Using 23 elite male athletes (8 cyclists, 7 kayakists, and 8 swimmers), the contribution of the anaerobic energy system to the time to exhaustion (t lim) at the minimal exercise intensity (speed or power) at which maximal oxygen uptake (O2 max) occurs (I V˙O2 max) was assessed by analysing the relationship between the t lim and the accumulated oxygen deficit (AOD). After 10-min warming up at 60% of O2 max, the exercise intensity was increased so that each subject reached his I V˙O2max in 30 s and then continued at that level until he was exhausted. Pre-tests included a continuous incremental test with 2 min steps for determining the I V˙O2max and a series of 5-min submaximal intensities to collect the data that would allow the estimation of the energy expenditure at I V˙O2max . The AOD for the t lim exercise was calculated as the difference between the above estimation and the accumulated oxygen uptake. The mean percentage value of energy expenditure covered by anaerobic metabolism was 15.2 [(SD 6)%, range 8.9–24.1] with significant differences between swimmers and kayakists (16.8% vs 11.5%, P≤0.05) and cyclists and kayakists (16.4% vs 11.5%, P≤0.05). Absolute AOD values ranged from 26.4 ml · kg−1 to 83.6 ml · kg−1 with a mean value of 45.9 (SD 18) ml · kg−1. Considering all the subjects, the t lim was found to have a positive and significant correlation with AOD (r = 0.62, P≤0.05), and a negative and significant correlation with O2 max (r = −0.46, P≤0.05). The data would suggest that the contribution of anaerobic processes during exercise performed at I V˙O2max should not be ignored when t lim is used as a supplementary parameter to evaluate specific adaptation of athletes. The evolution of the extraordinary inflation mechanism of pufferfishes was studied in the light of an independently derived phylogenetic hypothesis of tetraodontiform fishes. Inflation behavior is found in all members of the puffer sister taxa Tetraodontidae and Diodontidae. However, most other tetraodontiform fishes exhibit two functionally similar behaviors. All taxa exhibit a “coughing” behavior and, with the exception of the sister-group to all other tetraodontiforms, represented by the Triacanthidae, all lineages “blow” strong jets of water out of their mouth to excavate prey. Functional specializations associated with the three behaviors were identified from anatomical analyses and electromyographic recordings of muscle activity in representatives of the major lineages of the order. The phylogenetic distribution of the three buccal compression behaviors and their functional bases indicates the following: (1) the evolution of inflation behavior involved major structural modifications of the head that function in a novel mechanism that links depression of the floor of the mouth to posterior expansion of the buccal cavity; (2) the contraction patterns of four key head muscles used in the three behaviors are generally similar both across behaviors and taxa; (3) however, the distribution of the two significant modifications of muscle activity are consistent with the hypothesis that the three behaviors represent a transformation series from coughing to water blowing to inflation. The motor pattern for water blowing is a slightly modified version of that seen in coughing, and the inflation motor pattern retains the blowing specialization and adds a single additional modification. The convergent evolution of a poorly developed inflation behavior in at least one genus of filefish provides evidence that tetraodontiform fishes are predisposed to the evolution of this unusual defensive behavior. The presence of a well developed water-blowing behavior in most tetraodontiform lineages may represent an intermediate functional specialization that increased the probability of the evolution of inflation.  相似文献

Rats were trained to discriminate short or long durations of houselight illumination using a choice procedure. During the test phase of each trial, the left and right levers were presented with an auditory cue above one of them on (cued lever) while the other was off (uncued lever). The auditory cue was presented immediately after sample offset and the levers were inserted after the auditory cue had been presented for 2 s. For half of the rats, the correct response following the short sample was to press the cued lever, while following the long sample, it was to press the uncued lever. This was reversed for the remaining rats. Following acquisition of the discrimination, two different types of delay tests were administered. In the first set, the delay between offset of the sample and onset of the auditory cue was manipulated (Cue Delay Test). In the second set, the delay between onset of the auditory cue and entry of the levers into the chamber was manipulated (Response Delay Test). Cue Delay testing resulted in a choose-long bias at the longer delays. Response Delay testing did not result in a systematic response bias and there was little forgetting over the delay interval. These data suggest that the rats did not stop the internal clock when the nominal sample was offset, but allowed it to keep running until the auditory cue was presented. The data from the Response Delay Test indicate that either a response decision was made based on the clock reading as soon as the auditory cue was presented, or the clock reading itself was retained over the delay with no subjective shortening and little forgetting.  相似文献

