The empirical question of thresholds and mechanisms of mate choice   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Summary Theoretical discussions concerning how animals might best sample and select mates have suggested that individuals could base decisions either on a sample of mates (sampled-based decisions) or on a threshold of comparison (threshold-based decisions). Recent theoretical work demonstrates that threshold-based mating decisions generate higher expected fitness than sample-based mating decisions when search costs exist. Empirical results from most unmanipulated systems, however, either conclude that females make sample-based decisions or are inconclusive. A few experimental studies designed to detect mating thresholds purport to demonstrate threshold-based choice but an examination of these studies indicates such conclusions were premature. We believe that few examples of threshold-based choice exist because protocols designed to identify mating thresholds were often inconsistent with models of threshold choice. We suggest that future empirical work strive not to document mating thresholdsper se. Rather, future work might best reveal decision rules by manipulating the distribution of quality among potential mates; such manipulations predict uniquely how females using sample-based and threshold-based decision rules should behave.  相似文献

After being placed equidistant from playbacks of two computer-generated male calls, females of the katydidAmblycorypha parvipennis preferentially moved toward call phrases that were louder, longer, and leading (initiated without being overlapped by other call phrase endings). Because earlier tests with calling males had indicated that male mating success was related to these call parameters, we suggest that mating success is partly a result of female choice. Females also preferentially responded to the initial, rather than the latter, half of male phrases. Results of other tests suggested that females were responding to increased phonatome rate characteristic of the first half of the phrase. Males may compete to lead in order to prevent jamming of initial phrase information. Females also preferentially phonoresponded (ticked) in response to longer phrases. In earlier studies of male mating success and female phonotaxis using live males, male weight, sound level, and leading were intercorrelated; however, none of these parameters were correlated with phrase length. We suggest that females may respond to different call parameters under different environmental conditions.  相似文献

In order to understand variability in recruitment to populations of benthic and demersal marine species, it is critical to distinguish between the contributions due to variations in larval settlement versus those caused by post-settlement mortality. In this study, fine-scale (1–2 days) temporal changes in recruit abundance were followed through an entire settlement season in a temperate demersal fish in order to determine 1) how dynamic the process of recruitment is on a daily scale, 2) whether settlement and post-settlement mortality are influenced by habitat structure and conspecific density, and 3) how the relationship between settlement and recruitment changes over time. Settlement is considered to be the arrival of new individuals from the pelagic habitat, and recruitment is defined as the number of individuals surviving arbitrary periods of time after settlement. Replicate standardized habitat units were placed in 2 spatial configurations (clumped and randomly dispersed) and monitored visually for cunner (Tautogolabrus adspersus) settlement and recruitment every 1–2 days throughout the settlement season. The process of recruitment in T. adspersus was highly variable at a fine temporal scale. Changes in the numbers of recruits present on habitat units were due to both settlement of new individuals and mortality of animals previously recruited. The relative importance of these two processes appeared to change from day to day. The magnitude of the change in recruit number did not differ between the clumped and random habitats. However, post-settlement loss was significantly greater on randomly dispersed than clumped habitats. During several sampling dates, the extent of the change in recruit abundance was correlated with the density of resident conspecifics; however, on other dates no such relationship appeared to exist. Despite the presence of significant relationships between the change in recruit number and density, there was no evidence of either density-dependent mortality or settlement. Initially, there was a strong relationship between settlement and recruitment; however, this relationship weakened over time. Within 2 months after the cessation of settlement, post-settlement loss was greater than 99%, and no correlation remained between recruitment and the initial pattern of settlement. The results of this study demonstrate that the spatial arrangement of the habitat affects the rate and intensity of post-settlement loss. Counter to much current thinking, this study suggests that in order to understand the population ecology of reef fishes, knowledge of what habitats new recruits use and how mortality varies with structural aspects of the habitats is essential.  相似文献

The breeding system of the extremely diverse species Persoonia mollis (Proteaceae) was characterized to, firstly, assess its importance as a mechanism promoting diversity and, secondly, to investigate the mode of control over selective fruit abortion. Fruit quantity and quality was assessed following self-and outcross-pollination manipulations. Twenty percent of outcrossed flowers set fruit, compared to only 1% of flowers fertilized with self-pollen. Fruits produced by self-fertilization were 72% of the weight of cross-fertilized fruits. Fruits produced by self-fertilization were significantly fewer in number and lighter than fruits following natural pollination of unmanipulated flowers (17% fruit set), but outcrossed and naturally pollinated fruits were equivalent. Flower to fruit demography suggested that a post-zygotic mechanism may be preferentially selecting the most vigorous zygote genotypes, as ovary abscission occurs mostly between 4 and 30 weeks after pollination, regardless of pollen source. Self-pollen tube growth was found to be inhibited within the styly, while pollen tubes were found in the ovary for 50% of all outcrossed flowers. These data suggest that a pre-zygotic pseudo self-incompatibility mechanism is the cause of low fruit set following self-pollination. If more females than males are available for mating in the breedingpopulation (i.e., the operational sex ratio, OSR, is femalebiased), males can afford to be choosy. In the pipefish (Syngnathustyphle) females compete for males, who are choosy. In natureOSRs are typically female biased, but may occasionally be malebiased. In a series of experiments, males were allowed to choosebetween a large and a small female under a perceived excessof either males or females. Under female bias, males preferredthe large female: they spent more time close to her than tothe small female; they courted the large female sooner thanthe small; and they tended to copulate sooner and more oftenwith the large female. Under male bias all these differencesvanished and males mated at random with respect to female size.Males reproduced at a faster rate under male than under femalebias because they received more eggs in their brood pouches.Thus, males switched from maximizing mate quality (i.e., beingchoosy) to minimizing the risk of not reproducing (i.e., beingquick) as the OSR became male biased.  相似文献

