Three lindane (-1,2,3,4,5,6-hexachlorocyclohexane) treated soils were studied under laboratory conditions to determine the interaction between lindane and the soil microorganisms. Microbial populations and respiration were monitored to study insecticide effects. Formation of lindane degradation products and chloride content were examined to determine effects of the microorganisms. Some populations in lindane treated soils showed temporary declines but all ultimately recovered to at least the level of the controls in 16 weeks. Respiration was stimulated over a 9-week period especially in the sandy and clay loams, suggesting the possibility of microbial degradation of the insecticide. Lindane degradation products separated and identified by TLC included -2,3,4,5,6-pentachloro-1-cyclohexene (-PCCH), -3,4,5,6-tetrachloro-1-cyclohexene (-TCCH), -3,4,5,6-tetrachloro-1-cyclohexene (-TCCH), and pentachlorobenzene (PCB). The central focus of this article is to assess the dynamic effects of nuclear and renewable energy consumption on CO2 emissions, for a given level of income and energy consumption. We apply an autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) approach to cointegration to U.S. data from 1960 to 2010. We find that nuclear energy consumption indeed reduces CO2 emissions in both the short- and long-run, while renewable energy consumption does only in the short-run. We also find that income increases CO2 emissions in the long-run after showing the environmental Kuznets curve (EKC) initially in the short-run. Finally, energy consumption is found to have a negative impact on reducing CO2 emissions in the short- and long-run.  相似文献

Body size affects almost every aspect of the biology of a species. According to the ‘resource rule’, decreasing resource availability (e.g. prey density) will lead to a reduction in body size or, alternatively, a decline in mass‐independent energy expenditure. In the present study, we provide a test of this hypothesis, assessing the effect of significantly decreasing prey density on endangered African wild dog (Lycaon pictus) body size and energy expenditure over a 20‐year period. As predicted from the ‘resource rule’, decreasing resource availability resulted in energetic re‐allocation: wild dogs' body size decreased significantly (both shorter and slimmer), whereas our fitness‐related measure of energy expenditure (i.e. litter size) remained constant over time. A phenotypic change of up to 17% within 20 years, as found in the present study, appears to be unprecedented in a nonharvested large mammal, thus advancing the emerging field of eco‐evolutionary dynamics. © 2011 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2012, 105 , 8–12.  相似文献

A meta-cleavage pathway for the aerobic degradation of aromatic hydrocarbons is catalyzed by extradiol dioxygenases via a two-step mechanism: catechol substrate binding and dioxygen incorporation. The binding of substrate triggers the release of water, thereby opening a coordination site for molecular oxygen. The crystal structures of AkbC, a type I extradiol dioxygenase, and the enzyme substrate (3-methylcatechol) complex revealed the substrate binding process of extradiol dioxygenase. AkbC is composed of an N-domain and an active C-domain, which contains iron coordinated by a 2-His-1-carboxylate facial triad motif. The C-domain includes a β-hairpin structure and a C-terminal tail. In substrate-bound AkbC, 3-methylcatechol interacts with the iron via a single hydroxyl group, which represents an intermediate stage in the substrate binding process. Structure-based mutagenesis revealed that the C-terminal tail and β-hairpin form part of the substrate binding pocket that is responsible for substrate specificity by blocking substrate entry. Once a substrate enters the active site, these structural elements also play a role in the correct positioning of the substrate. Based on the results presented here, a putative substrate binding mechanism is proposed.  相似文献

To explore the logic of evolutionary explanations of obesity we modelled food consumption in an animal that minimizes mortality (starvation plus predation) by switching between activities that differ in energy gain and predation. We show that if switching does not incur extra predation risk, the animal should have a single threshold level of reserves above which it performs the safe activity and below which it performs the dangerous activity. The value of the threshold is determined by the environmental conditions, implying that animals should have variable ‘set points’. Selection pressure to prevent energy stores exceeding the optimal level is usually weak, suggesting that immediate rewards might easily overcome the controls against becoming overweight. The risk of starvation can have a strong influence on the strategy even when starvation is extremely uncommon, so the incidence of mortality during famine in human history may be unimportant for explanations for obesity. If there is an extra risk of switching between activities, the animal should have two distinct thresholds: one to initiate weight gain and one to initiate weight loss. Contrary to the dual intervention point model, these thresholds will be inter-dependent, such that altering the predation risk alters the location of both thresholds; a result that undermines the evolutionary basis of the drifty genes hypothesis. Our work implies that understanding the causes of obesity can benefit from a better understanding of how evolution shapes the mechanisms that control body weight.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. Mating pair formation in Paramecium primaurelia was shown to be inhibited by incubating mating-competent mating type (mt) I and mt U cells with Limulus polyphemus agglutinin (LPA) or wheat germ agglutinin (WGA). Preincubation of LPA and WGA with their specific binding-monosaccharides, N-acetylneuraminic acid (NeuAc) and N-acetylglucosamine (GlcNAc), respectively, prevented the lectin effect on pair formation. Addition either of NeuAc or GlcNAc resulted in a reversal of cell pairing inhibition by LPA or WGA, respectively. Both NeuAc and GlcNAc monosaccharides inhibited pair formation when their concentration exceeded a threshold value. The pattern of the relative distribution of NeuAc and GlcNAc molecules on the cell surface was analyzed using fluorescence resonance energy transfer techniques combined with imaging systems. Mt I1 cells showed a high lectin-binding site density localized just on the surface region engaged in conjugation. The pattern of mt I cells, consisting of a quite homogeneous lectin-binding site density spread on the cell surface, was also common to nonmating-competent cells and to immature cells. These findings suggest that in P. primaurelia pair formation involves both NeuAc and GlcNAc residues and that the development of mating-competence is related to a modification in NeuAc and GlcNAc relative distribution on the cell surface of mt 11 cells.  相似文献

