We consider a mathematical model of mesoscopic human cortical ictal electrical activity. We compare the model results with
ictal electrocortical data recorded from three human subjects and show how the two agree. We determine that, in the model
system, seizures result from increased connectivity between excitatory and inhibitory cell populations, or from decreased
connectivity within either excitatory or inhibitory cell populations. We compare the model results with the disinhibition
and 4-AP models of epilepsy and suggest how the model may guide the development of new anticonvulsant therapies. 相似文献

Root extract from Pelargonium sidoides DC is used therapeutically as antimicrobial agent against infections of the respiratory system. In order to elucidate possible modes of actions we investigated the influence of P. sidoides root extract on microbial adhesion with Helicobacter pylori as model microorganism, a germ with a strong adherence to human stomach tissue. In an in-situ anti-adhesion assay intact human stomach tissue from patient resectates was incubated with fluorescent-labelled bacteria. Epithelial adhesion occurred in untreated samples and was quantified by fluorescent microscopy. Pre-treatment of the bacteria with Pelargonium extract showed good anti-adhesive activity. The antiadhesive effect was clearly dose-dependent in a range from 0.001 to 10 mg/ml. Within agar diffusion-test the extract had no direct cytotoxicity against H. pylori. The results show that the root extract from Pelargonium sidoides is a potent anti-adhesive agent against H. pylori and could therefore be a useful choice to avoid the first step of a bacterial infection. 相似文献

Fetal and early post-natal development of the human spleen: from primordial arterial B cell lobules to a non-segmented organ 总被引:2,自引:2,他引:0
Immunohistological analysis of 31 human spleens from the 11th week of gestation to the early postnatal period suggested that
fetal organ development may be preliminarily divided into four stages. At stage 0 the organ anlage contained erythrocyte precursors,
few macrophages and almost no lymphocytes. Fetal spleens of stage I exhibited arterial vascular lobules and lymphocytes just
began colonizing the organ. At stage II, B and T lymphocytes formed periarteriolar clusters. B cell clusters predominated,
because B cells aggregated around the more peripheral branches of splenic arterioles, while T cells occupied the more centrally
located parts of the vessels. The vascular lobules of stage I and II consisted of central arterioles surrounded by B cells,
capillaries and peripheral venules. The lobular architecture slowly dissolved at late stage II when sinuses grew out from
the peripheral venules into the centre of the lobule. Interestingly, the B cell accumulations around peripheral arterioles
did not represent the precursors of follicles, but apparently persisted as periarteriolar B cell clusters in the adult splenic
red pulp, while follicles containing FDCs developed at late stage II from B cells in direct contact to T cell clusters around
larger arterial vessels. At stage III before birth the lobular architecture was no longer recognized. The chemokine CXCL13
was already present in vascular smooth muscle and adjacent stromal cells at stage I before B cells immigrated. CCL21, on the
contrary, was only demonstrated in fibroblast-like cells supporting T cell clusters from stage II onwards. 相似文献

Development of salivary glands is a highly complex and dynamic process termed branching morphogenesis, where branched structures differentiate into mature glands. Tight junctions (TJ) are thought to play critical roles in physiological functions of tubular organs, contributing to cell polarity and preventing lateral movement of membrane proteins. Evidence demonstrated that claudins are directly involved in TJ formation and function. Using immunohistochemistry and immunofluorescence we have mapped the distribution of claudins-1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7 and 11 and compared it with the expression of differentiation markers in human salivary glands obtained from foetuses ranging from weeks 4 to 24 of gestation. Expression of all claudins, except claudin-2 was detected in the various phases of human salivary gland development, up to fully mature salivary gland. The expression of all claudins increased according to the progression of salivary gland maturation evidenced by the classical markers-cytokeratin 14, cytokeratin low molecular weight, smooth muscle actin and human secretory component. Tight junction proteins-claudins appear to be important in the final shape and physiological functions of human salivary glands and are parallel related with markers of salivary gland differentiation. 相似文献

Pollen map data at 2000-year intervals are used to reconstruct changes in Holocene forest cover in China north of the Yangtze
River. In almost all regions, the early Holocene from 10 ka b.p. to 6 ka b.p. is characterised by an increase in forest cover although there was a reversal to lower forest cover at 8 ka b.p. in the eastern monsoon regions. A maximum of forest cover was reached at 6 ka b.p. in all regions except for Northeast China where forest cover peaked in the late Holocene. All regions except for Northeast
China experienced a marked decline in forest cover after 6 ka b.p. Since 6 ka b.p., forest cover has decreased by about 92% in the middle and lower reaches of the Yellow River, 64% in the easternmost part
of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and 37% between the Yangtze River and the Huaihe River. In contrast, forest cover in Northeast
China increased significantly from 6 ka b.p., but has declined between 2 ka b.p. and the present. Changes in forest cover prior to 6 ka b.p. were probably caused by climate, but the evident drop in forest cover since that time in most regions may have been induced

