The study on 10 lakes within the Ethiopian Rift Valley during March–May 1991 covered a range of conductivity (K25) between 286 and 49100 µS cm–1. HCO3 — CO inf3 sup2– and Na+ were the dominant ions in all the lakes. Concentrations of K+, Cl and SO inf4 sup2– increased with increasing salinity and alkalinity, whereas Ca2+ and Mg2+ decreased. Comparison of these data with previous records showed that a ten-fold dilution of total ionic concentration occurred over 30 years in Lake Metahara and about three-fold increase occurred over 65 years in Lake Abijata. Concentrations of soluble silica were generally high (12–222 mg SiO2 1–1) and increased with increasing salinity, except for Lake Chamo which showed SiO2 depletion (to < 1 mg SiO2 1 –1) over the past three decades.The relationship between ionic concentration and phosphorus was irregular although high phosphorus concentrations generally corresponded with increasing salinity. Fitting data to the Dillon & Rigler (1974) chlorophyll a — total phosphorus relationship suggested that lakes Zwai, Awassa and Chamo are phosphorus-limited, whereas others have surplus phosphorus.  相似文献

The Salton Sea, the largest lake in California, has a surface elevation 69 m below sea level which is maintained predominantly by the balance of agricultural runoff and evaporation. The lack of outflowing streams is resulting in a gradual buildup of salts in the lake, increasing the salinity. A 15 month microcosm experiment was conducted to determine the effects of salinity and tilapia ( Oreochromis mossambicus) on an assemblage of benthic and planktonic Salton Sea algae and invertebrates. This article reports the responses of the benthic invertebrates. Microcosms (312 l fiberglass tanks) were set up without tilapia at 30, 39, 48, 57, and 65 g · l-1. Additional microcosms were set up with tilapia at 39 and 57 g · l-1. In the absence of fish Gammarus mucronatus dominated the benthos at the lower salinities, and Trichocorixa reticulata and the larvae of Ephydra riparia were most abundant above 48 g · l-1. The most abundant meiofaunal species included the harpacticoid copepod. Cletocamptus deitersi, three nematodes, the rotifer Brachionus plicatilis, ciliates, including Condylosoma sp. and Fabrea salina, two foraminiferans including Quinqueloculina sp., and a large flagellate. Most meiofaunal species responding to salinity were most abundant at 65 g · l-1, especialy after 6 months when Gammarus dominated the lower salinities. The tilapia reduced the abundance of macrofaunal species, especially at 39 g · l-1, and generally increased the abundance of meiofaunal species and ciliates. The microcosm benthic macro- and meiofaunal communities were most likely structured by Gammarus, salinity and tilapia. Gammarus reduced the other species by predation and changing the detritus from an algal base to a fecal pellet base. Gammarus was itself reduced by tilapia and by reduced reproductive success above 39 g · l-1. More species were therefore able to compete at higher salinities and in the presence of tilapia. Tilapia also affected the benthos by depositing loosely packaged fecal material which may support more meiofaunal species than either the robust Gammarus fecal pellets that were abundant at 39 g · l-1 or the algae-fecal pellet mix at 57 g · l-1. The influence of the water quality of tributary streams on the relative abundance in benthic gillnet catches (catch per unit effort, cpue) of allopatric brown Salmo trutta was assessed in associated acidic, softwater lakes. The study was carried out over 6 years (1989–1994) in 15 lakes located at altitudes between 230–715 m a.s.l. in two Norwegian catchments. The water quality of the main inlets and outlets varied little, as indicated by their of pH range (4·93–5·51) and calcium concentrations (0·19–0·44 mg 1−1), but varied more with respect to concentrations of inorganic, monomeric aluminium (7·0–41·0 μg l−1). Most of the lakes were also fed by secondary streams with better water quality: a maximum pH of 6·56, calcium levels of up to 0·74mg 1−1, and inorganic aluminium levels as low as l·0 μg 1−1. The cpue was inversely correlated with lake altitude ( r 2=0·50), and thus was adjusted to a mean altitude. The calcium concentration in the richest secondary stream to each lake, its richness judged on the basis of its acid-neutralizing capacity, had the highest predictive power of the variability in cpue ( r 2 = 0·49).The calcium content in the other secondary streams or in the main inlets and outlets did not correlate with cpue. Alkalinity in the main outlets correlated to some extent with cpue ( r 2 = 0·27). It is suggested that secondary streams with good water quality provide important refuges for the recruitment of brown trout in acidic softwater lakes.  相似文献

Forty species of predaceous diving beetles (Coleoptera, Dytiscidae) were collected in sweepnet samples from 98 boreal lakes in northern Sweden. Samples from protected sites with vegetation had significantly more specimens and species than those from exposed sites without vegetation in the same lakes. No geographically based differences, e.g. latitudinal or in distance from the coast, were found. These gradients were 200 and 150 km long, respectively. Species' distribution in terms of occurence at number of sites was positively correlated with the mean abundance of the species. The relationship between species' abundance and body length was characterized by the lack of large, abundant species. Partial least square regressions on dytiscid abundance and species richness showed low predictive power of lake area, altitude and water chemistry. The seven environmental variables used explained at best 15.3 and 24.4% of the total variance in abundance and species richness, respectively. The results are compared to activity trap catches of dystiscids in lakes in an adjacent region. A majority of the species occured in both materials. However, species occuring in high proportion in one of the materials, were rare in the other material. The mean body length of the species caught more efficiently with traps was not larger than that of those overpresented in net sampling. Based on this study and the available literature data, the regional species pool of boreal lake dytiscids is estimated to 30–40 species. It is still an open question if lake assemblages are markedly poorer than those found in the development of vegetation, whereas the impact of water chemistry is small.  相似文献

