Abstract: Exurban development is nonmetropolitan, residential development characterized by a human population density and average property size intermediate between suburban and rural areas. Although growth in exurban areas is outpacing that of urban, suburban, or rural landscapes, studies of deer (Odocoileus spp.) ecology in exurban areas are nonexistent. During 2003–2005, we studied space use (i.e., seasonal home-range and core-area size and habitat use relative to human dwellings) and survival of 43 female white-tailed deer (O. virginianus) in an exurban setting near Carbondale, Illinois. Deer had larger home ranges than most suburban deer populations and generally smaller home ranges than rural deer populations. When we analytically controlled for habitat use, deer exhibited a subtle avoidance of human dwellings, especially during the fawning season. The annual survival rate was among the highest reported in the literature at 0.872 (SE = 0.048). Only 5 deer (cause-specific mortality rate = 0.091) were harvested by hunters, indicating major obstacles for wildlife managers when attempting to manage deer in exurban areas using traditional hunter harvest.  相似文献

Experimental allergic encephalomyelitis (EAE) is an autoimmune syndrome that can be induced in Lewis rats by myelin basic protein (BP) in complete Freund's adjuvant (CFA). Rats that have recovered from a primary episode of EAE display paradoxical long-term resistance to EAE reinduction by BP-CFA. Previous observations indicated, however, that clinical disease could be reinduced in convalescent rats by a concomitant secondary challenge with BP-CFA + Bordetella pertussis extract (PERT). Vascular permeability changes in the central nervous system (CNS) paralleled disease reinduction. To further probe the relationship between disease reinduction and vascular permeability, convalescent rats were treated with the vasoactive amine antagonist cyproheptadine (CYP) prior to a secondary challenge with BP-CFA + PERT. Data presented here indicate that CYP treatment results in substantial protection of convalescent rats from clinical disease reinduction by BP-CFA + PERT. CYP did not, however, prevent the development of new CNS lesions. CYP therapy also altered the clinical course of EAE induced by a primary injection of BP-CFA + PERT. In these rats, there was a delay in the onset of clinical signs as well as in the appearance of CNS lesions. Nevertheless, both CYP-treated and untreated naive rats challenged with BP-CFA + PERT eventually developed severe and usually lethal EAE. The effect of CYP on EAE induced in naive rats without including PERT in the sensitization protocol was also evaluated. In contrast to the mitigating effect of CYP on EAE induced or reinduced by BP-CFA + PERT, CYP treatment did not affect the clinical course or the development of CNS lesions in rats challenged with BP-CFA alone. Likewise, the passive transfer of EAE, mediated by mitogen-stimulated cells obtained from BP-CFA-sensitized donors, was not affected by CYP treatment. Collectively, these data indicate that CYP therapy altered the expression of EAE induced by regimens that included PERT, but did not affect EAE induced without PERT. In view of the opposing effects of PERT and CYP on vascular permeability, these data are consistent with the hypothesis that alterations in vascular permeability may play a crucial role in controlling the expression of autoimmune neurological diseases.  相似文献

The kinetics of dithionite reduction of the oxidized heme nonapeptide fragment of horse heart cytochrome c have been measured as a function of ionic strength at pH 7 and pH 9 by the stopped-flow technique. Dithionite concentration dependences indicate that the radical anion monomer, SO2-., is the active reductant. The pH 7 ionic strength dependence suggests that the heme peptide is reacting as a negatively charged molecule (its overall charge is calculated to be -1). Comparison of these results with the known rate of dithionite reduction of cytochrome c indicates that the heme nonapeptide has substantially greater inherent reactivity than cytochrome c, perhaps due to the greater accessibility of the heme.  相似文献

Factors limiting periphyton accrual in east-central Illinois agricultural streams were investigated. Nutrient-diffusing substrata were used to examine periphyton macronutrient limitation in streams in two agricultural watersheds. Substrata consisted of sand-agar mixtures with one of six experimental treatments. Macronutrients included carbon, nitrate, phosphate and combinations of the three. Substrata were collected after a 5 and 9 day period and analyzed for chlorophyll a. None of the treatments were significantly greater than the controls at any of the seven stations, thus we conclude that periphyton in these streams was not nutrient limited. Highest periphyton colonization/growth rates were associated with the smaller upstream reaches, while lower rates occurred in the larger downstream reaches. Multiple regression showed that most of the variance in the rate of chlorophyll a accrual after five days was explained through water temperature and turbidity (r2 = 0.91); whereas, stream nitrate and phosphate concentrations accounted for no significant portion of the variance. We conclude that instream primary production in agricultural streams of central Illinois is limited by temperature and light.  相似文献

Unfractionated bone marrow (BM) cells were cryopreserved in 1- to 2-ml aliquots using a mixture containing both 5% dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) and 6% hydroxyethyl starch (HES) in an attempt to increase the viable cell yield and reduce the clumping after thawing, observed when 10% DMSO is used alone. Samples thawed after storage for 6 months in the vapor phase of liquid nitrogen, were assayed. Compared to prefreeze values, there was both a greater number of cells that excluded Trypan Blue (50 +/- 12 vs 28 +/- 12%, P less than .01) and a greater CFU-C Recovery (110 +/- 20 vs 89 +/- 35%, P less than .02) for cells in the DMSO/HES mixture, compared to those in 10% DMSO alone. No macroscopic clumping of the thawed cells was observed for those cryopreserved in the mixture in contrast to those in DMSO alone. Freezing was done without a rate-controlled freezing apparatus by simply placing the samples initially into a -80 degrees C freezer, and then later into a liquid nitrogen freezer. Additional samples stored in the DMSO/HES mixture were kept at only -80 degrees C, and when thawed 12 to 16 months later also gave an excellent CFU-C recovery (105 +/- 39% of prefreeze). The DMSO/HES mixture allows for a simplified BM cryopreservation technique that not only assures excellent recovery of CFU-Cs and eliminates clumping upon thawing, but also does not require either the use of a rate-controlled freezer or liquid nitrogen temperatures for storage up to a year.  相似文献

