Light is crucial for the synchronization of internal biological rhythms with environmental rhythms. Hospitalization causes a range of unfavorable medical conditions, including delirium, sleep disturbances, depressed mood, and increased fall, especially in elderly people. The hospital room environment contributes significantly to patients’ circadian physiology and behavior; however, few studies have evaluated light intensity in hospital settings. In this study, bedside light intensity during the daytime (6:00–21:00) was measured at 1-min intervals using a light meter on 4869 bed-days at the Inabe General Hospital in Mie, Japan (latitude 35°N), for approximately 1 month in each season. Daytime light exposure in home settings was measured in nonhospitalized elderly individuals (n = 1113) for two consecutive days at 1-min intervals using a wrist light meter. Median daytime light intensities at window and nonwindow hospital beds were 327.9 lux [interquartile range (IQR), 261.5–378.4] and 118.4 lux (IQR, 100.6–142.9), respectively, and daytime light intensity measured in nonhospitalized elderly individuals was 337.3 lux (IQR, 165.5–722.7). Compared with data in nonhospitalized elderly individuals, nonwindow beds were exposed to significantly lower daytime light intensity (p < 0.001), whereas window beds were exposed to similar daytime light intensity to that of home settings (p = 1.00). These results were consistent regardless of seasons (spring, summer, fall, and winter) or room directions (north vs. south facing). The lowest median daytime light intensity was observed at nonwindow beds in north-facing rooms during the winter (84.8 lux; IQR, 76.0–95.8). Further studies evaluating the incidence of in-hospital outcomes between patients hospitalized in window and nonwindow beds are needed.  相似文献

HSPB8 is a member of ubiquitous small heat shock protein (sHSP) family, whose expression is induced in response to a wide variety of unfavorable physiological and environmental conditions. Investigation of HSPB8 structure indicated that HSPB8 belongs to the group of so-called intrinsically disordered proteins and possesses a highly flexible structure. Unlike most other sHSPs, HSPB8 tends to form small-molecular-mass oligomers and exhibits substrate-dependent chaperone activity. In cooperation with BAG3, the chaperone activity of HSPB8 was reported to be involved in the delivery of misfolded proteins to the autophagy machinery. Through this way, HSPB8 interferes with pathological processes leading to neurodegenerative diseases. Accordingly, published studies have identified genetic links between mutations of HSPB8 and some kind of neuromuscular diseases, further supporting its important role in neurodegenerative disorders. In addition to their anti-aggregation properties, HSPB8 is indicated to interact with a wide range of client proteins, modulating their maturations and activities, and therefore, regulates a large repertoire of cellular functions, including apoptosis, proliferation, inflammation and etc. As a result, HSPB8 has key roles in cancer biology, autoimmune diseases, cardiac diseases and cerebral vascular diseases.  相似文献

Agricultural field crops differ in their vegetation height, coverage, and temporal development, affecting the abundances of bird species, which are often used as bioindicators. Although this relationship has been observed, no significant methodology exists to describe the dynamics of field crop growth on a landscape scale in connection with the abundance of indicator bird species that allows meaningful interpretation of bird abundance data with respect to crop vegetation parameters during the breeding season. In a field observation program, we monitored 2,900 ha of agricultural landscape to represent both the crop growth processes and the bird abundances. We measured these two parameters in the study area, dominated by winter wheat, winter rapeseed, maize, and fallow fields, and adapted the moving window approach to a new method of “moving window growth” to describe the dynamic development of height and coverage of the crops over time. Simultaneously, Skylarks (Alauda arvensis) territorial behavior was measured concurrently on the same fields and crops. Their dynamic abundance was documented over the breeding season. To test the relationship between crop growth and development and bird abundance, we applied a generalized linear model (GLM) in two ways: (a) without differentiation of crop species and (b) with differentiation of crop species. We found significant relationships between bird abundance and vegetation height and coverage with respect to both individual parameters and their interactions, even without differentiation of the agricultural crops. In general, increasing vegetation height and coverage, especially the interaction, led to decreasing bird abundance values. The model quality increased significantly by including differentiation of specific crops as an explanatory variable indicating a non‐homogenous situation between crops. Separate models for individual crop species revealed larger differences in model quality with best and least goodness of fit values for fallow fields and winter rapeseed, respectively. Because of the clear interactions between bird abundance, type of field crop, and vegetation height and coverage, it follows that both habitat suitability assessments of arable fields and the definition of favorable vegetation structures for farmland birds should be crop species‐specific.  相似文献

A gastric evacuation curve expresses how fast prey disappear from the stomach, and empirical models are used generally for the relationship between weight of prey remaining ( Wt ) and time ( t ) after a meal. Unfortunately, empirical models are likely to have restricted applicability because their parameters often represent limited biological mechanisms. This paper develops a simple digestion model. The simplest form of the model has four parameters; the digestion velocity (expressing enzymatic breakdown of prey), prey length, initial prey radius and the density of the prey. Two more parameters are included in an extended version; a time-delay before digestion starts and environmental temperature. The approach is based on the assumption that prey digestion is a surface process in that digestive enzymes attack progressively deeper into a prey of known size and shape so that the average digestion rate is proportional to the prey radius r (m). This process is characterized by the digestion velocity ds (m s –1). Unknown parameters are estimated with uncertainty using the maximum likelihood technique. Model evaluation using published data sets demonstrated that the new model is flexible. Prey geometry is incorporated into the model and temperature effects upon gastric evacuation are linked directly to the digestion velocity.  相似文献

