We investigated interspecific competition between Campoletis chlorideae Uchida (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae) and Microplitis mediator (Haliday) (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) in their host, the cotton bollworm, Helicoverpa armigera (Hübner) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) under laboratory conditions. Cotton bollworm larvae were allowed to be parasitized by both wasp species simultaneously or sequentially at different time intervals. When host larvae were parasitized simultaneously by both parasitoids, the majority of the cocoons produced were of M. mediator. When host larvae were parasitized initially by M. mediator followed by C. chlorideae at 12 or 24 h, parasitoids emerging from the multiparasitized hosts were mainly M. mediator. In contrast, when host larvae were parasitized initially by C. chlorideae, followed by M. mediator 12 or 24 h later, parasitoids emerging from the multiparasitized hosts were mainly C. chlorideae. Dissections of host larvae at various time intervals after parasitization by the two parasitoids showed that first instars of M. mediator could physically attack the larvae of C. chlorideae, but not the eggs of C. chlorideae. When a host was parasitized by both wasp species sequentially, more host larvae died and the number of wasp offspring was significantly reduced compared to a host parasitized by only one wasp. Conversely, in simultaneous multiparasitism, the host mortality and wasp offspring production were not significantly different from those parasitized by single wasp species. 相似文献

Through intentional and accidental introduction, more than 100 species of alien Ichneumonidae and Braconidae (Hymenoptera)
have become established in the Hawaiian Islands. The extent to which these parasitoid wasps have penetrated native wet forests
was investigated over a 1,765 m elevation gradient on windward Hawai’i Island. For >1 year, malaise traps were used to continuously
monitor parasitoid abundance and species richness in nine sites over three elevations. A total of 18,996 individuals from
16 subfamilies were collected. Overall, the fauna was dominated by aliens, with 44 of 58 species foreign to the Hawaiian Islands.
Ichneumonidae was dominant over Braconidae in terms of both diversity and abundance, comprising 67.5% of individuals and 69.0%
of species collected. Parasitoid abundance and species richness varied significantly with elevation: abundance was greater
at mid and high elevations compared to low elevation while species richness increased with increasing elevation, with all
three elevations differing significantly from each other. Nine species purposely introduced to control pest insects were found,
but one braconid, Meteorus laphygmae, comprised 98.0% of this assemblage, or 28.3% of the entire fauna. Endemic species, primarily within the genera Spolas and Enicospilus, were collected almost exclusively at mid- and high-elevation sites, where they made up 22.1% and 36.0% of the total catch,
respectively. Overall, 75.9% of species and 96.0% of individuals are inferred to parasitize Lepidoptera larvae and pupae.
Our results support previous data indicating that alien parasitoids have deeply penetrated native forest habitats and may

Superparasitism in the solitary ectoparasitoid Aptesis nigrocincta: the influence of egg load and host encounter rate 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Theory predicts that the acceptance of hosts already parasitized by a conspecific will depend both on egg load and the availability of hosts. In the present laboratory study, we tested the effect of egg load and host encounter rate on the propensity of superparasitism in the solitary parasitoid Aptesis nigrocincta Gravenhorst (Hymenoptera, Ichneumonidae), a synovigeneous ectoparasitoid of prepupae of the European Apple Sawfly. Parasitoid females carry few voluminous eggs at a time and the egg maturation rate is less than one egg per day. Egg load was manipulated by giving females access to hosts one week prior to the start of treatments and host availability by giving females access to either one host cocoon every day or every other day. In the first treatment where females had a high egg load of 5.3 egg in their ovaries and encountered host cocoons at low rates, we found that parasitized hosts were accepted to the same degree as healthy hosts. In females with significantly decreased egg load (3.8 eggs) encountering hosts at the same rate we found a slight but non‐significant decrease in the acceptance of parasitized hosts compared with healthy hosts. In contrast, A. nigrocincta females accepted significantly fewer parasitized hosts at a high host encounter rate that would lead them to the point of egg limitation in the near future. Within the range of egg loads tested, the host encounter rate appears to be the most important determinant for a females decision to oviposit onto hosts already parasitized by a conspecific. 相似文献

Cascading effects of variation in plant vigour on the relative performance of insect herbivores and their parasitoids 总被引:5,自引:1,他引:4
Abstract 1. Consequences of variation in food plant quality were estimated for a system consisting of two monophagous noctuid herbivores and three ichneumonid parasitoids.
2. In a natural population, pupal weights of the herbivores in this system, Nonagria typhae and Archanara sparganii , were found to be highly variable. Pupal weights increased strongly and consistently with the increase in the vigour of the host plant, Typha latifolia , providing support for the plant vigour hypothesis. Correspondingly, as the moths do not feed as adults, a strong, positive correlation between host vigour and fecundity of the herbivores would be expected.
3. There were strong and positive relationships between adult body sizes of the parasitoids and the sizes of their lepidopteran hosts. Moreover, a direct, positive link between plant quality and parasitoid size was documented.
4. For all three parasitoids, cascading effects of plant quality on body size were weaker than for the herbivores. Differences in the importance of adult feeding and oviposition behaviour suggest that dependence of fitness on body size is also weaker in the parasitoids than in the moths. It is therefore concluded that the numerical response of the herbivore population to a change in plant quality should exceed the corresponding response in the parasitoids.
5. The results of this work imply that variation in plant variables may affect performance of different trophic levels to a different extent. It is suggested that the importance of adult feeding for the reproductive success (capital vs. income breeding strategies) in both herbivores and parasitoids is an essential aspect to consider when predicting responses of such a system to changes in plant quality. 相似文献
