The sweetpotato whitefly, Bemisia tabaci Gennadius (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae), is a major pest on greenhouse crops including sweet pepper (Capsicum annuum L.), which is one of the leading greenhouse crops in South Korea. Synthetic insecticides, especially the neonicotinoids, have been used to conventionally control this pest. There have been continuous efforts to develop plant‐derived compounds as insecticides, deterrents, and repellents to reduce spraying synthetic insecticides. To develop new plant‐extract insecticides, we investigated the insecticidal effects of Perilla sp. (Perilla frutescens var. crispa) extract on B. tabaci in laboratory conditions. The Perilla sp. extract induced 90 % mortality within one hour, but phytotoxicity symptoms on sweet pepper leaves were also observed. We monitored the population change and spatial distribution of adult B. tabaci in an experimental sweet pepper greenhouse using yellow sticky traps, and analyzed distribution patterns by spatial analysis with distance indices (SADIE). Based on monitoring data and SADIE analysis, we concluded that B. tabaci aggregated near the greenhouse entrances, and it showed aggregation and association pattern as time passed. Therefore, we recommend spraying Perilla sp. extract near the entrances or wild host before the pest population penetrates. It will be one of the alternative pest management strategies to reduce B. tabaci population with fewer negative effects from chemical insecticide. Further study is required to reduce the phytotoxicity symptoms from Perilla sp. extract spray and insecticidal effect should be evaluated under field conditions. 相似文献

Observations on the ultrastructure of Friedmannia israelensis Chantanachat & Bold revealed the presence of a phycoplast and zoospores with cruciate rootlets. During mitosis, the nuclear envelope partially disintegrates and the basal bodies remain at the cell surface on either side of the developing cleavage furrow. A fungal strain capable of utilizing chlorpyrifos as sole carbon and energy sources was isolated from soil by enrichment cultivation approach. The half-lives of degradation (DT50) for chlorpyrifos at concentrations of 1, 10, and 100 mg l−1 by the fungal strain DSP in mineral salt medium were measured to be 2.03, 2.93, and 3.49 days, respectively. Two cell-free extracts [E (1:10) and E (1:20)] from the fungal strain DSP in bran–glucose medium were prepared and used to enhance chlorpyrifos degradation on vegetables. Compared with the controls, the DT50 of chlorpyrifos were reduced by 70.3%, 65.6%, 80.6%, 80.6%, and 86.1%, and by 53.8%, 43.2%, 66.0%, 54.3%, and 67.7% on E (1:20) and E (1:10) treated pakchoi, water spinach, Malabar spinach, haricot beans, and pepper, respectively. The 7-day residual values (R
7) of chlorpyrifos on E (1:10) treated vegetables were all lower than the corresponding maximum residue levels of European Union (EU MRLs), except that the R

The canonical Wnt pathway is recurrently used during embryogenesis and adult life. To track the cellular output of Wnt signaling in a living organism, we designed a hormone-inducible Wnt responsive system, capable to dynamically and specifically report Wnt pathway activities through eGFP expression. In contrast to previous in vivo reporters, our system essentially avoids interference of consecutive signals by remaining dormant until addition of hormone, which makes it a valuable tool to map canonical Wnt signaling in post-embryonic stages. Producers in the southeastern USA face significant crop losses from the stink bugs Nezara viridula (L.), Euschistus servus (Say), and Chinavia hilaris (Say) (all Hemiptera: Pentatomidae). Cotton, peanut, and soybean are major agronomic crops and host plants of stink bugs in the region. We conducted a field plot study to measure the relative longevity of adult, unmated N. viridula males and females caged on peanut, cotton, and soybean to test three hypotheses: (1) differences in mortality are associated with differences in host plant food suitability, (2) mortality rates increase with age, and (3) males have higher mortality than females. Using survival analysis, we found that the sex of the individual did not affect survival rates on any of the three host plants. Survival was significantly higher in cotton and soybean than in peanut. Mortality rates increased with age in peanut, but not in soybean or cotton. The frequency of canopy temperatures above 35 °C was higher in peanut than in soybean. Peanut appears to be a less than ideal habitat in terms of canopy temperature and/or food quality for N. viridula adults. Both, cotton and soybean were equally suitable food resources for N. viridula adults prior to maturation of the plants. 相似文献