 Over the past century, overgrazing and drought in New Mexico’s Jornada Basin has promoted the replacement of native black grama (Bouteloua eriopoda Torr.) grass communities by shrubs, primarily mesquite (Prosopis glandulosa Torr.). We investigated the effects of shrub expansion on the distribution, origin, turnover, and quality of light (LFC) and heavy (HFC) soil organic matter (SOM) fractions using δ13C natural abundance to partition SOM into C4 (grass) and C3 (shrub) sources. Soil organic matter beneath grasses and mesquite was isotopically distinct from associated plant litter, providing evidence of both recent shrub expansion and Holocene plant community changes. Our δ13C analyses indicated that SOM derived from mesquite was greatest beneath shrub canopies, but extended at least 3 m beyond canopy margins, similar to the distribution of fine roots. Specific 14C activities of LFC indicated that root litter is an important source of SOM at depth. Comparison of turnover rates for surface LFC pools in grass (7 or 40 years) and mesquite (11 or 28 years) soils and for HFC pools by soil depth (∼150–280 years), suggest that mesquite may enhance soil C storage relative to grasses. We conclude that the replacement of semiarid grasslands by woody shrubs will effect changes in root biomass, litter production, and SOM cycling that influence nutrient availability and long-term soil C sequestration at the ecosystem level. Studies were conducted at the La Selva Biological Station in the Atlantic lowlands of Costa Rica and in a greenhouse in California to assess the potential role of a Neotropical fish in dispersing the seeds of a rain forest tree. Feeding experiments showed that the seeds of Ficus glabrata H. B. K., a major, canopy-forming riparian tree, require approximately 18–36 h to pass through the digestive tract of Brycon guatemalensis Regan, an abundant riverine fish whose adult diet consists largely of leaves and fruits of this fig tree. The seeds were still viable after passing through the fish’s gut but germinated somewhat more slowly than seeds that had been left in the fig exposed to air or floated in water. Stem elongation of seedlings from seeds that had passed through the fish’s gut was faster than that of seeds in the other two treatments. Placement of seeds upstream may be more important than enhanced germination for plants such as Ficus that produce large numbers of seeds. Radio telemetry showed that five of six tagged fish had moved distances of 0.1–1 km upstream; seven other fish with transmitters, including three large males, were not relocated and may have moved into tributary streams for spawning or feeding. A series of work by the first author have demonstrated that many macaque species show a visual preference for the pictures of their own species when the monkeys actively press a lever to see the pictures. We expanded this study to Sulawesi macaques kept as a pet by local people with slight modification. All seven species of Sulawesi macaques were passively exposed to a variety of colored slides of Sulawesi macaques. The experimenter recorded the duration of visual fixation onto the pictures. Male monkeys of all the seven species clearly watched the pictures of their own species for longer duration than those of the other species. Such visual preference suggested that the seven Sulawesi macaques discriminate each other species and, thus, they may not be integrated into fewer number of species. This visual preference may work to prevent overall intergradation of the Sulawesi macaques who sometimes have hybrid zones only in limited areas. This preference was in general weaker in female monkeys. In one species,Macaca ochreata, females actively avoided to see the pictures of conspecifics. These results may be related to how female monkeys interact with other individuals.  相似文献

 Low-temperature-sensitive sterility (LTSS) has become one of the major obstacles in indica-japonica hybrid rice breeding. In this study, we determined, using RFLP markers, the genetic basis of LTSS in two populations derived from crosses between indica and japonica parents, the BC1F1 of 3037/02428//3037 and the F2 of 3037/02428. The fertility segregation in the two populations under low-temperature conditions was used as a measurement of the temperature sensitivity of the various genotypes in the populations. A RFLP survey of bulked extremes from the BC1F1 population identified three genomic regions, two on chromosome 1 and one on chromosome 12, that were likely to contain genes for LTSS (or Ste loci). One-way ANOVA and QTL analysis using a total of 19 markers from these three genomic regions resolved three Ste loci in the BC1F1 population and two Ste loci in the F2 population. On the basis of chromosomal location these loci were distinct from those governing wide-compatibility identified in previous studies. Two- and three-way ANOVA showed that these loci acted essentially independent of each other in conditioning LTSS. The main mode of gene action was an interaction between the indica and the japonica alleles within each locus. For each respective locus this resulted in a drastic fertility reduction in the heterozygote state relative to the homozygote state. The polychaete worm Serpula vermicularis (Serpulidae) filterfeeds at the mouth of its calcareous tube, but retreats intothe tube when startled by mechanical stimuli likely to be associatedwith predators. While in its tube, a worm is safe but cannotfeed. Thus, hiding has a lost-opportunity cost. We show thatthis cost can be substantial, given that food in the naturalhabitat appears in pulses, and good feeding conditions may notlast long or recur frequently. We expect that a worm's hidingtime will be sensitive to the lost-opportunity cost, and wepresent data from a series of experiments that support thisprediction. The worms seem able to track relatively short-termchanges in food availability, and some evidence suggests thatthey assess food availability on a relative basis, comparingcurrent feeding conditions to those recently experienced. Hidingand other types of cryptic behavior are common antipredatortactics, and animals may commonly adjust the durations of suchbehaviors to current benefits and costs (including lost opportunity),as they perceive them  相似文献

对杂交水稻常规水稻在结实期间剑叶和谷粒中的蔗糖含量的变化,穗上不同部位的结实情况,实粒率和千粒重的动态变化以及它们之间的关系,结实率对有机营养供应变化的反应等方面进行了比较研究。结果表明,杂交水稻结实率较低主要是由于穗的中、下部尤其是稳下部出现较多的秕粒造成的;与常规水稻比较,杂交水稻在灌浆的前中期,剑叶和籽粒中的蔗糖含量高,籽粒增重快,后期则相反;穗上部和下部的结实率和千粒重皆差异大;在实粒增加过程中,千粒重与常规水稻相同时,实粒率低,在灌浆后期,实粒率对有机营养应给的变化较敏感,早、晚季及“库”“源”关系变化时,结实率和千粒重的变化幅度大。本文还对杂交水稻结实率较低和较不稳定的原因进行了探讨。  相似文献
