Abstract 1. Parasitoids in the genus Trogus (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae) attack the larvae of swallowtail butterflies (Lepidoptera: Papilionidae). Only two of the three major tribes of the subfamily Papilioninae are attacked although species of all three tribes commonly occur together. The tribe Troidini is relatively free of parasitoids of any kind, and it has been proposed that the aristolochic acids sequestered by troidines protect them from parasitism.
2. The responses of T. pennator (Fabricius) to the sympatric troidine Battus philenor (Linnaeus) were examined. Three hypotheses that could explain why this wasp does not parasitise B. philenor were considered. (1) Battus philenor does not produce compounds used by the wasp to locate hosts. (2) The larval integument contains compounds that deter attack. (3) The parasitoid offspring cannot survive in B. philenor .
3. The first hypothesis was not supported as the frass of B. philenor larvae was found to act as a searching arrestant comparable to the frass of a host species.
4. The second hypothesis was supported. The B. philenor larvae were rejected when the wasps examined them using their antennae, and ethanolic washes of B. philenor cuticle deterred attack by T. pennator when applied to otherwise acceptable host larvae. Bioassays of fractions of the ethanolic wash and of pure aristolochic acids established that aristolochic acids were at least partly responsible for the deterrent effect.
5. The third hypothesis was also supported. Larvae of B. philenor attacked by the parasitoids developed into butterflies.
6. These results indicate that both behavioural and physiological barriers, the former attributable at least in part to sequestered compounds and the latter of unknown mechanism, prevent T. pennator from parasitising B. philenor . 相似文献

East Asian species of the genera Hybrizon and Ghilaromma are reviewed. Four species of Hybrizon, H. buccatus (Brébisson 1825), H. ghilarovi Tobias, 1988, H. juncoi (Ceballos 1957) and H. flavofacialis Tobias, 1988 and two species of Ghilaromma, G. orientalis Tobias, 1988 and G. ussuriensis Tobias, 1988, were recognized. H. ghilarovi was recorded from Korea, Japan and China, while H. juncoi was recorded from Korea, for the first time. The specimens recorded from Japan as G. fuliginosi (Wilkinson, 1930) by Watanabe (1984) are referred to G. orientalis herein. This species is newly recorded from Korea and Japan. Keys to East Asian species of Hybrizon and the world species of Ghilaromma are also provided. 相似文献

Campoletis sonorensis is a solitary larval endoparasitoid of several Heliothis spp. pests. This study was carried out to develop media devoid of insect sources for in vitro rearing the parasitoid. Trehalose, lysine, threonine, asparagine, glutamine, hydroxyproline, serine, bovine serum albumin, and lactalbumin were beneficial to C. sonorensis. Addition of fresh chicken egg yolk at a low level improved the artificial media. Addition of 20-hydroxyecdysone increased the molting rate, reduced the critical size at molt and decreased development time. Parasitoid development in vitro was dependent on eggs that had been in the host for at least 22 h. Luminosity was also critical for the development of C. sonorensis in vitro. Optimal development occurred in a L14:D10 photoperiod at 43 Lux light intensity. Utilizing the best media and conditions, 100% of the parasitoid larvae reached the second instar and over 37% molted to the third instar. However, no further development occurred. 相似文献

Our understanding of the critical shift in life history among insect parasitoids from ectoparasitism to endoparasitism is hindered by the fact that this particular life history trait is not known for many phylogenetically important taxa. One method of coping with this problem is to seek correlations between the ovipositor structure and this life history trait among taxa whose life history is known, and then to use this to infer the trait in species whose life history in unknown. In one group of parasitoid wasps, the Ichneumonoidea (Hymenoptera), we scored a total of 20 morphometric and morphological characters of the ovipositor for 41 species whose life histories are known – representing all the main clades in which there have been independent transitions to endoparasitism plus a broad range of the ectoparasitoid groups; we then used phylogenetic regression and discriminant analyses to infer the life history of four species whose life histories are unknown. To allow for the effect of phylogenetic non-independence in the discriminant analysis, we carried out analyses using different randomly chosen representatives of the endoparasitoid clades (phylogenetic regression controls for phylogeny). These two methods gave congruent results from which we conclude that Megalohelcon and Gnamptodon are endoparasitoids, and Aspilodemon and Allobracon are ectoparasitoids. We discuss the consequences of these inferences for our understanding of the evolution of endoparasitism in the Ichneumonoidea. © 2003 The Linnean Society of London. Abstract Epiphyas postvittana (Walker) is a serious pest of a number of horticultural crops including grapes in Australia and New Zealand. This study brings together information on the parasitoid complex associated with E. postvittana that previously was fragmented and largely inaccessible. We include species reared during a 3-year study of the parasitoids of E. postvittana in the vineyards of the Coonawarra region, South Australia, material from several Australian agricultural insect collections and records from the literature. An illustrated key is presented for 25 species of parasitoids and hyperparasitoids associated with E. postvittana , along with information on the taxonomy, identification, distribution and biology of each species. Taxa newly recorded from this host are Perilampus sp. (Perilampidae), and six species of Ichneumonidae: Euceros sp., Labium sp., Netelia sp., Plectochorus sp., Temalucha minuta (Morley) and Eriborus epiphyas sp. n., the latter species being described in full. 相似文献

The Hymenopterans Glyptapanteles liparidis, Microplitis sp. and Diadegma sp. were found to be larval parasitoids and koinobionts of Acronicta rumicis (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae). Mesochorus semirufus is believed to be a new unreported hyperparasitoid of G. liparidis, which, along with M. semirufus, is a gregarious parasitoid. In contrast, the parasitoids Microplitis sp. and Diadegma sp. are solitary. All of the hymenopteran parasitoids are multivoltine insects that emerge from A. rumicis more than once. Compcilura concinnata, Euexorista sp. and Exorista sp. of the Diptera were found to be larval–pupal parasitoids, solitary parasitoids and koinobionts. These three species are univoltine, and emerge only once from A. rumicis. Morphological and life cycle data were collected for G. liparidis, and for the parasitoids of that species found in this study. The major and minor axes of an egg of G. liparidis were 0.10 and 0.02 mm, respectively, while the mean clutch size of G. liparidis was 67.71 ± 39.36 individuals. The body length of female and male G. liparidis were 2.25 ± 0.06 and 2.21 ± 0.12 mm, respectively, and the longevity of an adult was 2.93 ± 0.96 days. Among the parasitoids, the mean body length of an adult Microplitis sp. was 3.5 mm and adults lived for an average of 8.13 ± 3.54 days. The adult Diadegma sp. was larger (mean body length 6.5 mm) but lived for a shorter interval (3.33 ± 1.32 days). The body lengths of female and male M. semirufus were 3.16 ± 0.11 and 3.10 ± 0.23 mm, respectively, greater than the body lengths of female and male G. liparidis. The body lengths of adult C. concinnata, Euexorista sp. and Exorista sp. were 9.5, 9.53 and 8.68 mm, respectively. All of their pupae were dark brown. 相似文献
