A wide variety of insect species provide pollination services in natural and agricultural ecosystems, but in order to quantify their contribution it is necessary to evaluate their effectiveness. An important component of this is to determine their ability to transfer pollen to stigmas which typically requires observers to wait for insects to visit focal flowers (static approach); a time-consuming process not amenable to obtaining measures for pollinating species of low local abundance. An alternative method (active approach) is to detach test flowers and present them to the targeted flower visitor. This offers a number of advantages (e.g. increased speed and flexibility), but may alter insect behaviour. We compared pollen deposition within flowering onion crops using three bee (Apoidea) and three fly (Diptera) species. The two approaches resulted in similar numbers of pollen grains being deposited onto stigmas for each insect species, thereby supporting the validity of the active as an alternative to the static approach in our test crop. The ability to rapidly assess stigmatic pollen deposition of a broad range of insects using the active approach can greatly assist assessments of pollinator contribution within plant pollinator assemblages.  相似文献

A study on the relationship between the age of comb and the activity of the hybrid Carniolan honey bee colonies in collecting pollen activity, worker brood production, colony strength, and honey yield was conducted. In comparison to colonies with combs aged 4-years, colonies with combs aged 1, 2 and 3-years significantly exceeded in the number returning workers, number returning workers with pollen loads, rate of storing pollen, rate of worker brood production, and size of colony population. Colonies with combs aged 1, 2 and 3-years produced significantly more honey than colonies with combs aged 4-years (5.25, 4.90 and 4.65 kg/colony vs. 4.45 kg/colony, respectively). It can be concluded that the foraging rate, gathering and storing pollen, brood production, colony population size, and honey yield significantly depended on the age of combs. Beekeepers can replace old combs with new ones to increase brood and honey production.  相似文献

It is known that juvenile hormone plays an important role in the regulation of labour division and of the different life spans, and that the microclimate of the bee hive is characterized by its high CO2 concentration and its varying temperature depending on the presence of brood. We have investigated the influence of microclimates characteristic of breeding and broodless areas on the juvenile hormone titre in the haemolymph and whole body extracts, on the corpora allata in vitro activity, on the degradation of juvenile hormone and on the dry weight of the hypopharyngeal glands using bees of known ages. A microclimate of 35°C and 1.5% CO2, as observed in the breeding area, induces a rapid and pronounced increase in the juvenile hormone titre. On the other hand, this titre remains low in bees kept at 27°C and 1.5% CO2, a microclimate associated with broodless combs. Rates of juvenile hormone synthesis by corpora allata in vitro were found to be extremely low, even in the presence of farnesenic acid, and not related to the juvenile hormone titre. In vitro incubation of juvenile hormone in haemolymph revealed no degradation while injected juvenile hormone was found to be degraded and taken up by the gut at rates only weakly correlated with the juvenile hormone titre. We propose a hypothetical model for the regulation of the juvenile hormone titre as well as the course of labour division by the varying microclimates observed in the bee hive.  相似文献

1. Xylocopa virginica virginica Linnaeus is a wide‐ranging species with plastic nesting behaviour that appears to represent an intermediary between solitary and social nesting species. Over 3 years, a natural population was studied with the objective of quantifying the relationship among population dynamics, climate, female nest provisioning behaviour, and male mating strategy. 2. Males in the population congregated around female‐occupied nesting sites before the beginning of nest provisioning by females; both resident and satellite male mating strategies were observed. Overall, the present results are consistent with female defence polygyny. 3. Male mating strategies were consistent across the three breeding seasons of our study, in spite of annual variation in population size, sex ratio, and weather. Male mating behaviour was also consistent with that seen in other populations with longer breeding seasons. 4. Adult non‐breeding females that never leave nests are observed in nests throughout the breeding season and we hypothesise that males continue to defend territories after breeding females have mated because of a small probability they can mate with one of these non‐breeding females. 5. These results are important to our understanding of the relationship between mating systems and the evolution of sociality, contributing data on the role of ecological factors to male mating behaviour. Collection of such data for a variety of species that differ in sociality is necessary for the comparative analysis that is required to fully elucidate coevolution of mating systems and sociality.  相似文献

