Impacts of naturally-occurring soil fungi on seeds of meadow plants   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
Although soil fungi may represent an ecologically important cause of mortality of buried seeds, few studies have provided direct evidence of the pathogenicity of fungi colonizing seeds in natural habitats. In response, we conducted a series of experiments to investigate the impacts of soil fungi from a range of habitats on seeds of meadow plants. We compared the survival of seeds of four grasses in five habitats, and isolated fungi from these seeds. We then tested the pathogenicity of selected isolates against two standard sets of plant species: the original four grasses and a broad range of old field species. We found that the soil community contained a large variety of seed-colonizing fungi. Some, but not all, examples of these fungi caused seed mortality; others may be harmless commensals. Some of these isolates negatively affected a broad range of plant species, but others had a more restricted host range; as a result, pathogenicity varied depending upon the particular plant-fungus combination. Few between-habitat differences in seed survival were detected. Our results demonstrate that fungal seed pathogens are common, ubiquitous, and potentially lethal, but that their effects depend on the particular combination of fungus and plant species considered. The purpose of this study was to determine the diversity and prevalence of Fusarium species in a survey of cereal and grassland systems from the South Island of New Zealand by applying morphological and molecular techniques. Isolates were collected from soil, roots, and stems from 21 cereal and grassland sites. Ten Fusarium species were identified using morphological characters, including F. acuminatum, F. avenaceum, F. crookwellense, F. culmorum, F. equiseti, F. oxysporum, F. poae, F. pseudograminearum, F. sambucinum, and F. tricinctum. In general, their distribution was found to be unrelated to biogeographical location, although agricultural practice increased the overall diversity of Fusarium. Phylogenetic analyses were successfully used to identify morphologically similar isolates belonging to the F. avenaceum/F. acuminatum/F. tricinctum species complex and to resolve previously undetermined relationships amongst these species. Fifty-eight isolates classified as either F. avenaceum, F. acuminatum, or other closely related species as well as several well-characterised isolates from international culture collections were examined using DNA sequence data for β-tubulin (βTUB), translation elongation factor 1α (EF1α), and mitochondrial small subunit ribosomal RNA (mtSSU). Analyses of DNA sequence data from both βTUB and EF1α discriminated among isolates of F. avenaceum, F. acuminatum, and F. tricinctum and determined that these three distinct sequence groups formed a single clade. By contrast, mtSSU was unable to differentiate F. avenaceum from F. acuminatum and other closely related species believed to be F. tricinctum. Comparison of the EF1α sequences with the international FUSARIUM-ID database supported the identification of isolates in this study. As in other studies, F. avenaceum was found to be widespread in agricultural and native ecosystems. However, F. acuminatum in New Zealand was found only on non-wheat hosts. The reason for the absence of this wheat pathogen in cereal-based ecosystems in New Zealand remains unknown.  相似文献

Summary Lithium toxicity in seedling of crested wheatgrass (Agropyron desertorum), Sherman bluegrass (Poa ampla), and Whitmar wheatgrass (Agropyron inerme) was investigated in 2 potted soil studies. Yields of roots and shoots were unaffected at 2.5 and 5 ppm but were significantly (P<0.05) depressed at 15 and 60 ppm. Li was much higher in the herbage than in the roots of grasses grown in Li treated soils. Species tolerancy to Li appeared to be: crested wheatgrass > Sherman bluegrass > Whitmar wheatgrass.The research is a cooperative investigation of the USDA, Science and Education Administration, Agricultural Research, and the Oregon State Agric. Small mammals can influence grassland assembly by selecting against palatable plants – the community can become dominated by the plants they avoid. This predation-based selection could have indirect effects on community biomass and tissue quality, especially given how untasty plants may have higher concentrations of recalcitrant carbon compounds including lignin. We tested small mammal effects on biomass and tissue quality of roots and shoots in a two-year-old 18 ha restored tallgrass prairie with established zones of high and low plant predation. We focused on the three dominant herbaceous functional groups of tallgrass prairie (perennial forbs, C3 and C4 grasses), and targeted the early stages of assembly given that plant predation by small animals can unfold quickly and is difficult to subsequently quantify. We predicted rodent predation to create communities with reduced biomass but an increased abundance of lignin-rich plants; we only observed the former. Rodents reduced aboveground biomass by 46% but preferentially targeted lignin-rich plants, with the latter result explained by the predominance of granivory over herbivory – there was no opportunity for selection based on tissue palatability. Based strictly on aboveground biomass, we estimated small mammals reduced standing stocks of recalcitrant carbon by 65 kg ha−1, with reductions in belowground stocks almost certainly higher given that root:shoot ratios averaged 21:1. Given that the quantity and quality of plant production can affect ecosystem functions including decomposition and the regulation of soil carbon stocks, our work suggests that non-random plant predation may substantially affect rates of soil carbon accumulation in the early stages of grassland development.  相似文献

