Summary Short-term absorption experiments were conducted with intact barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) seedlings to observe the effects of the osmotic potential (Ψπ) and salt species on nitrate uptake andin vivo nitrate reduction. The experiments consisted of growing barley seedlings for 5 days in complete nutrient solutions salinized to (Ψπ) levels of −0.6, −1.8, −3.0, −4.2, and −5.4 bars with NaCl, CaCl2 or Na2SO4. After the absorption period, the seedlings were separated into shoots and roots, weighed, then analyzed for NO3. The nutrient solutions were sampled for NO3 analysis each day immediately before renewing the solutions. The accumulative loss of NO3 from the solutions was considered to be uptake whereas NO3 reduction was the difference between uptake and seedling content. Lowering the (Ψπ) of the nutrient solutions resulted in decreased concentrations of NO3 in the plant, little or no effect (except at the lowest (Ψπ) level) on uptake, and increased nitrate reductase activity. Increased rates of NO3 reduction were in particular associated with the Cl concentration of the nutrient solution.  相似文献

Summary Two families each of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) and maize (Zea mays L.) were studied for mitochondrial heterosis and in vitro mitochondrial complementation. Inbred parents and their hybrids were compared for seedling heights and rate of oxygen uptake by the whole tissue to find out if the hybrids showed greater growth and respiratory activity at the seedling stage. Further comparisons were made by isolating mitochondria from the seedling tissues and measuring their ADP0 ratio, respiratory control ratio and cytochrome c oxidase activity for mitochondrial heterosis. Mixtures of parental mitochondria were similarly compared with parental and hybrid mitochondria for in vitro mitochondrial complementation. No evidence for mitochondrial heterosis or in vitro mitochondrial complementation was found, nor any correlation between the different mitochondrial parameters, seedling heights or rates of oxygen uptake by seedling tissue. The suggested use of mitochondrial heterosis and in vitro mitochondrial complementation for plant breeding is discussed.Data for this paper is taken from the author's dissertation written as a part of Ph.D. degree requirements at the Biology Department, Texas A & M University, College Station, Texas  相似文献

Summary The total vegetative node number, rate of node production and number of sprouts over 13 mm diameter were recorded for 10 F1 Brussels sprout cultivars and 45 progenies derived by intercrossing and selfing them. Significant differences, resulting from additive gene action, were found between the 10 cultivars and between their progenies for both characters. For total node number there was also evidence of dominant gene action. Total node number and rate of node production were closely correlated as were total node number and the number of harvested sprouts. The factors causing differences in rate of node production are indicated and the relationship of this character to other Brussels sprout yield components is outlined.  相似文献

The efficacy of oxamyl in controlling Heterodera schachtii on cabbage was determined by applying various contbinations of soil drenches at 6.7 kg (a.i.)/ha and foliar sprays at 0.04 kg (a.i.)/100 liters of water to cabbage seedlings. Pretransplant drenches provided some control of H. schachtii over a 13-week period. A single foliar spray of oxamyl 1 week before transplanting apparently prevented penetration of H. schachtii larvae; post-transplant sprays were relatively ineffective. A pretransplant or transplant drench combined with a foliar application 2 weeks after transplanting provided the most effective control. The effectiveness of drenches plus post-transplant sprays is probably due to the spray augmenting the action of the drench in inhibiting the development of larvae after penelration.  相似文献

