We investigated the assemblage structure of fishes associated with different habitats (inshore mud, shell bank, and offshore mud) over a drowned barrier island, Freeport Rocks Bathymetric High, on the inner continental shelf of the northwestern Gulf of Mexico (NW Gulf). Density data from otter trawls were used to examine spatial (habitat and site) and temporal differences in fish assemblage structure using multi- and univariate procedures. Eight species accounted for 69% of the total composition and in order of decreasing abundance included shoal flounder (Syacium gunteri), dwarf sand perch (Diplectrum bivittatum), red snapper (Lutjanus campechanus), least puffer (Sphoeroides parvus), silver seatrout (Cynoscion nothus), largescale lizardfish (Saurida brasiliensis), silver jenny (Eucinostomus gula), and sand seatrout (Cynoscion arenarius). Multivariate results indicated fish assemblage structure differed among habitats (ANOSIM; Global R = 0.190, P < 0.001) and survey dates (ANOSIM; Global R = 0.541, P < 0.001); however, differences among sites were negligible (ANOSIM; Global R = −0.015, P = 0.749). Highest densities of dwarf sand perch and least puffer were found on the shell bank, while densities of shoal flounder, largescale lizardfish, and silver jenny were highest on offshore mud. In addition, smallest sizes and highest densities of six of the eight abundant species were found in July, suggesting an important period for juvenile fishes. Diversity indices also varied relative to habitat with highest Shannon diversity (H′) and species richness (S) values for fishes associated with the shell bank. Biotic indices based on soft-bottom macrozoobenthic communities are currently used throughout Europe to assess the ecological quality of coastal and transitional water bodies according to the European Water Framework Directive. However, the performance of the currently available biotic indices still has to be tested against a variety of different impact sources. In particular, physical perturbations have received much less attention than other kind of disturbances. This study consisted in testing the capacity of currently available uni- (BOPA, AMBI and BENTIX) and multivariate (M-AMBI) Biotic Indices to assess the ecological impact of the destruction of a Zostera noltii seagrass bed in Arcachon Bay (France) following sediment deposits. Changes of habitat after this physical perturbation were hardly assessed by any of these Biotic Indices whereas analysis of the benthic community showed drastic changes of structure following the perturbation and no recovery after 15 months. This study demonstrates that these Biotic Indices must be integrated into a multimetric approach which describes better the biological integrity of the benthic community by including a complementary set of metrics. A new multimetric approach, named MISS (Macrobenthic Index of Sheltered Systems) is proposed. MISS correctly highlighted the destruction of the seagrass beds, by using 16 metrics describing the biological integrity of the macrofauna.  相似文献

Understanding the habitat preferences of large marine vertebrates has only recently become tractable with the widespread availability of satellite telemetry for monitoring movements and behaviour. For many species with low population abundances, however, little progress has been made in identifying space use patterns. The endothermic porbeagle shark, Lamna nasus, has declined in the North Atlantic due to severe fishing pressure, with little evidence of recovery. One potential factor exacerbating population decline is area fidelity to coastal waters where fisheries are intensive. We tested for short-term area fidelity by attaching pop-up satellite-linked archival transmitters to four porbeagles in summer 2007, resulting in 175 days total tracking time covering an estimated 10,256 km distance. Throughout July and August the sharks occupied localised areas (8,602 – 90,153 km2) within the Celtic Sea, between the south-west UK, south-west Wales and southern Ireland. Only one shark was tracked into the autumn, when it moved into deep water off the continental shelf, then north towards colder latitudes. Sharks occupied a broad vertical depth range (0 – 552 m) and water temperatures (9° - 19 °C). Dives were made frequently from the surface to near the seabed in shelf areas, however, in shelf edge habitats extended periods of time were spent at depths > 300 m. Porbeagles showed considerable plasticity in diel depth changes within and between individuals and as a function of habitat type. In addition to no obvious day-night difference in depth occupation, some sharks showed reverse diel vertical migration (DVM) (dawn ascent – dusk descent) in well-mixed coastal waters whereas normal DVM (dawn descent – dusk ascent) characterised movements into deeper, thermally well-stratified waters. The variable behaviours may reflect the need for different search strategies depending on habitat and prey types encountered. These results show porbeagles are potentially vulnerable to fisheries throughout the summer when they aggregate, and that large scale movement across national boundaries identifies the need for international conservation measures.  相似文献

