We built a passive compartmental model of a cortical spiny stellate cell from the barrel cortex of the mouse that had been reconstructed in its entirety from electron microscopic analysis of serial thin sections (White and Rock, 1980). Morphological data included dimensions of soma and all five dendrites, neck lengths and head diameters of all 380 spines (a uniform neck diameter of 0.1 m was assumed), locations of all symmetrical and asymmetrical (axo-spinous) synapses, and locations of all 43 thalamocortical (TC) synapses (as identified from the consequences of a prior thalamic lesion). In the model, unitary excitatory synaptic inputs had a peak conductance change of 0.5 nS at 0.2 msec; conclusions were robust over a wide range of assumed passive-membrane parameters. When recorded at the soma, all unitary EPSPs, which were initiated at the spine heads, were relatively iso-efficient; each produced about 1 mV somatic depolarization regardless of spine location or geometry. However, in the spine heads there was a twentyfold variation in EPSP amplitudes, largely reflecting the variation in spine neck lengths. Synchronous activation of the TC synapses produced a somatic depolarization probably sufficient to fire the neuron; doubling or halving the TC spine neck diameters had only minimal effect on the amplitude of the composite TC-EPSP. As have others, we also conclude that from a somato-centric viewpoint, changes in spine geometry would have relatively little direct influence on amplitudes of EPSPs recorded at the soma, especially for a distributed, synchronously activated input such as the TC pathway. However, consideration of the detailed morphology of an entire neuron indicates that, from a dendro-centric point of view, changes in spine dimension can have a very significant electrical impact on local processing near the sites of input.  相似文献

Short-term variations in the relative catch in each of two or three interacting pheromone traps for the pea moth,Cydia nigricana (F.), were investigated for traps aligned along the wind. The proportional catch in each trap varied widely, although the mean values accorded with previous estimates. Over consecutive short intervals during a single trapping period the proportion caught in the centre trap of a three-trap line was constant. The proportion caught in the upwind trap of two-and three-trap lines showed trends in time. These trends differed between trapping periods, but two lines of traps operated simultaneously gave similar results to each other. It is suggested that these results, which are predicted by a model based on various components of moth orientation behaviour, are caused by changes in systematic behavioural processes, not random effects. Possible mechanisms are discussed.

Ces données ont été introduites dans un modèle de simulation quantitative qui prédisait que quand les captures totales sur une ligne ont été regroupées sur une période globale de piégage, la proportion capturée dans chaque piège devrait aussi avoir des valeurs moyennes semblables, mais varie plus largement que précédemment indiqué. Les simulations concernant des intervalles consécutifs beaucoup plus courts pendant la même période de piégage ont suggéré une forme spécifique de cette variation.Cette note signale des variations à court terme dans la proportion capturée au piège qui confirment ces prédictions. Nous montrons que sur des intervalles consécutifs brefs pendant une simple période de piégage, la proportion capturée dans le piège central d'une ligne de 3 pièges est contstante, bien que sa valeur change suivant les périodes de piégage. La proportion capturée dans le piège face au vent de 2 ou 3 lignes de pièges suit cette tendance dans le temps, ce qui est généralement bien représenté avec des courbes simples. Ces tendances changent suivant les périodes de piégage, mais des lignes de pièges fonctionnant simultanément fournissaient des résultats similaires. On suggère que ces résultats sont dus à des changements dans des processus comportementaux systématiques et non à des effects aléatoires. Les mécanismes possibles sont discutés.

A reaction-diffusion model is presented in which spatial structure is maintained by means of a diffusive mechanism more general than classical Fickian diffusion. This generalized diffusion takes into account the diffusive gradient (or gradient energy) necessary to maintain a pattern even in a single diffusing species. The approach is based on a Landau-Ginzburg free energy model. A problem involving simple logistic kinetics is fully analyzed, and a nonlinear stability analysis based on a multi-scale perturbation method shows bifurcation to non-uniform states.Part of this work was done while at the Mathematical Institute, Oxford University as a Senior Visiting Fellow supported by the Science Research Council of Great Britain under grant GR/B31378  相似文献

When two or more epidemic agents are simultaneously present in a population, they may interact to increase or decrease each other's effectiveness. One form of interaction is competition where each agent confers immunity to the others. Such competition occurs, for example, between different strains of myxomatosis in rabbit populations. We consider some consequences of introducing competition into mathematical epidemic models. Both deterministic and stochastic simple epidemic models are examined. Bacillus polymyxa ferments glucose to 1-2,3 butanediol, acetoin, ethanol, acetic acid, lactic acid, and formic acid. This research investigates product formation as a function of oxygen availability. A predictive model that simulates product distribution at known oxygen transfer rates is developed on the hypothesis that, in an energy-limited environment, B. polymyxa utilizes glucose and oxygen in the most efficient manner. The efficiency of utilization of glucose and oxygen is measured in terms of the ATP yields of each oxidative pathway. The identity of the products constituting the profile at the given oxygen transfer rate is determined by comparing the ATP production and consumption rates. While the ATP generated is calculated from a knowledge of the oxygen transfer rate and ATP yields of the oxidative pathways, the ATP consumption is estimated by the Pirt expression in terms of growth- and nongrowth-associated components. The product formation rates are obtained by solving ATP and NAD balance equations. They equate the production and consumption rates of these intermediates and are derived from the pseudo-steady-state hypothesis. The model is applied to continuous culture systems that are both open and closed with respect to biomass. At a given oxygen transfer rate, dilution rate, and inlet glucose concentration, the model predicts steady-state concentrations of two dominant fermentation endproducts with the help of four parameters that can be determined from independent experiments. In contrast with earlier approaches, the experimental studies are carried out in continuous culture. Product profiles are obtained at various oxygen transfer rates, fer rates, inlet glucose concentrations, and dilution rates. The effect of pH on the relative distribution of products is also demonstrated. Effect of hydrogen sulfide on growth of sulfate reducing bacteria   总被引:20,自引:0,他引:20  
A culture of sulfate reducing bacteria (SRB) growing on lactate and sulfate was incubated at different pH values in the range of 5.8-7.0. The effect of pH on growth rate was determined in this pH range; the highest growth rate was observed at pH 6.7. Hydrogen sulfide produced from sulfate reduction was found to have a direct and reversible toxicity effect on the SRB. A hydrogen sulfide Concentration of 547 mg/L (16.1 mM) completely inhibited the culture growth. Comparison between acetic acid and hydrogen sulfide inhibition is presented and the concomitant inhibition kinetics are mathematically described. (c) 1992 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献
