Andean cultural ecologists have made two claims in recent years: ecological decomposition is absent due to effective indigenous management of communal resources, and agricultural intensification is inversely related to altitude. Drawing on material from the Jukumani Indians of Northern Potosi, Bolivia, these assertions are challenged. First, there is little evidence to prove or disprove ecological degradation. Second, the location of agricultural intensification, as the Jukumani data suggests, is influenced by altitude as well as by the presence of market.Fieldwork in Bolivia was carried out between January 1979 and May 1981. This essay was originally presented at a conference entitled, How Communities Resolve Common Property Problems, sponsored by the Harvard Institute for International Development and the Center for Population Studies of Harvard University in the spring semester of 1983. 相似文献
Experiments with rainfall on a dune grassland near Oostvoorne, the Netherlands with Festuco-Galietum as the main syntaxon are described. Both increase in rain through additional watering and decrease in rain through catchment are presented to plots belonging to the xerosere and the mesosere. Clear changes in the floristic composition are the result, even after only two years. Typical Festuco-Galietum species are promoted by high rainfall, species of open habitat such as Corynephorus canescens are promoted by drought. The results are discussed against the background of long term permanent plot observations in the area and a relation with rabbit grazing intensity is supposed.Nomenclature of vascular plants follows Heukels-van Ooststroom (1975) Flora van Nederland 18 ed., Woiters-Noordhoff, Groningen; Nomenclature of syntaxa follows Westhoff & den Held (1969). Abstract. Four humid grassland communities at three different locations in Meghalaya, India were analysed during 1988 and 1989 for species and life-form composition, diversity and dominance in relation to altitude, soil and prevailing disturbances. Due to the adverse interactive influences of exceptionally high annual rainfall (> 10 000 mm), topography and human interference on soil fertility, the grassland at Cherrapunji, at 1300 m altitude, had a low species diversity (H'= 1.74) and was dominated by three perennial grass species. Similar grasslands, at both higher and lower altitudes on fertile soil and with lower rainfall (ca. 2000 mm), showed higher diversity values (H'= 2.28 at Burnihat and 2.31 at Upper Shillong). The proportion of perennial species and chamaephytes increased with elevation. At the high altitude site a grassland under short-term protection from fires and grazing had a higher species richness, density and basal cover than an unprotected grassland. All grasslands show a clear seasonality, albeit with different patterns, with a maximum in density and basal cover in August. The differences in structure and seasonality are discussed in terms of different levels of stress. 相似文献
The influence of sheep grazing of moderate grazing (MG), heavy grazing (HG), inordinate grazing (IG), over grazing (OG), and extinct grazing (EG) on vegetation succession was studied in the Stipa baicalensis steppe during 1984–1986.

The relationships between the relative sum of dominance ratio (RSDR) and the degree of succession (DS) at all stages of grazing succession in the Stipa baicalensis steppe were revealed in terms of the method of mathematical analysis under five grazing intensities mentioned above.

The dynamic models of grazing succession that are based on accurate grazing intensities in relation to succession courses were constructed using RSDR5, and DS. The models may explain the rules of grazing succession in the Stipa baicalensis steppe.
Abstract. Lower salt-marsh species occur more in the grazed than in the mown sites of a salt marsh in Schiermonnikoog in the Netherlands. This was demonstrated by a sowing experiment which determined which characteristic of the stand structure, height of the canopy or percentage of bare soil, is responsible for this difference. The total number of seedlings which emerged was negatively related to the height of the canopy and positively to the percentage of bare soil. The survival of seedlings of Suaeda maritima and Plantago maritima could be explained by the height of the canopy and for the latter species also by the percentage of bare soil. The survival of Aster tripolium and Plantago maritima was higher in grazed than in mown sites. Since the amount of bare soil was higher than seemed necessary for germination and survival, it was concluded that the taller canopy was responsible for the absence of lower salt-marsh species in the mown sites. 相似文献
One of the reasons suggested to explain the dominance of blue-greens in eutrophic lakes is that they are not used as food by zooplankton; and even when ingested, they are poorly utilized.
An increase in herbivores might be the expected result of biomanipulation of the aquatic food chain. This attempt at controlling the algae population is, however, destined to fail if zooplankton do not also utilize blue-greens as food. In this respect, a series of in-lake experimental results indicates that after the food chain has been biomanipulated, there is a decrease in blue-green density in periods when there is an increase in herbivores. Is this only an accidental result or are the two facts interrelated; in other words, can the decrease in the density of blue-greens be attributed to the increased use of them by zooplankton herbivores?
