The responses of antennal taste sensilla of the ground beetle Pterostichus aethiops to 100mM Na(+)-salts and their mixtures with 1 and 10mM NaOH were compared. An increase in pH by 0.3-0.6 units in 100mM Na(+)-salt solutions, caused by the content of 1mM NaOH, was too small, except for alkaline Na(2)HPO(4), to influence the firing rate of the cation cell and pH cell significantly. However, different sensitivity of the two cells to increased pH was clearly demonstrated when the concentration of NaOH in 100mM stimulating salt solutions was increased to 10mM. Increasing pH by 1.2-2 units caused the 1st s firing rate to increase by 140-1050% and 0-26% in the pH cell and cation cell, respectively. Compared to the buffer series method used for identification of the pH receptors in ground beetles earlier, considerably stronger responses of the pH cell to a similar increase in pH were observed when the NaOH method was used for testing. At the same time, undesirable changes in salt ions concentration that occur when stimulating solutions differing by 1-2 pH units are prepared were much smaller using the latter method. Behavioural and ecological relevance of the results is discussed. 相似文献

When resources are patchily distributed in an environment, behavioral ecologists frequently turn to ideal free distribution (IFD) models to predict the spatial distribution of organisms. In these models, predictions about distributions depend upon two key factors: the quality of habitat patches and the nature of competition between consumers. Surprisingly, however, no IFD models have explored the possibility that consumers modulate their competitive efforts in an evolutionarily stable manner. Instead, previous models assume that resource acquisition ability and competition are fixed within species or within phenotypes. We explored the consequences of adaptive modulation of competitive effort by incorporating tug-of-war theory into payoff equations from the two main classes of IFD models (continuous input (CI) and interference). In the models we develop, individuals can increase their share of the resources available in a patch, but do so at the costs of increased resource expenditures and increased negative interactions with conspecifics. We show how such models can provide new hypotheses to explain what are thought to be deviations from IFDs (e.g., the frequent observation of fewer animals than predicted in "good" patches of habitat). We also detail straightforward predictions made uniquely by the models we develop, and we outline experimental tests that will distinguish among alternatives. 相似文献

Forest canopies support diverse assemblages of free-living mites. Recent studies suggest mite species complementarity between
canopy and terrestrial soils is as high as 80–90%. However, confounding variation in habitat quality and resource patchiness
between ground and canopy has not been controlled in previous comparative studies. We used experimental litter bags with standardized
microhabitat structure and resource quality to contrast the colonization dynamics of 129 mite species utilizing needle accumulations
on the ground vs in the canopy of Abies amabilis trees in a temperate montane forest in Canada. Mite abundance and species richness per litter bag were five to eight times
greater on the ground than in the canopy, and composition differed markedly at family-, genus-, and species-level. Seventy-seven
species (57%) were restricted to either ground or canopy litter bags, but many of these species were rare (n<5 individuals). Of 49 ‘common’ species, 30.6% were entirely restricted to one habitat, which is considerably lower than most
published estimates. In total, 87.5% of canopy specialists had rare vagrants on the ground, whereas only 51.9% of ground specialists
had rare vagrants in the canopy. Canonical correspondence analysis of mite community structure showed high species turnover
through time and a high degree of specialization for early-, mid-, and late-successional stages of litter decomposition, in
both ground and canopy mites. In addition, distinct assemblages of ground-specialist mites dominated each elevation (800,
1000, and 1200 m), whereas few canopy-specialist mites had defined elevational preferences. This suggests that canopy mites
may have greater tolerance for wide variation in environmental conditions than soil mites. The degree of species turnover
between adjacent mountains also differed markedly, with 46.5% turnover of ground species, but 63.4% turnover of canopy species
between the two montane areas. While ground and canopy assemblages are similar in total biodiversity, it appears that local
mite richness (alpha diversity) is higher on the ground, whereas species turnover between sites (beta diversity) is higher
in the canopy.

