Data on the response of bird communities to surface mining and habitat modification are limited, with virtually no data examining the effects of mining on bird communities in and along riparian forest corridors. Bird community composition was examined using line transects from 1994 to 2000 at eight sites within and along a riparian forest corridor in southwestern Indiana that was impacted by an adjacent surface mining operation. Three habitats were sampled: closed canopy, riparian forest with no open water; fragmented canopy, riparian forest with flood plain oxbows; and reclaimed mined land with constructed ponds. Despite shifts in species composition, overall bird species richness, measured as the mean number of bird species recorded/transect route, did not differ among habitats and remained unchanged across years. More species were recorded solely on mined land than in either closed forest or forested oxbow habitats. Mined land provided stopover habitat for shorebirds and waterfowl not recorded in other habitats, and supported an assemblage of grassland-associated bird species weakly represented in the area prior to mining. A variety of wood warblers and other migrants were recorded in the forest corridor throughout the survey period, suggesting that, although surface mining reduced the width of the forest corridor, the corridor was still important habitat for movement of forest-dependent birds and non-resident bird species in migration. We suggest that surface mining and reclamation practices can be implemented near riparian forest and still provide for a diverse assemblage of bird species. These data indicate that even narrow (0.4 km wide) riparian corridors are potentially valuable in a landscape context as stopover habitats and routes of dispersal and movement of forest-dependent and migratory bird species.  相似文献

[目的]调查鸡源沙门氏菌对氯霉素类药物的耐药特征和相关耐药基因的流行情况.[方法]从山东省部分地区鸡孵化场、养殖场、屠宰场分离样品进行沙门氏菌鉴定和药物敏感性试验;设计引物,对氯霉素类药物的耐药基因进行PCR扩增和序列分析.[结果]试验分离到印第安纳沙门氏菌,分离率为23.28%.孵化场、养殖场、屠宰场印第安纳沙门氏菌对氯霉素耐药率分别为50.00%、83.33%和93.30%,对氟苯尼考耐药率为83.33%、100%和100%,对甲砜霉素耐药率为63%、65%和77%.在80株氯霉素类耐药菌株中,54株检测到catA1基因,74株检测到floR基因,5株检测到cmlA基因.[结论]不同来源印第安纳沙门氏菌对氯霉素类药物耐药率存在差异,catA1和floR基因广泛存在于耐药菌株中.  相似文献

Nucleotide pyrophosphatase from yeast was inhibited by thiols, o-phenanthroline, 8-hydroxyquinoline, EDTA, and 8-hydroxyquinoline-5-sulfonic acid. The inhibition by chelating agents was time and concentration dependent. Inhibition by EDTA was decreased by complexing the EDTA with metal ions before addition to the enzyme. The effectiveness of the metal ions in preventing inhibition by EDTA paralleled the stability constants of the EDTA-metal complexes. Partial recovery of EDTA-inhibited enzyme activity was achieved with Zn2+, Co2+, Fe2+, and Mn2+. Analyses for zinc in the purified enzyme by atomic absorption spectroscopy and by titration with 8-hydroxyquinoline-5-sulfonic acid revealed the presence of approximately 1 g atom/mol of enzyme (Mr 65,000). The data indicate that yeast nucleotide pyrophosphatase is a metalloenzyme in which the zinc plays some role in activity.  相似文献

The food call of broody domestic hens was used to measure maternal response to four frequency components found in chick distress calls (2,3,4 and 5 kHz) and to variations in distress call intensity (0—86 dB). Foodcalling increased significantly with frequency of the pure-tone test pulse; response to a taped distress call occurred between 40 dB and 86 dB intensity with a maximum at 60–65 dB. The results suggest that the mother uses the higher frequency components in recognizing the distress call, but responds maximally within a specific intensity range. Abstract. The history of a rapidly changing mosaic of prairie and oak savanna in northern Indiana was reconstructed using several methods emphasizing different time scales ranging from annual to millennial. Vegetation change was monitored for 8 yr using plots and for 30 yr using aerial photographs. A 20th century fire history was reconstructed from the stand structure of multiple-stemmed trees and fire scars. General Land Office Survey data were used to reconstruct the forest of A.D. 1834. Fossil pollen and charcoal records were used to reconstruct the last 4000 yr of vegetation and fire history. Since its deposition along the shore of Lake Michigan about 4000 yr ago, the area has followed a classical primary dune successional sequence, gradually changing from pine forest to prairie/oak savanna between A.D. 264 and 1007. This successional trend, predicted in the models of Henry Cowles, occurred even though the climate cooled and prairies elsewhere in the region retreated. Severe fires in the 19th century reduced most tree species but led to a temporary increase in Populus tremuloides. During the last few decades, the prairie has been invaded by oaks and other woody species, primarily because of fire suppression since A.D. 1972. The rapid and complex changes now occurring are a response to the compounded effects of plant succession, intense burning and logging in the 19th century, recent fire suppression, and possibly increased airborne deposition of nitrates. The compilation of several historical research techniques emphasizing different time scales allows this study of the interactions between multiple disturbance variables.  相似文献

Antigenic analysis of adult female-specific blood and yolk proteins in Oncopeltus demonstrated an incomplete vitellogenin (A), which appears in the blood prior to yolk deposition and is later modified or joined by an antigenically complete molecule (AB). Vitellogenin AB is antigenically indistinguishable from the major yolk protein of mature eggs, though the electrophoretic mobilities of the two differ in 6% acrylamide gels. Vitellogenin A alone appears in the blood of adult females in which the corpora allata are known to be inactive, i.e., during starvation or photoperiodically induced diapause. Stimulation of these females with a juvenile hormone analog restores yolk deposition, and also induces the appearance of AB in the blood. While juvenile hormone is needed for the termination of diapause and the maturation of vitellogenin in this species, diapause begins with the vitellogenin-producing mechanism already partially assembled.  相似文献

ABSTRACT The size and distribution of measurement errors associated with major techniques for estimating numbers of hibernating bats are unstudied, although this is the principle method of enumerating several endangered bat species. However, decisions concerning the listing status of a species under the Endangered Species Act require consistent and accurate estimation of population size and trends. Recent advances in digital photography have improved the ability to produce a quantitative record of the numbers of bats in hibernacula. We surveyed clusters of Indiana bats in a hibernaculum and compared results from counts of digital photographs of clusters to results from 4 variations of visual estimation. We counted bats in photographs using Geographic Information System digitization over the photograph. Total counts from 2 sets of photographs varied by <1.5%. Nonphotographic estimation techniques varied from 76% to 142% of counts from photographs for clusters for which estimation (rather than counting) was used. Where feasible, photography can improve status and trend information for species of concern, permitting more timely and specific management actions.  相似文献

Cellulose-bound DNA complementary to ovalbumin mRNA was used in a continuous hybridization system to isolate single-stranded DNA molecules containing the ovalbumin gene. Fragmented DNA segments containing the ovalbumin gene were enriched 300–350 fold in one cycle of purification. Two cycles of purification resulted in a DNA fraction which was enriched 2300 fold in the ovalbumin sequence. The method is suitable for purification of the ovalbumin sequence from both sheared DNA fragments, as well as larger molecular weight DNA containing more than twice the number of nucleotides necessary to code for ovalbumin mRNA. The chromatographic procedures were specific and reproducible. In addition, the recovery of ovalbumin DNA was essentially quantitative (80–100%), even when large amounts of starting DNA (70–75 mg) were used. This purification scheme should also be useful for the enrichment of other unique sequence genes from eucaryotic DNA.  相似文献