Concentrations of total phosphorus (TP), inorganic and organic nitrogen, organic matter, and chlorophyll-a were studied in ten mountain lakes at various stages of acidification, trophy, and type of watershed during each July and October from 1987 to 1990. Concentrations of TP and total organic matter were higher in July than in October. Concentrations of NH44 +-N decreased and NO3 -N increased from July to October. The relative composition of total nitrogen (TN) and its concentration were strongly dependent on the type of watershed: the lowest TN concentrations were observed in lakes with forested watersheds, increasing above the timberline and reaching maximum values in acidified lakes with rocky watersheds. In the pool of TN, nitrate was most important in lakes above the timberline (70–86% of TN), and organic nitrogen in forest lakes (> 90% of TN). Lakes with rocky watersheds were characterized by high ratios of TN:TP (> 250 by mass). The concentration of chlorophyll-a varied widely, from 0.01 to 22.6 µg l–1, without any consistent change between July and October, and were P limited.  相似文献

The large but shallow (3,558 km2, up to 15.3 m deep) lake is eutrophic, with Chironomus plumosus and Potamothrix hammoniensis as dominating macroinvertebrates in the profundal. The extensive well-aerated sublittoral with sandy bottom sediments has a mesotrophic appearance and supports a diverse fauna with several oxyphilous species, including a very abundant population of Dreissena polymorpha. The phytophilous fauna is limited to small sheltered areas only. The average abundance of the small animals of macrozoobenthos (without big molluscs) was 2,617 ind. m–2, their biomass 12.34 g m–2 (corresponding to 52.2 kJ m–2) in 1964–1994. The same figures for big molluscs (mostly Dreissena) were 304 ind. m–2 and 238 g m–2 in 1964–1994, and even 864 ind. m–2 and 687 g m–2 in 1985–1988, at the time of their special mapping. The sublittoral zone revealed the lowest biomass of small animals but the highest biomass of big molluscs. The southern, shallower lake regions, more enriched with nutrients and better protected from wind, revealed a significantly higher biomass of small macrozoobenthos in the near-shore zone than the cleaner and open northern part, while no positive effect of enrichment was observed neither in the biomass of profundal zoobenthos nor in that of big molluscs. The production of the small macrozoobenthos was calculated as 111 and 53 kJ m–2 during two annual cycles in Lake Peipsi s. s., the most productive period being the autumn overturn. Lake Peipsi-Pihkva has the highest abundance and biomass of macrozoobenthos among the large lakes of North Europe.  相似文献

Diel feeding patterns and daily food rations of five cyprinids Amblypharyngodon melettinus, Barbus chola, B. dorsalis, B. filamentosus and Rasbora daniconius in two Sri Lankan reservoirs were studied based on diel surveys using an iterative method, MAXIMS. A. melettinus and B. chola had single peaks of feeding whereas diel feeding patterns with two peaks occurred in the other three species. Daily food rations varied seasonally and with size of fish. The iterative technique used is reliably applicable for quantifying daily rations, and provides a means of linking trophic levels in natural populations of fish.  相似文献

A study has been carried out on the development of an ecological assessment method for shallow lakes in The Netherlands. Analyses of eutrophication characteristics of 93 lakes with, in total, 127 sampling localities gave insight into some of the steering variables, such as total-P, total-N, chlorophyll-a and transparency. On the basis of phytoplankton species composition, three main groups of lakes could be distinguished. The first group, characterized by persistent filamentous Cyanobacteria, had the highest summer means of chlorophyll-a and total-P. The second group was characterized by non-persistent filamentous Cyanobacteria, occurring in low abundancies, and at lower chlorophyll-a and total-P concentrations. The third group of lakes was characterized by the absence or very low abundance of the filamentous Cyanobacteria. As a result of these analyses, criteria for the abatement of eutrophication in shallow lakes could be refined.  相似文献

Synopsis The geological and biological history of Asian great lakes, especially Lake Biwa in Japan, are reviewed. The origins and affiliations of endemic flora and fauna are interpreted in light of current understanding of Lake Biwa. Recent historical changes in the lake, including detrimental impacts on native fauna and water quality are summarized. The social and cultural values associated with Asian lakes are reviewed, and contrasted to those of lakes elsewhere. In general Asian great lakes are smaller than those elsewhere, with the notable exception of Lake Baikal. Furthermore, Asian lakes are typically more eutrophic, with higher primary productivity. Societal values in China and other Asian countries have tended to favour nutrient enrichment and increased cultured fish production from lakes. The frequency and the importance of wind-induced resuspension were studied in the shallow, eutrophic Lake Arresø, Denmark (41 km2, mean depth 3 m). During storm events in autumn 1988 lake water samples were collected every 2–8 hours by an automatic sampler at a mid-lake station. The concentration of suspended solids and Tot-P was found to increase markedly. During storms up to 2 cm of the superficial sediment was resuspended, and the concentration of resuspended solids in the water column rose to 140 mg l–1. The resuspended particles had a relatively high settling velocity and on average, a relatively short residence time in the water column of 7 hours.A model which describes the concentration of resuspended solids as a function of wind velocity and of settling velocity of the resuspended particles is presented. Using additional wind velocity data from a nearby meteorological station, the model has been used to calculate the frequency of resuspension events and concentration of resuspended solids for the period from May to November 1988.These calculations show that resuspension occurred about 50% of the time. Average flux of suspended solids from the sediment to the water was 300 g m–2 d–1 and during 50% of the time lake water concentration of suspended solids was more than 32 mg l–1. A relationship between concentration of suspended solids and Secchi-depth is presented. Because of resuspension, Secchi-depth in Lake Arresø is reduced to 0.5 m.Resuspension also had a marked effect on Tot-P concentration in the lake water, and P input to the lake water being totally dominated by resuspension events.  相似文献
