As toluene is an organic solvent, its cytotoxic effect on the cell is known. Similarly, it has been demonstrated that many of the chemical agents that enter the body through smoking have cytotoxic and genotoxic effects on the cells. In this study, the effects of these two toxic agents, both separately and in combination, on leukocyte counts, lymphocyte counts and mitotic index values were investigated. The study was carried out on blood samples of 100 males, divided into four groups: 25 non-smokers and 25 smokers, 25 toluene-exposed non-smokers and 25 no toluene-exposed smokers. The blood cell values of the blood samples were determined automatically on the hemogram apparatus. In addition slides of the blood samples were prepared according to the chromosome analysis procedure and the mitotic index values were determined through microscopy. The possible effects of smoking and toluene on lymphocyte life span was considered by correlating mitotic index values with lymphocyte counts in the same way for each of the subgroups. Results revealed that leukocyte counts and mitotic index values were higher in the smokers than the non-smokers whether or not they had been exposed to toluene. In addition the results indicate that lymphocyte life span may be shortened due to cigarette smoking and toluene exposure. 相似文献

Effect of copper sulfate on the immune response and susceptibility to Vibrio alginolyticus in the white shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
White shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei (Boone) held in 35 per thousand seawater were challenged with Vibrio alginolyticus at a dose of 3 x 10(5) colony-forming units (cfu) shrimp(-1), and then placed in water containing concentrations of Cu2+ at 0 (control), 1, 5, 10 and 20 mg l(-1). Mortality of shrimp in 5, 10 and 20 mg l(-1) Cu2+ was significantly higher than those in 1 mg l(-1) Cu2+ and the control solution after 24-96 h. In another experiment, L. vannamei which had been exposed to control, 1, 5, 10 and 20 mg l(-1) Cu2+ for 24, 48 and 96 h were examined for THC (total haemocyte count), phenoloxidase activity, respiratory burst (release of superoxide anion), phagocytic activity and clearance efficiency to V. alginolyticus. Copper concentrations at 1 mg l(-1) or greater for 24h resulted in decreased THC, phenoloxidase activity, phagocytic activity and clearance efficiency, whereas copper concentration at 20 mg l(-1) caused significant increase in respiratory burst of L. vannamei. In conclusion, concentration of Cu2+ at 1 mg l(-1) or greater increased the susceptibility of L. vannamei to V. alginolyticus infection by a depression in immune ability. The release of superoxide anion by L. vannamei exposed to 20 mg l(-1) Cu2+ was considered to be cytotoxic to the host. 相似文献

The total number of microorganisms and rates of microbial processes of the carbon cycle were determined in snow, sea ice, water, and seafloor sediments of the northern part of the Barents Sea from September to October, 1998. The explorations were carried out in two areas: along the transection from Franz Josef Land to Victoria Island and along the continental slope region covered with solid ice at latitude 81°–82° N and longitude 37°–39° E. At the time of study, the ice cover was represented by thick one-year old ice (up to 1.2 m), perennial ice (up to 1.85 m), and pack ice. The number of bacteria in the snow cover, sea ice, and seawater was 12 to 14, 50 to 110, and 10 to 240 × 103 cells/ml, respectively. Rates of dark CO2 assimilation, glucose utilization, and methane oxidation by bacteria were determined. The highest rate of microbial processes was found in samples of the lowermost newly formed sea ice. The lowest level of activity for all processes was observed in melted snow water. A direct relation was shown between the concentration of Corg, the bacterial biomass, and the values of 13Corg in mixtures of melted snow and ice. The number of microorganisms and rates of microbial processes in seafloor sediments measured at the stations on the continental slope are comparable to those in the central part of the Barents Sea and the northern part of the Kara Sea. 相似文献

This psychoneuroimmunological study examined the effects of visualization, or mental imagery, on immune system response, specifically, on depressed white blood cell (WBC) count in 20 medical patients. Subjects were 10 females and 10 males and included medical patients diagnosed with cancer, AIDS, viral infections, and other medical problems associated with depressed WBC count. Results indicated significant increases in WBC count for all patients over a 90-day period, after a predicted initial decrease in WBC count. No significant age or sex differences were found. 相似文献

Polyandrous females are expected to discriminate among males through postcopulatory cryptic mate choice. Yet, there is surprisingly little unequivocal evidence for female-mediated cryptic sperm choice. In species in which nuptial gifts facilitate mating, females may gain indirect benefits through preferential storage of sperm from gift-giving males if the gift signals male quality. We tested this hypothesis in the spider Pisaura mirabilis by quantifying the number of sperm stored in response to copulation with males with or without a nuptial gift, while experimentally controlling copulation duration. We further assessed the effect of gift presence and copulation duration on egg-hatching success in matings with uninterrupted copulations with gift-giving males. We show that females mated to gift-giving males stored more sperm and experienced 17% higher egg-hatching success, compared with those mated to no-gift males, despite matched copulation durations. Uninterrupted copulations resulted in both increased sperm storage and egg-hatching success. Our study confirms the prediction that the nuptial gift as a male signal is under positive sexual selection by females through cryptic sperm storage. In addition, the gift facilitates longer copulations and increased sperm transfer providing two different types of advantage to gift-giving in males. 相似文献

松墨天牛是重大森林植物检疫性病害——松材线虫病的主要媒介昆虫。本研究于2005年8月~2006年8月从福建、江西两省共110个林分样区(其中松林88个样区)采集土壤样品330份,采用选择性培养基分离土壤中的金龟子绿僵菌。从21个样区的26份土样中分离出的金龟子绿僵菌占采集样区的19.1%和样品的7.9%,成菌落数(CFU)500~72500CFU/g,表明金龟子绿僵菌在森林土壤中有较为广泛的分布。对分离到的9个产孢量高的菌株,采用浸渍法(1×107孢子/mL)接种3~4龄健康松墨天牛幼虫,采用跗节接种法接种2~15日龄健康成虫,测定其致病力。结果表明,MaYTTR-03、MaYTTR-04菌株对松墨天牛幼虫和成虫均有较高致病力,表现出良好的生防潜力。 相似文献

We propose a state space model for analyzing equally or unequally spaced longitudinal count data with serial correlation. With a log link function, the mean of the Poisson response variable is a nonlinear function of the fixed and random effects. The random effects are assumed to be generated from a Gaussian first order autoregression (AR(1)). In this case, the mean of the observations has a log normal distribution. We use a combination of linear and nonlinear methods to take advantage of the Gaussian process embedded in a nonlinear function. The state space model uses a modified Kalman filter recursion to estimate the mean and variance of the AR(1) random error given the previous observations. The marginal likelihood is approximated by numerically integrating out the AR(1) random error. Simulation studies with different sets of parameters show that the state space model performs well. The model is applied to Epileptic Seizure data and Primary Care Visits Data. Missing and unequally spaced observations are handled naturally with this model. 相似文献