Postsettled age 0 Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) seek refuge from predation in eelgrass (Zostera marina) habitat within shallow, coastal nurseries. Laboratory and field experiments have demonstrated that predation risk on small fish is reduced in habitats of greater structure compared to less complex or barren environs. To determine if predation risk is linked to the areal extent of eelgrass coverage, we tested the hypothesis that predation risk of age 0 cod decreases with increasing eelgrass patch size. Predation on tethered age 0 cod (G. morhua and G. ogac) was quantified in eelgrass patches (1-80 m2) at three sites in northeastern Newfoundland, Canada, during September and October 1999 and 2000. Based on evidence of edge effects in terrestrial landscapes, we also tested the hypothesis that predation is elevated at ecotones separating eelgrass from adjacent barren mud substrate. We examined predation at the edge (i.e., 0 m) and both 5 and 10 m from this edge into and away from eelgrass cover along an 18 m long barren mud-gravel and eelgrass boundary, at two sites. Logistic regression analysis showed that the risk of predation, as measured by the odds ratio, increased with area over a small range of patch sizes (1-35 m2 in 1999). When the study was extended to a wider range of patch sizes (1-80 m2) in 2000, a parabolic relationship emerged, with patches on the order of 25 m2 providing the least safety and the largest patches (80 m2) providing the most safety. Predation on tethered cod was highest at the edge of eelgrass patches, compared with barren and eelgrass locations; predation generally decreased with distance from the eelgrass boundary. Our results are consistent with the hypothesis that predators are drawn to large patches of eelgrass because of increased prey numbers, that predators increase their success by searching edges, and that this results in greatest predation risk to prey in isolated patches of intermediate size.  相似文献

Red king crab (RKC) (Paralithodes camtschaticus) are generally associated with structurally complex habitats during the first 2 years of benthic life. In this first experimental laboratory study with a fish predator, survival of newly settled juvenile RKC was tested in eight different habitat treatments with varying amounts and types of physical structure, open sand, gravel bottom, and habitat islands. Video observations provided insights on habitat-mediated interactions between Pacific halibut predators (Hippoglossus stenolepis) and crab prey. Survival of RKC increased with amount of physical structure and was highest in the most heterogeneous habitat and in habitats characterized by high density patches. Predator activity decreased with increasing amount of structure, and attacks on RKC were correlated with predator activity. Low survival in open sand habitat was associated with both high attack rate and high capture success (captures per attack). Lower levels of capture success did not vary among the habitats containing algae and other complex physical structures, but attack rates declined with increasing amount of structure, and encounter rate (i.e., prey detection and attack) was the primary determinant of mortality. RKC were capable of detecting predators and adjusted their behavior to avoid predation by sheltering in dense microhabitat patches. Successful stock enhancement for greatly reduced populations of RKC in the Gulf of Alaska will depend upon placing seed stock in habitats with abundant protective habitat, and high quality microhabitats may serve as well as continuous cover.  相似文献

The variation of the berberine content in roots and stem bark of Berberis asiatica with altitude and edaphic conditions in the western Himalaya was estimated by HPLC. The comparative assessment revealed a significantly higher berberine content in roots than in stem barks. Moreover, the berberine content varied significantly with altitude and edaphic conditions both in root and stem bark samples. The populations growing at low altitude contained significantly more berberine than the ones growing at high altitude. Also the moisture and potassium (K) percentage of the soil significantly influenced the berberine content.  相似文献

在新疆墨玉县沙漠地区,设置4种治沙工程并比较了不同治沙工程措施培育土壤的效果。结果表明:不同治沙工程区土壤pH值和养分存在差异,pH值的大小顺序为天然稀疏植被封育区草方格固沙-人工林区人工林区多种植物配置区,且天然稀疏植被封育区土壤pH值显著高于其他3个工程区(P0.05);植物的定植时间影响了土壤养分,定植3年的人工林地土壤有机质、全氮、速效氮、全磷、有效磷、速效钾含量高于定植不久的草方格固沙-人工林地;多种植物配置区土壤有机质、全氮、速效氮、全磷和全钾含量都高于人工林区、草方格固沙-人工林区和天然稀疏植被封育区,但土壤速效磷和速效钾含量较其他工程区低,在该工程区应加强磷肥、钾肥的施用。  相似文献

