Physical growth and development of children, determined by endogenous factors (genetic and paragenetic) is modified by numerous exogenic ones. This affects differentiation of ways of growth in individual children. In order to estimate the individual growth patterns and changes in growth rate as well as differences in growth of boys and girls, one must observe the process of growth of the same children and over a period of many years (longitudinal study). Aim We examined whether variation in species composition of breeding birds and resident butterflies in the Great Basin of North America depended on sampling grain (the smallest resolvable unit of study) and on the relative proximity of sampling units across the landscape. We also compared patterns between the two taxonomic groups with reference to their life‐history characteristics. Location Data for our analyses were collected from 1996 to 2003 in three adjacent mountain ranges in the central Great Basin (Lander and Nye counties, Nevada, USA): the Shoshone Mountains, Toiyabe Range and Toquima Range. Methods Data on species composition for both taxonomic groups were collecting using standard inventory methods for birds and butterflies in temperate regions. Data were compiled at three sampling grains, sites (average 12 ha), canyons (average 74 ha) and mountain ranges. For each sampling grain in turn, we calculated similarity of species composition using the Jaccard index. First, we investigated whether mean similarity of species composition among the three ranges differed as a function of the grain size at which data were compiled. Secondly, we explored whether mean similarity of species composition was greater for canyons within the same mountain range than for canyons within different mountain ranges. Thirdly, we examined whether mean similarity of species composition at the site level was different for sites within the same canyon, sites within different canyons in the same mountain range, and sites within canyons in different mountain ranges. We used a Bayesian model to analyse these comparisons. Results For both taxonomic groups, mean similarity of species composition increased as the sampling grain increased. The effect of spatial grain was somewhat greater for birds than for butterflies, especially when the intermediate sampling grain was compared with the smallest sampling grain. Similarity of species composition of butterflies at each sampling grain was greater than similarity of species composition of birds at the same grain. Mean similarity of species composition of both birds and butterflies at the canyon level and site level was affected by relative proximity of sampling locations; beta diversity increased as the relative isolation of sampling locations increased. Main conclusions The sensitivity of beta diversity to sampling grain likely reflects the effect of local environmental heterogeneity: as sampling grain increases, biotic assemblages appear more homogeneous. Although breeding birds in our study system have larger home ranges than resident butterflies, birds may have more specialized resource requirements related to vegetation structure and composition, especially at small sampling scales. The degree of variation in species composition of both taxonomic groups suggests that spatially extensive sampling will be more effective for drawing inferences about regional patterns of species diversity than intensive sampling at relatively few, smaller sites.  相似文献

The potential impacts of changes in precipitation patterns associated with global climate change on the relationship between soil community diversity and litter decomposition were investigated. For a period of ca. 5 months, two decomposer communities in litterbags (1000 and 45 μm mesh size) containing spruce litter were subjected to two irrigation treatments: constant and fluctuating (drying/rewetting) moisture conditions. The latter were expected to induce moisture stress on the decomposer communities. The two mesh sizes were used to exclude different faunal components from the decomposer communities. The 1000 μm mesh excluded only the macrofauna, whereas the 45 μm mesh excluded both the macro- and mesofauna. In the short-term perspective of the present study, mesofauna abundance showed no response to imposed fluctuating moisture conditions. Irrespective of the presence of mesofauna, mass loss, microbial biomass and the control mechanisms, regulating carbon mineralization appeared unaffected by fluctuating moisture conditions. The reduction in the functional/structural diversity of the decomposer communities in the 45 μm litterbags resulted in strongly increased Nematoda abundance but it did not alter the response of Nematoda to fluctuating moisture conditions. Processes in the nitrogen (N)-cycle and mass loss were sensitive indicators of changes in the structural and functional complexity of decomposer communities. However, a negative effect of fluctuating moisture conditions on extractable N was coupled to the presence of mesofauna. Extremes in rainfall patterns, generated by climate change, may have a negative impact on the availability of nutrients, particularly N, for plants. This effect could be amplified by an additional impoverishment in the structural and functional complexity of the respective decomposer communities.  相似文献

We studiedMacaca sylvanus populations from a) a protected, relatively undamaged climax Cedar forest and b) a degraded, mixed Cedar-Oak forest. Animals exhibit considerable differences in demographic, social and time budget characteristics. In the degraded forest there were fewer social groups of smaller average group size and lower population density. Differences in habitat quality, patchiness and intensity of human activities between the two localities are reflected in macaque activity patterns. In the degraded forest the animals allocate less time to feeding, foraging (clumped food resources, smaller group sizes) and Vigilance (more habituated to human presence). They allocate more time to resting and they are involved more frequently in grooming (probably an indication of social tension within groups). In contrary social structures and wild stock, population is declining.  相似文献

Faces of lesion nematodes Pratylenchus teres (populations RTB and JK) and P. zeae or the bacterivore Distolabrellus veechi were observed on frozen specimens with low-temperature scanning electron microscopy and as chemically fixed, critical-point dried specimens with conventional scanning electron microscopy. Amphidial secretions were preserved in chemically fixed but not cryofixed lesion nematodes. Overhanging liplets of chemically fixed D. veechi may be artifactual because they appeared as variably filled, mostly empty membranes when cryofixed. The diagnostically useful lips of the frozen lesion nematodes exhibited six sectors of variable prominence that were absent in chemically fixed specimens. This variability may be due to different degrees of muscle contraction captured during cryofixation, which occurs in milliseconds. This is the first evidence that rarely observed lip sectors in Pratylenchus may be something other than an artifact of shrinkage.  相似文献

Abstract A population of Hemideina crassidens (the Wellington tree weta) was monitored over a 4‐year period after the eradication of Rattus exulans (the Polynesian rat kiore) and Gallirallus australis australis (the South Island weka) from Nukuwaiata (Chetwode Islands), Pelorus Sound, New Zealand. A novel survey technique (entrance scores) was used in combination with a conventional technique (random searches for active weta) to measure changes in weta population parameters after the removal of predation pressure and to investigate impacts of exotic predators on tree weta. Tree weta density did not increase markedly over the 4‐year period, but the proportion of active adults did increase. Weta were observed to move into larger and more crowded galleries (refuges), to occupy galleries closer to the ground, and to spend less time sitting in gallery entrances. It was concluded that endemic tree weta are well adapted to withstand some introduced vertebrate predators but are able to live a more “relaxed” lifestyle in the absence of this predation. The most significant change detected was in weta age structure, with adults increasing their proportion of the population.  相似文献

Hydraulic properties of two constructed wetland–ponds in agricultural watersheds in southern Finland were examined by simulations with two-dimensional hydrodynamic and water quality transport models. Hydraulic efficiency was determined for the existing and hypothetical layouts of both wetlands to find out the effects of different design options. Suspended sediment retention in the wetlands was simulated with a two-dimensional model for sediment transport. Hydraulic efficiency was found to be highly improved by baffles that direct the main flow to optimally exploit the wetland acreage. Also, an elongated shape of wetland appeared beneficial; hydraulic efficiency was high regardless of the size or position of the inlet. As for suspended sediment retention, the wetland area in relation to its watershed proved to be an essential factor. According to water quality observations, the wetland which occupied 5% of its watershed area was capable of reducing the inflow of total suspended solids (TSS) concentrations during flood events by 43–72%, whereas the reduction varied between −7 and 5% in the other wetland with a corresponding ratio of 0.5%. Model simulations of the same flood events plausibly predicted the output TSS concentrations, even though with wider ranges of the reductions (26 to 74 and −13 to 43%, respectively).  相似文献
