Acoustic sensing and signal processing techniques for monitoring milk fouling cleaning operations

Large resource investments are necessary in order to minimize the limiting problems arising from food industrial intensive productivity. One of the most challenging concerns is the cleaning status uncertainty among heat transfer areas in dairy heat exchangers, since the effectiveness of this process cannot be easily validated. The present study aimed to develop a low‐power ultrasound sensing method for monitoring the removal of milk fouling deposits along cleaning processes inside an experimental plate heat exchanger structure, connected to a milk piping unit. For that purpose, signal processing, namely acoustic feature extraction, over different wave patterns combined with artificial neural network techniques was used. Measurements were taken in pulse‐echo mode with a handmade 4 MHz ultrasound transducer. While fouling deposits having initial average thickness values of 250 μm (34.5 ± 4.5 mg/cm²) were removed, the acoustic transmissivity increased. Results showed that the signal features follow the expected trends in both, clean and fouled cases, within right guess detection accuracies above 80%. Therefore, when calibrated well, this could be a very sensitive and noninvasive technique for material characterization, as well as a suitable validation method for industrial cleaning cycle operation optimization that could significantly reduce the associated costs.     

Absence of Tau triggers age‐dependent sciatic nerve morphofunctional deficits and motor impairment

Dementia is the cardinal feature of Alzheimer's disease (AD), yet the clinical symptoms of this disorder also include a marked loss of motor function. Tau abnormal hyperphosphorylation and malfunction are well‐established key events in AD neuropathology but the impact of the loss of normal Tau function in neuronal degeneration and subsequent behavioral deficits is still debated. While Tau reduction has been increasingly suggested as therapeutic strategy against neurodegeneration, particularly in AD, there is controversial evidence about whether loss of Tau progressively impacts on motor function arguing about damage of CNS motor components. Using a variety of motor‐related tests, we herein provide evidence of an age‐dependent motor impairment in Tau?/? animals that is accompanied by ultrastructural and functional impairments of the efferent fibers that convey motor‐related information. Specifically, we show that the sciatic nerve of old (17–22‐months) Tau?/? mice displays increased degenerating myelinated fibers and diminished conduction properties, as compared to age‐matched wild‐type (Tau+/+) littermates and younger (4–6 months) Tau?/? and Tau+/+ mice. In addition, the sciatic nerves of Tau?/? mice exhibit a progressive hypomyelination (assessed by g‐ratio) specifically affecting large‐diameter, motor‐related axons in old animals. These findings suggest that loss of Tau protein may progressively impact on peripheral motor system.     

Calculating the local nonequilibrium configurational entropy in quasi-one-dimensional heat conduction

In a quasi-one-dimensional (QOD) system the particles remain ordered from left to right allowing the association of a volume element to the particle which on average resides there. Thus the properties of that single particle give the local densities in the volume element. With reservoirs of different temperatures connected to each end of the system a steady heat current with an anomalous thermal conductivity results. The largest contribution to the local configurational entropy density is calculated from two-particle correlation functions which vary locally within the nonequilibrium system. This contribution to the local configurational entropy is calculated for a QOD system in a nonequilibrium steady state.     

Two novel methods to assess ulnar nerve conduction across the elbow

PurposeNerve conduction studies (NCS) are used as an electrodiagnostic method for diagnosing ulnar neuropathy of the elbow (UNE). The purpose of this study was to determine normal and reliability values of across elbow ulnar nerve conduction velocity using two novel methods.MethodsUlnar nerve conduction studies were performed on both upper extremities of 104 healthy subjects. Two different techniques were used to evaluate ulnar nerve function at the elbow: Technique 1 (W-BE-AE) determined mixed NCV across the elbow indirectly while Technique 2 (BE-AE) measured conduction time directly. Twenty subjects returned within one week for re-testing to generate reliability data.ResultsThe mean NCV for the BE-AE segment using Technique 1 was 59.68 m/s (±8.91 m/s). The mean peak latency for the BE-AE segment using Technique 2 was 2.03 ms (±0.24 ms). The interrater and intrarater reliability intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) for Technique 1 was 0.454 and 0.756, respectively. For Technique 2, the interrater and intrarater reliability ICC was 0.76 and 0.814, respectively.ConclusionThis study identified normal values for ulnar nerve conduction across the elbow with reliability ranging from poor to good, depending on the technique. These two novel techniques provide alternative methods to traditional techniques to measure ulnar nerve conduction across the elbow.     