Theoretical and empirical studies often show that within populations, individuals vary in their propensity to disperse. We aspired to understand how this behavioural variation is impacted by the distribution and pattern of food patches across a landscape. In a series of experiments we examined how inter-patch distance and the distribution of food patches influenced dispersal in wild-type strains of Drosophila melanogaster with natural allelic variants of the foraging (for) gene known to influence dispersal in this species. The ‘rover' strain was homozygous for the forR allele (more dispersive) whereas the ‘sitter' strain was homozygous for fors (less dispersive). We also assessed an outbred population of flies with an unknown dispersal propensity. Dispersal was assayed in a multi-patch lab arena (25 cells, 5 × 5 array). In the inter-patch distance trials, landscapes of two different sizes (small versus large) were used, both with food in all 25 cells. Dispersal was reduced in the large landscape relative to the small landscape for all three fly strains. Sitter dispersal was lowest relative to both rovers and the outbred flies, whose dispersal tendencies were similar. In the patch distribution trials, flies were assayed in landscapes with varying distribution and number of cells containing food. Dispersal generally increased as the number of patches with food increased, however, rovers and sitters adopted similar dispersal strategies when food was fixed and limited. Conversely, their strategies differed when the total amount of food increased with the number of patches. We find that both the inter-patch distance and distribution can influence dispersal. However, the effect of inter-patch distance and distribution on dispersals depends on genotype × environment interaction. Our findings highlight the importance of considering G × E when assessing how dispersal strategies and landscape dynamics influence the distribution of animal communities.  相似文献

2018年1月至11月对苏州城区8个片区23个监测点的河道断面进行每两月一次的后生浮游动物(轮虫、枝角类、桡足类)定量采集和分析,共鉴定出后生浮游动物127种,其中,轮虫48种,枝角类41种,桡足类38种。苏州城区河道后生浮游动物的年度优势种共24种,优势种生态位宽度变化范围在0.25~0.84之间,不同片区之间的生境异质性导致优势种生态位重叠指数差异较大。各片区的年均后生浮游动物总密度为(315.2±161.4)ind/L,年均后生浮游动物总生物量为(0.77±0.27)mg/L。不同片区间的生境异质性导致后生浮游动物现存量存在差异,轮虫在各片区的密度占比均达85.3%以上,成为绝对优势类群。典范对应分析(CCA)表明,电导率、水温、溶解氧、透明度、叶绿素a、总氮和总磷是影响后生浮游动物群落结构的重要环境因子。  相似文献

Anthropogenic habitat use is a major threat to biodiversity and is known to increase the abundance of generalist host species such as rodents, which are regarded as potential disease carriers. Parasites have an intimate relationship with their host and the surrounding environment and it is expected that habitat fragmentation will affect parasite infestation levels. We investigated the effect of habitat fragmentation on the ecto- and endoparasitic burdens of a broad niche small mammal, Rhabdomys pumilio, in the Western Cape Province, South Africa. Our aim was to look at the effects of fragmentation on different parasite species with diverse life history characteristics and to determine whether general patterns can be found. Sampling took place within pristine lowland (Fynbos/Renosterveld) areas and at fragmented sites surrounded and isolated by agricultural activities. All arthropod ectoparasites and available gastrointestinal endoparasites were identified. We used conditional autoregressive models to investigate the effects of habitat fragmentation on parasite species richness and abundance of all recovered parasites. Host density and body size were larger in the fragments. Combined ecto- as well as combined endoparasite taxa showed higher parasite species richness in fragmented sites. Parasite abundance was generally higher in the case of R. pumilio individuals in fragmented habitats but it appears that parasites that are more permanently associated with the host’s body and those that are host-specific show the opposite trend. Parasite life history is an important factor that needs to be considered when predicting the effects of habitat fragmentation on parasite and pathogen transmission.  相似文献