Alloimmunization with rabbit thymus cells resulted in an antiserum (anti-Rly) which was shown to react with rabbit lymphocytes by an indirect rosette technique. The titration curve obtained with dilutions of anti-Rly antiserum on lymph node cells revealed two plateaus indicating that the antiserum was multispecific; at low dilutions of antiserum, within the first plateau, both B and T cells were rosetted whereas at high dilutions, within the second plateau, only B cells were rosetted. The antigen detected at high dilution was designated LB-1 (lymphocyte B cell alloantigen 1). The evidence that the cells identified within the second plateau are B cells is as follows: 1) simultaneous enumeration of LB-1+ and Ig+ (B) cells by use of distinguishable erythrocytes (sheep and human) as indicator cells revealed that of the 53% rosettes observed, essentially all (51%) were mixed rosettes containing both erythrocytes whereas simultaneous enumeration of LB-1+ and T+ cells (identified by anti-T cell antiserum) showed essentially no mixed rosettes (less than 2%); 2) approximately 80% of purified Ig+ (B) cells were identified as LB-1+ cells whereas essentially no (< 1%) purified T cells could be detected as LB-1+; 3) the percentages of LB-1+ cells and Ig+ cells were both reciprocal to the precentages of T+ cells identified in various lymphoid organs except for bone marrow; 4) the removal of LB-1+ cells from spleen cells of rabbits immunized with sheep red blood cells resulted in a depletion (42–71%) of direct plaque forming cells (PFC). Since the percentages of bone marrow cells rosetted using anti-LB-1 antiserum (approximately 70%) was much greater than the percentage rosetted using anti-Ig (approximately 10%), it appears that the anti-LB-1 antiserum is not directed against an Ig allotype. The titration curves of the anti-Rly antiserum on peripheral blood lymphocytes of a large rabbit family suggested that the LB-1 antigen on B cells is an alloantigen probably inherited in simple Mendelian fashion. Adsorption studies indicated that the LB-1 antigen on B cells is not detectable on brain, liver, kidney or erythrocytes.  相似文献

Tubulobulbar complexes (TBCs) were found in nine mammalian species (opossum, vole, guinea-pig, mouse, hamster, rabbit, dog, monkey and human) primarily originating from the plasma membrane overlying the acrosome of late spermatids. Fewer complexes (4–10) were noted in these species than has been previously reported for the rat (up to 24). TBCs were not seen emanating from round spermatids or those elongated spermatids located within the deep recesses of the Sertoli cell, but they appeared as the spermatids came to reside much closer to the tubular lumen in preparation for release. TBCs developed in areas deficient or lacking in Sertoli filaments and endoplasmic reticulum (ectoplasmic specialization). In general their structural configuration was similar to that shown in the rat, although minor differences were noted. Fine fibrils were observed connecting the distal portion of the spermatid tube with the Sertoli plasma membrane forming a bristle-coated pit. The length of TBCs from most species studied was 1–2 μm, whereas those of the opossum extended 6–8 μm into an apical Sertoli process. TBCs were degraded within the Sertoli cell by its lysosomes prior to sperm release, and for most species there was evidence indicating that formation of more than one generation of TBCs occurred. As sperm release approached, TBCs formed preferentially from the leading edge of spermatids with spatulate heads. The Sertoli cell gradually withdrew from around the spermatid head until only the tip of the head was embedded within the Sertoli cell. This region of contact frequently demonstrated TBCs. The proposed functions of TBCs are reviewed and discussed in light of these findings from other species.  相似文献

An investigation was conducted on changes in sperm morphology along the excurrent duct of bulls. The study comprised 20 bulls with proven fertility and normal semen picture, and 10 bulls with pathologic semen. The morphology of spermatozoa was evaluated on ejaculates and on postslaughter collected contents from the excurrent duct. The incidence of pathologic sperm heads decreased along the duct in both groups of bulls. The main decrease generally occurred in caput epididymidis. In bulls with pathologic semen, the decrease continued in lower regions of epididymis and was deferens. The rate and pattern of sperm removal seem to primarily depend on the quality of spermatozoa entering the excurrent duct. The removal was clearly selective and is assumed to be associated with phagocytosis of spermatozoa mainly in the efferent ductules and proximal part of caput epididymis. Proximal cytoplasmic droplets were present on almost all sperm in the efferent ductules. The incidence decreased during passage along the genital tract. Migration of cytoplasmic droplets from a proximal to a distal position took place between regions C and D of the caput epididymidis. The incidence of middle-piece abnormalities decreased during passage along the genital tract, while the incidence of sperm tail abnormalities increased in the corpus and cauda epididymidis in all bulls.  相似文献

Linear hypoplasia of the deciduous teeth is rare in most human populations, but common where nutritional status is poor. Deciduous enamel hypoplasia, hypocalcification, and hypoplasia-related caries are described in Middle and Late Woodland skeletal series from the Lower Illinois Valley. Gross enamel defects that can be referred to pre-natal development are found in 83 of 170 children under six years of age at death. Circular caries secondary to hypoplasia is significantly more common in the Late Woodland series, reflecting the apparent higher cariogenicity of Late Woodland diets. There is a significant association between prenatal dental defects and bony evidence for anemia and infectious disease. Children with enamel defects show relatively higher weaning age mortality than those without. These relationships suggest that at least moderate levels of malnutrition existed in Illinois Woodland populations.  相似文献
