Amendment of Articles 8, 9, 10, 21 and 78 of the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature to expand and refine methods of publication

The International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature has voted in favour of a revised version of the amendment to the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature that was proposed in 2008. The purpose of the amendment is to expand and refine the methods of publication allowed by the Code, particularly in relation to electronic publication. The amendment establishes an Official Register of Zoological Nomenclature (with ZooBank as its online version), allows electronic publication after 2011 under certain conditions, and disallows publication on optical discs after 2012. The requirements for electronic publications are that the work be registered in ZooBank before it is published, that the work itself state the date of publication and contain evidence that registration has occurred, and that the ZooBank registration state both the name of an electronic archive intended to preserve the work and the ISSN or ISBN associated with the work. Registration of new scientific names and nomenclatural acts is not required. The Commission has confirmed that ZooBank is ready to handle the requirements of the amendment.     

HUPO 2011: The new Cardiovascular Initiative - integrating proteomics and cardiovascular biology in health and disease

A newly reorganized HUPO Cardiovascular Initiative was announced at the HUPO 2011 Cardiovascular Initiative Workshop at Geneva. The new initiative is now part of the biology- and disease-driven component of the HUPO Human Proteome Project (B/D-HPP). Here we report the recent achievements and future directions of the initiative, and offer a perspective on the present challenges of cardiovascular proteomics and its integration with the cardiovascular biology community at large.

随着医学教育的革新,PBL(Problem-based Learning)作为以问题为基础、学生为中心、培养学生自主学习能力的一种新型教学模式,逐渐成为国际现代医学教学改革的核心。本文在简单介绍PBL教学模式的衍生发展的基础上,结合笔者几年来的留学生教学经验和目前留学生教学的现状,阐述了在留学生精神病学教学中开展PBL教学的必要性,进而提出了适合留学生教学的PBL教学具体方案。     

Role of Immunohistochemistry in Staging Diffuse Large B-cell Lymphoma (DLBCL)

The use of immunohistochemistry (IHC) in staging bone marrow in non-Hodgkin''s lymphoma (NHL) is largely limited to ambiguous cases, particularly those with lymphoid aggregates. Its role in routine clinical practice remains unestablished. This study aimed to determine whether the routine use of IHC in diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) would improve the detection of lymphomatous involvement in the bone marrow. It also sought to determine the impact of IHC on predicting survival compared with routine histological diagnosis using hematoxylin and eosin (H&E), Giemsa, and reticulin staining. The bone marrow trephines of 156 histologically proven DLBCL cases were assessed on routine histology, and IHC using two T-cell markers (CD45RO and CD3), two B-cell markers (CD20 and CD79a), and κ and λ light chains. IHC detected lymphomatous involvement on an additional 11% cases compared with histology alone. Although both routine histology and IHC were good predictors of survival, IHC was better at predicting survival on stepwise multivariate Cox regression analysis. IHC performed routinely on bone marrow trephines has the ability to improve detection of occult lymphoma in experienced hands. Furthermore, it is a better predictor of survival compared with routine histological examination alone. (J Histochem Cytochem 56:893–900, 2008)     

Cash cows,backdoor migrants,or activist citizens? International students,citizenship, and rights in Australia

Since the late 1990s, the intersection of education and migration policies in Australia has shifted international students from transient consumers to potential citizens. This article analyses responses to the ‘problem’ of international students as consumers, workers, and migrants, particularly the conceptualization of their rights and protections, and the ways students have been positioned as both passive subjects and activist citizens. The article provides a theoretical review of academic, government, community, and media responses to international students in general and the consequences of the education-migration nexus in particular. It argues that discourses of human rights and consumer rights have become increasingly interconnected in these debates. This analysis adds to the emerging literature on changing conceptions of rights and citizenship in neoliberal contexts, and also illuminates the social and political consequences of the education-migration nexus in Australia. This will have resonance for countries who have implemented a raft of similar policies.     

Induction by an hepatic carcinogen, 1-nitroso-5,6-dihydrouracil, of single and double strand breaks of liver DNA with rapid repair

The nitrosoureas derived from 3 naturally occurring ureides were administered to rats and the velocity sedimentation of hepatic DNA in alkaline and neutral sucrose gradients determined. The potent hepatocarcinogen 1-nitroso-5,6-dihydrouracil induced apparent double strand as well as single strand breaks in liver DNA within 30 minutes. This damage seemed to be repaired within 4 hours. In contrast, 1-nitrosohydantoin and δ-nitroso-L-citrulline, neither of which are known hepatocarcinogens, did not modify the velocity sedimentation of hepatic DNA.     

A CAL program to teach the basic principles of genetic engineering—a change from the traditional approach

An interactive computer-assisted learning program written for the BBC microcomputer to teach the basic principles of genetic engineering is described. The pro-gram makes extensive use of colour, graphics, and animation and is aimed at A-level students of biology. Students select, from a menu, to investigate one of a number of identified processes involved in the overall production of a protein, each of which is treated as a self-contained unit. An assessment of how much of the factual information the student has learned is provided in the form of a computer 'adventure game' which is not only challenging but fun to play. Briefly, the student is led into an imaginary laboratory and must choose from shelves those essential items (e.g. reagents, starting materials, techniques) to progress through several stages culminating in the production of genetically engineered bacteria capable of producing a specific protein.     

A geographic distribution database of Mononychellus mites (Acari,Tetranychidae) on cassava (Manihot esculenta)

The genus Mononychellus is represented by 28 herbivorous mites. Some of them are notorious pests of cassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz), a primary food crop in the tropics. With the exception of Mononychellus tanajoa (Bondar), their geographic distribution is not widely known. This article therefore reports observational and specimen-based occurrence data of Mononychellus species associated with cassava. The dataset consists of 1,513 distribution records documented by the International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT) between 1975 and 2012. The specimens are held at CIAT’s Arthropod Reference Collection (CIATARC). Most of the records are from the genus’ native range in South America and were documented between 1980 and 2000. Approximately 61% of the records belong to M. tanajoa, 25% to M. caribbeanae (McGregor), 10% to M. mcgregori (Flechtmann and Baker) and 2% to M. planki (McGregor). The complete dataset is available in Darwin Core Archive format via the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF).     

Are there ethnic groups in South Asia?

The question whether there are ethnic groups in South Asia is relevant to the application of international law, as when states report under the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination. Whether it is important to the advancement of social science is less certain. To classify certain groups as ethnic groups adds little to the explanation of the character of inter-group relations in the region.
