Recent revision of the fern diversity of the French Caribbean island of Guadeloupe and its dependencies (Marie Galante, Les Saintes and La Désirade) resulted in the listing of 292 native ferns and club mosses in 28 families and 88 genera, of which eight ferns are endemic to Guadeloupe and 20 taxa are only recorded from the Lesser Antilles. Additionally, 21 species have recently been found to be naturalized. Nineteen new combinations are made and a new hybrid is described. Many types from the Fée collection have been reassessed and a number of names are lecto‐ or neotypified. Establishing which factors determine species distributions is of major relevance for practical applications such as conservation planning. The Amazonian lowlands exhibit considerable internal heterogeneity that is not apparent in existing vegetation maps. We used ferns as a model group to study patterns in plant species distributions and community composition at regional and landscape scales. Fern species composition and environmental data were collected in 109 plots of 250 × 2 m distributed among four sites in Brazilian Amazonia. Interplot distances varied from 1 to ca 670 km. When floristically heterogeneous datasets were analyzed, the use of an extended Sørensen dissimilarity index rather than the traditional Sørensen index improved model fit and made interpretation of the results easier. Major factors associated with species composition varied among sites, difference in cation concentration was a strong predictor of floristic dissimilarity in those sites with pronounced heterogeneity in cation concentration. Difference in clay content was the most relevant variable in sites with uniform cation concentrations. In every case, environmental differences were invariably better than geographic distances in predicting species compositional differences. Our results are consistent with the ideas that: (1) the relative predictive capacity of the explanatory variables depend on the relative lengths of the observed gradients; and (2) environmental gradients can be hierarchically structured such that gradients occur inside gradients. Therefore, site‐specific relationships among variables can mask the bigger picture and make it more difficult to unravel the factors structuring plant communities in Amazonia.  相似文献

在野外调查和已有资料的基础上,对巴山地区蕨类植物的区系和分布进行了系统的分析。结果表明,该区具有蕨类植物34科,79属,289种(包括变种和变型)。区系地理成分复杂,在属的水平上以热带、亚热带成分为主,约占总属数的60.87%,温带成分占39.13%,而在种的水平上,热带、亚热带成分仅占总数的8.77%,温带成分处于优势地位,为91.23%,在温带成分中,东亚成分突出,加上中国特有成分共占总数的86.67%,显然应是东亚区系的一部分,因此巴山蕨类植物区系应属于中国—日本蕨类植物亚区。垂直分布可以划分3个带,蕨类植物主要分布在海拔1000~1800m。  相似文献

Abstract

The aim of this article was to test the way in which geographical factors influence island floras in the Mediterranean basin, using ferns as target organisms, and the islands surrounding Sicily as location. A matrix with presence/absence data concerning fern taxa in the 16 islands studied was compiled. Cluster analysis, principal co-ordinates analysis (PCoA), principal components analysis (PCA) and a Bayesian analysis were performed. For each island, the total number of fern taxa was regressed against three factors: island area, island elevation and isolation. All the analyses pointed to affinities between islands according to their different geological composition, independently from their geographic position. A clear positive island species/area relationship (ISAR) was shown only for the volcanic islands. The island species/(area×elevation) relationship (ISAER), on the contrary, was unsatisfactory. The main features of interest are the following: (1) the clear division of the islands into two groups, volcanic vs. sedimentary; (2) the floristic richness of the volcanic compared to sedimentary islands and (3) the uniqueness of the pteridophyte flora of Pantelleria. This seems to demonstrate that the lower number of taxa in the islands farthest away from the “mainland” (Sicily, Tunisia) is not due to isolation, but due to another factor, probably habitat availability.  相似文献

Morphological and plastid rbcL and trnG-R sequence data suggest that the fern currently recognized as Megalastrum lasiernos (Dryopteridaceae) is in fact a tree fern (Cyatheaceae) and a member of the Cyathea clade. Accordingly, a new combination is made: Cyathea myriotricha. Based on morphological and ecological similarities, this species appears most closely related to C. aterrima. Abstract.  We studied the patterns of species richness and range–size rarity (as a measure of endemism) of two plant groups (Pteridophyta, Bromeliaceae) and birds along two gradients of elevation, humidity and human land use in a forested Andean valley. Both transects covered the transition from an arid valley bottom through a cloud forest zone to relictual high-elevation Polylepis forest, but transects differed in overall precipitation. Plants were surveyed in 88 plots of 400 m2 each, while birds were detected primarily through visual observations and tape recordings over areas of 0.3–1.5 km2. Global range sizes of all species were mapped on 1°-grids and range-size rarity was calculated as the mean inverse range size of all species recorded in elevational steps of 200 m. Patterns of species richness and range–size rarity were mainly unrelated between and within study groups. Monotonic increases and decreases and hump-shaped patterns were observed for species richness as well as range–size rarity. Several of these patterns can be interpreted in the light of the ecological requirements of each taxonomic group, e.g. dependence of fern species richness on humidity or of bird richness on habitat complexity. Species richness of ferns and birds peaked at higher elevations along the less rainy transect, possibly as a result of higher levels of solar radiation and ecosystem productivity. Patterns of species richness and endemism of the study groups are causally unrelated and cannot be used to predict those of other groups at the spatial scale of this study. Human impact was highest in areas of mostly low to intermediate species richness, but was often high in zones of high endemism.  相似文献

Morphological characters, chloroplast DNA, and allozymes were used to analyze the distribution of individuals within a hybrid population of the ferns Polystichum munitum and P. imbricans in northwestern California. Microsites within the population were characterized according to soil moisture and light levels reaching the plants. In sites with low soil moisture and high light levels, all of the ferns were genetically and morphologically like P. imbricans. In contrast, ferns with the genetic and morphological identity of P. munitum predominated in moist shady sites. Intermediate sites supported very few P.munitum, a wide variety of hybrid recombinants, and a majority of ferns with P. imbricans characteristics. The pattern of variation within the population is noteworthy because of the close proximity of the habitat extremes and the long-range dispersal of fern spores. We conclude that natural selection along environmental gradients must be a major factor in determining the ecological and genetic associations within the hybrid zone. The results of this study are evaluated in the context of the fern life cycle and compared to the assumptions of models explaining the establishment and maintenance of hybrid zones, which vary in the role attributed to environmentally mediated natural selection.  相似文献
