The influences of age and maximal aerobic capacity (VO2max) on serum lipoproteins with special regard to the concentration, composition and distribution of high density lipoprotein (HDL) subfractions were investigated in 51 healthy males of different characteristics: younger than 35 years, untrained (n = 14, mean age 28.2 years, SD 6.0; VO2max, 47.9 ml.kg-1.min-1, SD 5.8) and trained (n = 11, mean age 27.9 years, SD 4.3; VO2max, 61.1 ml.kg-1.min-1, SD 5.1), older than 50 years untrained (n = 14, mean age 58.9 years, SD 5.9, VO2max, 29.3 ml.kg-1.min-1, SD 5.3) and trained (n = 12, mean age 59.3 years, SD 7.2, VO2max, 45.7 ml.kg-1.min-1, SD 7.7). The fasting-state serum concentrations of total cholesterol, tri-acylglycerol and lipoprotein-cholesterol were measured. The HDL-subfractions were separated by density (rho) gradient ultracentrifugation. Concentrations of cholesterol, cholesterylester, tri-acylglycerol, phospholipids, apolipoprotein (apo) A-I and A-II were measured in the subfractions HDL2b: rho = 1.063-1.100 g.ml-1; HDL2al: rho = 1.00-1.110 g.ml-1; HDL2a2: rho = 1.110-1.150 g.ml-1; HDL3: rho = 1.150-1.210 g.ml-1. Elderly untrained subjects showed increased serum concentrations of total-, very low- and low density lipoprotein-cholesterol and elevated tri-acylglycerol levels. The HDL-cholesterol concentration was decreased, due to reduced concentrations of HDL2-subfractions. Significant changes in the composition of HDL2-subfractions were found in elderly untrained subjects. The HDL2-subfractions had more protein, a decreased apoA-I:A-II ratio and less phospholipids in comparison to HDL2-subfractions from younger untrained and trained, and elderly trained subjects.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Using data from the National Longitudinal Survey of Adolescent to Adult Health, we estimate the effect of peers’ alcohol consumption and alcohol prices on the drinking habits of high-school-age youth. We use the two-stage residual inclusion method to account for the endogeneity of peer drinking in nonlinear models. For our sample of high school students, we find that peer effects are statistically and economically significant regarding the choice to participate in drinking but are not significant for the frequency of drinking, including binge drinking. Regarding alcohol prices, even though we have good price variation in our sample, alcohol prices are not found to be significant. The results are important for policymakers who are considering policies to reduce underage drinking, as we conclude that no significant impact on underage drinking will result from low-tax states’ increasing excise taxes on alcohol so they are similar to those of high-tax states. Policymakers may choose to focus instead on the influence of peers and changing the social norm behavior.  相似文献

The relationships between absolute peak muscle power (W peak), muscle cross sectional area (CSAtot, i.e. the sum of both thigh and calf CSA) and muscle high energy phosphate concentration (adenosine 5-triphosphate [ATP] and phosphocreatine concentrations [PC]) were studied in 47 subjects classified into five groups: A, 10 sedentary (S) subjects aged 20–35 years; B, 9 S aged 35–50 years; C, 9 S aged more than 50 years; D, 13 children aged 8–13 years; and E, 6 athletes (top level volleyball players) aged 24 (SD 3) years. The W peak was measured during a maximal vertical high jump off both feet on a force platform. The CSAtot was measured anthropometrically. The [ATP] and [PC] were determined by 31Phosphorus nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. The W peak decreased with age, was 65% lower in D than in A, and 43% higher in E than in A. The CSAtot did not vary with age, was 45% smaller in D than in A, and 15% greater in E than in A. The [ATP] and [PC] were essentially the same in all groups. The changes observed in W peak were only partially accounted for by changes in CSAtot. Therefore, in addition to the variables investigated, other factors appear to have been involved in the determination of W peak with increasing age and training. An important role may be played by hormonal, particularly at puberty, and neural factors.  相似文献

A new set of signals for studying detectability of an X-ray imaging system is presented. The results obtained with these signals are intended to complement the NEQ results.The signals are generated from line spread profiles by progressively removing their lower frequency components and the resulting high frequency residues (HFRs) form the set of signals to be used in detectability studies. Detectability indexes for these HFRs are obtained using a non-prewhitening (NPW) observer and a series of edge images are used to obtain the HFRs, the covariance matrices required by the NPW model and the MTF and NPS used in NEQ calculations. The template used in the model is obtained by simulating the processes of blurring and sampling of the edge images. Comparison between detectability indexes for the HFRs and NEQ are carried out for different acquisition techniques using different beam qualities and doses.The relative sensitivity shown by detectability indexes using HFRs is higher than that of NEQ, especially at lower doses. Also, the different observers produce different results at high doses: while the ideal Bayesian observer used by NEQ distinguishes between beam qualities, the NPW used with the HFRs produces no differences between them.Delta functions used in HFR are the opposite of complex exponential functions in terms of their support in the spatial and frequency domains. Since NEQ can be interpreted as detectability of these complex exponential functions, detectability of HFRs is presented as a natural complement to NEQ in the performance assessment of an imaging system.  相似文献

