Abstract

A factorial experiment was conducted in order to test whether the ranking of competitive ability at seedling stage is affected by different resource availability and competition asymmetry levels. Seedlings of three Mediterranean species (Rhamnus alaternus, Ampelodesmos mauritanicus and Cistus incanus) were grown at two competition intensities with different water and nutrient levels. Plants responses were expressed as mortality, biomass production and plant architecture. Data were also analysed by an index of competitive response intensity. A clear ranking of competitive response was observed, with Rhamnus > Ampelodesmos > Cistus. Competition was affected both by water and nutrient availability, but none of these factors modified competitive ranking. Seedling competition behaviour appeared to be related to species successional roles.  相似文献

Abstract

Melophagus ovinus (the sheep ked), Damalinia ovis (the sheep biting louse), and, for the first time, Chorioptes bovis (the scrotal mange mite) were found on Campbell Island on feral sheep that had never been shorn or dipped. M. ovinus was present on all animals; infestation levels were independent of the age or sex of the host. More ewes than rams were infested with D. ovis, although 4-tooth and younger rams were more frequently infested than older rams. Louse numbers were higher on older ewes (6-tooth and older) than on younger ewes, but on rams were independent of the age of the host. No other ectoparasites were found.  相似文献

Abstract

Sooty shearwater (Puffinus griesus, titi) abundance, harvest levels and chick mass were monitored repeatedly on Putauhinu Island, south‐west of Rakiura (Stewart Island) between 1997 and 2005. Putauhinu is the second largest of the Titi Islands and has a relatively high density of chicks distributed over most of the island, so it supports what is likely the second‐largest population of sooty shearwaters in the Rakiura region (after Taukihepa, Big South Cape Island). Rakiura Maori harvested chicks from five “manu” (family birding areas) that covered 56% of the 128.4 ha of breeding colony of the island. Chick density was lower on the unharvested area in the interior of the island than on harvested areas. Burrow entrance density was higher where there was more ground cover (mainly fern) vegetation, but these areas had lower burrow occupancy, so overall chick density was similar at different levels of ground cover. Twenty‐six harvesters present on Putauhinu in 2005 took 31 280 chicks in total, equivalent to 8.4% (95% CI = 6.6–12%) of the available chicks on the entire island. Seasonal variation in total chicks harvested (CV 15–22%) was not related to chick abundance or mass. Refuges, including impenetrable patches of vegetated ground within manu, the unharvested centre of the island, and even nearby unharvested islands, will ameliorate localised impacts of harvest if density‐dependent immigration is operating.  相似文献

The alga Parachlorella kessleri, strain CCALA 255, grown under optimal conditions, is characterized by storage of energy in the form of starch rather than lipids. If grown in the complete medium, the cultures grew rapidly, producing large amounts of biomass in a relatively short time. The cells, however, contained negligible lipid reserves (1–10% of DW). Treatments inducing hyperproduction of storage lipids in P. kessleri biomass were described. The cultures were grown in the absence or fivefold decreased concentration of either nitrogen or phosphorus or sulfur. Limitation by all elements using fivefold or 10‐fold diluted mineral medium was also tested. Limitation with any macroelement (nitrogen, sulfur, or phosphorus) led to an increase in the amount of lipids; nitrogen limitation was the most effective. Diluted nutrient media (5‐ or 10‐fold) were identified as the best method to stimulate lipid overproduction (60% of DW). The strategy for lipid overproduction consists of the fast growth of P. kessleri culture grown in the complete medium to produce sufficient biomass (DW more than 10 g/L) followed by the dilution of nutrient medium to stop growth and cell division by limitation of all elements, leading to induction of lipid production and accumulation up to 60% DW. Cultivation conditions necessary for maximizing lipid content in P. kessleri biomass generated in a scale‐up solar open thin‐layer photobioreactor were described. Biotechnol. European Union (EU) Member States have agreed to limit their greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from sectors not covered by the EU Emissions Trading Scheme, including emissions from agricultural sector. The aggregated GHG emission rate (i.e. t CO2 eq. from agricultural sector per country) is commonly used to measure the overall size of agriculture’s influence on climate. And indeed, since 2005, EU has managed to decrease its aggregated GHG emissions by 3.1%. However, the question is—does that mean that EU’s agriculture has become less emission intensive? This paper answers the question by providing a different perspective for the assessment and comparison of the agricultural GHG emissions in 28 EU Member States. It is done by applying three different approaches, including creation of derived indicators and application of multi-criteria analysis (TOPSIS), which is a novel approach for comparison of agricultural GHG emission mitigation performance. The results show that each EU Member State performs very differently in emission intensities. Even more, the emission intensity results show an alarming tendency of increase in most of the EU Member States, which indicates that the measured changes in aggregate agricultural GHG emission rates are misleading. Therefore, the paper suggests reconsidering the policy targets for GHG emission limits.  相似文献

