When animal home ranges overlap extensively in species lacking overt territorial behaviours, identifying exclusive core areas
within individual ranges can be difficult. By analysing the size and overlap of successively smaller core areas among individual
Eurasian red squirrels (Sciurus vulgaris), we determined exclusive areas within the home ranges of resident males and females. Possible effects of habitat composition
and food supplies were explored by monitoring squirrels in different conifer forests and during years with low and high tree
seed production. Using outlier-exclusive cores (OEC) revealed that the total ranges consisted of large sally zones (on average,
35% of the total minimum convex polygon [MCP] range) around home ranges with multi-nucleate cores. The mean OEC home range
size did not differ between the sexes but was larger with poor food availability. Home ranges (99% incremental cluster polygons
[ICP]) overlapped extensively between sexes (average overlap high food–low food: males by females 21–40%, females by males
43–45%) and among males (males by males 26–44%), while intrasexual overlap among females was low (9–10%). The overlap of inner
cores among females rapidly approached zero, suggesting the intrasexual territoriality of 75% core areas. This was not the
case among male squirrels, for which intrasexual overlap averaged only 4% at 50% but 18% at 75% core areas. Even the smallest
inner cores had some degree of intersexual overlap, indicating that complete territoriality did not occur in this species.
Female home ranges were more strongly affected by annual fluctuations in food supplies than male ranges. Females reduced the
size of their food-based intrasexual territories when food availability increases. Males probably benefit from using larger
home ranges and core areas, which overlap with the ranges of several females, by increasing their probability of successful

The fragmentation of landscapes produces habitat gaps where the distance between visual landmarks may exceed the perceptual
range of a species and impose navigational constraints. We estimated the visual perceptual range of the Australian sleepy
lizard, Tiliqua rugosa, by releasing individuals in the centre of a cleared arena in high temperature conditions, with a 0.5-m-high bush placed
either 10, 20 or 30 m from the release site. Lizards were more likely to locate those bushes and shelter under them when they
were closer, and no lizards found a bush at 30 m. In addition, lizards were less likely to move from the release point when
bushes were at 30 m than when they were at the two closer distances. These data suggest that for sleepy lizards the perceptual
range for a 0.5-m-high bush is about 20 m. In the uncleared chenopod shrub-land where these lizards live, suitable shelter
bushes are an average of 10.5 m from any point in their home range, well within their perceptual range. 相似文献

We monitored 20 cape foxes (Vulpes chama) to determine the social organization, survival, and dispersal of this species on two sites in South Africa from 2005 to 2008. Cape foxes were socially monogamous and territorial, with annual home ranges of mated pairs (n = 8) overlapping 80% on average, compared to a mean overlap of 3% between foxes in adjacent ranges. At least 2 pairs remained associated for >1 breeding season, and both sexes exhibited strong site fidelity, as home ranges in consecutive years overlapped 58–98%. Members of mated pairs never foraged together, however they used the same or nearby (<100 m apart) day rests 81% of the time when pups were 0–4 months of age, but only 28% of the time during other months of the year. Dispersal was male biased, as all juvenile males (n = 6) dispersed when 9–11.5 months old, whereas 3 of 4 juvenile females remained philopatric as either breeders or non-breeding associates. At least 6 foxes bred as yearlings (3 F, 3 M), indicating cape foxes have high reproductive potential. Two adult females maintained their territories after their mates died, whereas two adult males dispersed soon after their mates died, indicating cape foxes likely have a female-based social organization. Annual survival was 0.64, and predation from larger carnivores, primarily black-backed jackals (Canis mesomelas), was responsible for 71% of mortalities. Our results provided empirical support for previous hypotheses regarding the relationship between body size and life-history patterns in Canidae, as several ecological parameters of cape foxes were similar to that of other small (<6 kg) canid species, especially Vulpes species inhabiting arid and semi-arid environments. 相似文献

The behaviour during an exploration task and the response to a confinement stress of Arctic charr Salvelinus alpinus were evaluated. Behaviour of individuals during 90 min of exploration was classified into high and low activity. High‐activity individuals had higher plasma cortisol levels following stress compared to low‐activity individuals. This indicates that high‐ and low‐activity individuals correspond to reactive and proactive stress‐coping styles. Further, a pigmentation analysis showed that high‐activity individuals had a higher number of carotenoid spots cm?2 than low‐activity individuals. Thus, carotenoid pigmentation, as melanin pigmentation in other salmonids, could be linked to stress‐coping style in S. alpinus. 相似文献

