. The size structure of deep-sea meio- and macrobenthos was studied using 12 USNEL box corer samples collected in the Western Pacific. Both macro- and meiobenthos decreased in abundance with increasing water depth, as expected, but contrary to previous findings, the rate of decrease did not differ significantly between the two size classes of organisms. The median size index of total meiobenthos decreased with increasing water depth, while when the vertical distribution of organisms in the sediment was considered, such a trend was restricted to the organisms found in the upper 1 cm layer. In contrast, the median size of the nematodes increased with increasing water depth, and a possible cause for this correlation is discussed.  相似文献