The suitability of blue-greens as food for zooplankton has been widely investigated by many authors with contrasting and inconclusive results. Two main factors seem to play important role in determining their suitability as food: the biochemical properties of the different species, or even different strains of the same species; and the shape and size of the colonies.
In particular, biochemical properties can result in toxic effects on zooplankton, while size and shape may strongly interfere with filtering, thus reducing the possibility of gathering food.
Annual net production was estimated in the secondary coppice forest near Tokyo, which was dominated by a deciduous oak,Quercus serrata Thunb. Lateral growth of stems and old branches was directly estimated by examining the annual rings for 35 shoots in a clear-cut
quadrat of 10m×10m. Phytomasses of current organs were also weighed in the quadrat. Preharvest losses of current organs were
determined by twelve 0.5 m2 litter traps for fine litter and twelve 6 m2 quadrats for woody litter. Branch production was also assessed indirectly by use of the stem-branch allometry and death of
branches. The results of the indirect method were in sufficient agreement with the result of the direct one. Grazing loss
of leaves from the canopy was estimated directly from the loss in leaf area and indirectly from the animal faeces caught by
the litter traps.
Net production of the canopy trees was 149 kg a−1 year−1, in which leaf production was 36.9 kg. Animals grazed about 14% of the leaf area by the end of the growing season. True consumption
of leaves by animals was 7.6% of leaf production or 10% of leaf mass. Production of undergrowth, mainly a dwarf bamboo,Pleioblastus chino Makino, was 28 kg a−1 year−1, being 15% of the total stand production.
Productivity of this forest was significantly higher than that of cool-temperate deciduous broadleaf forests. 相似文献
Commencing in December 1970, paddocks of a uniform series of sheep pastures were grazed for 6, 12 or 24 weeks by either yearling steers is or yearling ewes. Cattle pastures were treated similarly. All ewes and steers were pre-dosed with anthelmintic. At the conclusion of alternate grazing the effectiveness of the grazing treatments was evaluated by grazing each paddock for 1 month with either ten worm-free lambs (sheep pastures) or three wormfree calves (cattle pastures). The test animals were then slaughtered for total worm counts. The grazing of sheep pastures with cattle for 6, 12 or 24 weeks from December onwards resulted in reductions in numbers of Haemonchus contortus and Trichostrongylus colubriformis in test lambs. In comparison with continuous grazing by sheep, Nematodirus spp was only reduced after 24 weeks grazing by cattle. Cattle pastures grazed by sheep for 6 weeks showed no reduction in numbers of Ostertagia ostertagi or Cooperia oncophora in test calves. However after 12 weeks with sheep, numbers of O. ostertagi though not C. oncophora were reduced and after 24 weeks of alternate grazing both these species were reduced.Calves following the 6 week sheep treatments acquired both Haemonchus contortus and Trichostrongylus colubriformis and the calves from the 12 week sheep treatment paddock also carried H. contortus. For sheep the only evidence of cross-transmission was the occurrence of small numbers of Cooperia oncophora in test lambs from the 24 week cattle grazing treatment. The results provide evidence that sequential stocking with cattle and sheep in conjunction with anthelmintic treatment is an effective management strategy for preparing parasitologically safer pastures, but further information is required to determine the optimum timing of sequential stocking in farming situations. 相似文献
Wood-pastures are fragile ecosystems because they were formed by, and depend on specific, low-intensity multifunctional management. Although their ecological and cultural significance is high, wood-pastures are rapidly deteriorating all over Europe, mainly due to changing land use. We still lack a basic understanding of the ecological value of wood-pastures, and in which features they differ from other landscape elements. In this paper we investigated the ecological value of wood-pastures for passerine birds by (i) comparing bird assemblages of wood-pastures with those of closed forests and open pastures and (ii) exploring the relationships between variables describing wood-pastures and species traits of the bird assemblages. Our study region (Southern Transylvania, Romania) provides a unique opportunity to understand the importance of a traditional cultural and ecological environment for many different organisms. Wood-pastures had a higher overall number of bird species, and a higher spatial turnover in bird community composition than closed forests and open pastures. We found significant associations between bird species traits and habitat structural elements in wood-pastures such as large trees, oak- and pear trees and shrubs. Our findings suggest that traditional wood-pastures in Southern Transylvania have distinct and rich passerine bird communities. This richness is inextricably linked to the multifunctional, low-intensity land use traditionally applied in the wood-pastures that promotes high niche diversity. For effective conservation of the biodiversity of wood-pastures, a detailed understanding is needed of how different management regimes may influence the key structural elements of wood-pastures relevant for biodiversity and these should be protected. 相似文献