The line transect method is one of the main methods used to estimate primate densities. Several protocols have been proposed
to analyze the data recorded under this method but none of them have been widely accepted since there is a considerable controversy
about their respective accuracy. In this study, densities of the black colobus monkeyColobus satanas calculated using eight different protocols were compared with the actual density given by the home range method. Rates of
polyspecific associations were also compared. The two most accurate estimates of group density (under- or overestimation <10%)
were yielded by the protocol that used the maximum transect-to-animal distance and by that of using a fixed distance of 100
m. These protocols, however, underestimated individual density because counts performed from transects underestimated by 23%
the average group size. The six other protocols overestimated group density by 20–195%. Factors that could explain these overestimation
were discussed. Because histogram of sighting frequency showed several classes of distances with no records and because groups
have been detected as far as 160 m, we suggested that the uneven topography of the study site increased the variability of
the sighting distances. Combined with a relatively low number of sightings (n=23), this did not allow to identify a sharp detection distance. Rates of polyspecific association found with the two methods
were similar. We recommend to investigate the influence of the topography for bias in density estimates when using the line

红隼(Falco tinnunculus)被列为国家二级重点保护野生动物,是能同时适应农村和城市环境的小型猛禽,对维持城市生态系统稳定具有重要意义。2022年4月至7月,为在北京救助的7只红隼佩戴了卫星追踪器,追踪其活动轨迹,依据追踪的动物活动位点数据,采用净平方位移-时间曲线依次对各红隼的迁徙模式进行了判别,深入分析了迁徙红隼的迁徙时间、距离和路线等,并采用核心密度法分别计算了迁徙及留居型红隼95%及50%活动区面积。研究结果表明,在北京地区红隼的迁徙模式为部分迁徙,追踪的7只红隼个体(N01 ~ N07)中,4只为留鸟,1只为迁徙鸟,2只居留类型无法准确判断。N01为迁徙红隼,其度夏地和越冬地分别在内蒙古锡林郭勒盟和河北廊坊,此红隼秋季迁徙速度明显高于春季,其春季迁徙距离551 km,历时25 d,平均迁徙速度为22 km/d,而秋季迁徙距离412 km,历时2 d,平均迁徙速度为203 km/d,河北承德滦平县是其春季迁徙的重要中途停歇地。不同红隼个体间95%及50%活动区面积均存在较大差异,迁徙红隼N01 95%、50%活动区面积在度夏区分别为93.10 km2、17.50 km2,在越冬区分别为7.03 km2、0.99 km2;留居型红隼95%、50%活动区面积均值分别为1 165.34 km2、178.71 km2(n = 4),其中最大95%、50%活动区面积分别为4 320.26 km2(N02)、648.22 km2(N02),最小95%、50%活动区面积分别为2.80 km2(N03)、0.29 km2(N03)。本研究揭示了北京地区红隼的迁徙模式、迁徙路线、重要停歇地及活动区状况,为红隼的针对性保护和管理提供了科学依据。 相似文献

北部湾沙田水域中华白海豚和江豚的同域分布格局及时空变化 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
北部湾是中华白海豚和江豚的重要分布区,但是对该水域两物种的分布格局及时空变化的研究却比较少,也不清楚这两个物种分布区是否有重叠。2003 ~ 2004 年与2011 ~2012 年期间,我们在北部湾沙田水域进行了船只调查,总计航程4 876.8 km,收集了两个物种空间分布的数据。结果表明,2003 ~ 2004 年仅发现中华白海豚,2011 ~2012 年则同时发现了中华白海豚和江豚。与2003 ~ 2004 年4 ~ 5 月相比,中华白海豚在2011 年4 ~ 5 月份的遇见率明显增加(0.152 vs 0. 028 头次/km)。中华白海豚的MCP、95% FK 家域和50% FK 核心域面积分别为162. 6 km2 、271. 35 km2 和56.78 km2 ,2011 ~ 2012 年50% FK 核心家域有所扩大且东移。江豚的MCP、95% FK家域和50% FK 核心域面积分别为97.21 km2 、318.72 km2 和38.18 km2 。江豚主要分布于中华白海豚的外围远岸水域,同时两个物种的分布区有小部分重叠。基于多种因素的分析,我们推测,江豚可能存在季节性迁移以及中华白海豚对河口区有明显的偏好,可能是造成它们分布格局不同的原因。 相似文献