基于遥感技术的城市下垫面参数与热环境关系的研究——以北京市朝阳区为例

城市热岛（UHI）不仅直接关系到城市人居环境质量和居民健康状况,同时还对城市能源消耗、生态系统过程演变、生物物候以及城市经济可持续发展有着深远的影响。以北京市朝阳区2002—2017年夏季4期Landsat系列遥感影像为数据,采用大气反演法,对15年间朝阳区城市地表温度（LST）时空变化进行分析,发现15年间朝阳区城市热岛比例指数上升迅速,热岛效应逐年加剧。进一步研究表明,城市地表温度与归一化植被指数（NDVI）及归一化建筑指数（NDBI）密切相关：地表温度与NDBI正相关,NDBI指数每升高0.1,地表升温0.79~2.37°C;与NDVI指数负相关,NDVI指数每提高0.1,地表降温0.4~0.77°C。本研究可为城市规划建设与城市绿地营建提供科学具体的参考指导依据,并促进生态可持续发展与人居环境改善。     

Heat shock proteins: A dual carrier-adjuvant for an anti-drug vaccine against heroin

Heroin is a highly abused opioid that has reached epidemic status within the United States. Yet, existing therapies to treat addiction are inadequate and frequently result into rates of high recidivism. Vaccination against heroin offers a promising alternative therapeutic option but requires further development to enhance the vaccine’s performance. Hsp70 is a conserved protein with known immunomodulatory properties and is considered an excellent immunodominant antigen. Within an antidrug vaccine context, we envisioned Hsp70 as a potential dual carrier-adjuvant, wherein immunogenicity would be increased by co-localization of adjuvant and antigenic drug hapten. Recombinant Mycobacterium tuberculosis Hsp70 was appended with heroin haptens and the resulting immunoconjugate granted anti-heroin antibody production and blunted heroin-induced antinociception. Moreover, Hsp70 as a carrier protein surpassed our benchmark Her-KLH cocktail through antibody-mediated blockade of 6-acetylmorphine, the main mediator of heroin’s psychoactivity. The work presents a new avenue for exploration in the use of hapten-Hsp70 conjugates to elicit anti-drug immune responses.     

Investigation of B,C-ring truncated deguelin derivatives as heat shock protein 90 (HSP90) inhibitors for use as anti-breast cancer agents

On the basis of deguelin, a series of the B,C-ring truncated surrogates with N-substituted amide linkers were investigated as HSP90 inhibitors. The structure activity relationship of the template was studied by incorporating various substitutions on the nitrogen of the amide linker and examining their HIF-1α inhibition. Among them, compound 57 showed potent HIF-1α inhibition and cytotoxicity in triple-negative breast cancer lines in a dose-dependent manner. Compound 57 downregulated expression and phosphorylation of major client proteins of HSP90 including AKT, ERK and STAT3, indicating that its antitumor activity was derived from the inhibition of HSP90 function. The molecular modeling of 57 demonstrated that 57 bound well to the C-terminal ATP-binding pocket in the open conformation of the hHSP90 homodimer with hydrogen bonding and pi-cation interactions. Overall, compound 57 is a potential antitumor agent for triple-negative breast cancer as a HSP90 C-terminal inhibitor.     

冰川退缩地26种丛藓科植物叶中肋细胞结构的研究

该研究应用离析方法,并通过光学显微镜对新疆天山一号冰川退缩地的26种丛藓科植物叶片中肋细胞的形态结构进行比较分析,结果表明:(1)丛藓科植物叶片的中肋细胞的长、宽和细胞壁厚度、纹孔场数目及细胞端尾数目在一定程度上存在着差异,反映出各中肋细胞的功能及导水作用在同属及不同属植物之间存在一定的差异。(2)中肋细胞的端尾多以及细胞壁的波状结构都具有增强细胞间的联系、提高机械固着和支撑作用。(3)不同生境下,中肋细胞侧壁的纹孔场数目能有效控制导水和物质交换的速度。这些特征可能都是冰川地区苔藓植物对恶劣生境的积极响应,具有一定的生态学和分类学意义。     

Freeze-dried platelets promote hepatocyte proliferation in mice

In recent years, platelets are reported to promote liver, as well as bone regeneration and dermal wound healing. Platelets are required not only for thrombocytopenia treating but also for regenerative therapy. Platelets cannot be stored beyond three days, therefore, shortage of fresh platelets sometimes occurs. To preserve platelets for a long duration without degrading growth factors, a freeze-dried technique is required. We report here that platelets can be preserved by freeze-drying, using a programmed freezing method to avoid intracellular ice crystal formation. Freeze-dried platelets kept their morphological countenance and response with the agonist of thrombin was well maintained. Freeze-dried platelets stored adenine nucleotides, PDGF, and IGF-1 the same as those of fresh platelets. Freeze dried platelets also preserved their proliferative effect on hepatocytes identical to that of fresh platelets. These results of our study suggest that freeze dried platelets will obviate the storage problem of fresh platelets.     

Glucose repression over Saccharomyces cerevisiae glycerol/H+ symporter gene STL1 is overcome by high temperature

High temperature promotes an improved activity of the Saccharomyces cerevisiae glycerol/H(+) symporter encoded by STL1, which correlates well with Stl1p levels. This happens in both fermentable and respiratory metabolic growth conditions, though the induction in the latter is much higher. The relief of glucose repression by high temperature at the level of protein expression and activity (Stl1p) is reported for the first time. We reason that the glycerol internal levels fine-tuning, under heat-stress as in other physiological condition, can be achieved with the contribution of the tight regulation of the symporter.
