Copper absorption was measured at two levels of dietary zinc in six healthy young men who were confined to a metabolic unit
for a 75 d study of zinc utilization. A diet of conventional foods was fed, providing either 16.5 or 5.5 mg zinc and 1.3 mg
copper daily. Copper absorption was determined by feeding65Cu, a stable isotope of copper, once during the 16.5 mg Zn diet and near the beginning and end of the 5.5 mg Zn diet. Apparent
copper absorption averaged 48.1% when the 16.5 mg Zn diet was fed. This was significantly higher than the averages of 37.2
and 38.5% when the 5.5 mg Zn diet was fed. Absorption also differed significantly among subjects. Fecal copper did not differ
between diets or among subjects. All subjects were in positive copper balance at both levels of dietary zinc. These results
suggest that a dietary zinc intake slightly above the Recommended Dietary Allowance of 15 mg/d does not increase fecal copper

A model is proposed for the effect of gramicidin A on the order and structure of phospholipid dispersions. According to this model, the addition of gramicidin A influences the surrounding lipids via two independent mechanisms. The first arises from a drop in surface pressure for those lipids substantially bounded by gramicidin A. The second mechanism arises from the increase in the phospholipid headgroup spacing due to the small polar region of the polypeptide. The model provides an explanation for the currently available NMR, X-ray diffraction and Langmuir monolayer results. The model also suggests mechanisms for the ability of gramicidin A to trigger a transition of the lipid from the lamellar to hexagonal II phase, the dependence of this transition on the lipid chain length and the formation of a lamellar phase with lysophosphatidylcholine.Abbreviations NMR

Native Molecular Forms of Head Acetylcholinesterase from Adult Drosophila melanogaster: Quaternary Structure and Hydrophobic Character 总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
The native molecular forms of acetylcholinesterase (AChE) present in adult Drosophila heads were characterized by sedimentation analysis in sucrose gradients and by nondenaturing electrophoresis. The hydrophobic properties of AChE forms were studied by comparing their migration in the presence of Triton X100, 10-oleyl ether, or sodium deoxycholate, or in the absence of detergent. We examined the polymeric structure of AChE forms by disulfide bridge reduction. We found that the major native molecular form is an amphiphilic dimer which is converted into hydrophilic dimer and monomer on autolysis of the extracts, or into a catalytically active amphiphilic monomer by partial reduction. The latter component exists only as trace amounts in the native enzyme. Two additional minor native forms were identified as hydrophilic dimer and monomer. Although a significant proportion of AChE was only solubilized in high salt, following extractions in low salt, this high salt-soluble fraction contained the same molecular forms as the low salt-soluble fractions: thus, we did not detect any molecular form resembling the asymmetric forms of vertebrate cholinesterases. 相似文献

Summary An associational plant refuge occurs when a plant that is susceptible to herbivory gains protection from herbivory when it is associated with another plant. In coastal North Carolina, the abundance of the palatable red alga Gracilaria tikvahiae is positively correlated with the abundance of the unpalatable brown alga Sargassum filipendula during times of increased herbivore activity. To see if grazing by the sea urchin Arbacia punctulata could generate this pattern, controlled experiments were conducted in out-door microcosms and in the laboratory. Gracilaria beneath a canopy of Sargassum was eaten significantly less than Gracilaria alone. When Arbacia were excluded, Gracilaria alone grew significantly more than Gracilaria beneath Sargassum, demonstrating that Sargassum is a competitor of Gracilaria. Experiments investigating Sargassum's deterrent role indicated that Sargassum decreased the foraging range of Arbacia and the rate at which it fed on Gracilaria. Additional experiments with plastic Sargassum mimics indicated that the decreased grazing on Gracilaria was not a result of Sargassum morphology, but was probably attributable to some chemical characteristic of Sargassum. The pattern of increased grazing in monocultures (only Gracilaria present) versus polycultures (both Gracilaria and Sargassum present) demonstrated in this study also has been demonstrated for plant-insect interactions in terrestrial communities. In these communities, insect density is higher in monocultures than in polycultures because insects find and immigrate to monocultures more rapidly, and once in a monoculture, they emigrate from them less often than from polycultures. In this study, urchins did not find and immigrate to monocultures more rapidly, nor did they tend to stay in them once they were found; in fact, they emigrated from monocultures of Gracilaria more rapidly than from Gracilaria and Sargassum polycultures. Increased grazing in Gracilaria monocultures resulted from increased rates of movement and feeding of individual herbivores, not from increased herbivore density as has been reported for terrestrial systems. 相似文献

Kallar grass is a highly salt-tolerant grass grown as a pioneer plant on alkaline, salt-affected soils in Pakistan. Nitrogen-fixing bacteria and kallar grass were found to be in close association, which was even root-zone specific: rhizoplane and endorhizosphere were colonized by two different populations. Among theAzospirillum isolates originating from the root surface, some were of a new species, now namedA. halopraeferens. To study plant-bacterium interactions, this natural kallar grass association was chosen. The possible role of bacterial chemotaxis and oxygen tolerance are discussed. 相似文献