20 0 0~ 2 0 0 2年 ,我们应用标记识别法和地理信息系统对朱繁殖期的活动性、活动区和栖息地利用进行了研究。结果表明 :朱在越冬期、繁殖期和繁殖后期的觅食距离存在差异 ,分别为 2 82 1± 1 4 88km、0 5 6 3± 0 6 81km和 1 70 6± 0 834km ,但同一时期中不同个体间的觅食距离无显著差异。不同年份中 ,朱在越冬期和繁殖期的觅食距离无显著差异 ;在繁殖后期 ,由于受到干旱等气候因素的影响 ,两年的觅食距离差异显著。一天中觅食距离最远的是 10 :0 0~ 12 :0 0 ,最近的是 0 6 :0 0~ 0 8:0 0。不同时间段中觅食行为的比例差异显著 ,0 6 :0 0~ 10 :0 0和 16 :0 0~ 18:0 0为取食高峰期 ,中午和夜宿前的休息和理羽行为则高于其他时间段。MCP法和 90 %Kernel法的计算结果表明 ,其中 8只观测次数较多的朱在繁殖期的平均活动区面积分别为10 0 8± 4 9 8hm2 和 175 6± 91 3hm2 ,5 0 %Kernel法计算的活动区的核心面积为 4 3 8± 2 1 5hm2 。朱个体间的繁殖活动区重叠强度较大 ,达到各自活动区的 2 4 5 %± 2 7 3%。朱营巢比较密集 ,配对亲鸟间的活动区重叠强度和其他个体的重叠强度无显著差别。栖息地利用研究表明 ,朱对针阔混交林的利用率显著低于研究区内的可利用率 ,对水田的利用 相似文献

2018年初以来,北部湾涠洲岛附近出现了布氏鲸(Balaenoptera edeni)的活动。一头上颌与须板异常的小布氏鲸个体引发热议,其视频在网络上广泛流传。我们在船只调查时,目击该个体10次,其以单独活动为主(90%),主要出现在涠洲岛到斜阳岛之间的水域,最小凸多边形家域面积为14km2,核心家域面积为166.9km2。然而,在 2019年3月30日我们发现该个体已死亡漂浮在海面,根据尸体腐烂状况来推测,该个体的死亡时间大约为3~5日,死亡原因不明。根据照片和现场解剖分析,推测该小布氏鲸的上颌和鲸须异常可能是被渔网或绳索缠绕导致的。由于无法从外形上确认属于哪一个亚种,因此我们测定了该个体的线粒体DNA D-loop(mitochondrial DNA, mtDNA)和细胞色素b(cytochrome b, Cyt b)基因,分别得到909bp和395bp的序列,经比对和系统发育重建,发现该个体属于近岸分布的小布氏鲸亚种(Eden’s whale, B. e. edeni)。由于小布氏鲸具有一定季节迁移特性,我们无法判断造成其上颌伤害的渔网或绳索是否在中国水域。尽管如此,仍然建议当地部门应加强宣传,减少渔网等海洋垃圾的丢弃和排放,为小布氏鲸营造一个安全的栖息环境。 相似文献

The intricate charge–discharge reactions and bad conductivity nature of sulfur determine the extreme importance of cathode engineering for Li–S batteries. Herein, spinel ZnCo2O4 porous particles@N‐doped reduced graphene oxide (ZnCo2O4@N‐RGO) are prepared via the combined procedures of refluxing and hydrothermal treatment, consisting of interconnected uniform ZnCo2O4 nanocubes with an average size of 5 nm anchored on graphene nanosheets. The as‐obtained composite can act as an inimitable cathode scaffold to suppress the shuttling of polysulfides by chemical confinement of ZnCo2O4 and N‐RGO for the first time, as demonstrated by the adsorption energy of ZnCo2O4 to Li2S4 via the strong chemical bonding between Zn or Co and S. The RGO nanosheets with a relatively high specific surface area provide a good conductive network and structural stability. The introduction of doped N atoms and numerous ZnCo2O4 porous nanoparticles can inhibit the transfer of lithium polysulfides between the cathode and anode. Due to the unique structural and compositional features, the as‐obtained hybrid materials with the high sulfur loading of 71% and even 82% still deliver high specific capacity, good rate capability, and enhanced cycling stability with exceptionally high initial Coulombic efficiency, which displays a high utilization of sulfur. 相似文献