1 An appraisal of non‐native invertebrate plant pest establishments in Great Britain, between 1970 and 2004, was carried out to improve our understanding of current invasion processes by non‐native plant pests, and to assist national strategies in managing the risks they pose. 2 A total of 164 establishments, comprising 50 natural colonists and 114 human‐assisted introductions, were recorded across 13 major taxonomic groups. 3 The mean rate of establishment was 22.1 species per 5‐year period: 19.1 and 3.0 species outside and inside protected cultivation, respectively. Despite the continuing rapid growth in international trade and a general perception that rates of pest invasions are accelerating, no significant temporal trends in the rate of establishments in Great Britain were detected, either for natural colonists or human‐assisted introductions, or for pests of plants grown indoors or outside. 4 The plant trade, particularly in ornamental plants, accounted for nearly 90% of human‐assisted introductions; apiculture, biological control, timber imports, transport stowaways and intentional releases each contributed less than 5%. Only eight (4.9%) of the establishments could be considered as having no direct potential economic impact because all other species have been recorded as feeding on cultivated plants. A greater proportion of establishments by both natural colonists and human‐assisted introductions occurred on non‐native, woody plants. 5 The present study confirms previous work in other European countries that highlight the predominant role of the ornamental plant trade in introducing new plant pests to the European continent, mainly from Asia and North America. 相似文献

In bioarchaeological contexts, a complex relationship exists between infant representation in the age-at-death distribution, gestational and young child mortality rates, and the total fertility rate. The representation of infants in a skeletal sample may be influenced by a range of social, biological, and archaeological factors. To better understand the interactions between representation, fertility, and mortality, this study evaluates the relationship between infant-juvenile age-at-death proportions, fertility rates, and a range of gestational and early childhood mortality measures. The statistical component of this study found the correlation between fertility rates and infant-juvenile proportions was stronger than with any mortality rate variable of interest. This suggests that the proportion of infants in a mortuary sample is a stronger indicator of fertility than it is of infant-juvenile mortality. Social, biological, and archaeological variables potentially influencing infant representation in skeletal samples are discussed and a strongly contextualized and holistic approach to infant and juvenile mortality is recommended. 相似文献

Early discover of risk progression of invisible carcinomas is important for a prerequisite successful treatment. Here, we investigated whether concentration of human thymidine kinase 1 (HTK1) discover invisible malignant human tumours. The HTK1 concentration of tumour cellular based on HTK1 IgY-polyclonal-antibody (HTK1-IgY-pAb) was determined by using a novel automatic chemiluminescence analyser with sandwich biotin-streptavidin (SBSA) platform. Minimum number of cells able to be detected by this technology used cells with low and high concentration of HTK1. The limit visibility by tumour imaging is approximately 1 mm in diameter, corresponding to approximately 109 cells with a cell diameter of 1 µm. Based on a HTK1 standard curve and a molecular weight of HTK1 of 96 kD, the HTK1protein (HTK1p) concentration per cell was calculated to be 0.021 pg. Assuming 200 pg in total protein/cell, approximately 50 × 106 growing malignant cells in the body were calculated to releases HTK1 into 5-liter blood. A HTK1 values of 3.914, 0.435 and 0.009 pmol/L corresponds to 10 × 105, 2 × 105 and 1 × 105 growing malignant cells, respectively. The lowest detectable sensitivity of HTK1 is 0.009 pmol/L in 1 × 105 growing malignant cells and 0.01 pmol/L in blood serum, detectable in health screening. Comparing the novel automatic chemiluminescence analyser with the original ECL dot-blot assay using serum HTK1p (health screening, n = 265) showed high correlation (r = 0.8743, P < .000). In conclusion, the novel automatic chemiluminescence analyser with SBSA platform is a reliable method with high accuracy to determine carcinoma invisible. 相似文献

Cadmium (Cd) is considered a toxic heavy metal; nevertheless, its toxicity fluctuates for different organisms. Cadmium-tolerant bacteria (CdtB) are diverse and non-phylogenetically related. Because of their ecological importance these bacteria become particularly relevant when pollution occurs and where human health is impacted. The aim of this review is to show the significance, culturable diversity, metabolic detoxification mechanisms of CdtB and their current uses in several bioremediation processes applied to agricultural soils. Further discussion addressed the technological devices and the possible advantages of genetically modified CdtB for diagnostic purposes in the future. 相似文献
