Electroretinograms were recorded from the horseshoe crab compound eye using a high-intensity light-emitting diode and a whole-eye seawater electrode. Recordings were made from both lateral eyes in natural daylight or in continuous darkness with the optic nerve intact or cut. Recordings from two eyes of the same animal in different conditions facilitated direct comparisons of the effects of diurnal lighting and circadian efferent activity on the daily patterns of sensitivity of the eye. Structural changes appear to account for about half of the total electroretinogram excursion. Circadian input begins about 45 min in advance of sunset and the nighttime sensitivity returns to the daytime values 20 min after sunrise. When the optic nerve is cut, the nighttime sensitivity shows exponential decay over the next 5 or 6 days, consistent with a light-triggered structural light adaptation process unopposed by efferent input. Our results suggest that two mechanisms mediate the increase in lateral eye sensitivity at night—physiological dark adaptation and circadian efferent input. Three mechanisms appear to be involved in mediating the decrease in lateral eye sensitivity during daylight—physiological light adaptation, a continuous structural light adaptation process, and a separate light-triggered, efferent-primed structural light adaptation process.  相似文献

Only one study has shown that a hydroid-colonized gastropod shell was a deterrent to predation on hermit crabs. In the present study, the hydroid-colonized shell protected the hermit crab Paguruspollicaris Say from the shell-crushing stone crab Menippe mercenaria (Say) and the non-shell-crushing octopus Octopus joubini Robson. The shell-crushing calico crab Hepatus epheliticus (Johansson) was not deterred, however, by a hydroid-colonized shell.  相似文献

Cholesterol is the obligate precursor for ecdysteroid hormone synthesis by the ecdysial glands (Y-organs) in crustaceans, and all cholesterol in the hemolymph is bound to high-density lipoprotein (HDL). The mechanism was studied of how Y-organ cells acquire cholesterol. Y-organ segments were incubated with HDL isolated from hemolymph and labeled with 125I. After incubation, tissue was homogenized in acid to determine radioactivity in acid-precipitable (cell associated, intact) HDL and in acid-soluble (degraded) HDL. Both HDL uptake and degradation showed saturation kinetics. At saturation most of the total counts represented degraded HDL; by 3 h, degradation was 80%. Rates of HDL uptake and breakdown were higher in Y-organs from de-eyestalked crabs (deprived thereby of molt-inhibiting hormone, MIH) than in glands from intact crabs. Both parameters were depressed by inhibitors of glycolysis and oxidative phosphorylation dose dependently and by low temperature. HDL uptake also was depressed by cAMP added to the medium experimentally or through efflux from the tissue during incubation. These results indicate a mechanism for HDL uptake that entails receptor-mediated, energy-dependent endocytosis of the entire HDL-cholesterol complex. Also the results suggest that HDL uptake and degradation are mediated by cAMP and depressed by an eyestalk factor, presumably MIH. © 1995 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

Quite different ultrastructural changes were observed in the columnar cell and the goblet cell of the silkworm midgut after administration of the crystalline toxin of Bacillus thuringiensis. Shortly after the ingestion of the toxin, the deep infoldings of the basal cell membrane of some columnar cells became very irregular in shape and the mitochondria near the basal region were transformed into a condensed form. A few goblet cells showed relatively high electron density in the cytoplasm. The earliest pathological changes were slight and located in a region lying between the first and second thirds of the midgut. With the passage of time, they spread anteriorly and posteriorly to include the entire anterior two thirds of the midgut and became more profound. The cytoplasm of columnar cells became very electron transparent. Most mitochondria were transformed into a condensed form and the endoplasmic reticulum assumed a vacuole-like configuration. The basal infoldings of the cell membrane almost disappeared. On the other hand, the cytoplasm of the goblet cells became very electron dense and granular. The clear basal infoldings of the cell membrane were enlarged making a striking contrast with the dense cytoplasm. However, the mitochondria and the endoplasmic reticulum did not show any pathological deformation.  相似文献

Summary The activity of carbonic anhydrase (CA), which catalyses the equilibrium CO2H++HCO 3 - , was investigated in various tissues implicated in the excretion of CO2 by Birgus latro. Carbonic anhydrase was detected in the water-soluble fraction of gill tissue but also occurred in association with lipids (membrane bound). This is consistent with a CO2 excretory role and an ion regulation function for the gills. In the lungs (branchial chamber lining) CA activity was found in the membrane bound fraction but was not detected in the soluble fraction, suggesting that the lung CA is not important for ion regulation. The specific CA activity of gill tissue homogenate (A=1.8±0.7·mg-1) was higher than that measured for lung homogenates (A=0.4±0.2·mg-1), but when the whole organ was considered the total CA activity in the lungs was not significantly different from total CA activity in the gills. In comparison to aquatic and amphibious crustaceans the specific activity of carbonic anhydrase in the lungs was high (25% cf. gill activity). This CA activity in the lungs could be correlated with significant CO2 excretion by the lungs. CA may be retained in the branchial tissue as an adjunct to ion reabsorption by the gills.  相似文献