The influence of temperature and host availability on the host exploitation strategies of sexual and asexual parasitic wasps of the same species 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
In the hymenopteran parasitoid Venturia canescens, asexual (obligate thelytoky not induced by Wolbachia bacteria) and sexual (arrhenotokous) wasps coexist in field conditions despite the demographic cost incurred due to the production of males by sexual females. Arrhenotoky predominates in field conditions, whereas populations in indoor conditions (mills, granaries) are exclusively thelytokous. These differences in the relative abundance of the two modes of reproduction between environments suggest that the individuals of each reproductive mode may have developed strategies adapted to the conditions prevailing in each kind of habitat. The two environments contrast in temperature variability and in the spatial heterogeneity of host availability. In this study, we considered the combined effect of temperature and host availability on host patch exploitation by thelytokous and arrhenotokous V. canescens. As expected, arrhenotokous females were more sensitive to temperature changes. If the temperature decreased before foraging, they remained longer and exploited patches more thoroughly. This is consistent with the expected behaviour of parasitoids in response to signs of unfavourable conditions that entail increasing risk of time limitation or a reduced probability of attaining further patches. Both arrhenotokous and thelytokous females increased patch exploitation with host availability. However, unexpectedly, we found no difference in the way the two types of wasp responded to differences in host availability. Differences in the strategies adopted under different environmental conditions may indicate divergence of niche-specific life history traits between the two modes of reproduction. Niche displacement may partly account for the coexistence of these two modes of reproduction at a geographical scale. 相似文献

Conspecific attraction is the preferential settlement into habitat patches with conspecifics. To be a good proximate strategy, fitness gains from settling with conspecifics must outweigh the costs of higher conspecific densities, such as intraspecific competition. Two types of benefits have been proposed to explain conspecific attraction: Allee effects (i.e., positive density dependence) and conspecific cueing (using conspecifics as an indicator of habitat quality). I present empirical evidence for conspecific attraction in the settlement of the porcelain crab, Petrolisthes cinctipes Randall (Anomura: Porcellanidae). Previous work demonstrated that P. cinctipes experiences strong intraspecific competition and that both Allee effects and conspecific cueing are present in P. cinctipes life-history. I developed an empirically-based fitness model of the costs and benefits of settling with conspecifics. Based on this model, I simulated optimal settlement to habitat patches that varied in conspecific density and habitat quality, where the correlation between density and habitat quality determined the level of conspecific cueing. I tested whether Allee effects alone, conspecific cueing alone, or Allee effects and conspecific cueing together could provide an ultimate explanation for the proximate settlement behavior of P. cinctipes. The settlement simulation was consistent with empirical settlement only when Allee effects and conspecific cueing were both included. Three life-history features are critical to this conclusion: (1) fitness is maximized at intermediate density, (2) fitness depends on the decisions of previous settlers, and (3) conspecific density provides good information about habitat quality. The quality of information garnered from conspecifics determines whether conspecific attraction is a good proximate strategy for settlement. I present a graphical illustration demonstrating how Allee effects and conspecific cueing work together to influence fitness, providing a conceptual framework for other systems.Electronic Supplementary Material Supplementary material is available for this article at and is accessible for authorized users. 相似文献

A study on Eurasian otter was conducted in order to establish if feeding ecology and breeding of this European freshwater
top predator were affected by the habitat complexity or stability. The work was based on the comparison of contrasting environmental
settings. Significant gradients were found for otter diet parameters and breeding, both also changing according to habitat
gradient patterns (water capacity and permanence during droughts, habitat stability, and habitat complexity). The otter diet
was less diverse in the most stable (and complex) habitats, eating more fish. Otters also breed more regularly in such more
stable courses, with more suitable fish availability. The step toward lower habitat stability can put otters in a less advantageous
position in front of generalist predators, foraging more frequently outside or in the edge of aquatic ecosystems. Implications
for otters and other similar top predator’s conservation are discussed. 相似文献

This study was carried out to develop and apply a fish-based biotic integrity index to assess lowland streams in a highly
deforested region of the Upper Paraná River basin. Fifty-six first-order segments were randomly selected for environmental
and fish evaluation. Because previous analysis had identified the main type of effect on the streams of the region as physical
habitat degradation, 22 qualitatively biological attributes were selected and tested over a physical condition gradient between
reference and degraded sites. Sensitivity and redundancy of each attribute revealed that five metrics were adequate for discriminating
higher quality from degraded sites. Of the fifty-six streams assessed, one (2%) was classified as good, four (7%) as fair,
ten (18%) as poor, and forty-one (73%) as very poor, indicating that, on a regional scale, many aspects of biological integrity
are altered, indicative of serious degradation. Considering that first-order segments amount to 11,000 km in total, it is
noticeable that 10,000 km of the stream segments have no more than half of the expected conditions, indicative of poor or
very poor biotic integrity conditions. Possible strategies of mitigating this scenario are discussed.