The only member of the red algal family Solieriaceae known from New Zealand is the endemic Sarcodiotheca colensoi (Hook. & Harv.) Kylin. This study shows that it differs in several respects from the type S. furcata (Setch. & Gard.) Kylin; thus a new genus Placentophora is created for the New Zealand alga. Although P. colensoi nov. comb. is retained in the Solieriaceae on the basis of vegetative, spermatangial, tetrasporangial, carpogonial-branch and early gonimoblast features, it differs from typical members of that family in its pattern of later carposporophyte development. After a single gonimoblast initial is cut off from the auxiliary cell towards the center of the thallus, further gonimoblasts develop from the initial as ramifying, radiating filaments. These filaments enter an extensive “nutritive-cell” region surrounding the auxiliary cell, form, numerous connections to the “nutritive” cells, and incorporate most of them into a central placenta of interconnected, and variously-fused vegetative and gonimoblast cells. Carpo-sporangia then form in short chains around the periphery of the placenta. The cystocarp lacks both a central fusion cell and a sterile-celled investment, or “Faserhülle.” The distinctive carposporophyte of Placentophora is compared to patterns of gonimoblast development, known in other members of the Solieriaceae.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. The fine structure and function of a honey bee's ( Apis mellifera Linn.) proventriculus were studied by scanning electron microscopy and video-recording. Our observations revealed that the proventriculus is used to engulf pollen and other particles which contaminate the nectar carried into the crop. The four lips are closed and opened, pulled backwards and straightened by the external circular muscles and internal longitudinal muscles. Combs of filiform-hairs (70 μm in length) located on the margins of the lips 'catch' and filter particles from the fluid. By repeated filtering, opening and closing actions of the hairs and lips, particles are filtered and collected in pouches between the ventricular folds to form boluses and are eventually passed into the midgut. In the present experiment, particle sizes ranging from 0.5 to 100 μm in diameter, including dandelion pollen ( Taraxacum officinale Web.), Torula yeast ( Candida utilis Lodder et Kreger-Van Rij), bee disease spores of Nosema apis Zander and Bacillus larvae White, and man-made particles can be filtered by the hairs. Small particles (0.23 μm in diameter) filter through the hair and return back to the fluid. Large particles (100–200 μm in diameter) are caught between the stylets of the mouthparts and are not ingested. These observations suggest that the particle size plays an important role in determining what can be taken by the mouthparts and the proventriculus and what can later be utilized as a food source by the bee. The role of the proventriculus in disease transmission is also discussed.  相似文献

Abstract. 1. Foraging patterns were studied using honey bees on artificial flower patches to determine if given individuals could change behaviours under differing conditions.
2. Two types of flower patches were used; those simulating a population of flowers, dimorphic for colour, and grids simulating a single colour-dimorphic inflorescence.
3. In the simulated population of flowers bees were individually constant to colour over a range of reward volumes and flower patch sizes.
4. Each bee remained individually constant to a flower morph when visiting a population-type grid but changed to random visitation on the simulated inflorescence.
5. On the simulated inflorescence, with morphs providing unequal qualities of reward, most bees foraged on the higher molarity morph.
6. Most, but not all bees, failed to minimize uncertainty on the simulated inflorescence.
7. On the simulated inflorescence, bees failed to optimize when one morph provided a greater reward volume than did the other.
8. In the population of flowers bees flew from flower to flower, whereas, they walked on the simulated inflorescence.  相似文献

AHomo erectus individual (KNM-ER 1808) from Koobi Fora, Kenya dating from 1·6 ± 0·1 million years exhibits pathological apposition of bone on long bone shafts. This was originally attributed to hypervitaminosis A from the consumption of carnivore livers. Bee brood has a sufficiently high concentration of vitamin A that protracted ingestion could theoretically produce hypervitaminosis A. The ecology of the East African bee,Apis mellifera scutelatta, is investigated to show that the density of nests with their brood contents within a reasonable foraging area of earlyHomo erectus would yield an ample and reliable energy source with deleteriously high vitamin A content. A potential role of honey gathering and insect larvae consumption in hominine behavioural and physical evolution is discussed.  相似文献

1. Nesting behaviour and interactions between the bee Chelostoma florisomne (L.) (Megachilidae) and its nest parasite Sapyga clavicornis (L.) (Sapygidae) were studied through continual observations of individuals and dissections of bee nests. Protection of bee offspring is based on (1) the bee’s discovery and removal of parasite eggs deposited prior to the construction of a cell closure, (2) minimising the time when fully provisioned cells might be parasitised successfully, and (3) the construction of empty cells in front of brood cells. 2. An empty cell was found in front of 64.4% of all brood cells and, if the outermost brood cell in a nest was excluded, in front of 74.3% of inner brood cells. A vestibule closure is most often constructed in front of the outermost brood cell. 3. Following oviposition, the bee made only five flights, which together lasted 6–13 min, to construct a cell closure. A cell closure does not prevent the nest parasite from oviposition inside the brood cell, however, and parasite eggs deposited through the cell closure are not detected and removed by the bee. Only an additional cell closure, i.e. the formation of an empty cell, may protect a brood cell when the bee is not in the nest. The nest parasite often oviposited through the additional cell closure but its offspring were then trapped in the empty cell and starved to death. 4. Only 5.4% of the inner brood cells that were protected by an empty cell were parasitised, compared with 28.9% of those without an anterior, empty cell; 27.4% of the empty cells contained dead parasite offspring (eggs and larvae). Thus, the empty cells provided significant protection and, combined with additional means of protection of brood cells, led to a low degree of parasitism. More than 77% of the wasp offspring died at an early stage due to intraspecific interference competition within brood cells and as result of the wasps’ oviposition into empty cells.  相似文献
