Synthesis and secretion of bactericidal protein (cecropin) and lysozyme were induced by soluble peptidoglycan fragments (SPG) from Escherichia coli in a culture of fat body from Bombyx mori larvae. The rate of the secretion by fat body increased as a function of SPG concentration added to the culture medium. The induction of bactericidal activity was specific for peptidoglycan of a particular structure. Thus, SPG from Micrococcus luteus was 500-times less potent than E. coli SPG, and various glucans and peptides structurally related to peptidoglycan were all ineffective as elicitor. These results support the hypothesis that bacteria invading the haemocoel have to be partially degraded to generate peptidoglycan fragments as a signal molecule, which subsequently acts on a receptor on fat body cells and induces antibacterial protein synthesis. 相似文献
The coupling mechanism between the bilaterally paired optic lobe circadian pacemakers in the cricket Gryllus bimaculatus was investigated by recording locomotor activity, under constant light or constant red light, after the optic nerve was unilaterally severed.
1.
The majority (about 70%) of the animals showed a locomotor rhythm with 2 rhythmic components; one freerunning with a period of 25.33 ± 0.41 (SD) h and the other with 24.36 ± 0.37 (SD) h under constant light (Fig. 3A).
2.
Removal of the intact side optic lobe abolished the longer period component (Fig. 4A), while the operation on the operated side caused a reverse effect (Fig. 4B), indicating that the longer and the shorter period components are driven by the pacemaker on the intact and the operated side, respectively.
3.
The activity driven by a pacemaker was inhibited during the subjective day of the contralateral pacemaker (circadian time 0–10, Fig. 5).
4.
The freerunning periods of the two components were not constant but varied as a function of the mutual phase angle relationship (Figs. 3A, 7, 8).
These results suggest that the 2 optic lobe pacemakers weakly couple to one another and that the cricket maintains a stable temporal structure in its behavior through the phase-dependent mututal inhibition of activity and the phase-dependent freerunning period modulation. 相似文献
Summary The ultrastructural organization of ommatidial components of the retina of the moth, Galleria mellonella are described from electron microscopic observations. Each ommatidium is composed of 12 common retinula cells and one basal eccentric cell. The retinula cells are connected together by a desmosomal strip along their length. The rhabdom occupies the basal thirty percent of the ommatidium and can be divided into nine segments of parallel microvilli. Several cells may contribute to an individual rhabdomere. The rhabdomeres are arranged in a cross with single cell rhabdomeres lying between the arms of the cross. Thin sections of ommatidium absorb polarized light differentially. The total amount of plane polarized light absorbed varies with angle of rotation for an entire ommatidium but there are also differences between the amount of absorption of adjacent rhabdomeric segments. Galleria appears to be the only lepidopteran in which the possibility of the polarized light reception has been reported. 相似文献
The distribution of cholecystokinin-like immunoreactivity was studied in the central nervous system of the heteropteran insect Triatoma infestans using high-sensitivity immunocytochemistry. In the protocerebrum, CCK-IR somata were observed in the anteromedial, anterolateral and posterior cell-body layers. The neuropils displayed different densities of immunoreactive neurites. Few immunoreactive somata were found in the optic lobe in both the medial and lateral soma rinds, as well as in the proximal optic lobe. Immunoreactive fibers were present in the medulla and lobula neuropils. The sensory deutocerebrum contained a higher number of immunopositive perikarya than the antennal mechanosensory and motor center. The antennal lobe glomeruli displayed a moderate density of immunoreactive fibers. With regard to the subesophageal ganglion, numerous CCK-IR somata were found close to the root of the mandibular nerve; others were present in the soma rind of the remaining neuromeres. CCK-IR perikarya were present in both thoracic ganglia, with the abdominal neuromeres containing the highest number of positive somata. The neuropils of both ganglia showed moderate densities of immunopositive processes. The distribution of CCK-LI in somata and neuropils of central nervous system of T. infestans is widespread suggesting that a CCK-like peptide may act mainly as a neuromodulator in the integration of information from distinct sensory receptors. 相似文献
Summary The incidence of virus infections in three lepidopterous insect species was studied from 1965 to 1968 in alfalfa fields in
California. The insects were the alfalfa caterpillar,Colias eurytheme; the beet armyworm,Spodoptera exigua; and the alfalfa looper,Autographa californica. InC. eurytheme, the major virus was a nuclear polyhedrosis virus (NPV); inS. exigua, a granulosis virus (GV) and an NPV; inA. californica, a GV. Virus epizootics did not develop in very high densities ofC. eurytheme. Virus epizootics occurred in low host densities of the three insect species, especially in populations ofA. californica. The virus acted as a density-dependent factor in the regulation of the populations ofS. exigua andA. californica. Temperature, humidity and rainfall had no marked effect on the incidence of virus infections. 相似文献
Insect Barcode Information System called as Insect Barcode Informática (IBIn) is an online database resource developed by the
National Bureau of Agriculturally Important Insects, Bangalore. This database provides acquisition, storage, analysis and
publication of DNA barcode records of agriculturally important insects, for researchers specifically in India and other countries. It
bridges a gap in bioinformatics by integrating molecular, morphological and distribution details of agriculturally important insects.