The Population Study of Women in Gothenburg, Sweden is an ongoing prospective study of female residents who were recruited from the local registry in 1968–1969 when they were 38–60 years old. The data presented here were collected from 361 healthy women who underwent a baseline physical examination including a supplementary dietary history interview and returned for a second general health examination 6 years later. This report identifies a subgroup of 57 women who were sedentary during their leisure time and appear to have been particularly susceptible to gaining weight as a function of the fat content of their diets. Specifically, longitudinal analysis of body weights in the whole sample revealed a statistical interaction between leisure-time physical activity and habitual dietary fat intake (energy-%), as reported at the baseline examination, in the prediction of subsequent weight change. Further stratified analysis suggested that weight changes were significantly dependent on dietary fat intake among the sedentary women only. High energy intake also predicted weight gain in the sedentary group, although the predictive value for a high-fat diet was of marginal significance after adjusting for total energy consumption. These results suggest that sedentary recreational activity plus a low-fat diet may have a combined contribution to weight change that is not equivalent to the sum of the separate effects. Such a synergy between two modifiable lifestyle factors seems highly relevant for prevention of obesity.  相似文献

Von Hippel and colleagues have highlighted the crucial role of users in innovation in different industries and types of products. They describe the innovation process in terms of the distinct domains of knowledge that producers and users possess. Producers have knowledge about technical solutions and users about their needs, the context of use, and their own capabilities as users. Both sets of knowledge are characterized by "stickiness": They move relatively freely within their own domain but are difficult to transfer outside of it.
In the case of radical innovations for sustainable consumption, the problem of "sticky information" is compounded. Both producers and consumers need to reach out of their conventional competencies and search for new solutions. "Societal actors," such as government bodies or environmental experts, can show the way to such solutions, but this new knowledge needs to be integrated with the "sticky" knowledge about everyday practices in production and consumption.
In the present article we attempt to conceptualize the role and interaction of user and producer knowledge with the knowledge of environmental experts in housing energy innovations. We do so by applying the user−producer interaction framework to a case study on the introduction of low-energy housing concepts in Finland. On the basis of this analysis, we draw conclusions on the potential and limitations of today's practices in the field. For example, we suggest that user involvement can help to enhance the acceptance of low-energy solutions but that the methods for involving users need to be adapted to the particular circumstances in each industry.  相似文献

BackgroundThe threat of cadmium (Cd), which is the cause of itai-itai disease in Japan, is still complicated and confusing, especially for digestive system, such as liver disease. One of the most keys of this problem is demonstrating that the hepatotoxicity is indeed induced by Cd. Therefore, we attempt detecting Cd at microscale during ultrastructural imaging of liver tissue.Methods12 rats were divided randomly into two experimental groups: control and Cd-treated. Treated rats were intraperitoneal injected with 1 mg/kg body weight cadmium chloride (CdCl2) for 4 weeks (5 P.M each day for 6 days/week). At the end of the exposure period, liver tissue samples were processed into ultrathin sections for analysis of advanced analytical transmission electron microscopy and X-ray energy dispersive spectroscopy (TEM/X-EDS) investigations. Ultrastructural images and X-ray energy dispersive spectrum were acquired at microscale.ResultsCd can cause changes in the structure of the organelle, including the collapse of the membrane structure in the cell, the destruction of the internal structure of the organelle, the mitochondrial swelling, the expansion of the endoplasmic reticulum, and the appearance of inclusions. Cadmium bioaccumulation is detected in the mitochondria at microscale by TEM/X-EDS, which is the visual evidence of morphological changes of mitochondria related to Cd.ConclusionThe combination of detailed ultrastructure and microscale X-ray energy dispersive spectroscopy (X-EDS) characterization of cadmium hepatotoxicity demonstrate that cadmium indeed leads to mitochondrial damage, which is helpful for further investigation of the pathological mechanism of cadmium hepatotoxicity.  相似文献