摘要 目的:探讨高频振荡通气(HFOV)联合肺表面活性物质(PS)对治疗新生儿急性肺损伤/急性呼吸窘迫综合征(ALI/ARDS)的疗效及对肺动态顺应性的影响。方法:选择2018年1月至2020年12月我院新生儿科收治的160例ALI/ARDS患儿进行研究,按照随机数表法分为观察组和对照组,每组80例。对照组患儿给予常频通气(CMV)模式联合PS治疗,观察组患儿给予HFOV模式联合PS治疗。比较两组患儿一般治疗情况、治疗前后肺动态顺应性、动脉血氧分压(PaO2)、动脉二氧化氮分压(PaCO2)、氧合指数(OI)、血清肿瘤坏死因子-α(TNF-α)、白细胞介素(IL)-6、IL-10的变化,以及治疗期间并发症发生情况。结果:观察组胸片恢复正常时间、机械通气时间、氧暴露时间、ICU停留时间、住院时间结果均明显短于对照组(P<0.05),两组患儿病死率相比较,无统计学意义(P>0.05);治疗后12 h、24 h、48 h时,观察组肺动态顺应性及PaO2、OI结果明显高于对照组,PaCO2明显比对照组低,差异有统计学意义(P<0.05);治疗后48 h时,观察组血清TNF-α、IL-6水平均明显低于对照组,IL-10明显比对照组高,差异有统计学意义(P<0.05);两组治疗期间,呼吸机相关性肺损伤、颅内出血、气漏、呼吸道感染的总发生率比较,无统计学意义(P>0.05)。结论:HFOV联合PS治疗新生儿ALI/ARDS疗效明显,可有效改善患儿肺动态顺应性,促进血气分析指标恢复,且可降低炎症因子的表达,值得推广应用。  相似文献

Catalytic reforming is a refining process that converts naphthenes to aromatics by dehydrogenation to make higher octane gasoline blending components. A portion of this wide boiling range hydrocarbon stream can be separated by distillation and used for other purposes. One such application is a mixture of predominantly 9-carbon aromatic molecules (C9 aromatics, primarily isomers of ethyltoluene and trimethylbenzene), which is removed and used as a solvent — high-flash aromatic naphtha. A program was initiated to assess the toxicological properties of high-flash aromatic naphtha since there may be human exposure through inhalation or external body contact. The current study was conducted partly to assess the potential for mutagenic activity and also to assist in an assessment of carcinogenic potential. The specific tests utilized included the Salmonella/mammalian microsome mutagenicity assay, the hypoxanthine-guanine phosphoribosyl transferase (HGPRT) forward mutation assay in CHO cells, in vitro chromosome aberration and sister chromatid exchange (SCE) assays in CHO cells, and an in vivo chromosome aberration assay in rat bone marrow.There was no evidence that high-flash aromatic naphtha was either a gene or chromosomal mutagen. Estuarine ecosystems are characterized by high zooplanktonic biomasses, essentially constituted by copepods and mysids whose nutritional requirements are mainly provided by phytoplankton, an easily available carbon form. The Gironde estuary is characterized by high turbidities which limit light penetration in the water column and therefore primary production. Consequently, primary production is low and its availability for higher trophic level is very limited. The main goal of this study was to characterize the total vegetal particulate organic matter (POM) in high turbidity zones of the Gironde estuary during summer (a critical period characterized by high heterotrophic bacterial degradation and high zooplanktonic biomasses) and to analyse its utilization by zooplankton, using prey/predator experiments and trophic biomarkers (fatty acids). The specific goals were to define (i) how vegetal POM was exploited by the different zooplanktonic groups (protozoa, copepods and mysids) and (ii) which alternative preys could be used when vegetal POM was not sufficient to ensure their nutritional requirements.Chlorophyll biomass was very low in the MTZ during summer 2002 (0.48 ± 0.03 mg m− 3). Total zooplankton grazing was low (19% d− 1) probably due to a large contribution of detritus originating from terrestrial plants in vegetal POM compared to phytoplankton. The highest grazing pressure was exercised by the mysid Mesopodopsis slabberi due to its high abundances and by its almost entirely herbivorous diet (phytoplankton and small terrestrial detritus). Grazing rates (19.7 ± 4.2 and 9.6 μgC cop− 1 d− 1 for juveniles and adults, respectively) seemed to be sufficient to satisfy their daily carbon requirement. Grazing rate of the copepod Eurytemora affinis (139 ngC cop− 1 d− 1) seemed to be insufficient to cover its nutritional requirements and the copepods probably needed to complete a great part of their diet from protozoa. Grazing rates of the mysid Neomysis integer (24.7 ± 0.01 and 20.89 ± 8.45 μgC cop− 1 d− 1 for juveniles and adults, respectively) were higher than those of M. slabberi when feeding only on phytoplankton. However, when other preys were introduced in its environment, N. integer only fed on the copepod E. affinis with a preference for nauplii. The study revealed the great importance of protozoa and bacteria in the trophic transfers between vegetal POM and zooplankton in the MTZ during summer, despite the low protozoa grazing pressure on vegetal POM (3.1%). The detritic food chain probably implies various trophic transfers with little direct relationships between vegetal POM and zooplankton.  相似文献

