To better understand the evolutionary dynamics of repetitive sequences in human sex chromosomes, we have analyzed seven new X/Y homologous microsatellites located within PCDHX/Y, one of the two recently described gene pairs in the Xq21.3/Yp11.2 hominid-specific homology block, in samples from Portugal and Mozambique. Sharp differences were observed on X/Y allele distributions, concerning both the presence of private alleles and a different modal repeat length for X-linked and Y-linked markers, and this difference was statistically significant. Higher diversity was found in X-linked microsatellites than in their Y chromosome counterparts; when comparing populations, Mozambicans showed more allele diversity for the X chromosome, but the contrary was true for the Y chromosome microsatellites. Evolutionary patterns, relying on intragenic PCDHX/Y SNPs, also revealed distinct scenarios for X and Y chromosomes. Greater microsatellite diversity was displayed by African X chromosomes within the most common haplotypes shared by both populations, whereas higher microsatellite diversity was found in Portugal for the ancestral Y chromosome haplotype. The most frequent PCDHY haplotype in Portuguese was the derived one, and it was not found in Mozambicans. TMRCA estimated by the rho parameter resulted in 13,700 years (7,500-20,000 years), which is consistent with a recent, post-Out-of-Africa origin for this haplotype. In conclusion, the newly described microsatellite loci generally displayed greater X-linked to Y-linked diversity and this pattern was also detected with slower evolving markers, with a remarkable differentiation between populations observed for Y chromosome haplotypes and, thus, greater divergence among Y chromosomes in human populations.  相似文献

New radiocarbon dates from the sites of Bockstein-T?rle, Geissenkl?sterle, Hohle Fels, Hohlenstein-Stadel, Sirgenstein, and Vogelherd in the Swabian Jura of southwestern Germany indicate that the Aurignacian of the region spans the period from ca. 40-30ka BP. If the situation at Vogelherd, in which skeletal remains from modern humans underlie an entire Aurignacian sequence, is viewed as representative for the region, the dates from the Swabian Jura support the hypothesis that populations of modern humans entered the region by way of the "Danube Corridor." The lithic technology from the lower Aurignacian of Geissenkl?sterle III is fully developed, and classic Aurignacian forms are well represented. During the course of the Aurignacian, numerous assemblages rich in art works, jewelry, and musical instruments are documented. By no later than 29ka BP the Gravettian was well established in the region. These dates are consistent with the "Kulturpumpe" hypothesis that important cultural innovations of the Aurignacian and Gravettian in Swabia predate similar developments in other regions of Europe. The radiocarbon dates from Geissenkl?sterle corroborate observations from other non-archaeological data sets indicating large global fluctuations in the atmospheric concentrations of radiocarbon between 30 and 50ka calendar years ago. These fluctuations lead to complications in building reliable chronologies during this period and cause the "Middle Paleolithic Dating Anomaly" and the "Coexistence Effect," which tend to exaggerate the temporal overlap between Neanderthals and modern humans.  相似文献

Human handedness is thought to be unique and universal. Critical examination of primary sources challenges both of these conclusions. Data on laterality of function in apes, humankind’s closest living relations, indicates hand preference and task specialization, but not yet handedness, as crucial studies remain to be done. Ethnographic data across cultures reveal more variance than is usually acknowledged, but existing findings are based on minimal and limited data. Ethological studies of spontaneous behavior in every day life are needed for both human and non-human primates.  相似文献

The amino acid sequences of the amidinotransferases and the nucleotide sequences of their genes or cDNA from four Streptomyces species (seven genes) and from the kidneys of rat, pig, human and human pancreas were compared. The overall amino acid and nucleotide sequences of the prokaryotes and eukaryotes were very similar and further, three regions were identified that were highly identical. Evidence is presented that there is virtually zero chance that the overall and high identity regions of the amino acid sequence similarities and the overall nucleotide sequence similarities between Streptomyces and mammals represent random match. Both rat and lamprey amidinotransferases were able to use inosamine phosphate, the amidine group acceptor of Streptomyces. We have concluded that the structure and function of the amidinotransferases and their genes has been highly conserved through evolution from prokaryotes to eukaryotes. The evolution has occurred with: (1) a high degree of retention of nucleotide and amino acid sequences; (2) a high degree of retention of the primitive Streptomyces guanine+cytosine (G+C) third codon position composition in certain high identity regions of the eukaryote cDNA; (3) a decrease in the specificities for the amidine group acceptors; and (4) most of the mutations silent in the regions suggested to code for active sites in the enzymes.  相似文献