IBIn was developed using PHP/My SQL by using relational database management concept. This database is based on the client–
server architecture, where many clients can access data simultaneously. IBIn is freely available on-line and is user-friendly. IBIn
allows the registered users to input new information, search and view information related to DNA barcode of agriculturally
important insects. This paper provides a current status of insect barcode in India and brief introduction about the database IBIn.
1. 1.|Cold acclimation apparently favours an increase of water content in fat body, but not in coxal muscle, of cockroaches.
2. 2.|A remarkable enhancement in the accumulation of total protein in fat body characterizes the cold acclimation of cockroaches, particularly adult males (175% increase in protein/DNA ratio). The increase in protein content of coxal muscle during acclimination to 15°C, observed in nymphs (16%) and males (16%) but not in females, is less pronounced than that of fat body.
3. 3.|A diminution (28–32%) in the free amino acid/DNA ratio due to cold acclimation has been recorded in both coxal muscle and fat body of nymphs and females, but not in males.
4. 4.|No qualitative change occurs in the free amino acid spectrum of haemolymph and tissues of this insect during acclimation to 15 and 35°C.
5. 5.|An augmentation (15–30%) of the RNA/DNA ratio occurs in fat body and coxal muscle of nymphs and males but in fat body alone of females following cold acclimation.
6. 6.|The glycogen reserve has been shown to increase by up to 30% in fat body and coxal muscle of cold acclimated cockroaches compared to warm acclimated ones.

The idea that oxidative stress could be a major force governing evolutionary trade‐offs has recently been challenged by experimental approaches in laboratory conditions, triggering extensive debates centered on theoretical and methodological issues. Here, we revisited the link between oxidative stress and reproduction by measuring multiple antioxidant and oxidative damages in wild‐caught females of two sibling weevil species (Curculio elephas, C. glandium). The strength of our study arised from (1) studied species that were sympatric and exploited similar resource, but displayed contrasting reproductive strategies and (2) individuals were sampled throughout adult life so as to relate oxidative status to breeding effort. We found that the short‐lived C. elephas sacrifices red‐ox homeostasis for immediate reproduction upon emergence as characterized by low antioxidant defenses and elevated oxidative damage. Comparatively, C. glandium massively invests in antioxidant and maintains low oxidative damage, which may contribute to their extended prereproductive period. Intriguingly, we also reveal, for the first time in a field study, an unexpected reactivation of antioxidant defenses with the onset of reproduction. Our results thus support the existence of a strong, but complex relationship between oxidative stress and life‐history evolution and highlight the need for a finer‐scale picture of antioxidant strategies. 相似文献
The genetic manipulation of agriculturally important insects now allows the development of genetic sexing and male sterility systems for more highly efficient biologically‐based population control programs, most notably the Sterile Insect Technique (SIT), for both plant and animal insect pests. Tetracycline‐suppressible (Tet‐off) conditional lethal systems may function together so that transgenic strains will be viable and fertile on a tetracycline‐containing diet, but female‐lethal and male sterile in tetracycline‐free conditions. This would allow their most efficacious use in a unified system for sterile male‐only production for SIT. A critical consideration for the field release of such transgenic insect strains, however, is a determination of the frequency and genetic basis of lethality revertant survival. This will provide knowledge essential to evaluating the genetic stability of the lethality system, its environmental safety, and provide the basis for modifications ensuring optimal efficacy. For Tet‐off lethal survival determinations, development of large‐scale screening protocols should also allow the testing of these modifications, and test the ability of other conditional lethal systems to fully suppress propagation of rare Tet‐off survivors. If a dominant temperature sensitive (DTS) pupal lethality system proves efficient for secondary lethality in Drosophila, it may provide the safeguard needed to support the release of sexing/sterility strains, and potentially, the release of unisex lethality strains as a form of genetic male sterility. Should the DTS Prosβ21 mutation prove effective for redundant lethality, its high level of structural and functional conservation should allow host‐specific cognates to be created for a wide range of insect species. 相似文献