The factors affecting in vitro dry matter digestibility (IVDMD) of fully mature internodes of 150 lines of the forage grass, Phalaris aquatica, and internodes of 100 lines of perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne), harvested just after anthesis, were investigated. The relationships between IVDMD and the contents of acetyl bromide lignin, and ester-ether linkages between lignin and wall polysaccharides, measured by hydroxycinnamic acids (HCAs) released by 4 M NaOH at 170 degrees C respectively, were determined. The regression analysis gave r(2)=0.05 and 0.03 for the relation between IVDMD and lignin content and r(2)=0.51 and 0.53 for the relation between IVDMD and the content of hot alkali-labile HCA (predominantly ferulic acid) for phalaris and ryegrass, respectively. These observations are interpreted in terms of the restricted accessibility of polysaccharide hydrolysing enzymes to their substrates in the forage cell walls by the covalent cross-linking of wall polymers through HCAs.  相似文献

Summary The role of fimbriae in enterobacterial adhesion to roots of grasses and cereals is discussed. All nitrogen-fixing enteric bacteria isolated in Finland had fimbriae. AllEnterobacter isolates had mannose-binding type-1 fimbriae, whereas most of theKlebsiella isolates had both type-1 and type-3 fimbriae. The strains were isolated from a total of ten different grass species, and no specific association was found between grass species and bacterial fimbriation, biogroup or serogroup. Purified, radiolabeled fimbriae bound to roots ofPoa pratensis in vitro, and bacterial adhesion was inhibited by Fab fragments specific for fimbriae.Klebsiella strains carrying type-3 fimbriae adhered to roots of various grasses and cereals more efficiently than type-1- or nonfimbriated strains, and it was concluded that type-3 fimbriae are the major adhesions ofKlebsiella. Immunofluorescence studies revealed that the bacteria preferentially adhered to root hairs, and to a lesser extent, to the zone of elongation and the root cap mucilage. No strict host specificity in enterobacterial adhesion was observed.  相似文献

本文以禾本科植物幼苗基本特征和基本类型为基础对禾本科植物各类群的进化关系进行了探讨。原始禾本科植物幼苗第一叶宽短.中胚轴仲长,不具中胚轴根,不具质片及胚根鞘节根,县少数或不具胚芽鞘节根。现代禾本科植物各亚科不同的幼苗类型是在原始幼苗的基础上直接或间接进化来的。各亚科及内部各种幼苗类型的进化顺序及地域分布反映了各类禾本科植物从其原发地向各自分布地扩散、迁移和进化适应的过程。  相似文献

DNA content was estimated by flow cytometry in seventeen taxa from the Dilatata, Quadrifaria and Paniculata groups of Paspalum and five synthetic hybrids. Results were compared to known genome constitutions and phylogenetic relationships. DNA 2C-values ranged from 1.24 pg in diploid P. juergensii to 3.79 pg in a hexaploid biotype of P. dilatatum. The I genome of three Quadrifaria diploids is 1.2 to 1.5-fold larger than the J genome of P. juergensii (Paniculata). The 2C-values of the IIJJ tetraploids of the Dilatata group are lower than expected based on putative genome donors. Reduction of genome sizes could have occurred after the formation of the allopolyploids of the Dilatata group. The DNA content of all synthetic hybrids is in accordance with the sum of parental C-values. The interactions driving genome downsizing may operate differently during the transition from diploidy to polyploidy than on subsequent increases in ploidy level.  相似文献

试验在1998年7月~1999年9月年进行。主要采用盖度目测估计法,观测结果表明,此地区适应性较好的草种主要为热性禾草。云南狼尾草、非洲狗尾草和东非狼尾草的覆盖效果好,普通狗牙根和弯叶画眉也较好。云南知风草和非洲狗尾草盖度一直较高而颜色较差。孔颖草和百喜草后期生长势较强、覆盖好。温带禾草中较耐热的高羊茅表现较好。细弱剪股颖和鸭茅耐旱耐热耐贫瘠性较差,次年衰退很快。多年生黑麦草第一年表现好。温带豆科牧草冬春期表现较好。紫花苜蓿较抗旱、耐贫瘠,覆盖好。红三叶的适应性也较好。苗期生长缓慢的草地早熟禾、细叶结缕草和不适应紫色土的碱茅及不适应干旱高燥生境的地毯草在初期覆盖速度很慢,覆盖度始终很小。百喜草和百脉根可选择利用。  相似文献