Most of the exploited fish stocks in the North Sea are also used as a food supply by a number of seal species; the same is true for some fish and invertebrate stocks in the Antarctic—although the fisheries there are, at present, much smaller than those in the North Sea. The information needed for a critical assessment of such interactions is reviewed. Using existing techniques it is possible to estimate the quantity and size-classes of each fish or invertebrate species consumed by seals and to compare this with the commercial catch. If fishing mortality is known, these estimates can be used to calculate the level of mortality imposed by the seals. However, a realistic evaluation requires information on the distribution and movements of the fish, the seals' feeding effort, and the fisheries effort in time and space. At present it is difficult or impossible to obtain this information, but recent technological developments in telemetry equipment will soon make it feasible. To assess the economic effects of changes in seal numbers on the fishery, or the ecological effects of changes in fisheries effort on seal populations, requires additional information on the responses of the fishery and the seals to changes in fish abundance, and of the commercial market to changes in the supply of fish. 相似文献

Neurotransmitter receptors and ion channels play a critical role in the transduction of signals at chemical synapses. The modulation of neurotransmitter receptor and ion channel function by protein phosphorylation is one of the major regulatory mechanisms in the control of synaptic transmission. The nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (nAcChR) has provided an excellent model system in which to study the modulation of neurotransmitter receptors and ion channels by protein phosphorylation since the structure and function of this receptor have been so extensively characterized. In this article, the structure of the nAcChR from the electric organ of electric fish, skeletal muscle, and the central and peripheral nervous system will be briefly reviewed. Emphasis will be placed on the regulation of the phosphorylation of nAcChR by second messengers and by neurotransmitters and hormones. The lectin from stinging nettle rhizomes, Urtica dioica agglutinin (UDA), did not affect the evolution of wet and dry weight, protein, nucleic acid, ATP, cAMP and glycerol content during early germination of Phycomyces blakesleeanus spores. However, earlier investigations established a strongly reduced mycelial growth of several phytopathogenic fungi by this small plant lectin. Total uptake and incorporation of radioactive precursors showed no differences between UDA or control hyphae, but UDA significantly altered the distribution patterns of [14C]-glucose incorporated into the walls of Phycomyces blakesleeanus (more label was recovered in the chitin fraction). Moreover, a small but significant stimulation of chitin synthase and a similar inhibition of chitin deacetylase was found in cell wall preparations. These observations could lead to a better understanding of plant-pathogen interrelationships and to a further elucidation of cell wall structure in fungi.Abbreviations GlcNAc

Some species of the paleotropical tree genus Macaranga (Euphorbiaceae) live in close association with ants. The genus comprises the full range of species from those not regularly inhabited by ants to obligate myrmecophytes. In Malaysia (Peninsular and Borneo) 23 of the 52 species are known to be ant-associated (44%). The simplest structural adaptation of plants to attract ants are extrafloral nectaries. We studied the distribution of extrafloral nectaries in the genus Macaranga to assess the significance of this character as a possible predisposition for the evolution of obligate myrmecophytism. All species have marginal glands on the leaves. However, only the glands of non- myrmecophytic species function as nectaries, whereas liquids secreted by these glands in myrmecophytic species did not contain sugar. Some non-myrmecophytic Macaranga and transitional Macaranga species in addition have extrafloral nectaries on the leaf blade near the petiole insertion. All obligatorily myrmecophytic Macaranga species, however, lack additional glands on the lamina. The non-myrmecophytic species are visited by a variety of different ant species, whereas myrmecophytic Macaranga are associated only with one specific ant-partner. Since these ants keep scale insects in the hollow stems, reduction of nectary production in ant-inhabited Macaranga seems to be biologically significant. We interpret this as a means of (a) saving the assimilates and (b) stabilization of maintenance of the association's specificity. Competition with other ant species for food rewards is avoided and thereby danger of weakening the protective function of the obligate ant- partner for the plant is reduced. A comparison with other euphorb species living in the same habitats as Macaranga showed that in genera in which extrafloral nectaries are widespread, no myrmecophytes have evolved. Possession of extrafloral nectaries does not appear to be essential for the development of symbiotic ant-plant interactions. Summary The spatial overlap of woody plant root systems and that of annual or perennial grasses promotes competition for soil-derived
resources. In this study we examined competition for soil nitrogen between blue oak seedlings and either the annual grassBromus mollis or the perennial grassStipa pulchra under controlled outdoor conditions. Short-term nitrogen competition was quantified by injecting15N at 30 cm depth in a plane horizontal to oak seedling roots and that of their neighbors, and calculating15N uptake rates, pool sizes and15N allocation patterns 24 h after labelling. Simultaneously, integrative nitrogen competition was quantified by examining total
nitrogen capture, total nitrogen pools and total nitrogen allocation.Stipa neighbors reduced inorganic soil nitrogen content to a greater extent than didBromus plants. Blue oak seedlings responded to lower soil nitrogen content by allocating lower amounts of nitrogen per unit of biomass
producing higher root length densities and reducing the nitrogen content of root tissue. In addition, blue oak seedlings growing
with the perennial grass exhibited greater rates of15N uptake, on a root mass basis, compensating for higher soil nitrogen competition inStipa neighborhoods. Our findings suggest that while oak seedlings have lower rates of nitrogen capture than herbaceous neighbors,
oak seedlings exhibit significant changes in nitrogen allocation and nitrogen uptake rates which may offset the competitive
