By assuming the random intensity of selection, the emergence of cooperation on a network is studied. We constructed an evolutionary model in which an individual plays the prisoner's dilemma game, and updates both its strategy and neighbor connections in response to its relative success in the game. The constant (strong or weak) and random intensities of selection are compared. The random intensities of selection are introduced to realize complex environmental effects on the fitness of each individual. Breaking the links on the network is realized according to fixed global parameters. We found that cooperative clusters emerged when cooperators unilaterally broke the link with defectors. The emergent networks under these conditions had a high clustering coefficient and shared some properties with a scale-free network. In addition, after a cooperator with high fitness emerged circumstantially under the random intensity of selection, we observed that the cooperative linkages emerged and spread rapidly through the network. This situation frequently occurred because of the stochastic effect on the fitness of cooperators. Thus, the origin of such phenomena is qualitatively different from the Lotka-Volterra system in which deterministic processes control the system. Cooperative linkages spread more when defectors maintained many links with cooperators.  相似文献

We consider the problem of estimating the intensity functions for a continuous time 'illness-death' model with intermittently observed data. In such a case, it may happen that a subject becomes diseased between two visits and dies without being observed. Consequently, there is an uncertainty about the precise number of transitions. Estimating the intensity of transition from health to illness by survival analysis (treating death as censoring) is biased downwards. Furthermore, the dates of transitions between states are not known exactly. We propose to estimate the intensity functions by maximizing a penalized likelihood. The method yields smooth estimates without parametric assumptions. This is illustrated using data from a large cohort study on cerebral ageing. The age-specific incidence of dementia is estimated using an illness-death approach and a survival approach.  相似文献

1.  To determine reliability of stimulus intensity coding we measured the response variability of 30 hydroxy-L-proline sensitive chemoreceptor cells from antennules of Homarus americanus. First, cells were tested with 5 repeated presentations of 10-5 M and l0-4 M hydroxy-L-proline. Then a stimulus response function was determined in each cell from l0-6to 5 × l0-4 M in half log steps.
2.  Population mean responses to repetitive stimulation showed little variability and mean stimulus response functions increased monotonically. In contrast, most individual cells showed a high response variability and no single cell stimulus-response function increased monotonically. The greatest response variability occurred between different cells.
3.  Mean response magnitude of a 30 cell population allowed reliable discrimination between 10-5 M and l0-4 M hydroxy-L-proline for each of the 5 repetitions. It also allowed discrimination of all concentrations of hydroxy-L-proline tested. Across-fiber response patterns also differed significantly with concentration while they remained relatively stable with repetition of the same stimulus.
4.  We applied different analytical methods to test the reliability of response magnitude and across-fiber pattern as possible codes for intensity discrimination. We demonstrated that a random population of rather unreliable receptor cells could provide remarkably reliable intensity information to the CNS based on response magnitude or across-fiber pattern.

Summary Shell patterns and colors and the genetic complexity of the polymorphism of the marine snail,Thais lamellosa, are similar to those of several terrestrial pulmonates. Frequent parallel evolution of such complex polymorphisms must reflect a substantial selective advantage. To form a hypothesis to account for pattern evolution, morph compositions of several populations were quantified and compared with environmental qualities. All three primary colors were found at only two of five sites. Shells with many banding patterns were found; however, the most common pattern of one site was rare or absent at most other sites. Snails were fed monotonous diets of barnacles or mussels for 7 months to evaluate the importance of diet. Colors deposited in most shells were diluted progressively during the period and, like siblings in the field, most snails had white shells at the end of the experiment. No morph characteristics could be attributed to diet. Patterns are usually prominent only on juveniles, and may be obscured for much of the juvenile period, so the colors and patterns distinguish snails from each other for only a short portion of their lives. Morph differences from site to site are correlated with environmental differences. Environmental qualities could affect densities of the principal predator,Cancer productus, and thus predation intensity, or could affect the relative visible qualities of the morphs.  相似文献