Dominance competition among males of the same group is characteristic for most primates including humans, with the outcome—rank—being positively associated with fitness. However, because we do not observe an evolutionary arms race toward hyperdominance in primate social systems, the evolution of ever more dominating behavior characteristics may be checked by increased costs in fitness to top rank. Empirical evidence for such costs, particularly in humans, however, is almost nonexistent. Here, for the first time, we can demonstrate for a cohort of male humans, military officers, all graduates of the class of 1950 of the U.S. Military Academy, constituting a closed and cohesive social group, that competitive qualities leading to top rank may have a negative effect on fitness.  相似文献

The general objective of this study was to compare the precise grasping behavior and intermanual differences in performance between three Pan paniscus and five Homo sapiens in grasping small objects. We compared the temporal pattern of two submovements of consecutive grasping cycles, the (visuomotor) reaching and the (sensorimotor) grasping. Both species were similarly successful in this task, they showed a behavioral right-hand preference and preferred specific types of grips. Bonobos required less time for reaching an object but a much longer time to grasp it than humans did. Thus, the species pursued different strategies. We assumed that this might be due to the different grip techniques. However, grip preferences did not serve a quicker intramanual performance but they pronounced differences between hands. Intermanual differences in timing were restricted to the reaching part and more strongly in bonobos than in humans. However, the right hand need not necessarily perform quicker. As in the case of humans, we assume that attentional cues were focused more on preparing a proper grip with the right hand than on a quick performance. However, strong intermanual differences in bonobos may indicate an overall stronger neuronal asymmetry in the motor organization of the finger musculature that prepare a proper grip than is true of humans.  相似文献

The aims of this study were to investigate the effect of allometry on the shape of dm2 and M1 crown outlines and to examine whether the trajectory and magnitude of scaling are shared between species. The sample included 160 recent Homo sapiens, 28 Upper Paleolithic H. sapiens, 10 early H. sapiens, and 33 H. neanderthalensis (Neandertal) individuals. Of these, 97 were dm2/M1 pairs from the same individuals. A two‐block partial least squares analysis of paired individuals revealed a significant correlation in crown shape between dm2 and M1. A principal component analysis confirmed that Neandertal and H. sapiens dm2 and M1 shapes differ significantly and that this difference is primarily related to hypocone size and projection. Allometry accounted for a small but significant proportion of the total morphological variance. We found the magnitude of the allometric effect to be significantly stronger in Neandertals than in H. sapiens. Procrustes distances were significantly different between the two tooth classes in Neandertals, but not among H. sapiens groups. Nevertheless, we could not reject the null hypothesis that the two species share the same allometric trajectory. Although size clearly contributes to the unique shape of the Neandertal dm2 and M1, the largest H. sapiens teeth do not exhibit the most Neandertal‐like morphology. Hence, additional factors must contribute to the differences in dm2 and M1 crown shape between these two species. We suggest an investigation of the role of timing and rate of development on the shapes of the dm2 and M1 may provide further answers. Potassium inward rectifier KIR2.1 channels contribute to the stable resting membrane potential in a variety of muscle and neuronal cell-types. Mutations in the KIR2.1 gene KCNJ2 have been associated with human disease, such as cardiac arrhythmias and periodic paralysis. Crystal structure and homology modelling of KIR2.1 channels combined with functional current measurements provided valuable insights in mechanisms underlying channel function. KIR2.1 channels have been cloned and analyzed from all main vertebrate phyla, except reptilians. To address this lacuna, we set out to clone reptilian KIR2.1 channels. Using a degenerated primer set we cloned the KCNJ2 coding regions from muscle tissue of turtle, snake, bear, quail and bream, and compared their deduced amino acid sequences with those of KIR2.1 sequences from 26 different animal species obtained from Genbank. Furthermore, expression constructs were prepared for functional electrophysiological studies of ectopically expressed KIR2.1 ion channels. In general, KCNJ2 gene evolution followed normal phylogenetic patterns, however turtle KIR2.1 ion channel sequence is more homologues to avians than to snake. Alignment of all 31 KIR2.1 sequences showed that all disease causing KIR2.1 mutations, except V93I, V123G and N318S, are fully conserved. Homology models were built to provide structural insights into species specific amino acid substitutions. Snake KIR2.1 channels became expressed at the plasmamembrane and produced typical barium sensitive (IC50 ∼6 μM) inward rectifier currents.  相似文献