In the Venice Lagoon (Italy), about 106 t (wet weight) of Ulva rigida biomass are produced annually as one of the major results of eutrophication. Harvests have been initiated to reduce negative
impacts of this biomass, however, due to the high costs of such effort, only 40 000 t yr-1 are currently being collected. At the moment, biotransformation into compost seems to be the only feasible technology for
utilising large quantities of Ulva biomass. We describe and discuss here a successful composting strategy together with the chemico-physical and microbiological
characteristics of the resultant composts. Our composting experiments were conducted at a scale of 20 t. The composting technology
utilises large proportions (70–90%) of Ulva biomass and results in a valuable, high-quality end product (compost and compost-based products). This process and the resulting

Green gram, Vigna radiata (L.) Wilczek, is an important pulse crop of Asia. Severe attack by the larvae of Spilosoma obliqua Walker (Lepidoptera: Arctiidae) causes defoliation of green gram and reduces seed yield. Females lay eggs on the leaf surface, and therefore, surface wax plays an important role as short-range attractant and oviposition stimulant. So, we have attempted to find out whether leaf surface wax compounds (alkanes and free fatty acids) from three green gram cultivars (PDM 54, PUSA BAISAKHI and SAMRAT) could act as short-range attractant and oviposition stimulant in females. The TLC, GC-MS and GC-FID analyses of n-hexane extracts revealed 20 n-alkanes from n-C15 to n-C36 and 13 free fatty acids from C12:0 to C21:0, whilst linoleic acid was unique in SAMRAT. Pentacosane was the predominant amongst n-alkanes in the leaf surface waxes of three cultivars. Heneicosanoic acid and palmitoleic acid were the predominant free fatty acids in the leaf surface waxes of PDM 54, and PUSA BAISAKHI and SAMRAT, respectively. Females were attracted towards one leaf equivalent surface wax of three green gram cultivars against solvent controls (n-hexane) in Y-tube olfactometer bioassays. A synthetic blend of pentacosane, heptacosane, nonacosane, hexatriacontane, palmitoleic acid, linolenic acid and stearic acid, a synthetic blend of pentacosane, hexatriacontane and stearic acid, and a synthetic blend of hexatriacontane, linolenic acid and stearic acid resembling in amounts present in one leaf equivalent surface wax of PDM 54, PUSA BAISAKHI and SAMRAT, respectively, served as short-range attractant and oviposition stimulant in females. Females showed equal preference for egg laying towards the above three synthetic blends when these blends were tested against each other, and hence, these blends could be employed in development of baited traps in pest management strategies. 相似文献

A detailed ultrastructure study was made of cell division and colony development in Eudorina elegans Ehrenberg. At the onset of cell division and prior to nuclear division the nucleus moved from the cell center to the cell surface. During nuclear division the nuclear membrane remained intact, except for openings occurring at the nuclear poles. The spindle microtubules appeared to arise from a MTOC-like (microtubule organizing centers) structure, while centrioles were absent from the nuclear poles. Following telophase, daughter nuclei formed which were separated by several distinct bands of endoplasmic reticulum. Cytokinesis occurred with formation of a cleavage furrow, associated with a typical phycoplast band of microtubules. However, cytokinesis was incomplete, resulting in formation of cytoplasmic bridges between the plakeal cells. Upon completion of up to five successive cell divisions, the plakea underwent inversion, which appeared to involve the production of colonial envelope material and rearrangement of cytoplasmic bridges. Intermediate filament (IF) proteins exist in multiple structural forms within cells including mature IF, short filaments or 'squiggles', and non-filamentous precursors called particles. These forms are interconvertible and their relative abundance is IF type, cell type- and cell cycle stage-dependent. These structures are often associated with molecular motors, such as kinesin and dynein, and are therefore capable of translocating through the cytoplasm along microtubules. The assembly of mature IF from their precursor particles is also coupled to translation. These dynamic properties of IF provide mechanisms for regulating their reorganization and assembly in response to the functional requirements of cells. The recent findings that IF and their precursors are frequently associated with signaling molecules have revealed new functions for IF beyond their more traditional roles as mechanical integrators of cells and tissues. 相似文献