Novel naphthalimide–poly(amidoamine) dendrimer fluorescent dyes were synthesized, and their structures were identified and confirmed using different characterization methods such as Fourier transform infrared, 1H NMR, 13C NMR, differential scanning calorimetry, elemental analysis and UV–vis spectroscopy. The spectrophotometric studies demonstrated absorption maxima (λmax) and extinction coefficient (εmax) values in the ranges of 429–438 nm and 25,635–88,618 L/mol/cm, respectively. The dyeing, fastness and antimicrobial properties of dyed wool fibers were examined. Colorimetric measurements demonstrated a greenish‐yellow hue with remarkable fluorescence intensity on dyed wool. Although the fastness properties of naphthalimide dye on wool fibers were poor/moderate, color fastness was appreciably improved through modification of the dye using dendrimers. The results revealed that the newly synthesized dyes are potent antimicrobial agents on wool fibers. Overall, it was deduced that poly(amidoamine) (PAMAM) dendrimers could be exploited as a promising tool in tailoring the different properties of naphthalimide dyes, being suitable for dyeing and antimicrobial finishing agents for wool fibers. This paper evaluates the relative performance and competitive ability of seven legumes from the Iberian Peninsula, Spain (one already invasive in Australia), grown singly or pairwise with seven legumes from south‐western Australia in their own soils. Indices of growth used were root, shoot and total mass and shoot dimensions. Water content, xylem water potential during drying and nodule production were also measured. The index of competition used was the intensity of competition coefficient (ICC), which is suitable for additive designs. The Australian species usually grew larger than the Spanish species, in their presence or absence, although the results were sensitive to the index of growth or resource capture used. The Australian legumes usually possessed greater total water content than the co‐occurring Spanish legumes. At least five Australian species were less reduced or not affected at all by inter‐regional competition compared with growth in isolation. Two Australian legumes performed relatively poorly in the presence of at least four Spanish legumes. The ICC identified many instances of growth promotion (facilitation) of the Australian species, which we attribute to extra nitrogen obtained through enhanced nodulation of both cohabiting species. Five of the seven Spanish species were outcompeted by the Australian species, whereas the growth of two was sometimes facilitated. Although the Spanish legumes had greater competitive ability in the more fertile Australian soils, they remained competitively inferior to the Australian legumes in their first season of growth and none is likely to displace the native legumes at this stage of growth. Longer‐term field studies are needed to fully evaluate the potential invasiveness of perennial legumes.  相似文献

本文提出了一种基于哈达玛变换的频谱图像灰度共生矩阵(Hadamard-GLCM)的高强度聚焦超声治疗无损测温方法。利用高强度聚焦超声辐照新鲜离体猪肉组织,获取辐照前后的B超图像的减影图像,采用Hadamard变换对其进行处理,获取频谱图像,将频谱图像的灰度共生矩阵惯性矩作为反应温度变化的信息参数。实验表明:不仅单组数据的Hadamard-GLCM惯性矩(HGMI)和温度能很好的线性拟合,而且多组数据的Hadamard-GLCM惯性矩与温度也成近似的线性关系,而且斜率非常接近,拟合度更接近1,误差小,对温度的分辨能力高,容错能力强,与传统的测温方法相比有着明显的优势,能为HIFU治疗过程中的无损测温提供有效的实时依据。  相似文献