Basal metabolic rate (BMR) is probably the most studied aspect of energy metabolism in vertebrate endotherms. Numerous papers have explored its mass allometry, phylogenetic and ecological relationships, and ontogeny. Implicit in many of these studies (and explicit in some) is the view that BMR responds to selection, which requires repeatability and heritability. However, BMR is highly plastic in response to numerous behavioral and environmental factors and there are surprisingly few data on its repeatability. Moreover, the mechanistic underpinnings of variation in BMR are unclear, despite considerable research. We studied BMR repeatability in deer mice (Peromyscus maniculatus) across intervals of 30–60 days, and also examined the influence of birth altitude (3,800 m versus 340 m) and temperature acclimation (to ∼5 or ∼20°C) on BMR, and the relationship between BMR and organ size. Neither acclimation temperature nor natal altitude alone influenced BMR, but the combination of birth at high altitude and cold acclimation significantly increased BMR. Few visceral organ masses were correlated to BMR and most were inconsistent across natal altitudes and acclimation temperatures, indicating that no single organ ‘controls’ variation in BMR. In several treatment groups, the mass of the ‘running motor’ (combined musculoskeletal mass) was negatively correlated to BMR and the summed mass of visceral organs was positively correlated to BMR. We found no repeatability of BMR in any treatment group. That finding—in sharp contrast to high repeatability of BMR in several other small endotherms—suggests little potential for direct selection to drive BMR evolution in deer mice.  相似文献

Viral contamination of mammalian cell cultures in GMP manufacturing facility represents a serious safety threat to biopharmaceutical industry. Such adverse events usually require facility shutdown for cleaning/decontamination, and thus result in significant loss of production and/or delay of product development. High temperature short time (HTST) treatment of culture media has been considered as an effective method to protect GMP facilities from viral contaminations. Log reduction factor (LRF) has been commonly used to measure the effectiveness of HTST treatment for viral inactivation. However, in order to prevent viral contaminations, HTST treatment must inactivate all infectious viruses (100%) in the medium batch since a single virus is sufficient to cause contamination. Therefore, LRF may not be the most appropriate indicator for measuring the effectiveness of HTST in preventing viral contaminations. We report here the use of the probability to achieve complete (100%) virus inactivation to assess the effectiveness of HTST treatment. By using mouse minute virus (MMV) as a model virus, we have demonstrated that the effectiveness of HTST treatment highly depends upon the level of viral contaminants in addition to treatment temperature and duration. We believe that the statistical method described in this report can provide more accurate information about the power and potential limitation of technologies such as HTST in our shared quest to mitigate the risk of viral contamination in manufacturing facilities.  相似文献

1. Temperature and oxygen are recognised as the main drivers of altitudinal limits of species distributions. However, the two factors are linked, and both decrease with altitude, why their effects are difficult to disentangle. 2. This was experimentally addressed using aquatic macroinvertebrates; larvae of Andesiops (Ephemeroptera), Claudioperla, (Plecoptera), Scirtes (Coleoptera) and Anomalocosmoecus (Trichoptera), and the amphipod Hyalella in an Ecuadorian glacier‐fed stream (4100–4500 m a.s.l.). The following were performed: (i) quantitative benthic sampling at three sites to determine altitudinal patterns in population densities, (ii) transplants of the five taxa upstream of their natural altitudinal limit to test the short‐term (14 days) effect on survival, and (iii) in situ experiments of locomotory activity as a proxy for animal response to relatively small differences in temperature (5 °C vs. 10 °C) and oxygen saturation (55% vs. 62%). 3. The transplant experiment reduced survival to a varying degree among taxa, but Claudioperla survived well at a site where it did not naturally occur. In the in situ experiment, Scirtes and Hyalella decreased their activity at lower oxygen saturation, whereas Andesiops and Anomalocosmoecus did so at a low temperature. The decrease in activity from a high to a low temperature and oxygen for the five taxa was significantly correlated with their mortality in the transplant experiment. 4. Together the present experiments indicate that even relatively small differences in temperature and oxygen may produce effects explaining ecological patterns, and depending on the taxon, either water temperature or oxygen saturation, without clear interacting effects, are important drivers of altitudinal limits.  相似文献
