We assessed the performance of biological indices developed for invertebrate assemblages occurring in arid zone streams: a multimetric index (MMI) and an O/E index of taxonomic completeness. Our overall goal was to advance our understanding of the factors that affect performance and interpretation of biological indices. Our specific objectives were to (1) develop biological indices that are insensitive to natural environmental gradients, (2) develop a general method to determine if the biological potential of an assessed site is adequately represented by the population of reference sites, (3) develop a robust method to select metrics for inclusion in MMIs that ensures maximum independence of metrics, and (4) determine if a fundamental sample property (the evenness of taxa counts within a sample) affects index performance. Random Forest modeling revealed that both individual metrics and taxa composition were strongly associated with natural environmental heterogeneity, which meant both the MMI and O/E index needed to be based on site-specific expectations. We produced a precise, responsive, and ecologically robust MMI by using principal components analysis to identify 7 statistically independent metrics from a list of 31 candidate assemblage-level metrics. However, the O/E index we developed was relatively imprecise compared with O/E indices developed for other regions. This imprecision may be the consequence of low predictability in local taxa composition associated with the relatively high spatial isolation of aquatic habitats within arid regions. We were also able to assess the likelihood that the biological potential of assessed sites were adequately characterized by the population of reference sites by developing and applying a multivariate, nearest-neighbor test that determined if an assessed site occurred within the environmental space of the reference site network. This approach is robust and applicable to all biological indices. We also demonstrate that the evenness of taxa counts within a sample is positively related to estimates of sample taxa richness and thus the scores of both indices. The relationship between richness and sample evenness can potentially compromise inferences regarding biological condition, and post hoc adjustments for the effects of evenness on index scores might be desirable. Further improvements in the performance and interpretation of biological indices will require simultaneous consideration of the effects of incomplete sampling on characterization of biological assemblages and the physical and biological factors that influence community assembly.  相似文献

Several species of migrant birds overlap in range on their wintering grounds with non-migrant conspecifics or other species that occupy a similar niche. Very little is known whether such overlap results in competition and subsequent habitat segregation since it is usually impossible to separate resident from migrant individuals. The Loggerhead Shrike (Lanius ludovicianus) is a declining grassland species in North America that winters in the southern United States and Mexico. Using stable-hydrogen isotope (δD) analysis of feathers, we identified resident and migrant shrikes wintering in northeastern Mexico based on a latitudinal gradient in precipitation and feather δD values. Indicator species analyses showed that migrants occupied areas where bare ground was less available than those occupied by residents, a pattern which held when a more restricted set of birds from the extremes of the δD distribution were considered. This provides evidence for conspecific habitat segregation. Habitat differences were also found between sites occupied by shrikes and apparently suitable but unoccupied sites. Shrikes occupied more open sites that contained shorter tall shrubs and huisache (Acacia farneasiana) and fewer tall shrubs, mesquite (Prosopsis glandulosa) and huisache than unoccupied sites. The availability of suitable winter habitat and the potential competition between migrants and residents may be factors that influence the population dynamics of migrant shrikes in North America.  相似文献

A comparative analysis of the habitats of Baldellia ranunculoides (subsp. ranunculoides and subsp. repens) and Baldellia alpestris (Alismataceae) was carried out across central and western Europe. Soil samples from 43 populations were analyzed and the composition of accompanying vegetation was analyzed by canonical correspondence and indicator species analysis. Significant differences in the habitat conditions and the accompanying vegetation were found between the three taxa. B. ranunculoides subsp. repens is growing in lowland water bodies on acidic substrates (pH 5–6.3) which are markedly richer in organic matter and poorer in cations, especially in Ca2+. B. ranunculoides s. str. is also a lowland taxon, but grows on more mineral and basic substrates (pH 7–9), usually rich in Ca2+. The endemic B. alpestris grows in the most distinct habitats, on substrates with low pH and with very low Ca2+ concentrations, at much higher altitudes than the other taxa and in very specific plant communities that have almost no affinities with those of the two lowland Baldellia-taxa. The Baldellia-taxa are threatened by eutrophication of their habitats. Moreover, many of the extant populations, in particular those of B. ranunculoides s. str., are very small and will be threatened by environmental stochasticity. Reintroduction and the creation of new populations might reduce the risk of extinction. Information given on the detailed habitat preferences of the Baldellia-taxa could help conservation efforts for these endangered taxa and identify suitable sites for (re-) introductions.  相似文献

Taking into account the interplay between spatial ecological dynamics and selection is a major challenge in evolutionary ecology. Although inclusive fitness theory has proven to be a very useful tool to unravel the interactions between spatial genetic structuring and selection, applications of the theory usually rely on simplifying demographic assumptions. In this paper, I attempt to bridge the gap between spatial demographic models and kin selection models by providing a method to compute approximations for relatedness coefficients in a spatial model with empty sites. Using spatial moment equations, I provide an approximation of nearest-neighbour relatedness on random regular networks, and show that this approximation performs much better than the ordinary pair approximation. I discuss the connection between the relatedness coefficients I define and those used in population genetics, and sketch some potential extensions of the theory.  相似文献