The two most commonly used methods for estimating the food consumption of fish are based on either the evacuation rate of food or the energy budget of an individual fish. In this study, both of those methods were used to estimate the food consumption of fish under experimental conditions. Bioenergetics models of vendace Coregonus albula , smelt Osmerus eperlanus , roach Rutilus rutilus and perch Perca fluviatilis were reconstructed based on experimental data and published values. The precision of the bioenergetics estimates for food consumption was evaluated under experimental conditions. The modelling efficiency (EF) of the bioenergetics model was 0.90, 0.97 and 0.93 for coregonids, roach and perch, respectively, which indicated good agreement between observed and predicted values. Under our experimental conditions, the bioenergetics model estimated food consumption better than the evacuation rate model.  相似文献

Feeding of the bigeye flounder Hippoglossina macrops on the shrimp Heterocarpus reedi was analysed between 20 November and 4 December 1995. Feeding on H. reedi intensified between 0900 and 1600 hours with a second, smaller peak between 2300 and 0200 hours. Assuming an exponential gastric evacuation model, the gastric evacuation rate was estimated as 0·197 % W h −1 (95% CI=0·025–0·369). The daily ration decreased latitudinally from north to south from 3·62 to 2·66 and from 2·06 to 0·41 %W , respectively. Consumption was related positively to shrimp biomass and influenced by flounder size structure in the three fishing zones analysed and was estimated as 0·08–0·02% of the total shrimp biomass.  相似文献

Relationships between nutritional state, behavioural response to prey and gastric evacuation rates were examined in juvenile Pacific halibut Hippoglossus stenolepis feeding on squid. Pacific halibut reared at 2, 6 and 10° C were fasted for 1 or 7 days to generate variation in energetic state. The 7 day fast resulted in measurable declines in condition indices at 10 and 6° C but not at 2° C. At 10° C, all Pacific halibut consumed the first meal offered, but fish previously fasted for 7 days took significantly longer to locate and consume the meal than fish fasted for only 1 day. At 2° C, Pacific halibut fasted for 7 days did not generally consume the first meal offered, but resumed feeding 2·1 days sooner, on average, than fish fasted for only 1 day. The gastric evacuation rate of the squid meal was best described by a power model with near‐exponential curvature ( a  = 1·011). The evacuation rate was strongly temperature‐dependent ( Q 10 = 3·65) but displayed the same degree of variability at each temperature. The evacuation rate in Pacific halibut was not affected by feeding history, body size or energetic state. Furthermore, individual variation in gastric evacuation rate was not correlated with feeding responsiveness at any temperature. These results indicate a general plasticity in the behavioural but not physiological aspects of energy acquisition.  相似文献

An interdisciplinary team performed autopsies on an adult male and an infant male mummy from the American Southwest. Cause of death has not been determined for the infant. The presence of an unhealed skull fracture associated with an apparent hematoma in the adult male is suggestive of trauma as the cause of death in the adult. Evidence of disease is minimal. Analysis of powder thought to be dried blood from the thoracic cavity of the adult suggests the presence of human IgG. The instability of this protein may indicate the presence of proteolytic activity by enzymes that degrade immunoglobulins upon rehydration. The possibility of enzymatic degradation of proteins will be an important factor in future studies of such immunoglobulins in mummy remains and also indicates the importance of maintaining the desiccated condition of mummy tissues.  相似文献

1. Whether life‐history traits can determine community composition and structure is an important question that has been well explored theoretically, but has received scant empirical attention. Life‐history traits of a seven‐member community of galler and parasitoid fig wasp species (Chalcidoidea), developing within the inflorescences (syconia) of Ficus racemosa (Moraceae) in India, were determined and used to examine community structure and ecology. 2. Gallers were pro‐ovigenic (all eggs are mature upon adult emergence) whereas parasitoids were synovigenic (eggs mature progressively during adult lifespan). Initial egg load was correlated with body size for some species, and there was a trade‐off between egg number and egg size across all species. Although all species completed their development and left the syconium concurrently, they differed in their adult and pre‐adult lifespans. Providing sucrose solutions increased parasitoid lifespan but had no effect on the longevity of some galler species. While feeding regimes and body size affected longevity in most species, an interaction effect between these variables was detected for only one species. 3. Life‐history traits of wasp species exhibited a continuum in relation to their arrival sequence at syconia for oviposition during syconium development, and therefore reflected their ecology. The largest number of eggs, smallest egg sizes, and shortest longevities were characteristic of the earliest‐arriving galling wasps at the smallest, immature syconia; the converse characterised the later‐arriving parasitoids at the larger, already parasitised syconia. Thus life history is an important correlate of community resource partitioning and can be used to understand community structure. 4. This is the first comprehensive study of life‐history traits in a fig wasp community. The comparative approach revealed constraints and flexibility in trait evolution.  相似文献