Parasite populations are highly fragmented in space and time, and consist of aggregates of genetically similar individuals sharing the same host. To avoid inbreeding, theory predicts that female-biased sex ratios should be strongly favoured when either or both prevalence and intensity of infection are low. Other models indicate that if sex ratios are selected to increase the probability of mating, they should be less biased at a high intensity of infection in polygamous parasites, since at high intensities all females are mated. To test these predictions, the relationship between sex ratio and both the prevalence and intensity of infection was examined in comparative studies across 193 populations of nematode and acanthocephalan parasites. Sex ratios in these two dioecious, polygamous taxa are usually female biased. Among natural populations, no significant relationship was observed once the confounding effects of phylogeny had been removed. However, among experimental populations of nematodes, a negative relationship was found between intensity of infection and sex ratio, even after controlling for phylogeny. In other words, at high intensities, populations of nematodes are less female biased. This result must be treated with caution because of the unusually high numbers of worms per host in experimental infections. Nevertheless, combined with information on the proximate mechanisms regulating sex ratios in these parasites, it suggests a link between the characteristics of parasite populations and their sex ratio. ObjectivesImage segmentation plays an important role in the analysis and understanding of the cellular process. However, this task becomes difficult when there is intensity inhomogeneity between regions, and it is more challenging in the presence of the noise and clustered cells. The goal of the paper is propose an image segmentation framework that tackles the above cited problems.Material and methodsA new method composed of two steps is proposed: First, segment the image using B-spline level set with Region-Scalable Fitting (RSF) active contour model, second apply the Watershed algorithm based on new object markers to refine the segmentation and separate clustered cells. The major contributions of the paper are: 1) Use of a continuous formulation of the level set in the B-spline basis, 2) Develop the energy function and its derivative by introducing the RSF model to deal with intensity inhomogeneity, 3) For the Watershed, propose a relevant choice of markers that considers the cell properties.ResultsExperimental results are performed on widely used synthetic images, in addition to simulated and real biological images, without and with additive noise. They attest the high quality of segmentation of the proposed method in terms of quantitative and qualitative evaluation.ConclusionThe proposed method is able to tackle many difficulties at the same time: overlapped intensities, noise, different cell sizes and clustered cells. It provides an efficient tool for image segmentation especially biological ones.  相似文献

PurposeThe entrance beam fluence of therapeutic proton scanning beams can be monitored using a gantry-attachable plastic scintillating plate (GAPSP). This study evaluated the clinical application of the GAPSP using a method that measures intensity modulated proton therapy (IMPT) beams for patient treatment.MethodsIMPT beams for the treatment of nine patients, at sites that included the spine, head and neck, pelvis, and lung, were measured using the GAPSP, composed of an EJ-212 plastic scintillator and a CMOS camera. All energy layers distinguished by the GAPSP were accumulated to determine the dose distribution of the treatment field. The evaluated fields were compared with reference dose maps verified by quality assurance.ResultsComparison of dose distributions of evaluation treatment fields with reference dose distributions showed that the 3%/1 mm average gamma passing rate was 96.4%, independent of the treatment site, energy range and field size. When dose distributions were evaluated using the same criteria for each energy layer, the average gamma passing rate was 91.7%.ConclusionsThe GAPSP is a suitable, low-cost method for monitoring pencil beam scanning proton therapy, especially for non-spot scanning or additional collimation. The GAPSP can also estimate the treatment beam by the energy layer, a feature not common to other proton dosimetry tools.  相似文献

目的:观察调强适形放疗(intensity modulated radiation therapy,IMRT)联合多西他赛、奈达铂方案化疗同步治疗局部晚期食管癌的疗效及安全性。方法:选择66例局部晚期食管癌患者为研究对象,将其随机分为2组,其中常规放疗组(A组)共30例,采用常规照射方法,6/8 MV高能X线,2.0 Gy/次,5次/周;40 Gy/20次后再次定位剂量达60~66 Gy,强调放疗组(B组)共36例,采用强调适应性放疗,6/8MV-X射线照射,以95%等剂量线包绕PTV(计划靶区),处方剂量GTV(肿瘤区)66 Gy/30次,CTV(临床靶区)60 Gy/30次,PTV 60 Gy/30次,每天1次,每周5次。强调放疗组同期接受IMRT和多西他赛、柰达伯化疗,21天1个周期,连续2个周期。治疗结束后根据实体瘤疗效评价标准(RECIST)评定临床疗效;参照WHO毒性反应分度标准评价毒副反应。结果:常规放疗组和强调放疗组的总有效率分别为46.66%和91.67%(x2=17.26,P0.05);常规放疗组的毒副反应发生率显著高于强调放疗组,包括骨髓抑制、放射性食管炎和消化道反应的发生率存在显著差异(P0.05)。结论:调强适形放疗联合多西他赛、奈达铂化疗同步治疗局部晚期食管癌疗效较好,毒副反应可耐受,具有潜在的推广应用价值,值得临床进一步研究。  相似文献

Intra-uterine manipulation of mammalian foetuses for experimental purposes was first described at the beginning of this century (Wolff, 1919). Though numerous publications have appeared since which bear witness to the feasibility of intra-uterine manipulation, its application has remained rather restricted. In this paper we describe a technique for the trans-uterine injection of neuronal tracers into rat foetuses. Uterine wall and foetal membranes are pierced only with a micro pipette, and are thus left virtually intact, preventing loss of amniotic fluid. Surgical mortality is 24% overall, but the experimental success rate is much lower (23%). Even so these results are comparable to more complicated procedures, because the technique is simple (i.e. requires no micro surgical skill), and because up to 6 foetuses can be injected per dam. Technical problems, such as foetal anaesthesia and the detection of false-negative results due to imponderable factors are discussed.  相似文献