The electrophysiological properties of immature and mature oocytes of two crabs were analyzed. Growing immature oocytes of Carcinus maenas and fully grown immature oocytes of Maia squinado had essentially K+ dependent resting potentials, Em, of ?61 ? 1 mV, n=19, and ?67.3 ± 0.5 mV, n=68, respectively. Fully grown immature oocytes of Carcinus maenas showed an Em of ?40 ± 1.5 mV, n=19, that was k+ and Cl? dependent. In mature oocytes of both species, the plasma membrane became exclusively permeable to cl? and the Em attained–41 ± 1 mV, n=49 and ?34 ± 1.5 mV, n=27 for Carcinus maenas and Maia squinado, respectively. After in vitro insemination, a dramatic increase in egg membrane permeability to K+ was observed. This instantaneously caused a sustained hyperpolarization constituting, for these crabs, the fertilization potential. We observed that concurrently with this electrical response to fertilization, sperm reinitiated the oocyte meiotic maturation previously arrested at the first metaphase. The triggering mechanism of the fertilization potential as well as the possible occurrence of a physiological polyspermy are discussed.  相似文献

Flood intensity was a main factor determining access to the riparian/floodplain ecotonal resources of the upper Parana River, Brazil, and in consequence determining yield of the dominant trophic groups, which are fish feeding on flooded grasslands and on riparian fruits and leaves. Prey and predator density both declined in years of low floods, and predators did not recover until the next year of high flood, more slowly than in the case prey fish, most probably due to differences in life cycle length. The life cycle of one of the most important species, Curimba (Prochilodus lineatus — Characidae) depends on access to the floodplain lagoons and return to the reservoir after maturation for intensive growth. The riparian/floodplain habitat complexity and connectivity has great significance for fish community dynamics and fisheries yield, and may serve a reason to create a national park in the last floodplain section of the upper Parana River.  相似文献

In the sessile hermit crab Discorsopagurus schmitti, four different feeding techniques are described: antennary beating, body-trap feeding, feeding on wafting particles, and scraping. This species' potential for being a generalist in its diet and opportunistic in its foraging behavior certainly opened the way for a sedentary life, allowing occupation of the unusual microhabitat provided by attached polychaete tubes. Nonetheless, deposit-feeding and/or browsing are the most conspicuous foraging strategies, when both the percentage of behavioral acts performed and the quantity of potential food collected are estimated. The question still remains of whether species' reliance on benthos as the main food source should be regarded as an efficient strategy for a sedentary life, or simply as the heritage of its not-so-remote past as a mobile, and shell-dwelling hermit crab.  相似文献

Abstract A study in the Bangladesh Sundarbans forest observed the impact of crabs on mangrove regeneration. Crabs were not found to cause any damage to the seedlings of experimental plots. In addition, no morphological damage attributable to crabs was observed in Rhizophora propagules collected from the forest floor. Protozoan and hydrozoan epibionts on the hermit crab Pagurus bernhardus and its shell, collected near Cumbrae Island (Scotland) were studied. The epibionts found were the following: (1) protozoans: the suctorian ciliates Ephelota plana, Acineta compressa, Conchacineta constricta, Corynophrya anisostyla; the peritrich ciliates Cothurnia mobiusi and Zoothamnium plumula; the chonotrich ciliate Chilodochona quennerstedti; and (2) hydrozoans: the species Leuckartiara sp. and Clytia sp. The morphological characteristics of the epibionts were analysed, as well as their taxonomic position. The distribution of epibionts on the crab surface and its shell was studied, and the density and biomass of epibionts were calculated on each anatomic unit. There was a differential distribution according to the type of epibiont: hydrozoans dominated in biovolume and were present mainly on the shell, meanwhile protozoans represented the highest fraction of density and they were found exclusively on the crab (principally on eyes, antennulae, antennae, maxillipeds, pereopods and uropods). The anterior area of the cephalothorax was the most colonized. On this area, the maxillipeds and second pereopods showed the highest densities. The location of each epibiont species was described. There was a correlation between the length of the crab and the total number of hydrozoans. There was a significant correlation between the right and the left units of the crab, taking into consideration the mean densities of epibionts on each anatomical unit. The shell was colonized by the same species of hydrozoa that appeared on the crab, although in a much higher density (mean 3024.38 per shell; 6.9 per crab). There was a significant difference between both species of hydrozoan epibionts with respect to the mean densities on the different areas of the shell. The zone of the shell more occupied by Clytia sp. was the apical zone of the shell, while the highest densities of Leuckartiara sp. were registered near the aperture of the shell. The hydrozoan and protozoan epibiont species found on P. bernhardus in this study represent the first mention of their presence on this hermit crab.  相似文献