To elucidate the seed–seedling conflict and the process of habitat choices during the expansion of S. alterniflora, densities of seeds and seedlings in three different habitats, foreland, Spartina meadow, and canopy gap patch, were measured. Statistical analyses of these measurements were performed to investigate the
interaction between seeds or seedlings and environmental factors. Also, the process of habitat choice during the expansion
of S. alterniflora was explored. The results show that, in the upper soil seed bank (0–5 cm), both the ratio of germinated seeds and the ratio
of survival seedlings to total seeds do not differ significantly among the three habitats. However, in the lower soil seed
bank (5–10 cm), these ratios differ significantly, suggesting the seed–seedling conflict of S. alterniflora generally occurs in the lower soil seed bank. The remarkable conflict occurs in the meadow habitat. Greenhouse experiments
indicate that the germination rate decreases significantly and the mortality of pre-emerged seedlings increases significantly
with increasing burial depth. The maximal burial depth of emerged seedlings varies with sediment types. Comparisons of burial
depth effects on seedling height, mesocotyl length, coleoptile length, and root length show that the major responses of S. alterniflora pre-emerged seedlings to the burial treatments are the elongation of coleoptiles and mesocotyls, which favor seedling survival
by enhancing aeration and accelerating emergence. These results suggest that burial treatment is a key selection factor, which
leads to the seed–seedling conflict in recruitment of S. alterniflora population, and directly affects the expansion rate and the area infected by S. alterniflora.

We investigated the assemblage structure of fishes associated with different habitats (inshore mud, shell bank, and offshore
mud) over a drowned barrier island, Freeport Rocks Bathymetric High, on the inner continental shelf of the northwestern Gulf
of Mexico (NW Gulf). Density data from otter trawls were used to examine spatial (habitat and site) and temporal differences
in fish assemblage structure using multi- and univariate procedures. Eight species accounted for 69% of the total composition
and in order of decreasing abundance included shoal flounder (Syacium gunteri), dwarf sand perch (Diplectrum bivittatum), red snapper (Lutjanus campechanus), least puffer (Sphoeroides parvus), silver seatrout (Cynoscion nothus), largescale lizardfish (Saurida brasiliensis), silver jenny (Eucinostomus gula), and sand seatrout (Cynoscion arenarius). Multivariate results indicated fish assemblage structure differed among habitats (ANOSIM; Global R = 0.190, P < 0.001) and survey dates (ANOSIM; Global R = 0.541, P < 0.001); however, differences among sites were negligible (ANOSIM; Global R = −0.015, P = 0.749). Highest densities of dwarf sand perch and least puffer were found on the shell bank, while densities of shoal flounder,
largescale lizardfish, and silver jenny were highest on offshore mud. In addition, smallest sizes and highest densities of
six of the eight abundant species were found in July, suggesting an important period for juvenile fishes. Diversity indices
also varied relative to habitat with highest Shannon diversity (H′) and species richness (S) values for fishes associated with the shell bank. Results of this study highlight the importance
of a mosaic of habitat types to fish assemblages on a drowned barrier island in the NW Gulf.

Biotic indices based on soft-bottom macrozoobenthic communities are currently used throughout Europe to assess the ecological quality of coastal and transitional water bodies according to the European Water Framework Directive. However, the performance of the currently available biotic indices still has to be tested against a variety of different impact sources. In particular, physical perturbations have received much less attention than other kind of disturbances. This study consisted in testing the capacity of currently available uni- (BOPA, AMBI and BENTIX) and multivariate (M-AMBI) Biotic Indices to assess the ecological impact of the destruction of a Zostera noltii seagrass bed in Arcachon Bay (France) following sediment deposits. Changes of habitat after this physical perturbation were hardly assessed by any of these Biotic Indices whereas analysis of the benthic community showed drastic changes of structure following the perturbation and no recovery after 15 months. This study demonstrates that these Biotic Indices must be integrated into a multimetric approach which describes better the biological integrity of the benthic community by including a complementary set of metrics. A new multimetric approach, named MISS (Macrobenthic Index of Sheltered Systems) is proposed. MISS correctly highlighted the destruction of the seagrass beds, by using 16 metrics describing the biological integrity of the macrofauna. 相似文献