We describe diurnal habitat used by red deer (Cervus elaphus L.) in two representative forests of Haute Ardenne. We captured 17 calves and 13 adults and fitted them with VHF transmitters (ear tags or collars). Each animal was radio-tracked at least once per week during the daylight hours and relocated by triangulation. To determine habitat use, we used compositional analysis. We defined use for each animal as the proportion of relocations in each vegetation association. Each relocation was weighed according to its accuracy (i.e., based on the confidence ellipse computation). We defined availability as the proportion in the area of each vegetation association within its home range (i.e., minimum convex polygon). Red deer calves preferred edges in open areas (e.g., clear-cuts) during their first 3 months of life. Adults used open coniferous [e.g., natural regeneration of spruce (Picea abies)] stands and edges between coniferous stands and other vegetation associations. Closed coniferous stands were preferred during winter and deer usually used the edges of habitat patches rather than the core areas, except in winter for coniferous stands. The deciduous stands [e.g., old growth stands of beech (Fagus sylvatica)] were usually avoided, except in winter when the edges of deciduous stands were used. The availability of coniferous stands and edges partly determined the size of the diurnal home ranges.  相似文献

This paper describes the development of Taiwan's localized ecological engineering methods to make the mitigation works more effective. To strengthen the soil and water conservation and protection of the ecological environment, comprehensive mitigation planning is necessary with considerations that include balancing the safety, ecology, and landscape, and treating the whole watershed as a unit. To demonstrate the achievement of the promotion of the ecological engineering methods in Taiwan, this paper illustrates two complete mitigation examples for a debris flow torrent and a stream. Most of the mitigation works have survived and are still stable (with some minor damages) after the two strong typhoons of 2004. We show that the developed ecological engineering methods are very suitable in mitigation and worthwhile for further promotion for Taiwan's ecological environment.  相似文献

Habitat preferences of lesser rheas in Argentine Patagonia   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
This work reports the first results of a 3-year study (1998–2001) on habitat use and preferences by wild lesser rheas (Rhea pennata pennata) in the ecotone Monte–Patagonian steppe of Argentina. Ponds and four different habitat alternatives for lesser rheas were determined using satellite images and different structural vegetation characteristics: steppe, shrubland, shrub steppe, and mallines. Lesser rheas (adults, juveniles and chicks) used all habitats available to feed, although they showed preference for mallines, open areas that offer good visibility and abundant food resource. Rheas used shrub steppe and steppe for nesting, but they did not show preference for either habitat type. Nest site had a higher percentage of vegetation cover than control sites. Lesser rheas apparently preferred concealed sites for nesting since they offer protection from severe climate conditions and from predators. Our results suggest that habitat preference by lesser rheas counterbalances profitability of feeding to the corresponding cost of predation.  相似文献

Parrotfish are important members of coral reef communities because they consume macroalgae that would otherwise outcompete reef-building corals for space. However, some Caribbean parrotfish species also feed directly on live corals, and thus have the potential to negatively impact coral fitness and survival. This study investigates selective grazing by parrotfish on particular coral species, differences in grazing incidence among reef habitats and intraspecific discrimination among colonies of several coral species. We also investigate spatial and temporal patterns of parrotfish species abundance across habitats on the Belize barrier reef, and examine correlations between parrotfish abundance and grazing intensity across reef habitats. We found that members of the Montastraea annularis species complex, major builders of Caribbean reefs, were preferred targets of parrotfish grazing across all reef habitats, while M. cavernosa, Agaricia agaricites, Diploria strigosa, Porites astreoides and Porites porites were not preferred; Siderastrea siderea was preferentially grazed only in the spur and groove habitats. Parrotfish grazing preferences varied across habitats; M. annularis was grazed most often in shallow habitats, whereas M. franksi was consumed more at depth. Although it was not possible to directly observe parrotfish grazing on corals, we did find a positive correlation between Sparisoma aurofrenatum abundance and M. franksi grazing incidence across habitats. Finally, when we compared our results to parrotfish abundances measured by a previous study, we found that Sparisoma viride and Sp. aurofrenatum, two species known to be corallivorous, had increased abundances between 1982 and 2004. In light of escalating threats on Caribbean reef corals, it would be important for future studies to evaluate the impact of parrotfish corallivory on coral survival.  相似文献

In the hymenopteran parasitoid Venturia canescens, asexual (obligate thelytoky not induced by Wolbachia bacteria) and sexual (arrhenotokous) wasps coexist in field conditions despite the demographic cost incurred due to the production of males by sexual females. Arrhenotoky predominates in field conditions, whereas populations in indoor conditions (mills, granaries) are exclusively thelytokous. These differences in the relative abundance of the two modes of reproduction between environments suggest that the individuals of each reproductive mode may have developed strategies adapted to the conditions prevailing in each kind of habitat. The two environments contrast in temperature variability and in the spatial heterogeneity of host availability. In this study, we considered the combined effect of temperature and host availability on host patch exploitation by thelytokous and arrhenotokous V. canescens. As expected, arrhenotokous females were more sensitive to temperature changes. If the temperature decreased before foraging, they remained longer and exploited patches more thoroughly. This is consistent with the expected behaviour of parasitoids in response to signs of unfavourable conditions that entail increasing risk of time limitation or a reduced probability of attaining further patches. Both arrhenotokous and thelytokous females increased patch exploitation with host availability. However, unexpectedly, we found no difference in the way the two types of wasp responded to differences in host availability. Differences in the strategies adopted under different environmental conditions may indicate divergence of niche-specific life history traits between the two modes of reproduction. Niche displacement may partly account for the coexistence of these two modes of reproduction at a geographical scale.  相似文献
