We studied the forelimb interosseus muscle in horses, Equus caballus, to determine the muscular properties inherent in its function. Some authors have speculated that the equine interosseus contains muscle fibers at birth only to undergo loss of these fibers through postnatal ontogeny. We describe the muscle fibers in eight interosseus specimens from adult horses. These fibers were studied histochemically using myosin ATPase studies and immunocytochemically using several antibodies directed against type I and type II myosin heavy chain antibodies. We determined that 95% of the fibers were type I, presumed slow-twitch fibers. All fibers exhibited normal morphological appearance in terms of fiber diameter and cross-sectional area, suggesting that the muscles are undergoing normal cycles of recruitment. SDS-PAGE studies of myosin heavy chain isoforms were consistent with these observations of primarily slow-twitch muscle. Fibers were determined to be approximately 800 microm long when studied using nitric acid digestion protocols. Short fiber length combined with high pinnation angles suggest that the interosseus muscle is able to generate large amounts of force but can produce little work (measured as pulling the distal tendon proximally). While the equine interosseus muscle has undergone a general reduction of muscle content during its evolution, it remains composed of a significant muscular component that likely contributes to forelimb stability and elastic storage of energy during locomotion.  相似文献

The large mistletoe family, Loranthaceae, contains 75 genera, three of which are terrestrial root parasites. The remaining 72 genera are aerial parasites. Four basic haustorial system types are found in aerial genera: epicortical roots (ERs), wood roses, clasping unions and bark strands. The focus of this report is on genera in which ERs are present. Presence of ERs is based on our worldwide collection of haustoria and from literature sources. Our collections include 78% of all aerial genera and 72% of genera with ERs. Collections were analyzed using comparative morphological methods. Of the 72 aerial genera 40 (56%) have ERs and 75% of these are Old World. ERs are the most common haustorial type for Loranthaceae on every major landmass except Africa. Three ER types are described, basal, cauline and adventitious. Basal and adventitious ERs occur in both the Old and New World, whereas cauline ERs are exclusively New World. Adventitious ERs form in a few species in response to injury or epiparasitism. Significant differences occur between basal and cauline ERs in the extent and pattern of elongation, frequency of lateral root formation, and production of haustoria and shoots. Three patterns of axis extension of ERs are recognized, the monochasial sympodium, dichasial sympodium and monopodium. Marked differences in patterns of axis elongation occur between the Old and New World genera analyzed. In Old World taxa 94% of lateral roots contributed to a monochasial sympodium, whereas in New World taxa 84% of root extension was monopodial. Two strategies of resource procurement occur in genera with ERs; the “phalanx” strategy is found in species with basal ERs only, the “guerilla” strategy in New World species with cauline ERs. Species with ERs have the potential for clonal growth through fragmentation of stems, ERs, or both, but the extent of clonal growth in nature is unknown. The large number and wide distribution of genera with ERs add support to the hypothesis that the presence of ERs is an ancestral trait for aerial Loranthaceae.  相似文献

With the remarkable development of nanotechnology in recent years, new drug delivery approaches based on the state-of-the-art nanotechnology have been receiving significant attention. Nanoparticles, an evolvement of nanotechnology, are increasingly considered as a potential candidate to carry therapeutic agents safely into a targeted compartment in an organ, particular tissue or cell. These particles are colloidal structures with a diameter smaller than 1,000 nm, and therefore can penetrate through diminutive capillaries into the cell's internal machinery. This innovative delivery technique might be a promising technology to meet the current challenges in drug delivery. When loaded with a gene or drug agent, nanoparticles can become nanopills, which can effectively treat problematical diseases such as cancer. This article summarizes different types of nanoparticles drug delivery systems under investigation and their prospective therapeutic applications. Also, this article presents a closer look at the advances, current challenges, and future direction of nanoparticles drug delivery systems.  相似文献

Abstract: Plant species vary widely in their average leaf lifespan (LL) and specific leaf area (SLA, leaf area per dry mass). The negative LL–SLA relationship commonly seen among species represents an important evolutionary trade‐off, with higher SLA indicating greater potential for fast growth (higher rate of return on a given investment), but longer LL indicating a longer duration of the revenue stream from that investment. We investigated how these leaf‐economic traits related to aggregate properties of the plant crown. Across 14 Australian sclerophyll shrub species, those with long LL accumulated more leaf mass and leaf area per unit ground area. Light attenuation through their canopies was more severe. Leaf accumulation and light attenuation were more weakly related to SLA than to LL. The greater accumulation of foliage in species with longer LL and lower SLA may counterbalance their generally lower photosynthetic rates and light‐capture areas per gram of leaf.  相似文献

The use of sand-bentonite mixtures as liner materials for waste disposal is very common. In the laboratory, this study investigated hydraulic conductivities of such mixtures at different hydraulic pressure (hydraulic gradient), dry unit weights, and bentonite contents. The bentonite content and the dry unit weight of the samples were both important factors, significantly affecting the hydraulic conductivity of the liner material. A bentonite content of 5% was found to be sufficient in reaching a hydraulic conductivity under 10?9 m/s, when the liner material was compacted under near optimum moisture content. Nevertheless, hydraulic conductivity was found to increase with hydraulic pressures, especially for the 5% bentonite mixtures subjected to pressure above 40 kPa, suggesting some degree of internal erosion (washing out of particles).