In barley seedlings (Hordeum vulgare L.) during two days after irradiation of shoots with UV-B (0.5 W/m2, 6 h), the rate of elongation of primary roots decreased 2–3 times compared to that in control plants. The modulus of elasticity of roots (ε) increased at most twofold in 12 h after the onset of irradiation; the hydraulic conductivity (L p) diminished by a factor of two in 12 h, and the root osmotic pressure gradually decreased by 0.08 MPa in 24 h. Changes in ε and L p were shown to be related to oxidative stress in growing roots, which was evidenced from the increase in H2O2 level up to 15-fold increase in 6 h and in activity of guaiacol peroxidase (3.5-fold in 12 h). After 48 h, the characteristics of oxidative metabolism and root characteristics ε and L p became identical in untreated and treated plants. On the third day, the rate of root growth in treated plants reached its initial value. It is concluded that the main causes of retardation of root growth under these conditions were as follows: the increase in cell wall rigidity related to formation of oxidative cross-links in the apoplast and the decrease in root osmotic pressure due to limited transport of assimilates from irradiated leaves. After the intensity of UV-B irradiation applied to shoots was enhanced (1.6 W/m2, 4 h), another physiological status of roots was observed on the 2nd day characterized by twofold increase in L p, tenfold decreased root elongation rate, and by a progressing increase of root diameter in growing roots. The comparison of root responses induced by irradiation of shoots with the root responses to sodium salicylate and ABA suggests that both agents might participate in the transmission of signals from irradiated leaves to roots.  相似文献

Two groups distinguishable on the basis of crystal serology have been identified within Bacillus thuringiensis var kurstaki (serotype 3 ab). The toxicities of these two groups to Trichoplusia ni and Heliothis virescens expressed as TH ratio also differed. Take-all on turfgrass caused by Gaeumannomyces graminis var. avenae (Gga) occurs as patches of yellowish plants. On some patches the central zone was recolonized by the same grass species, Festuca sp., previously damaged by the fungus despite the centrifugal extension of the disease. This disease remission was assimilated to decline. Rhizosphere bacterial counts showed that total population of bacteria was nearly the same in all zones across the patches. However, the ratio of fluorescent Pseudomonas spp./ total bacteria was 1/22, 1/15.4, 1/3.5 and 1/2.9 in the disease free area, the front margin of the patch, in the damaged part of the patch, and in the recolonized central part respectively. Furthermore, in this last mentioned zone, 44 to 82% of the fluorescent Pseudomonas spp. were antagonistic in vitro to Gga, whereas only 12 to 34% from the disease free area were antagonistic. So the development of take-all on turf induced quantitative and qualitative changes in populations of fluorescent pseudomonads. The remission of the disease in the center was correlated to higher amount of antagonistic fluorescent pseudomonads in this part of the patches. This typical patch with the well defined zones can provide a good model for the study of changes in bacterial populations related to the build up of take-all decline.  相似文献

The effects of the ovarian hormones progesterone and estrone on the conversion of tryptophan to nicotinamide in rats were investigated. Female rats were fed for 35 days with a 20% casein diet, or with a 20% casein diet containing 0.1% progesterone, or 0.001% estrone, or 0.1% progestrone and 0.001% estrone. The conversion ratio of tryptophan to nicotinamide on the last day of the experiment was 2% in the groups fed with the 20% casein diet and the diet containing 0.1% progesterone, but around 1.2% in the group fed with 0.001% estrone, and 0.7% in the group fed with 0.1% progesterone and 0.001% estrone. These results demonstrated that administration of ovarian hormones significantly decreased the conversion of tryptophan to nicotinamide.  相似文献

A chlorophyll deficient mutant of Hordeum vulgare L. was investigated with respect to its transpiration response to light pulses. Broad band blue light. 380–500 nm, caused a significant transpiration response, while broad band red light did not. The transpiration response to changes in the ambient CO2-concentration was the same in the chlorophyll deficient mutant as in green plants. The absence of a transpiration response to red light in the mutant was therefore not the result of a defective CO2-response. It is concluded that the specific blue light response is not mediated via photosynthetic CO2-fixation. The nature of the blue light response is discussed.  相似文献

The short- to medium-term viability and growth of Metarhizium anisopliae var. acridum conidia were investigated when combined with six insecticides, at three different concentrations. All of the insecticides used in this study were suitable for immediate spraying with M. anisopliae var. acridum conidia except for fenitrothion. Fipronil, teflubenzuron, and fenitrothion formulations significantly reduced conidial viability over time. The 10% teflubenzuron treatment caused loss of viability relatively quickly with 9.9% germination after 28 days. Mycelial growth was affected by all the treatments except fenitrothion.  相似文献