Mating activity was observed during four breeding seasons in two groups of black and white ruffed lemurs (Varecia variegata variegata) living in lowland rain forest on Nosy Mangabe island, Madagascar. The onset of the May-July breeding season was signalled by behavioral changes in adult males. Males made forays outside their usual home ranges, were more aggressive to other males, and performed appetitive and other sex-specific behaviors more frequently. Females showed receptive and proceptive behaviors during a 1-2 day behavioral estrus. Ruffed lemurs mated monogamously, polyandrously, and polygynously. These observations do not support previous assertions that they live only in monogamous families. There is growing evidence that the female reproductive fluid (FRF) plays an important role in cryptic female choice through its differential effect on the performance of sperm from different males. In a natural spawning event, the male(s) may release ejaculate closer or further away from the spawning female. If the relative spatial proximity of competing males reflects the female pre-mating preference towards those males, then favoured males will encounter higher concentrations of FRF than unpreferred males. Despite this being a common situation in many external fertilizers, whether different concentrations of FRF can differentially influence the sperm performance of distinct male phenotypes (favoured and unfavoured by the female) remains to be elucidated. Here, we tested this hypothesis using the grass goby (Zosterisessor ophiocephalus), a fish with distinct territorial-sneaker reproductive tactics and female pre-mating preference towards territorial males, that consequently mate in an advantaged position and whose sperm experience higher concentrations of FRF. Our findings revealed a differential concentration-dependent effect of FRF over sneaker and territorial sperm motility only at low concentrations (i.e. at the distance where sneakers typically ejaculate), with increasing FRF concentrations (i.e. close to the eggs) similarly boosting the sperm performance of both sneaker and territorial males. The ability to release sperm close to the eggs is a prerogative of territorials, but FRF can likewise advantage the sperm of those sneakers that are able to get closer, allowing flexibility in the direction of female post-mating choice.  相似文献

We used a breeding design involving 18 sires and 108 dams tostudy the heritabilities of male ornaments in red jungle fowl(Gallus gallus). Ornaments used by females to choose mates showedlow heritabilities, with the exception of comb and wattle measures.The general absence of heritability suggests that a geneticcovariance did not exist at the time of this study between mostmale ornaments and female preferences for those ornaments. Thisresult is contrary to a key prediction of the arbitrary or Fisherianhypothesis of sexual selection. Comb size and color are condition-dependenttraits that reflect short-term changes in health, and comb sizeof males was positively correlated with offspring weight. Ourresults are consistent with the expectation of good-genes hypothesesthat male ornaments reflect the ability of males to withstandenvironmental stresses.  相似文献

近50年青藏高原的气候变化速率是全球平均值的2倍,对高原有蹄类的种群分布和多样性维持带来严重影响。本研究以西藏类乌齐马鹿国家级自然保护区的马鹿种群为例,通过2013年和2021年对马鹿和牦牛种群数量、分布的调查,并整合了物种分布模型和种群动态模型,评估了当前和未来气候变化及人类活动(放牧、道路、居民点等)对马鹿种群适应性分布的影响。研究表明,马鹿种群在2013—2021年由890头增加到1 400头,根据种群增长模型预计在2050年马鹿种群数量将达到1 735头,但其适宜栖息地在2050年代下降43.4%,2070年代下降5.1%,表明马鹿种群增长与适宜栖息地缩小之间的冲突将不利于马鹿种群的可持续发展。同时,当前马鹿与牦牛栖息地重合率为19%,2050年代为60%,2070年代为37%,且牦牛与马鹿存在食物竞争,这在一定程度上减少了马鹿原有的适宜栖息地。为保护马鹿,建议减少牦牛的饲养量1 000~1 500头。本研究将种群增长模型、种间竞争关系与物种分布模型整合,把气候变化对物种的影响延伸到种群层面,对其他物种的保护具有借鉴意义。  相似文献

An experiment was designed to study how gut fullness and encounter with 5-mm Asellus aquaticus influenced acceptance or rejection of less profitable 8-mm Asellus . 45-mm sticklebacks were found to always accept 5-mm prey whereas 8-mm prey were accepted with an initial probability of about 0.9. This probability decreased as the gut filled. Fish of differing sizes and sex had similar daily energy intakes per unit body size, however the acceptance of 8-mm prey was related to fish size. Whenever a fish orientated to a prey it was followed by pursuit and manipulation independently of prey size. The decision to accept or reject prey occurred after one manipulation, a criterion that was more variable for the larger prey. For one feeding session per day the total energy intake was almost constant despite the changing combination of prey sizes eaten. The fish ate prey with long handling times if the energetic contents of the stomach had not reached 450 J. Calculations were made of how many of each millimetre prey size group would satisfy the 450 J demand and how long the estimated number would take to handle. This showed that the best option is to consume 5-mm prey if given the choice.  相似文献