Therefore, this paper discuses the influence of internal erosion of the mixtures under a given hydraulic gradient, on the final value of k. The internal erosion of the tested mixtures was found to be influenced mainly by porosity, which can be reduced by properly selecting the sand particle size distribution and the bentonite percentage. Furthermore, this study proposed an empirical expression to predict the risk of internal erosion in the sand-bentonite mixtures, and therefore of k being higher than planned. This expression can be used for designing bentonite content and compaction to achieve very low permeability.  相似文献

For animals that forage underground, the success with whichfood items are located may be closely related to burrow architecture.Fractal dimension, which describes how a burrow explores thesurrounding area in a way that is independent of burrow length,is an obvious choice for a single metric describing burrow shape.Although it is often assumed that burrows of high fractal dimensionwill be associated with greater foraging success, this has notpreviously been demonstrated. In this study, we use computersimulations to study the success with which burrows of differentfractal dimensions locate randomly distributed food items. Inaddition, we examine the effect of different patterns of fooddistribution (in particular the patchiness with which food itemsare distributed) and consider how using different criteria forlocating food items affects the relationship between fractaldimension and foraging success. We conclude that, under a widerange of plausible assumptions about the ways in which subterraneanrodents forage, burrows of high fractal dimension are more successfulat locating food items than burrows of lower fractal dimension.  相似文献

As a MAR-binding protein, SATB1 regulates genes by folding chromatin into a loop domain. Apoptosis is known to be accompanied by a collapse of nuclear architecture and cleavage of condensing chromatin into oligonucleosomal fragments. To further understand the functional role of MAR-binding proteins during apoptosis we investigated the relationship of the behavior of SATB1 and the collapse of nuclear architecture in Jurkat cells with immunostaining and Western blot analysis. We demonstrated that SATB1 formed special three-dimensional network distributions during early apoptosis. The distribution change of SATB1 was associated with cleavage of the protein and accompanied by the nuclear architecture collapse. Cleavage of SATB1 was mediated by caspase-3 and was apoptosis specific. Our observations further support the notion that early proteolysis of MAR-binding proteins might represent a universal mechanism that renders these DNA sites vulnerable to endonucleolysis.  相似文献

Questions: How does tree growth in a tropical woodland savanna vary as a function of size, and how is it affected by competition from neighbours, site attributes, and damage caused by disturbance? Location: western Zimbabwe. Methods: Trees of common species were tagged, mapped, and measured annually between 2001 and 2003 in a Kalahari sand woodland savanna. Diameter increments were analysed with mixed model regressions for the largest ramet in each genet. Stem diameter and damage, soil texture, and indices of competition at multiple spatial scales were used as covariates. Results: Stem diameter increased initially and then declined as a function of size in undamaged trees, which grew faster than damaged trees. Growth in damaged trees declined with size. No site differences were detected, and there was evidence for between‐tree competition on growth only in the fastest‐growing species, Brachystegia spiciformis. In several species the growth rate of the largest ramet increased as a function of the basal area of secondary ramets, contrary to expectations. For many species, the growth models showed poor explanatory power. Conclusions: Growth in Kalahari sand savanna trees varies as a function of size and changes in tree architecture caused by disturbance agents such as fire, frost, and elephant browsing. Disturbance may thus play an important role on vegetation dynamics through its effects on growth in the post‐disturbance phase. Growth is highly stochastic for some species in this system, and more deterministic in others. It is hypothesized that this dichotomy may be driven by differences in rooting depth among species.  相似文献

Needle primordia in buds and branch lengths were assessed in the crown of a plantation-grown white spruce tree. There was a gradation in needle primordia in buds in branches within the crown. The largest number of primordia was in the terminal bud of the leading main stem shoot, with the number in first-order whorl lateral shoot terminal buds decreasing from whorl 1 to whorl 4, below which buds contained a similar small number of primordia (about one-third as many as in the terminal shoot). Previous year's shoot elongation followed a similar pattern (i.e., elongation of whorl branches was greater closer to the top of the tree and elongation in the fourth through ninth whorls was about one-third that of the main stem leader). Higher order branches within whorls had within-branch gradation in shoot elongation and number of needle primordia, with older branches having as few as 16–30 primordia in buds and 3–4 cm elongation for high-order branches on older main stem whorls. There were strong correlations between the number of primordia in branch terminal buds and branch length/diameter and bud length/diameter/volume. In both black spruce and white spruce, there were strong correlations of number of needle primordia in main stem leader terminal buds with number of needle primordia in terminal buds of first and second whorl leaders.  相似文献

During vegetative development, higher plants continuously form new leaves in regular spatial and temporal patterns. Mutants with abnormal leaf developmental patterns not only provide a great insight into understanding the regulatory mechanism of plant architecture, but also enrich the ways to its modification by which crop yield could be improved. Here, we reported the characterization of the rice leafy-head2 (lhd2) mutant that exhibits shortened plastochron, dwarfism, reduced tiller number, and failure of phase transition from vegetative to reproductive growth. Anatomical and histological study revealed that the rapid emergence of leaves in lhd2 was resulted from the rapid initiation of leaf primordia whereas the reduced tiller number was a consequence of the suppression of the tiller bud outgrowth. The molecular and genetic analysis showed that LHD2 encodes a putative RNA binding protein with 67% similarity to maize TEl. Comparison of genome-scale expression profiles between wild-type and lhd2 plants suggested that LHD2 may regulate rice shoot development through KNOXand hormone-related genes. The similar phenotypes caused by LHD2 mutation and the conserved expression pattern of LHD2 indicated a conserved mechanism in controlling the temporal leaf initiation in grass.  相似文献
