A phylogenetic analysis of P transposable elements in the Drosophila obscura species group is described. Multiple P sequences from each of 10 species were obtained using PCR primers that flank a conserved region of exon 2 of the transposase gene. In general, the P element phylogeny is congruent with the species phylogeny, indicating that the dominant mode of transmission has been vertical, from generation to generation. One manifestation of this is the distinction of P elements from the Old World obscura and subobscura subgroups from those of the New World affinis subgroup. However, the overall distribution of elements within the obscura species group is not congruent with the phylogenetic relationships of the species themselves. There are at least four distinct subfamilies of P elements, which differ in sequence from each other by as much as 34%, and some individual species carry sequences belonging to different subfamilies. P sequences from D. bifasciata are particularly interesting. These sequences belong to two subfamilies and both are distinct from all other P elements identified in this survey. Several mechanisms are postulated to be involved in determining phylogenetic relationships among P elements in the obscura group. In addition to vertical transmission, these include retention of ancestral polymorphisms and horizontal transfer by an unknown mating-independent mechanism.  相似文献

Summary The processes of horizontal cells invaginating teleost cone pedicles are studded with small finger-like projections which are present only in the light-adapted state. The aim of this study was to investigate whether the formation and degradation of these so-called spinules, which are thought to function as feed-back synapses onto the cones, is endogenously controlled.Three types of experiment were carried out involving fish entrained to a 12 h light/dark cycle: 1) The number of spinules was determined in goldfish at various times during exposure to either constant darkness (36 h) or constant light (57 h). 2) The time course of spinule formation and degradation in goldfish was investigated following exposure to light or darkness at various times during the light/dark cycle. 3) The time course of flash-induced spinule formation in tench following dark adaptation at noon was compared to that following dark adaptation at midnight.The results of these experiments show that spinule formation and degradation are partially under endogenous control but that they need light for full expression. This endogenous rhythm is reflected in the time courses of spinule formation and breakdown during different phases of the light/dark cycle.  相似文献

Summary The relative importance of various components (latent period, uredium area, infectious period, infectibility, sporulation and weather) affecting the progress of leaf rust (Puccinia recondita) in wheat, in the field, was determined by calculating the effect of equivalent changes in the individual components. The effect was calculated in terms of the period of delay in the epidemic reaching 100 per cent severity of leaf rust. Only four components viz., latent period, infectibility, sporulation and weather were found to be important. Further, it was found that these four components were equally important and that they collectively determined the rate of progress of leaf rust in an additive manner.  相似文献

Synopsis Seven hundred and thirty seven eel larvae were caught in 1971 and in the period 1973–1977 by a modified Isaacs Kidd Midwater Trawl off and on the continental shelf west of France and the British Isles. According to Schmidt (1909) no larvae have been caught on the shelf itself except one glass eel. A decrease in number as well as a decrease of older stages from east to west was observed. Besides the maximum in the length frequency distribution some more smaller peaks occurred. No essential size differences existed between 1975 and 1977, between younger and older developmental stages and between northern and southern larvae. Depth preference during daylight was 300–600 m, at night 35–125 m. Mean density of larvae in the preferred depth layers was nearly 1 per 1000 m3. High densities alternated from year to year with low densities which corresponded to the total catch fluctuations of the elver ascent in the River Ems at Herbrum (West Germany) in the following spring. The possible relationships in mortality between the metamorphosing leptocephalus and immigrating elvers and between the emigrating silver eels and the metamorphosing leptocephalus are discussed.  相似文献

Virulence of Metarhizium anisopliae (Metschnikoff) Sorokin strain EAMa 01/121-Su against the German Cockroach, Blatella germanica (L.), was determined using four concentrations ranging from 4.2 x 10(6) to 4.2 x 10(9) spores per milliliter. The LD50 value was 1.4 x 10(7) spores per milliliter (56,000 spores per cockroach) and LT50 values were 14.8 days and 5.3 days for 4.2 x 10(8) and 4.2 x 10(9) spores per milliliter, respectively. An experiment was conducted to evaluate whether a fungal transmission could exist among infected and healthy cockroaches. Percentage mortality at a ratio of 1:10 of infected to unexposed cockroaches was 87.5% and LT50 was 12.2 days, which indicated the potential of this strain to be horizontally transmitted and to rapidly spread the infection in the insect population. The effect of a sublethal dose (ca. LD60) of M. anisopliae EAMa 01/121-Su strain, applied topically on German cockroaches, was studied by reciprocal crossing. Othecal production, oothecal hatchability, and nymphal production declined upon exposure to M. anisopliae EAMa 01/121-Su strain. The mean number of oothecae laid by female was progressively and significantly reduced by fungal treatment from second oviposition period onwards. Oothecal hatch of fungally challenged females was reduced by 46-49%, oothecal viability by 48-85%, and nymphal production by 22-35%. Only treated females showed an effect on oothecal production, oothecal hatch, and nymphal production, although oothecal hatch was also governed by treated males at a higher significance level. Our results on virulence and horizontal transmission of fungal conidia of M. anisopliae EAMa 01/121-Su strain and its sublethal reproductive effects on German cockroach females are discussed in terms of its potential to decrease the pest status of B. germanica in the short and long terms.  相似文献

Abstract

Modern elephants lack permanent premolars and their cheek teeth succeed one another by an unusual horizontal tooth displacement mechanism. The fossil record demonstrates that this mechanism characterises elephantimorph proboscideans and first evolved in the late Oligocene. Horizontal tooth displacement provides elephantimorphs with an adaptive advantage over more primitive proboscideans with vertical tooth replacement and concurrent function of all adult teeth. Premolars were lost convergently in diverse elephantimorph taxa with small or no lower tusks and foreshortened symphyses, including independently in crown elephant genera. New evidence reveals the presence of premolars in early species of Loxodonta and loss of premolars in the Loxodonta clade by the mid-Pliocene. Rare occurrences of premolars in mammoths support the hypothesis that these teeth were lost by suppression of genetic and molecular processes responsible for their development. Retention of premolars in Elephas planifrons indicates independent loss of premolars in Elephas and mammoths, and that Elephas had multiple migrations out of Africa, once pre- and once post-loss of premolars in the genus. Unfortunately, the effects of dwarfing are thought to obscure the phylogenetic affinities of fossil elephants from Sulawesi and Java in the genus Stegoloxodon that retain permanent premolars.  相似文献

The effects of the social environment during development on life-history decisions and adult behaviour were assessed using male guppies Poecilia reticulata . Males raised with adults developed secondary sexual characteristics later than males raised either singly or with four of their siblings indicating social inhibition of maturation was evident in P. reticulata . There was no effect, however, of rearing environment on male behaviour. The results reveal that social environment during development can influence life-history decisions but is less important than immediate social context in determining male behavioural phenotype in P. reticulata .  相似文献
